  • Its called a 7 eleven giftcard but it seems it can be used anywhere? Am I right or going crazy?

"This 7/11 Digital Gift Card can be used for online, over the phone or for mail order transactions at any merchant where Visa prepaid cards are accepted."

    • +7

You can use it anywhere, as long as:

The merchant is categorised as MCC 5541 (Service Stations) or MCC 5499 (Miscellaneous Food Stores – Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets), and

The merchant chooses to accept prepaid Visa gift cards as a payment method. For example, EG Ampol will let you use this gift card if you are purchasing fuel, but EG Ampol will reject this gift card if you are purchasing a gift card (e.g. WISH, Amazon).

Credit to WookieMonster for this response.

Nice one! Thought to share I just tried using the gift card at an independent servo (Medco) and it got declined. I tried twice to make sure it wasn’t reading error. I wonder if it has something to do with the machine charges card fee? I think it was like 0.4% for Visa card.

No issue at all when I used it at BP earlier this month.

          • @foxes28: Thanks for your insights!

I am not entirely sure why Medco would decline your gift card. It is hard to tell without further information… There was a report back in March 2024 that a 7-Eleven digital gift card was declined at Metro Petroleum, so it is curious to hear that two chains of independent service stations have declined 7-Eleven digital gift cards.

I wonder whether the machine charging card fees actually has something to do with the gift card being declined, but I have used regular Activ Visa gift cards at merchants that have added a Visa surcharge and it has not been declined.

I also wonder whether the Medco (and Metro Petroleum) service station is using MCC 5541 (or MCC 5499). There are multiple MCCs related to fuel, e.g. MCC 5983 (Fuel Dealers: Coal, Fuel Oil, Liquefied Petroleum, Wood), MCC 5172 (Petroleum and Petroleum Products), MCC 5542 (Fuel Dispenser, Automated). An EFTPOS machine where you pay for fuel for automotive vehicles at an attended service station is supposed to be assigned MCC 5541, but it does not mean that the EFTPOS terminal provider will always assign the correct MCC.

Did you get a receipt that mentions the response code explaining the reason the gift card was declined?

            • +1

@WookieMonster: Unfortunately I didn’t get any receipt at all but I recall the machine says “payment declined”. Now that you mentioned it, I should’ve asked for a receipt. Maybe one day I’ll fill up there again and ask for receipt. I’ll let you know when I do!

    • Mail order petrol sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

    2% thanks, but no thanks.

    Wow

Bought like $26.45 worth of these the other day on Cashrewards, and it got delivered instantly.. probably they just write if they suspect fraud or need a real human to check the order.

    • They put that in the terms to give themselves some wiggle room if things go wrong. Usually delivery is instant/within a minute or two.

Can be good if you only need a specific denomination, like $33.69 or like $25.05, otherwise just stick to ShopBack cashback deals on these 7/11 Activ Cards.

2% is quite rubbish for the rebate rate of this card, though!

    • I split a payment at my local Shell last week - the remaining 1c of one card and the rest on another I already had aha

    • Under what circumstance would you need a specific denomination?

  • +1

I had a local 711 refuse to.do split payment with these.. Apparently it was this and cash or all only a single card.

They're just being dicks. You can do 3 cards (the third needing to finalise the balance).

  • And if you don't like 7-Eleven due to them systematically grounding choppers, then you can use this at other branded servos.

Woolworths servos work better for me with 5% discounted gift card, 4c Origin discount and 4c Woolworths discount.

Nice, same here, that is the best option. Also stuff 7 Eleven, the 25 cent killed it for me. Works even better with 6% discounted Ampol gift card which can be used at EG Ampol (but gift card is only get 6% sometimes when ShopBack have that promo) and stack with Orgin 4 cent, WW 4 cent

        • How to you check balance on Ampol digital gift cards? I found it is a real pain using Ampol gift cards compare to Wish gift cards.

          • +1

@Sidor: There are four ways you can do this:

            • Check the receipt for the last purchase made using the gift card. The receipt should say in the section with details on the gift card redemption Remaining Card value is $xxx.xx Card Expiry xx/xx.

            • Call the AmpolCash team during their operating hours.

            • Email the AmpolCash team.

            • Check the balance displayed on the gift card in Apple Wallet or the WalletPasses Android app. (There can be a delay of up to 24 hours in the remaining balance being updated after a purchase.)

          • +1

@Sidor: ShopBack gift card link provides the balance. The balance is always refreshed. Not this is not true for all gift cards but yea Ampol ones I got from ShopBack, shows updated Balance

  • Wow 2% that’s amazing
