This or that MSI laptop for $999?

      Prestige: 1 kg, Thunderbolt 4
      ThinkPad: Durable, expandable, longevity/warranty/spare parts

      • +4

Prestige has the more colour accurate and brighter screen too.

      • Thank you!

These ‘ThinkPads’ are not durable. The frame is plastic.

        • +2

          Aluminum in the description

          • @Chridim: Only the skin is. All the screw bosses are mounted in a plastic frame under the al frame. The back is mostly held on by plastic clips.

    300nits 45% 👎

    • What does 45% mean? Tried googling, all I can tell is it's bad but not sure what it is

      • +4

300 nits It means it's not a very bright display. For comparison a MacBook Air has a peak brightness of 500 nits.

For 45% of the NTSC colour gamut, the total NTSC gamut is approx 72% of the SRGB which will be 45% of 72% of the SRGB gamut. When compared to the MacBook Air mentioned above which displays 99.8-99.9 coverage of the SRGB colour gamut which is bang on standard.

So don't expect to use the inbuilt display for video/photo colour grading or editing, let alone watch any HDR content. You're better off spending any additional budget (if it allows) for this computer on a quality display and using this in clamshell mode, or using the inbuilt display for things that aren't as important. I'd also be inclined to say your mobile phone will probably have a better display that this computer…

        • Thanks very much

        • You have it backwards, look at the graphs. 72% NTSC is approx 100% sRGB.

I would love to know why 45% NTSC is so common though.

          • @elusive: Good pick up. Eitherway, shit inbuilt monitor.

          • @elusive: you'd be shocked to find out the answer is… money
esp corporate fleet purchases DGAF about details like screen quality, heck they still have 720p options because it saves a dollar or something

            • @bender000: But why 45% specifically? What's so special about that number? It's not just the one panel either, it's a common budget colour space across a bunch of panels.

These machines are basically ideapads in disguise. All plastic construction and the guts are basically identical. I’d go for a T14/P14s or T16/P16s instead.

If you want to replace the screen, budget for a bezel as well as they’re glued in place, meaning they’re very easy damaged if removed.

    • I got a p14s recently and perhaps its my misunderstanding of what a P series workstation class thinkpad is but I thought it was too heavy and plasticky for what it's considered to be, a business grade laptop.

I have had experience using a t480s, L13, x1, e series and now a p14s. And the p14s construction definitely feels on the lower end of the spectrum. Closer to the L and E series.

P is for Plastic E is for Effigy

        T is for Thinkpad

      • P series these days actually share the same chase as T series ThinkPads, but usually with CPUs on a higher TDP. Most ThinkPads have plastic'ish shell anyway, but T/P series suppose to have magnesium alloy frame inside.

        • They do have a big Mg alloy frame under the plastic and the keyboard is top mounted, supported by the Mg plate. Just look up the palmrest for each model and you can see what it's built of.

        • they need to do a better job with the exterior finish of the P series. it feels so cheap for a supposedly premium thinkpad.

im actually in the process of trying to return mine without the ridiculous 20% restocking fee from the other deal posted on ozbargain.

they botched the dimensions and weight completely on the website. the laptop i received was 0.13kg heavier and 10mm thicker.

once you try the X series out, it's difficult to go back to anything else really.

Wrong re: plastic, I purchased an E14 Gen 5 last year. All aluminium including the frame. I’ve opened it up and added RAM and an additional NVME. Feels just as solid as my T430 from years ago, with a more premium finish.

      • That's incorrect, look for the golden coloured screw mounting locations in the frame underneath, especially where the hinges attach at the back - it's all plastic around them. Also, it's just a thin metal plate under the keyboard, which is part of the palmrest and not removable.

    • It's $800. Can we be choosy

    • I gave up on Lenovo in 2020. Deployed 12 Thinkpads to a client and 4 had logic board swaps within the first 2 weeks. Still haven't heard great things about their RMA rate to the point where I could ever recommend them.

This one comes down to $895 with MAR17 ebay plus code.
"Original price" 2044.90, so 56% off, higher percentage.
    Intel cpu.

A couple of years ago, you can get an Acer or MSI or Victus laptop with decent 2060, 3060 for $1K.
Not many of those deals anymore?

    • Acer Nitros and Gigabyte G5s with RTX 4050s or 4060s typically sit between $950 - $1.3K when they're posted here on OzB

That screen is a nightmare, not sure why lenovo just sticks with this kind of crappy screen. It is not an easy job to do a DIY screen replacement for laptops, a lot of clips and glue to deal with.

    • It's easy if you have the right tools and parts. But really if you want something better, you should have spent more for a better model.

You can always plug in an external monitor.

    Not a good graphics ipgu..

  • which one better choice in term of battery? 14" or 16"?

    • +1

      Same battery.
The 16" might use it a tad quicker with more display area to backlight.

  • This IS the same laptop Lenovo was selling for $999 with the DRAGON voucher during the Chinese New Year promotion last month.

E14 was also on sale for $870 back in December (source: I bought one).

  • +1

I've bought a few of these for small Business customers (10 or so now) and all have been fine in use.

The E14 is great for portability, the E16 for those who want a larger screen or those who are bean-counters and like the number pad.

In normal office use the screen is fine. It's not a gaming laptop etc!

I much prefer the big brands like Lenovo, Dell etc if you ever need spare parts e.g. hinges. I once bought an MSI and whilst it worked fine as soon as a hinge needed replacing, nada.

Also, don't get too hooked on specs. Sure i have a big office PC (AMD 3700X, 32G RAM, 3 monitors etc) but if I need a just use a laptop at home my go to is still an 11 year old Acer S7-391 i7, just 4GB, SSD, W10, touch screen and it still works fine for office and web etc. It still has about 2hrs life on a battery charge. As a bonus it can also be used as a cutting board - top side is white/glass and yes, someone who will remain nameless once used it to cut cheese on. Hi wifey!

  • Deal expired, but this better one still up for $895 (as I mentioned above): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/404828418133
