Wow, their website looks like it has been created via Airtasker. Temperamental links, incomplete sentences (e.g. FAQ - Activities - Motorcycle info)

Probs wouldn't trust these guys for any emergency event O/S.

    • +10

      Sounds kinda you're quite…ticked off?

      • +2

        lol, nice

    • It just matters who the insurance is underwritten by, not how sexy their website looks…

      • +4

If they can’t finish a sentence I am not trusting them with an overseas emergency.

You can, I’m not your Dad.

        • If they can’t finish a sentence I am not trusting them

          Look, I just…

    • @Andoes

      You are 100% correct!

They are set up to take your money and then ignore you or make it incredibly difficult

I checked the reviews on Product review and very telling indeeed…..

5 stars for easy application and payment process (of course)
1 star for claims and customer service.

Medical expenses not covered in the policy I was looking at ? Thought that is the whole point of travel insurance 😂

    • +2

For travelling outside of Australia, their policies provide you with unlimited medical expenses.

    • +2

Travel insurance PDS change all the time. Devil is in the detail no matter who the provider is, only gotten worse since COVID too.

  • Tick doesn’t appear to have annual plans….

  • +2

Funny to name an insurance brand after a parasite.

    • -1

very fitting actually when you read the "neg" reviews

  • +1

are there any actual good travel insurance firms? every time I've tried to make a claim they have always made it impossibly difficult to do so. I still buy it for the medical coverage but it'd be nice to have coverage by a company who doesn't make more minor claims as hard as possible.

    • Im no expert, but given how i see the PDS change over the years when i look for my trips, i think some just have better marketing and maybe more competent people on the phones. Otherwise its really about does the PDS cover/exclude what you need, and without checking, you basically just gambling.

      • It's not things that aren't technically covered, it's more like demanding a receipt for every item that was in a lost bag before they will pay out, or demanding written confirmation from the airline that i didn't already receive compensation for a significantly delayed flight (Qantas put me on an American Airlines flight, and neither call centre had any record of what happened). I had coverage, the problem is geting them to actually pay out.

        • I hear ya. Many travel insurance companies have similar stories, its a common hassle across most brands i have checked reviews for. I dread the day i need to file such a claim.

        • @get-innocuous you're absolutely right.
I had a travel insurance policy, and Jetstar decided to cancel my domestic flights 2 hours before I left for the airport.
Luckily Virgin had a flight I could jump on instead, for $1200.
My policy covered these replacement flights - except it didn't, because when I submitted my claim they asked for the reason the flight was cancelled. I contacted Jetstar, and they said the flight was cancelled for "operational reasons". Not covered according to the travel insurer.

          WTF ?

There are people who actually pay for travel insurance and don't just use a CC with one?

    • +2

Wanted to say the same thing.
PSA: Book your holidays with your credit card for complimentary travel insurance (if it’s included).

      • +1

Depends what you need. Like you i try to use CC one if i dont have any specific requirements/concerns, but does not always work out with CC churning or if i have a particular requirement. The conditions and exclusions in the PDS change over time (for example, travel delays, cancellations, accidents when doing certain activities, pregnancy, theft of certain posessions etc), i've almost been caught out a few times, so its quite easy to think you are covered for something when you arent.

    • I used to have an Amex and I found that either you can't use it to pay for your flights directly at the airline's website or the fees are quite hefty, so I just ended up using my debit card, which voids the travel insurance on the CC.

Now I have a Visa CC with a comprensive Allianz cover, so I don't pay for a seperate travel insurance anymore unless I travel to a developing country. A $60 policy with Tick costs about the same as my uber ride to the airport for a complete peace of mind.

      • complete peace of mind.

        Reviews seem pretty horrid.

    • +1

Some use flyer points to book… i think that removes the option for CC travel insurance right?

      • +2

Most i have seen will allow you to also use your accomodation or travel activities (like tours) to meet the travel spend eligibility requirement.

    • If you take note of the surcharge you pay, and the annual fee on the credit card, the 'free' travel insurance is not really ever free. Not to mention the international transaction fees on most cards once you get where you're going

      • Of course, but generally one should only sign up to a CC with the annual fee either free or offset by sign-up bonuses, and cancel it before the next yearly fee rolls around.

And yeah, international purchases are silly but native-AUD spend (e.g. airfare) usually entails no extra fees and will usually be a large enough sum to cover the $200 - $500 most cards need on prepaid travel costs to activate the policy.

      • My Bendigo bank card has zero annual or international transaction fees.

You get complimentary travel insurance if you spend X amount on travel expenses, e.g. tickets, accommodation, holiday activities, etc.

        • That's good for you, but generally when you buy an airfare on your credit card you are charged 1.2%-1.29% on top of the airfare, https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/help/articles/fees-and-charges . Like I said, it's cheaper than buying the policy separately, but it's definitely not free

          • +1

            @PhilToinby:

            Jetstar

            There's your problem.

But usually one can use hotel spend/other prepaid costs/etc also to meet the cap. There's generally always something or other I can buy in AUD with no fees to meet the $250 limit on my card to activate.

    • That fact you have to ask this says to me you didn't even read the PDS for your CC coverage.

      • I've read the PDS each time, and besides not covering COVID for a while (which basically all now do), there is never usually anything untoward in there and coverage is decent. Most are simply standard Allianz/QBE/etc policies. E.g. ANZ's which I'll be using next month.

        • Most "bundled" travel insurance includes lower limits and less claimable events than a real travel insurance policy.

As an example, the ANZ document you link to only includes
          "Alternative Transport Expenses"
Up to a maximum total limit
          of $2,000 per cardholder
          or spouse

For long-haul journeys, this low level of cover is useless - if shit happens and you need to buy alternative flights to a far-off destination at very short notice then you're likely to be on the hook for a lot more than $2K.

          • @Nom: If your long-haul is to a super remote location sure, get extra protection. But $2K should cover one-way economy to Europe/Asia/America easy.

            • @GS9891: I was about to post "Good luck getting to London tomorrow for $2K" … but surprisingly I just looked at Qantas and it's only $1500 to go tomorrow with zero notice 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • I travel quite a lot overseas (3+ a year) and they are my go to travel insurance providers. Tick are one of the cheaper policies out there and they have generous coverage too I believe. Their underwriters are Mitsui, so I don't think they'd have liquidity or financial problems to pay the claims.

Whilst their claiming process is a bit frustrating and slow, essentially everything is paper based and you have to send them emails back and fourth with scanned documents, they do respond regulary and pay when you have a solid case. When I had Covid in the US back in 2022, they paid the maximum allowance as per my policy limits ($2,500) for my extended stay (hotels, airbnbs) and a new flight as well.

I recommended them to my friend and when they had to reschedule their overseas holiday, Tick also paid the max limit for them too. They ask for a lot of documentation including medical certificates, especially if you have a pre-existing condition, travel itineraries, tickets, passport, medicare card so if you don't have the patience to obtain and send those, don't use them.

    • It's the 'solid case' part that I have problems with

These guys used to be called Insure'n'go.

I was told that the second hand lenses that I possess, along with photos of all the gear and serial numbers, prior to travelling, were not covered as I didn't have proof of purchase. Note most insurance companies are happy with proof of purchase OR proof of ownership.

Another occasion I tried to claim for a phone and once again it was denied unless i could produce the original receipt.

I had all my policies refunded since then and will not touch this company.

Not sure about medical side, but my experience with unimportant tangibles tells me not to trust them with my medical cover either.

      • I agree this sucks - but how do you end up without proof of purchase for your phone and camera gear ? Surely you just look at your order history in eBay, Amazon, WhateverSite and there it is ?

Even if you bought it from a physical store, surely you'd photograph/scan the receipt for anything valuable ?

        • That's the loophole they shot straight through and one of the caveats of my post.

You'll be fine for anything you have a proof of purchase for.

My point is that proof of ownership is not enough.

In the case of camera lenses, it is fairly common to be using second hand gear if you're not operating commercially.

I provided all the details for context so that it wouldn't be misconstrued, understanding that the above scenario is unlikely to affect all or many customers and only those in a situation similar to mine, where you are using second hand gear without proof of purchase, that even being careful to show proof of ownership, that it wasn't sufficient.

          Hope that's clear.

Website is crashing when I try get a quote lol

  • Usually use Tick as it's been the cheapest but Qantas Travel Insurance isn't a bad choice right now for the bonus points. $40 extra with Qantas for a year overseas + 7000 points for me. Bonus free domestic flight in Japan.

This should probably be marked expired until the website starts working again.

  • Please note cover for Cruises (Ocean or River) are currently not available.

Managed to get a quote but saw this :(

    • Floating petri dishes probably don't have great profit margins.

    12.5% ShopBack as well :)

but then… "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later."

    • +2

Under exclusions: "This Cashback deal is not valid together with…vouchers or Promo codes not featured on our platform"

    • The error was due to website issues. I tried to combine, we shall seee

  • I've used TICK travel insurance for some years without issues when travelling annually to a remote fishing destination.Good value and a good underwriter (Mitsui Sumitomo) and owned by Europ Assistance. As an aside, always ensure your policy includes "Emergency Medical Evacuation".

    • how has it gone with getting any claims paid out?

  • -1

Not really a deal. The price has been hiked up and after applying the discount it just reverts to what it was few months ago. I know becuase I checked. Fake deal!

    • Well the alternative is not getting the old price back??

      • That would make it a FOMO driven "deal"
