  • Are these rugged enough for high-school kids?

    • +10

1kg laptop. With a funky hinge design. Imma say no tbh

    • +9

Get this for kids instead: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/834727

      • These are basically Ideapads. I would recommend a thinkpad instead.

    • my kids both have MSI prestige laptops but from around 8th/9th gen era, they have lasted but the bottom of the chassis (and edges) are bent and dented (very thin metal).. hinges are ok but yeh they are not rugged at all… otherwise they are pretty decent laptops if you know your kid will look after it (my son is hopeless and my daughter is only a tiny bit better hehehe). They do like the fact they are light though older ones i have are about 1.3kg..

      • Thanks. The Dell 7390 has survived well, but battery getting old is all.

        • yeh ours isn't too different either, those old intel chips are pretty crap with battery management at least newer ones with e-cores are a little better. Latitudes are definitely better built than these though but the price difference is massive comparing new with new :)

          • +1

@scud70: Oh yes, I wouldn't be buying a new Latitude for school, just "refurb".

  • fantastic laptop, recommended one of these for my partners younger sister as she enters hs and she's loving it.

  • Hmm I bought the i7 verison from Costco on the weekend for $1,299 (https://www.costco.com.au/Computers/Laptops/Windows-Laptops/…).

I could return and get this from Centrecom instead for bascially $250 cheaper, though i5. Seems about the same otherwise. Anyone have any thoughts on whether the i7 is worth the additional cost?

I know the Costco website says the screen is 1920 x 1080, but that seems to be an error as MSI website says 1920 x 1200, which would bring it in line with the one from Centrecom.

I'd return it yeah. They're low-power CPUs, same core count and generation, they'll perform very similarly.

    • +4

Not worth the extra $250 for i7

      • +1

Thanks for the feedback guys, will be returning it.

I got one of the 12th gen versions last year. I love how light it is, it's kind of ridiculous. Very good battery life, very sturdy frame considering the weight.

Only real complaint is that it isn't very comfortable actually using this on your lap, because with the hinge design the screen is like a blade digging into your legs.

  • +1

Theyve changed the price to 1049$ now :(

    • Just saw that too :(

Is it worth the extra $50 though?

      • +1

idk, but its cheap and I can drive to pick it up so imma just do that. Unfortunately costed me 61$ more than if I ordered it earlier

        • I still think it's a good price for the weight and specs too.

Edit - Waited too long. Is $1,199 in my cart now :(

    • Increase in price due to the interest shown on OzBargain?

      • +1

more than likely. I reacted too slow but needed a laptop for my mum, and she took a lil too long man to reply. should have just bought and then refunded.

        • should have just bought and then refunded.

Always check the retailer policy if they accept change of mind refunds before trying this

  • $1,199!

    • And the "don't pay" price has gone from $1229 to $1299, lol BS detected.

  • Bastards!

    • Why are there so many Box Damaged Lenovos in the past couple of days?

    • Battery life on the Yoga 7i is not too good for its size, fan also almost always on.
