Hope they find those bastards that scratch the cards off and put them back for victims to buy

    • +2

How? The package look likes cant-be-closed-once-open though

      • +1

They are sophisticated can't even tell it has been tampered with

    • Oh my gosh this happened to me once too! I thought maybe it was some kind of manufacturing defect. Damn…

      • sorry to hear that

currently it seems to be Brisbane area that is affected

        where you at?

  • +3

Serious question, can these be used to pay ATO?

    • +2

      Yes

    • -5

No. Only Zune gift cards can be used to pay the ATO and any major government organisation or business.

    • Also serious question: can someone please enlighten me on what’s the story with ATO payment using such cards? Or is there any good FAQ on this? I’ve tried searching, there are hundreds of posts/comments mentioning ATO payment, but people obviously already know how it works.

Let’s say I need to pay ATO $1000. Is it just about purchasing these gift cards, collecting Flybuys points (sort of making a profit of $50 == 10,000 points) and then paying ATO using these cards vs a regular payment of $1000 via bPay where I don’t get any Flybuys points/"free" money? Or is it something else I’m missing?

      • +1

That sounds like a great way to make a huge mess. I did read a forum post somewhere here with some detail of how it works and where it can go wrong.

Oh here it is. Damn the search on this site actually works! I keep forgetting that fact.

        • Hmm, sorry, @Loopholio, I can’t really find how it works in the thread you shared. Potential risk is there, but what are the actual benefits? Why do people bother?

          • -1

@olderman: Money is the reason for the risk. Few people bother, I haven't seen anyone say it's worked for them. Maybe give it a shot and let us know how it goes?

            • @Loopholio: What money? Are you saying my understanding is correct and in this particular case you get $50 profit? (in other cases you may get 10% “discount” I assume)

      • +1

Yes basically u use these as giftcards to pay the ATO (as u would like any other credit card). I think there's a limit of about 10 transactions per day tho from memory (there are 2 ways to pay credit card…. If u get stuck let me kbow)

This way u get credit card points by buying from Coles and flybuys points too(as opposed to no credit card points by spending at govt organisation)

        • anyone experience ATO refund to the card? ATO refund my payment to the card but have been checking the card, the card still showing $0

          • @fishandchips: Yes. I had an experience where I overestimated my tax debt so had overpaid tax in advance using multiple of these cards. ATO doesn't issue a refund for overpayments made by credit card (normal or prepaid), instead they cancel the original payment so the money goes back to the card.

They asked me for the card details so the payment could be cancelled. However it turned out the transactions they cancelled were on different cards than the ones I provided in response to their request for card details.

So if you made payments using multiple cards, make sure to check all of them to find which one had the cancelled transaction.

          • @fishandchips: Just don't overpay.
I have overpaid by a few dollars but never hundreds so haven't experienced that issue but have read of instances here

            • @SmiTTy: few hundred probably they won't care, I overpaid my account by $1500 since Jan and they just sit in my account as credit. I suppose if you leave 10k in it they'd do something to avoid people screaming them stealing their interest money because each month transactions showing a few cents interest and another line immediately next to it showing 'remission of interest charge' to cancel it out together.

    • Has anyone tried to pay ATO with these cards this year and did it work?
I remember last year there was a period where you could not use them to pay.

      • I used 10 yesterday and the day before.

  • +1

It doesn't look like Coles will bring back the 10% cash discount deal anytime soon.

    • Safe to say that deal is dead. The days of "free money" are gone.

      • +3

i used to use them to pay my tuition fee for uni =)))) ( nearly 12k )

    • the 10%-off deal will come back, one way or another

  • +1

The problem is no stock at all.
People take them home now secretly and bring them back to store when the offer is on to pay and activate

    • +2

      Speaking from experience I see?

      • No, because my neighbourhood is faster than me on that

    • These ones are easily available unlike Woolworths

      • +4

Woolworths is terrible. The large denominations are all gone, and asking the staff usually ends in a no.

    • I think the issue is coles and wooli never had enough of cards for people to buy.

if they have enough no one will do that.

      • Who knows? You ara just guessing

        • How is it any more a guess than your comment which was based on a sample size of 1 neighbour.

  • -1

The problem is there are so many tampered gift cards that you need to open them in front of staff and even then they're reluctant to do anything

  • -1

    please confirmed, am I correct.
understood you got flybuy point worth $10
but they charged $5 or $7
    so you are paying:
$95 for $100 coles MC gift card
$243 for $250 coles MC gift card

    • +1

      247

      • lol yeah i thought something was wrong with me when i saw it was only $3 off

    • +5

      you are technically paying $105 for $100 + 2000 points ($10 flybuys dollars) or $257 + 2000 points

    • +2

Seems like a lot to go through for such a little discount. I can't understand how these cards are so popular to game.

      • +1

        What's so hard to understand?

This deal allows you to purchase a physical MasterCard debit card at a discount using a credit card of your choosing (with attached rewards/minimum spend incentive) that you can then use to pay bills that otherwise cannot be paid for at a discount, e.g. ATO, council rates, utilities. Who doesn't want 4% off those? It's a no-brainer.

It's just a shame we're limited to 5 per flybuys account these days.

  • Can i pay ahpra with this?

    • Probably, given you can pay ATO with it. You cojld also consider the single use card through zip pay if you want to earn CC points for it

    • Online? Dont think wo

    • +1

You can’t split payments with Ahpra

  • +1

    Not wasting my time……….AGAIN!

  • So 5% profit on $100.

    • +1

      4.7%

  • Is it worth it with the risk of tampered cards?

    • Open on the spot after purchasing and if tampered get store manager to refund.

      • It is great to give away as gift, opening this dfeats the purpose.

        • Nice of you to be gifting these, I'd think majority buys for their own use

      • Open before paying—that’s what I did, and it saved me a lot of refund hassle.

    • Are we meant to buy the gift cards and what activate it in front of the manager or to check balance? Sorry new to this. How to tell the gift cards have been tampered with? Thanks

  • -6

Can i use flybuys dollars to purchase gift cards?

    • FYI, you’re being negged for questions that are asked every time these promotions run and are easily answered in the FAQ page linked in my OP.

    • Not directly anymore.

  • -5

Can use Vanilla cards to buy these? Can use Perfect eftpos to buy these? Can use these to buy these?

    • FYI, you’re being negged for questions that are asked every time these promotions run and are easily answered in the FAQ page linked in my OP.

      • +1

I know. I helped the other newbies asked these questions so they don't get negged. I took the negs for all of them.

    • -1

Just get the cash off these cards and use that to buy more.

  • +3

Can I use cash to buy these?

    • Only if you use a self serve checkout and slip it in the machine while the staff aren't looking.

      • -1

Make sure you are using old paper notes which you can buy through ebay.

  • +1

limit 5 per account (and likely wont get good flybuys offers for a while on that account)

    • -1

Bs. I still do and with all the 4-wk $50 promo

    • +1

Year ago deal like this made my spending limit high as it did not differentiate from regular spending.

  • Can you buy 5 in a single transaction or do you need to do them separately?

    • +2

You can buy 5 in a single transaction or in separate transactions.

  • I assume this is for all states?

  • -3

If I buy 10 of them, am I going to get 20,000 points?

    • +2

No, there is a limit of five gift cards per Flybuys account = $10,000 points.
      https://freepoints.com.au/coles-13-nov-2024/

      • -3

Could be limit of 5/day, not 5 for the whole duration of the promo (TBC though)

        • +2

'up to 5 times per Flybuys account'

          not tbc.

  • Basically, I buy $100 worth of Coles gift card. There is $5 fee. I get $10 worth of flybuy points that can be used for grocerries.

Now if I use that $100 worth of Coles Gift Card to buy Coles Grocerries, I am actually paying ($100+5-10 = $95) $95. Am I correct?

    $5 discount for $100 card?

    For $250, it comes out to $250+7-10 = $247 or $3 on $250?

  • I suppose if my $5 discount on $100 card is correct, then I can go ahead and guesstimate my next week grocerry bill. I buy the card first. Then go back into the same store. Buy the grocerry and pay using the card. I am basically getting 5% off $100

    • +1

Your maths is a little funky.
You are paying $105 out of pocket for $100 gift card and $10 flybuys (which you won’t have access to until after 5pm the next day)

  • All cards disappeared from the shelf as usual

  • can these be added to the flybuys app like you can add woolies gift cards to the rewards app?

    • +4

      No.

The gift card in this deal is a prepaid Mastercard gift card issued by Heritage Bank on behalf of InComm. Strictly speaking, it is not a Coles gift card, because Coles gift cards are issued by Coles Group.

I just double-checked the Flybuys app and I cannot see how you can add any gift cards to the Flybuys app.

  • Just went to a Coles, and all dominations well stacked (looking at you Woolworths)

Only issue will be, will it remain that way until Wednesday …

  • Does this all cover the new packaging for visa cards says "for you" on packaging

    • +2

      No.

The Visa gift cards with For You on the front are actually the new version of the Vanilla Visa gift cards previously sold at Coles. Those two gift card products actually use the same stock barcode, so if you (for example) purchase a $250 For You Visa gift card at Coles, the receipt will say you purchased VANILLA VISA $250 7YR 1 EACH.

Past deals at Coles for Coles Mastercard gift cards have been restricted to only Coles Mastercard gift cards (and did not cover Vanilla Visa gift cards), and there is nothing so far to indicate this deal is any different.

      • The 10% promo applied on vanilla visa when it was on recently but thanks for heads-up. As I can't see the points straightaway at coles, I won't risk it!

      • Hi WookieMonster, do we have to pay these cards separately?

        • No, you don’t have to, but you can if you want to.

Flybuys will award you bonus points on a maximum of 5 gift cards during this promotion, regardless of the number of transactions it takes.

  • No more shopback supermarket gift card, nib grocery gift card or cashrewards groceries gift card available!!!! Look like no double dip anymore.

    • +1

      Yes it's very sad.

    • +3

Apparently the Fast Food gift card on Shopback works at Coles which I plan to test tomorrow.

One potential alternative is to buy a Category Choice Groceries gift card on a site like Giftz using your Coles Mastercard via PayPal. Some health funds get you 3-4% off Category Choice cards (e.g. HCF, Australian Unity). In terms of ShopBack, their Fast Food gift card works at Coles and Woolworths for some reason so that's another option until they correct that mistake.

      Credit to FreePoints.com.au on Facebook

      • @BargainTim did you manage to successfully buy the Coles Mastercard Gift Card using the Shopback Fast Food gift card?

        • -1

@Chatgpttrue I have unfortunately not had a chance yet. But once again FreePoints.com.au admin coming in clutch with this reply on Facebook

I used a ShopBack Fast Food gift card to purchase a Coles Mastercard gift card today without any issues. I've also seen other people successfully use Category Choice Groceries cards to pay for them today. It's odd that you weren't able to. I've never had staff stop me from paying using multiple cards either.

          • @BargainTim: I tried it myself today and it won't work.

It doesn't work because this Coles Mastercard Gift Card deal requires a payment of $105 including the purchase fee. When I tried to pay using "Mixed payment" on the self checkout it prompted an error and I was told by the staff that I cannot do a "mixed payment" when purchasing a gift card.

            • +1

@Chatgpttrue: well it's must be you then as I went and did it this afternoon and paid $5 in cash and $100 with the Shopback Fast Food gift card.

            • +2

@Chatgpttrue: You can't do a split payment on the self checkouts. Go thru a manned checkout or the service desk and tell them you are paying with two cards and the amounts. Don't tell them it is a gift card, the Category Card just acts like a payment card, just tap.

Some staff won't let you do this when there is a gift card being purchased but most do.

              • +1

@wavesgreen: Thanks for the tip @wavesgreen

                • +1

@Chatgpttrue: Thanks for performing the experiment with the ShopBack Fast Food card, this has been new information to me in this thread that it works at Coles.

    • Seems like double dipping is back on the menu @R n b!

  • So one Flybuys account can earn up to 20,000 bonus points?
    $250 x 5 = 10,000 points
    $100 x 5 = 10,000 points

    • +1

No, only 10,000 points per Flybuys account.

In the post description in bold:

      • Limit 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account.
      • BONUS POINTS can be awarded more than once for each Gift Card type including different denominations of the same Gift Card but can only be collected up to 5 times per Flybuys account.
