  • Had my eyes peeled for a decent deal on the 1TB OLED and this is the best I've seen in a minute.
Is it relatively safe to go through ebay for a big transaction like this?
Are there any glaring issues with return policies or claiming warranties?

    • +4

eBay is generally pretty good. If you have a legitimate issue its easy to open a case and get it sorted.

Seller has lots of feedback and at 98% although this is a little low compared to the top sellers. Best to check their negative feedback to see what kinds of issues others have had.

      • +2

        Thanks for the reply!

Had a look through the feedback and no negative feedback regrading steam decks.

Think I'll have to cop this one :)

    • Why 1 Tb with itched screen over 512 with clear oled screen?

Some people complain that the 1tb version screen coating makes the screen colors a bit washed out compared to the 512 one.

      • Funny, when I used to say I liked glossy displays a decade ago people would call me an isheep. Have we done a 180 on glossy/matte screens?

      • Key word, "some". The etched glass is better than any matte screen protector you can get. It usually is better indoors reducing smaller amounts of light rather than a lot of light outdoors. And worse case if you dont like it or use it in bright areas a lot, just use a normal glass protector and it will just be clear again.

      • +1

Unless you're actively comparing a matte OLED right next to a glossy OLED you're really not going to notice the "washed out" colours IMO.

The amount of glare the matte screen cuts out makes it highly worth it IMO especially since it's a handheld which you can play in different locations and therefore different lighting conditions, although I've always preferred matte screens over glossy screens.

  • wow… and less TRS ? a steal or not? hmm still over $1k
i rather get the lcd 64gb refub/new and after TRS is under $500. possible?

    • I have a 64GB LCD I bought new at $650 early last year. It's a wicked device and I play it almost exclusively over my PC now, not sure would I would feel if I'd paid over $1000 for it though.

      • true for me probably for tinkering, emulator, and fun only as i got dizzy playing shooting type counterstrike games

      • +1

yeah i rather wait for ppl selling their lcd second hand for $400 probably mid this year

    • +1

Yeah at >$1000 this is waaay too much when you can get the lcd version for significantly less.

  • +1

For this money I would prefer an ASUS ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go (or MSI Claw when available).

    • How dare you Sir!!!!

    • +2

I went with Legion Go, got it for $1299 retail price but combined with 15% off Ultimate GC and some GC via credit card points, came down to just over $1k in the end. Beast of a device.

      • It's the Legion Go screen LCD or OLED?

        • +3

LCD unfortunately, and no HDR. Hopefully the next version will have both.

    • +7

its 2024 and OLED is a must I feel

    • -1

ROG ally, steam deck is too big.

      • The ROG Ally is a great form factor, they need to put a bigger screen on it though. I hqve both the ROG Ally and Legion Go but lean towards the Legion go for the screen size.

    • +5

No way would I go back to a LCD screen after trying OLED.

    • +7

Id rather support a company that has designed it around the software and hardware. I feel like asud and lenovo just slapped a windows os on a mini computer with a screen.

      • Thats fair enough, it is exactly that, a mini pc, with Windows, which has its advantages, and disadvantages. The steam deck hardware is getting a bit long in the tooth and could do with a refresh… it would also be nice if Valve actually released it in AU. I was super keen on the steam deck when it was first released, but feel as though they need to refresh it with more than just the OLED before I pick one up at this price. Once they release a true next gen refresh with updated APU I'll most likely pick one up.

  • +4

I grabbed mine via Dick Smith (Kogan) eBay for about $6 more with the same code.

  • +6

    Holding for a <$1000 price

    • -1

$550 US so no reason it shouldn't be around $900 max

      • +7

direct currency conversion + GST is $923, so I'd call $923 the minimum expected price, then add on whatever the grey-importing costs are.

      • +8

        Plenty of reasons.
        1. It's not sold here officially.
        2. $550usd doesn't include any taxes
        3. It'll cost you about $100AU to get it shipped here through parcel forwarding.
        4. Resellers want their cut.

  • +2

Only thing stopping me from upgrading is the lack of Windows drivers on this. Having dual boot on my LCD SteamDeck gives me the best of both worlds (SteamOS, Win 11 for Gamepass)

    • -1

How does well Gamepass on Windows run on the Steam Deck?

      • +4

Amazing, especially after installing SteamDeckTools which gives you controller support, ability to adjust TDP (and create per-game profiles) and bring some functionality closer to SteamOS.

Finished a tonne of Gamepass titles on there (Cocoon, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4, Sea of Stars, etc etc).

        • +1

Fantastic! I'm guessing you have to install it on the main harddrive and not a microSD? Or is either fine? I'll look into it this weekend, thanks :)

          • @theknight27: You can install it on the microSD but it will be a terrible experience. I partitioned the internal drive in half for SteamOS/Win11, both run really fast. Win 11 boots so quickly on it. Once you have the Windows side set up properly, hardly any messing around required (aside from the monthly OS updates which are automatic)

            • +1

@ozb88: Nice, I didn't know you can do that. Was leaning towards Legion until you made these comments.
Might reconsider Steam Deck after all

            • @ozb88: Can it runs ms office products like outlook, words, ppt, excel for work related tasks?

              • @spedohero: Under Windows 11, it's the same as any Windows computer, although using Word, Excel, etc will be difficult unless you connect it to a dock with an external monitor, mouse and keyboard.

    • Why did you end up dual booting?

Have you tried the non steam launcher to install game pass?

      https://github.com/moraroy/NonSteamLaunchers-On-Steam-Deck

      • +2

Xbox Game Pass is streaming only using that.

  • Got mine delivered in 2 days from Kogan, superb!

  • +2

Remember your warranty is entirely through whoever you buy, not through Valve. Thats why I paid premium through Amazon.
Yes Im justifying the price dropping.

    • -5

you spend $1.3k on a device that costs $550 US? LOL

      • +5

        It's $1175 on Amazon?

      • No?

    • Will Valve never respect the warranties on these in Australia? How does that work? Sounds like it might be something the ACCC would look into

      • +1

No, they won't, because Valve don't sell the product here so they don't have to follow Australian consumer law (probably the biggest reason they don't sell them here).

Resellers like Kogan, my-phonez and the others, do sell them here as a third party so they do have to follow Aus consumer law (including warranties). Simple as that. ACCC can't do anything to Valve.

      • +1

I don't think any company respect the warranties for grey import. All grey import warranty goes to the importer, which in this case is my-phonez on eBay.

I have also heard that you can send it back to Valve for repair but you have to pay for the shipping to them and shipping back to yourself as Valve does not have shipping logistics setup for Australia.

      • Yes they do I don't know why the fellas below you are saying they don't

It's in their terms of service that the warranty is for the owner of the device, not the original so even going as far as you buying a second hand one from USA you're still covered

They warrantied my LCD a year and a bit ago due to a dead gpu on arrival, I did have to pay to send it to them and pay to get it shipped back through a third party service, I went through planet express

    • Hey QQ - did you purchase through a reseller on Amazon AU? I can see Skyradar is a reseller there for the SD OLED. Any issues in your experience? Assume it’s the same box/package as what would come from Valve direct

      • +1

That's who I got it from. It came in the box that would have been shipped to you from Valve, yes. They just removed the shipping label so you can't see Skyradars address

        • +1

Brilliant. Thanks for getting back to me.

    • -2

No you still have the warranty through Valve no matter where you are and even if you bought it second hand

    • +4

Considering most reviewers still say the Steam Deck OLED currently beats the other offerings (Rog Ally / Legion Go), not sure why you're laughing it up lad.

Butt hurt that which ever one you bought lasts 30 mins without being plugged in?

      • Most reviews? Name some (cite sources). And ‘most’ reviews have s critical context as to why you might prefer a steam deck over Ally or Legion Go. Clearly you don’t handle subtext & context very well…

I have 2 steam decks, Ally & Go. Because I can. And I can afford it.

There’s time and place for all these devices. I run steam deck exclusively for less demanding games because games like banisher, Pacific drive, forever skies, grounded, kaku, my time sandrock, lords of fallen, nier automata, no man sky… runs like crap on steam deck.

I tweak my devices including custom partitions & ssds across all devices and familiar with wine and windows including tweaking.dll files for games on windows etc.

The steam deck is NOT objectively better than Ally or Go. When I travel I bring my Ally/Go over steam deck. The battery life on steam deck running new AAA/AA demanding games is about 1.5 hours max with shitty 30fps - 45fps most of time with heavy artefacts and low fidelity… I can get better performance @ 15-20w range on Z1E vs. RDNA 2 chipset.

The steam deck is good for indie/emulation. It’s got an overall okay value proposition if you’re not looking to leave steam store. But Ally & Go can do so much more without dual booting…

        • I mean there's a thing called google lad. I don't need to do your job for you.

Interesting comment about "because I can afford them". If we're "throwing down over money spent on tech" - my work laptop that I use solely for my job (and really only light gaming when I'm bored) is a Razer Blade 16 with a 4070. People ask me why do I have a gaming laptop just for work and I'm like - well I genuinely like working on a powerful machine… And my home desktop is a 4090 system (for when I actually have time to get some gaming in).

I had an LED Steam Deck but sold it because personally I couldn't stand the low frame rate for anything more demanding than indie titles as you've mentioned. I keep going back to look at buying a handheld device for when I'm flying but it seems that none really tick the box for me personally this gen. I'll probs wait to see what the 2nd gen of the next cycles look like and bite the bullet then.

If I was to buy a device for this gen, would probably be the OLED as mentioned because the reviews seem to indicate that for it's specific purpose (gaming on the go) it's the better option and the small upgrades over the first iteration make it the better option than the other options.

  • +1

Got a 512GB OLED that got brought in by a friend from Canada. This thing is awesome.

    • +1

Bought mine last week and absolutely love it - perfect blend of hardware, software and convenience

      • +1

Yeah I'm working through my pile of Indies games that I wouldn't sit down at my pc to play. Finished darkestville castle and now playing late shift.

  • -5

How is this a deal? This is extortionate

  • +2

This is such a good deal…

As I have said on other deal posts, I got mine from Taiwan for 18,800 TWD which is ~$905 AUD.

Paying ~$225 extra for a local with paypal protection is so good!

  • I've been keeping my eyes on this for the last 2 months. It's been getting cheaper every week. Bet it will go lower in the coming weeks

    • -1

"go lower in the coming weeks" based on?

      • +1

It's either not a lot of people are buying them or all the au sellers are undercutting each other every week on eBay at least. If you check the listing they're like $1 differences to each seller and it's just been getting lower from its original $1299 kogan price. Including the eBay discounts here and there which occasionally drops it to 1150-1200 last month. Look on eBay right now, it's like 1220-1230 without the 100$ discount as normal price

        • -2

          Thanks for the insight

  • can you add SD card as extra storage?

    • +3

Yup. It does have microSD slot

  • 512GB LCD with "Premium anti-glare etched glass"

    $764.11 with code TOPFEB6.

Yea, it's the LCD model but $362 is a lot of money games. Same storage, extremely similar performance, slightly heavier, moderately worse battery life, runs warmer, slightly louder fans, slower WIFI, 60hz vs 90hz and LCD…

  • -1

Wish Valve would start selling these through Steam here in Aus. Got a heap of old Counter Strike skins and cases I'd love to swap for one of these bad boys

  • Too expensive

  • Are there any concerns with burn-in on OLED screens these days?
