People in Australia has too much money, $70k is like nothing these days.

  • +4

Price has finally come down to what it should have been in the first place.. I find the styling is a bit jarring

  • Do you think Tesla is going to follow suit?

    • No, BYD is threatening their sales, not polestar

  • These are more expensive than Tesla without even the charging network

    • +1

Not as good as new Model 3 either. No wonder Polestar looks to be going under, Volvo has cut it loose.

  • +1

I'd recommend going for a test drive before ordering. I liked the driving experience and Google integration but disliked the infotainment system and the footwell is not flat so can be awkward getting in or out.

    • +1

How weird is the footwell!! I couldn't believe it as a passenger, made me feel very odd 😂

I'll keep driving my hybrid whilst waiting for a decent ev from Toyota.

    • +2

You mean hydrogen? Toyota ceo is still in his dreamland and believes hydrogen is a better solution than ev.

Just like their interior design Toyota is slow to move on. You'll pay a Toyota tax and end up looking at a Tesla anyways

    • bZ4x is out, it's average in every way but the badge will no doubt give it sales

I planned on buying an EV but after discussing with EV owners I realised below points that set me off and bought an ICE instead.

    Initial Cost:
EVs often come with a higher upfront cost compared to traditional fuel cars. Purchasing an EV priced above $68,000 may not be economically justifiable, especially when one can find quality ICE car with luxurious features for under $50,000.

    Limited Annual Mileage:
The justification becomes even stronger if the individual drives less than 10,000 kilometers per year. With a lower annual mileage, the potential savings on fuel costs associated with an EV may not offset the higher initial purchase price.

    Fuel Costs:
EVs are generally more cost-effective in terms of fuel consumption per kilometer compared to traditional fuel cars. However, if the annual mileage is relatively low, the savings on fuel costs might not be significant enough to bridge the price gap between an expensive EV and a more affordable fuel car.

    Luxury Features:
The argument also highlights that quality fuel cars under $50,000 can offer comparable luxury features. For individuals who prioritise luxury and are not inclined to drive long distances regularly, opting for a well-equipped ICE car at a lower cost may be a more sensible choice.

    Total Cost of Ownership:
Considering the total cost of ownership, which includes factors such as depreciation, maintenance, insurance, and fuel, the cost-effectiveness of an EV might be diminished for someone with a low annual mileage, making a quality ICE car a more attractive option.

It's important to note that the justification is context-specific and depends on individual preferences, driving habits, and regional factors such as government incentives for EVs. I tried to address a scenario where the higher upfront cost of an EV may not be justified based on the individual's usage patterns and the availability of competitively priced, luxurious ICE cars.

Which ICE crossover can I buy which does 0-100 in 3.7 seconds, has literally zero maintenance costs, does OTA updates, zero running costs and all the torque from get go. Oh and it will be great if it is also the safest car ever tested by Euro NCAP and is a top safety pick in America as well. How about a banging stereo, infotainment system and software that is light years ahead of the anyone else. I am waiting.

I understand that not everyone has the money to spend on a performance car but at 100k Model Y Performance is a bargain in my opinion.

      • You sound like you are to spend 100k. I won't stop you then

        • +1

          I already did

          • @dealsucker: Talking to ICE owners is sometimes like talking to a brick wall. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      • I mean no offence but spending 100k on a car kinda disqualifies your opinion from OZbargain. Saving money on a USB cable or some Enloops is not really a concern for you is it? or it shouldn't be if you can drop 100K on a car.

        • And why would it if an equivalent ICE car would have costed me twice the money and a whole lot more in fuel, maintenance and wear and tear. Ask your local BMW dealer how much do they charge to replace brakes on an M model.

    • Lmao thanks ChatGPT

  • Tesla Model 3 Highland is just too good and a lot more popular. Here we are.

  • Nice advertising spin behind this from polestar, at the end of the day their car aren't selling in large volumes. Majority of their sales in the country have been to Uber fleets like Splend.

    • Evs are too expensive for fleets… They depreciate faater than petrol cars

Who wants to be stuck with an old ev when the battery is worth more than the car?

      • Teslas actually don't depreciate any faster than the average ICE car, other EVs not so.

        • Teslas actually don't depreciate any faster than the average ICE car,

They haven't been around long enough to measure the long term devaluation. Not everyone buys near new cars. For those who are buying 10, 15, 20 year old cars, I'll put real money on it that they won't be choosing an old EV with terrible range and high potential for battery failure. The same way that no-one is buying a 10+ year-old mobile phone.

Just about to finalise my novated lease on another EV. Sucks that this deal wasn't available when had to decide, since this is 'more car' in terms of performance, but I guess I'm getting much more luxury in what I chose.

  • Anyone thinking about the battery? I'd be scared to buy a used car, not knowing how did the previous owner treat it, charging wise and what's the actual health of the battery, what are all the conditions warranty wise regarding the battery, so you successfully fulfil them.

    And if it's transferable…

Even worse, buying an electric car out of warranty… The price to replace the battery.

    • No different to buying an old euro car out of warranty and getting caught out with huge repair bills.

      • No different to buying an old euro car out of warranty and getting caught out with huge repair bills.

So in effect you agree with OP that old EV's will be low demand, just like old Euro cars are now due to their high risk of costly repairs?

        • No, in effect you are agreeing with JIMB0.

OP didn't say anything like that

          • -1

            @dangerdanger:

No, in effect you are agreeing with JIMB0.

Strange conclusion since I didn't offer an opinion on the matter I merely asked a question.

OP didn't say anything like that

Well since it's all there in black and white let's see:
OP: "Even worse, buying an electric car out of warranty… The price to replace the battery."
JIMB0: "No different to buying an old euro car out of warranty and getting caught out with huge repair bills."

This is the same argument. Older cars that are expensive to repair are much harder to sell on the used car market.

            • @1st-Amendment: All cars depreciate, so no point saying EV cars depreciate quicker. My last ICE was an expensive euro brand that had to be trashed because of 'catastrophic engine failure'. Talk about depreciation. 😂 Depreciation to $0. Sold off for parts /scrap. That was after their rip-off merchant servicing costs every year.

They had no words when I asked them if this was expected of a top end luxury car brand… Except to quote me a $45k replacement engine.

With my EV, I'm already ahead by not spending $45k on that ice engine. No Petrol cost, $0.05/kWh solar cost into the car, cheap servicing ($0 for first 5 years), no brake usage. I drive in the city, don't care about long range. Perfect for me. I'll roll it over in 5 years but if it keeps driving just fine, I'll keep it for longer.

I won't give the petroleum companies an extra dollar more than I need to. And definitely not that previous Euro car brand.

I don't fight the non-EV fanatics. Those guys can keep wasting their hard earned money, while I keep saving my money. ☺️ I'll keep driving past the $$petrol bowsers while those guys line up to fill their cars. You do you, I'll do me.

              • @dangerdanger:

All cars depreciate, so no point saying EV cars depreciate quicker.

Of course there is. Some cars DO depreciate quicker than others, which is important if you are interested in TCO.

No-one can predict the future, but both drazenm and JIMB0 (and myself) seem to agree that EV values will likely drop off a cliff just like Euro cars do after a sufficient period of time. As a comparison, I bought a 15 year-old Honda Jazz a few years ago, and sold it more than I paid for it. That is unlikely to happen with a 15 year old+ EV in much the same way that no-one buys 15 year-old mobile phones. This is very important factor for all those buyers of cheap older cars, of which there are many.

I won't give the petroleum companies an extra dollar more than I need to

Lol. Go check the share price of all the major energy companies. They are getting rich out of EV's. Anytime the government decides to funnel taxpayer money to some hare-brained scheme, where do you think that money ends up?

                I don't fight the non-EV fanatics.

The fanatics are the people who want use other people's money to force everyone to use a powertrain of their choosing because they believe the sky is about to fall. If an EV works for you then great. But why force others to use them if they don't work for them?

                • @1st-Amendment:

But why force others to use them if they don't work for them?

Correct. I'm not forcing anyone. As per your namesake. 😉

I'm not a used car purchaser so less important for me. Depreciation I can deal with, depreciation of my previous ICE car to scrap metal is not cool.

Petroleum companies are jacking up prices to suit their bottom line. At least I'm not immediately contributing to their profits, or to the profits of the manufacturer of ice cars (which I have limited love for, see above re "catastrophic engine failure $45k etc etc). I'd rather the money in my own pocket.

  • Its still too expensive

  • Hasn't Volvo pulled out of polestar

    • They sold down their share to the parent Geely

      • +1

Give it enough time and they’ll find some weird $hit to do with evs too… but anyway, my question was rhetorical…

Just because there are no exhaust fumes, doesn’t mean its all green and clean.

        • +2

Are you trying to be objective and logical here? I just have a feeling that it might not work.

      • +1

        Reduce bogans in land cruisers

        How exactly?

Since EV's are absolutely terrible at the things that Land Cruisers are good at, how many people do you think will be replacing their Land Cruiser with a Polestar?

        • There is a rumoured land cruiser electric coming up in 2026.

          • @kaleidoscope: If so, like the F150 lightning it will suck.
Because you can't get around physics. Batteries are still terrible at hauling big heavy loads long distances especially in remote locations.

  • EVs, works for me if less than 20k. Only need 150km range for city shopping.

  • Polestar is almost the least popular foreign EV brand in China.
Very poor sales number year after year.
The dealers are still selling brand new Polestar 2 which made in 2021, 3 yrs old in stock, cutting the price down to 30k AUD… interesting.

    • +1

China is going all in EV- there are so many options ranging from budget (5k USD) to ultra lux (1-200kUSD) models. I sat in a top spec Nio recently and the interior is very high end comparable to top end luxury euros. there's a lot of tech in there as well and gimmicks like VR headset for 360deg driving

      • +2

It's a no brainer when there are so many people with cars there, reducing the air pollution in urban areas and also transitioning hard towards green energy. China is a place you can taste and see the air you breathe. They're fast closing in on 50% renewable energy production.

      • But few of these "New energy brands" can make profit.
Several manufacturers like HiPhi, EverGrand and Weimeister, are already dead. Nobody knows who is the next, Xpeng or Nio?
Only Li.auto and BYD, 2 brands who can burn gasoline for charging battery, have positive cashflow.
So most of these low price EV is not a sustainable business, more like a Ponzi scheme for investors, while consumers should take this opportunity when they still can.

        • Nio has been bailed out by CCP (provincial government, but amounts to the same thing) on numerous occasions.. there's a lot of political will to prop up the industry which is expected. Having said that, if you look at Tesla and how long it took them to be cash flow positive and the astronomical valuations when they were burning money by the millions it's nothing new for tech growth companies

  • +1

I drove a Polestar 2 for a few days and it's a very nice car. Weirdly cramped on the inside due to the strange center console, but performance, handling, and range were very good. Unfortunately Polestar is brand that may not survive long term.

i'd rather not get any car with google built into the infotainment system in all honesty

    • software is pretty important on EVs

tesla are the kings, along with efficiency, cant really beat a tesla tbh

      byd are the worst

polestar are probably 2nd behind tesla even if it is by some distance - at least they have trip planner with automatic charge stops, most don't have that

      • I wont call the software on a byd the worst, its still better than anything from japan or germany/europe. Much better.

    • I am surprise no-one mention about the wording of the infotainment system.
It is only included for free for a few years.
Google might charge you after that and you have no choice to pay, since it is built in!

*** update: actually I was wrong, Volvo is the one that only included it for 4 years. I can't find any T&C for Polestars that talks about any limit ***

  • +2

Take the comments with a grain of salt and just test drive it (maybe even a few times in different configurations). Also give other EVs a test drive as well. I enjoyed the Polestar 2 and loved the liftback

  • As much as I want an EV, I don't want to pay the early adopter tax, which you still are at these prices. Just look at the crazy depreciation of 1 or 2 year old EVs compared to ICE cars.
In the meantime enjoy your brand new polestar or any other EV. I'll wait and snack it of you in 3 to 4 years for 50%+ off🤗

    • +1

It is very concerning indeed if they just discount the car so much so quickly. I was considering novated leasing for EV as I can get it GST and FBT free despite the high interest rate, but considering the resale it is making me think twice now.

    • which models are you talking about re depreciation

      • I’m curious too. I know Tesla doesn’t represent all EVs, but their resale price after 3-4 years is still pretty good, definitely over 50%.

      • +1

Everyone keeps talking about depreciation but then they argue that it is "yet to come". IE They don't know the future 😂

If they will depreciate that quickly, I know many ppl who will gladly then pick up those second hand EVs

  • +1

Does this include free shipping OP? Not interested if shipping isn’t included.

  • $70k EV without adaptive cruise control is just BS.
I love their design and shape but couldnt justify the value.

    • This. Once you have it, you can’t go without.

  • I dont have a problem with ev cars they are fantastic vehicles. But i have a problem with people who blindly think they are the perfect solution.

A lot of people in Australia cant afford to buy any new car let along a ev and when a second hand one drops enough in price the potential battery replacement costs will become a problem a redesign of ease of battery replacement would improve total vehicle life its nearly likebthey have designed ev cars to be short lived.

If you live in remote areas you dont see lpg only cars same for ev obviously a lot people have no concept of how big Australia is and lacking in infrastructure.

Transportation needs multiple approaches better cheaper public transportation in regional areas, good infrastructure for ev so ev uptake improves in cities and more populated regional areas, hybrid 4×4/trucks/etc for regional areas to keep the countries food production going.

Hopefully the real ev enthusiasts in the future can support each (forums etc) to keep these ev cars on the road longer at the moment diy info is very lacking.

Some of the hacks Honda Insight hybrid owners have done to get more mileage has been impressive.

  • isnt polestar going turn into deathstar ?

  • I bought 6. Thanks op.

  • Have driven for f
Weeks the polester 2 2023 and didn't like at all. A car that was re used, tunnel in the middle, small, eletrical issue at 30. 000kms, if you are taller then 1.80m you may struggle in this car. Tesla y all the way.
