    • Drive away price* from $ 68,500.51

      • Whilst affordable, last September I was at a show and could spend 30 minutes inside a model Y.
Then I walked over to a Polestar and tried to find comfort. Maybe it was just me but 1 minute was enough.
To be fair, in Europe the Polestar 2 is priced rather close to the mod Y and while you can order a Polestar 3 to be delivered in September there were no customers standing in line for. Tough times ahead for Volvo!

  • +4

The dual motor is pretty competitive at this price. Unfortunately adding the Plus pack to get it feature parity with a Seal or Model 3 blows it out a bit but there are advantages to not having a glass roof and I feel the Plus pack seat material in the Polestar is inferior to the base seat material.

You're really just losing out on the upgraded sound system and heat pump.

    • -3

      I wouldn't comapre a Polestar to a BYD like I wouldn't compare a BMW to a Kia.

      • Agreed but they're going to get compared regardless.

      • +3

Except it's more Audi to VW as opposed to BMW to Kia

      • They're both made in China, so what's the difference?

      • +15

Have you test drove these and looked at the quality?
I thoroughly test drove Polestar 2, M3 Highland and BYD Seal. Polestar had by far the worst materials, quality feel, build quality (squeaks, door gaps, road noise) and screens/infotainment systems.
I'm coming from a BMW X5. I would put the Seal and M3 Highland equal re quality/materials etc. M3 had better infotainment and minimalistic design, Seal had better daily use design (HUD, 360deg camera, wireless andriod auto, driver's instrument cluster digital display. good amount of real buttons and stalks) and a decent amount cheaper. Plus uses LFP batteries so won't catch fire catastrophically (no thermal runaway), can be charged right up to 100% all the time, doesn't have bad-for-everyone cobalt etc

Overall, I'd put the Polestar in the Kia/Hyundai space. Seal/M3 are way up there in the Audi/BMW space.

The car manufacturing landscape is changing more quickly that ever in the last 30 years.

        • +1

Highland uses LFP also (may be different for the slated performance iteration though)
Something to be aware of - no BYD cards yet support one pedal driving.

          • -1

@noz: Worth remembering that one pedal driving is less efficient than coasting. Also not great for the wellbeing of your passengers.

            • @tp0: I doubt many who enjoy OPD care much about the marginal difference in efficiency vs manual braking with regen. As for "Not great for wellbeing of passengers", that sounds very anecdotal. Braking brings a vehicle to a harder stop than releasing the accelerator with OPD.

            • @tp0: And how would you coast during city driving? Eventually you will have to stop for a traffic light.

        • +1

          That's a hot take

    • +1

      glass roof isn't always preferable

increases cabin heat and weight, reduces efficiency - and even more so if you use the air con to address the heat

alternatively you might be able to get away with a high quality ceramic tint

at any rate no EV comes close to the efficiency of the model 3

the seal costs you at least a 3rd more in electricity to run, the polestar is much better but still can't rival the m3

  • +4

There goes even more depreciation for the poor SOBs who bought previously…

    • +7

Are you trying to tell me that cars depreciate!? What!?

      • +5

Did you miss the "more" bit hey… that's ok, some people have trouble with reading..

      • +2

Nope, they’re a high yield investment.

        • Just whack an AMG badge on the back and you're set!

  • +1

Impossible to sustain when Tesla is there.
They've 30% margin atm . Even Chinese automakers are afraid of that

    • +2

It’s actually around 21%. It’s been declining steadily since about 2022. Every time Tesla discounts their margins goes down. Increasing competition is forcing Tesla to lower their prices and it’s only going to get more competitive. BYD overtook Tesla recently as the company with the most deliveries of EVs worldwide.

      • don't see any byds on the road

        plenty of highlands

curious comment, i wonder how well byd is doing if you remove china out of the equation

        • tesla has the same access to the chinese market, why is that relevant?

  • +12

    Runs on boomer tears

What a great corporate citizen China Polestar are!

    Taking one for the team!

  • -3

    Tesla or Polestar?
    So hard to choose

  • -5

I have to ask those with an EV or intentions of buying what happens when you wake up one day and your car has been updated to be slower or less efficient for the sake of "battery health"? We see it in every appliance from phones to TVs, is this something that you have even considered before buying an EV? Would be naive to think it won't happen in the vehicles life.

    • +12

OK buy an ICE car and watch it deteriorate with every km you drive and be worn out at 150,000km.

Also in ten years maximum be excluded from city centres and surrounding areas with higher taxes and fuel costs to stop you driving it.

The downside is definitely with ICE cars medium to long term.

      • +7

Mate that applies to most vehicles. Every km you drive every vehicle will deteriorate and wear out.

        • -2

What will the regulatory environment be for ICE vehicles in ten years?

It won’t be pretty, petrol stations having closing en masse, mechanics leaving industry and going EV, new spare parts no longer available as the ICE supply chain collapses.

          It’s called a death spiral.

Just the new Australian emissions laws alone will guarantee it.

          • +1

@Grok: Also if you think there'll be infrastructure to support this you're kidding yourself, imagine everyone owning EVs and how many more chargers you would need? It's been almost a decade now and we've got chargers running off diesel generators currently, make it 100 years and we might be on time. Melbourne tunnels were meant to finish 2022 btw, still no where near finished will be open 2027 at this stage. Australians are slooow at progression and infrastructure.

      • +5

OK buy an ICE car and watch it deteriorate with every km you drive and be worn out at 150,000km.

That's strange when a lot of ICE cars have driven a lot more than 150,000km and are not worn out

        • My Ford falcon lasting 450,000 with little to no services and cost me $1500. But EVs are better for the environment and more sustainable, and men born with penises are women.

          • +5

@lookingforadeal7: The modern world is a strange and terrifying place to you isn’t it

            • @GrueHunter:

The modern world is a strange and terrifying place to you isn’t it

More like there is level of ignorance that never ceases to amaze.
There is literally a million cars on the road over 150000km that aren't 'worn out'. What crazy reality do you have to invent for yourself to pretend that this isn't true?

          • +2

@lookingforadeal7: Cool story but they don’t make cars like that anymore.

Plus whatever you saved you paid for in fuel costs.

      • -2

They only wear out if you don't replace the worn parts before they fail. This is what happens when you don't look after a motor vehicle. But agreed, this is what most people do/don't know better about. And in 10 years, there may well be bans. More likely though, chaos as so many of the 3yo+ EVs conk out in the tunnels, in every transit lane, on every bridge ramp…

        • Think back ten years on EVs and even environmental activism.

Look where we are now, it’s accelerating.

Think what the regulatory environment and environmental loonies will be doing in ten years.

          It’s not pretty

I can’t see ICE cars having an easy time in ten years.

      • "Also in ten years maximum be excluded from city centres and surrounding areas with higher taxes and fuel costs to stop you driving it." You don't see anything wrong with this? This shouldn't even be a point to make and the other points you made apply more heavily to EVs then they do ICEs so try again?

        • Don’t shoot the messenger.

      • -1

I can also steal your car via keyless entry with a $300 gadget and a receiver.

        • +1

I can steal your car with a free coat hanger and a pair of pliers. Not that anyone could be bothered.

      • +1

Don't care about any of these cars, i need the Delorean like the one you got!

    • +1

Slower than? 40 km/h or 110 km/h? The speed range on Australian roads. 🤣🤣 Greatly doubt that.

    • They can't. If your cars been advertised to 1-100 in x seconds or output 300kw then they can fk around with that.

    • We see it in every appliance from phones to TVs

      We do?

    • Obvious you don't know much about EV or just pretend you do. and sounds like you don't even know about wear & tear & depreciation in all cars, many worth less than 50% in 3 years!

    • Your TV runs on batteries?

Oh, my bad. No 240v outlets under your rock

    • +1

ever notice how hot your phone gets? yeah thats what causes battery degredation

high quality evs have battery management systems

i'll bet you teslas LFP models with over 1 million kms will be a thing, on the original battery

keep charge between 15 - 80% and don't let it roast in the sun every day and it'll probably get there

  • -4

Why would anyone buy a Polestar, they're hideous looking.

    • +19

Each to their own. I feel the model Y is ugly compared to the 3. Prefer the polestar 2 MY24 to the 3.

      • +2

        3 is plain stunning!!!

        • +2

The Polestar 3 is awesome. But who can afford 130k-150k for a family car?

Need some large EV options at reasonable prices.

          • @hothed: 100k-150k market has been doing ok for years now..

          • @hothed: Most choosing to afford a 2600kg SUV can afford to look at a Polestar 3. Range Rover/BMW X# etc.

    • +2

Could say the same about the G22 4 series but people still seem to buy them

      • Yes but the 4-series is a 2-door coupe/convertible which by it's nature is an attractive body style. It's very hard to muck up a coupe.

        • +6

And yet BMW managed to make it one of the ugliest coupe's on the road

          • @Sim69: Aside from the grille, what else is ugly about it?

            • +7

@Mondorock: The ugliest part is the grille, why would I exclude that from my judgement of its looks?

              • @Sim69: Agree. My next car was always going to be BMW 4 until I saw the launch pics

              • @Sim69: I'm not saying exclude it, but if you're calling the entire car ugly, at least provide some criticism other than the grille.

                • @Mondorock: My criticism is of the grille, which is hideous and ruins the entire car. The rest of the car looks fine.

    • +1

polestar is most beautiful EV at it's price point

      you have zero style sense

  • +4

I like this Polestar 2 but.. Still too expensive for what it is. Needs to be $60k flat for the base model to be competitive. Also needs all their silly options included.

Sadly, they think they are a premium brand, and charging in excess of premium prices. Doomed for failure (see Infiniti).

    • Yep, first generation was reasonably priced, they went crazy with gen2.

    • -1

is polestar a premium brand? i thought it was a chinese EV?

      • +1

They think they're premium. Their share price went plummeting down last year. They're going to go bankrupt if they continue being delusional.

    • my thoughts exactly

  • +3

I'm disappointed the first comment wasn't "Thanks OP, bought 10".

  • Does the internal screen have apps like netflix and YouTube? I think more EV markers should integrate apple and Android auto into cars

    • +3

Does the internal screen have apps like netflix and YouTube?

Just what every car needs to keep drivers eyes on the road

      • +2

Actually they are good to have when charging car at public stations and times when you wait in your car for long periods.

      • At least in Tesla’s case you can’t access these apps while the car is in drive. You can only use them if it is in park

    • The infotainment runs Google Automotive. It has YouTube and Prime Video, but no Netflix. Google Chrome is available too, so in theory Netflix would work through that.

Interestingly, it does have Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto (at the moment).

Google Automotive is pretty good. But it's not up to par with Tesla and arguably BMW iDrive.

      • Thank you

      • The infotainment runs Google Automotive.

does it come with unskippable ads? and soon with an update interactive surveys 😭

      • Unfortunately Netflix doesn't work through either browser - Chrome and Vivaldi are available. At least I can't get them to work. Netflix gives an error that corresponds to something like "unsupported OS" from memory. Doesn't matter whether you select Desktop mode or not within the browser.

Plex doesn't seem to work through Chrome either, but it does work through Vivaldi.

  • Any bulk discount and cash back offers?

  • It’s not very asethitcally pleasing to the eye.

  • +1

68k EV car posted as a bargain. Jeepers this site has so many rich kids.

    • Meanwhile me waiting for BYD seagull to arrive < $25k. Heard it will come with sodium battery to keep costs low.

      • they still haven't even built out the production infrastructure for those batteries yet

and they'll need a number of revision to the tech to make them usable for a decently ranged EV

the first sodiam battery cars have a shitty range of 200km, if that

it'll be 3 - 5 years before we see sodium here in australia so pretending they know the retail price right now is just stupid

    • Admittedly it is towards the upper end of the avg new care price range - but the bit extra vs an ICE can quickly be offset if also have solar etc at home.

    • +2

Bargain == good value, not absolutely cheap.

      • -3

there’s not much good value about EVs. They are for cashed up boomers.

    • Meanwhile, me saving to buy an E-Bike

      • Meanwhile me saving to fill gas on ICE

  • I wouldn't touch a Polestar at their current price points, even with this discount

Share price is down over 95% from their peak, with questions whether they're going to go under in the near future

Don't want to get stuck with an expensive car with no support given how much is software driven these days

    Links: https://fortune.com/europe/2024/02/29/polestar-volvo-geely-b…

    • +1

Geely is going to pump the money to keep the brand alive.

      Also, https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/polest…

      • +1

Doesn’t mean they will keep doing it forever either

BYD and Tesla cutting prices are going to eat into their margins and volume

May not ultimately go under, but worth knowing the risk

      • Geely is there to make money. If the brand isn’t making money they are pulling out. Buy polestar now and there won’t be any warranty or service in 2 years max

  • Polestars such a uber car, that's how people see it when it been driven around like the Cammy.

  • $70k for an ev, whos dumb enough to but this

    • +1

Not sure anyone would but this, although I'm sure someone with buy it.

      • +1

        but me in the ass

    • +3

many paid that price for a Holden, would you say they were dumb?

      • +2

        Don't challenge Boomer theory.
