  • Today I think it is not advisable to buy any computer without a SSD as the main harddrive. The performance boost is just too great for the relatively small "extra" cost. I would save on CPU/Memory instead.

    • +7

Hi matt, fair call. We will add SSD upgrade options to our website now, these will be viewable online in the next 5-10 minutes.

      • A +1 for a responsive rep!

    • +1

It's easy enough to get your own SSD. Or if you want a combination of storage and speed get the Momentus XT 750GB.

  • +5

How is this a price "breakthrough"?

i7 current Gen 15' Samsung were selling for $570 last month.

Now that was a price breakthrough and they had dedicated graphics too.

    • -2

      Where's the deal then??

    • That was last month.
And the Samsung was a pretty cheap build in comparison. I had a look at it in store and it had very cheap and dirty speakers and other components. Good thing though of course was the price, dedicated graphics and i7 cpu. This Toshiba by comparison looks like a slightly higher quality build with better than average speakers. The jaw dropping deals that were around last month don't seem to be around any more.

      • It's a good deal yes, but mind you that CPU is an older model which does not support virtualization. most customers wouldn't care for this feature yes, but that is a first release 3rd Gen CPU, this is current release, current stock. Better battery life and additional advanced features. Compare the two;
        http://ark.intel.com/products/64899/Intel-Core-i7-3610QM-Pro…
        http://ark.intel.com/products/64901

        • +2

as far as I know, 3610QM much faster cpu compare to 3612QM, running at higher watts and temperature.

        • +2

I wouldn't be so certain of that. There are 2 versions of the 3612QM; one that is surface mounted, and one that is socket mounted.

Make sure you are comparing the correct models as I suspect that in this laptop it is the socket mounted version which is identical (in features) to the 3610 just lower speed and consequently lower powered, and thus possibly better battery life.

Comparison of: 3610, 3612 (surface mount), 3612 (socket mount)
          http://ark.intel.com/compare/67356,64901,64899

See 'Sockets Supported' FCPGA = (FC) Pin grid array, ie a socket, FCBGA = (FC) Ball grid array, ie the CPU is soldered to the main board.

There used to be issues with BGA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_grid_array#Disadvantages) particularly in regards to GPU (old HP DV6 series laptops were notorious), but I am sure that most of these have been overcome.

Also, just to clarify, the Intel 3610 doesn't support VT-d but does support VT-x.
VT-d is for passing physical hardware directly to the virtual machine, whereas VT-x allows the virtual machine to take advantage of built in hardware acceleration of the CPU. VT-d is very nearly useless on a laptop anyway because there is no additional hardware that you would want/be able to pass through.

And to throw another point in, if you are using it for virtual machines, then the slightly higher clocked 3610 might be more suitable.

          Benchmark results:

    • you're comparing a 15" with a 14" laptop?

  • Tempting.
No dedicated graphics but still a good price for an i7 laptop.
Can't believe some laptops are still made without gigabit ethernet.
Specs don't mention it so I assume it's not dual band WiFi.

  • No dedicated graphics means not it's not that great for gaming/graphic design purposes, and if you're not gaming or designing then you probably only need a laptop with a i5 CPU.

    • It is only a 14" notebook. So I think the niche is power (i7) and portability, not gaming.

      • +1

Anyway, what niche are you talking about that needs the "power" of i7 but not a dedicated graphics card?

    • +1

So you might be more interested in something like this:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83583

      • Yeah whoever's in the market for one. I've already got an i7 laptop back when $1200 was considered cheap - cbb looking for the Ozbargain link lol it was a couple of years back now.

But yeah, I don't vote on laptop deals anymore, all these ones are average prices now. It's the Ultrabook type laptops that command the higher prices these days…

Show me a bargain on an Ultrabook, then I'll vote.

  • Your shipping is $30 to WA. That means this deal is cheaper:
    http://www.choosenclick.com.au/laptop-computers/110537-toshi…
    ($728.58 & free courier shipping)

    Can you do better?

    • +1

Hi Make it so, the $30 allows up to 6KG's as our website calculates freight off weight brackets. if you only want the laptop and nothing else I can process freight for you @ $18 inc. more products = more weight = more cost!

  • While this isn't too bad a deal, there have been better. Centrecom were selling the Toshiba 850 (i7 3610qm, Win7 Pro, AMD HD7610, 750GB) for $699 + a $1 upgrade to 12GB. Seems like a higher spec for the same price, but they are out of stock now.

    • oh yeah the last minute 'after market' RAM upgrades… no thanks.

      • Based on what reasoning?

  • Won't call this much of a deal at all, since better spec laptops as others have mentioned have been sold in the past months with same/similar pricing.

I bought myself a Toshiba L850 from Bing Lee for $699 last month, with specs:
    -i7 3rd Gen 3610QM up to 3.2Ghz
    -8GB DDR3 RAM
    -NVIDIA GT 630M graphics
    -1TB HDD

    • +3

      Okay bruc3,
      a) Proof?
      b) This deal is no longer available at Bing Lee anyway

This deal is here now, readily available and I can put one in your hand today. If you want to post previous transactions from months ago then you're defeating the point of OzBargain. On todays market with todays stock this deal stands as a great purchase. I can't comment on how the deal will stand compared to deals from months ago, or from future deals to come up in the coming months, but living in the present this deal today is a great offer with no direct competition readily available.

    • screen size?

      • It was 15" 1366x768 Resolution

  • +2

I know the specs say it's 100mbit ethernet but is this really true? wtf is it with OEMs making machines with 100mbit ethernet in 2012? Even the lesser variants of the L840 seem to have gigabit ethernet.
Was thinking this would make a great home server, if it had gbe.

  • Compare to this Dell (first one on the left) from the Inspiron clearance sale

    http://www.dell.com/au/p/clearance-inspiron-laptop-deals?c=a…

Looking for a machine like this for the parentals, I know that Dell warranty and support will trump Toshiba in my experience.

This deal really isn't that competitive at all. I'm not going to bash this business, however I'm going to identify some issues relating to this deal.

    1. There are cheaper options with better specifications, in the past, and present. I'll refer you to the comment above this one for the present, and the past in the earlier comments.

    2. Your marketing a product to a community of consumers who research products and offers more than the average consumer. Implications are you're trying to tackle the competitive consumers, so your price and product needs to be just that.

    3. You have now lashed out in frustration in the criticism that we have provided. From a business vantage point, your presenting a business that doesn't listen to consumers. That's insulting to this sort of community. We are the ones judging your deal, not yourself.

From your point of view, think these steps may help:
    1. Accept the criticism
    2. Find out areas for improvement based on criticism
    3. Find out how to improve these areas
    4. Improve these areas.
    5. Communicate that your business has strived for a better deal, and then advertise it.

It is only then that you'll find us flocking to your deal and spreading it to everyone. We respect good deals, not people trying to rip people off.

    • +4

Chripper, thanks for your overly exaggerated reply - you may think we have "lashed out" or are trying to "rip people off", but we have built ourselves a reputation on OzBargain and the IT Industry for offering quality products for great prices - our previous post history + customer base is proof enough of this.

There are always keyboard warriors on OzBargain, yourself included, who are keen to jump the gun and make the deal look bad for the fun of it, all I said above was to only compare this deal to CURRENT deals available on todays market instead of running through EOL and discontinued models which you can't even purchase anymore.

The reason for this is merely RELEVANCE to this post - what good is advertising an amazing deal that is no longer available? It's merely a tease and irrelevant to a consumer looking to purchase a product TODAY instead of months ago when the deal was available.

We are always happy to accept criticism and my first reply on this post is proof enough of this, but if you honestly expect me to take it onboard and improve our services and products based off this criticism it needs to be constructive criticism instead of just bashing the deal with again irrelevant deals and useless comments.

Thanks anyway for your neg, there's always that one guy in the crowd and congratulations - you're it.

FYI Guys, this deal is now almost sold out, we only have 4 units left out of 40 when the deal first went live this morning so the deal will be expired soon.

    • I agree with you Chripper, everything except the "rip people off". VisionTech IS providing a good deal.

This deal is good, but it's only good. We have had some great deals in the past, and I'm sure if you look hard enough you will find some great deals now. This, however, is only a good deal, and by all means if you need a new laptop now, this should certainly be on your consider list.

      VisionTech, please note the following;
      - "OzBargain is a place where we share and discover the best bargains in Australia"

Consideration as to whether an item is a bargain or not, IS generally based on previous deals (as well as speculation on future deals). Perhaps a little tolerance for people who provide some pricing history of similar items and you might not be accused of "lashing out". In some ways it provides a community driven camelcamelcamel.com

      • +1

this deal is good, you guys can't compare a 15.4/6 inch laptop to a portable 14", they are in different category, why not take the Samsung 14", Dell 14" i7-3rd Gen and compare to this deal? or find something with 15.x" laptop at this weight? I'll be all over it if your deals is light in weight!

but honestly I won't order from VisionTech again.
see my previous comment, I ordered something from them & received a completely different color/model, email them asking what's going on but never receive a reply/they simply ignored it, it doesn't cost me much so I won't bother, except no more business from me & bad words for your so called "service"!

VisionTech, no matter the deal is big or small, once you screw with your customer, you're done!

        • This laptop is 2.1kg, the 15" L850 is 2.4kg

          Size:
          - L840: 342mm x 232mm x 32.5mm
          - L850: 380mm x 242mm x 33.5mm

So L840 is slightly smaller and you loose the numpad.

  • I was wondering how the 2 for 1 on AMD gaming PC's went the other week. I couldn't make it to the store due to illness so missed out. It would have been good to know which models were on sale so I could decide if it was worth going.

Those worried about no GPU - how many serious gamers want a 14" screen and 1366x768 resolution?
At that resolution, the Intel HD 4000 will be fine for a lot of games but why bother?
Interesting that very few retailers stock the L840 series - and I can't find this particular model anywhere else….
i7 in a 14" with no GPU and no SSD is definitely a niche market…

VisionTech I assume one reason for the discounted price is that this is Windows 7 and nearly every new PC you can buy these days comes with Windows 8??

    • hi GreatWhite,

Yes that's true, Windows 8 has forced alot of laptop prices down. Most consumers after Windows 8 are still buying a Windows 7 pre-loaded machine, saving their $100-$300 on the older model then paying $14.99 more online to Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro :) Works out much cheaper and you get the same software!

FYI - our AMD Gaming Sale was a hit, we did sell through all machines we had in stock + took around 60 back orders for the deals which were filled the following week, we also handed out a few hundred free games vouchers and our gaming tournament with deathdog (#1 Ranked BF3 player worldwide) had our hardcore gamers literally screaming at the screens all day long while deathdog was kicking butt :P

All in all, the atmosphere and vibe on the day was great! We will have photos uploaded to our facebook this week some time, check them out when you get a moment!

  • Not worthy of a deal post, but for those in the market for a 15" laptop i got this

    http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-envy-m6-1117txc7e77pa-win-8-std…

For $976 from Officeworks the other day - 5% discount off the megabuy price. No SSD so I swapped in one I had lying around. Pretty happy.
