Just noticed NYT was offering me (a previous subscriber who had cancelled after first subscription sale price had ended) a pretty good deal of only $0.50 for 52 weeks.
New York Times Basic Digital Subscription A$2 Every 4 Weeks ($0.50/Week, up to a Year) @ New York Times

Awesome, I'm only there for the puzzles.
The recipe app is good too if you're not a news person
Hey, that’s the exact same reason for the girly mags!
@cheaponos: Does your wife believe that?
"I'm only subscribed to Playboy for the recipes and crosswords babe, don't worry."
@tenpercent: "I look like I'm staring intently because I can't quite work out this one with staples across the middle."
Hard to believe sane minded people still read this propaganda rag
Meh. There's a lot of quality journalism in the NYT. I agree they generally have an anti trump political leaning and some opinion articles are straight on anti-trump propaganda. But that doesn't mean it's all shite.
Also, always good to read stuff that is not just your everyday rightwing Facebook feed, always listen to what the other side has to say on things, keep your mind open and your critical thinking high. It doesn't mean you'll change my mind, it will mean your opinion will be more informed.Lmao at thinking Facebook allows anything remotely right wing
We've gone so far left people think Facebook comment's are right wing.
Jump on X for a more balanced perspective
Jump on X for a more balanced perspective
Any particular person/organisation on X please? I don't want the X algorithm to dictate the posts I read.
Jump on X for a more balanced perspective
LOL
X doesn't give you a balanced perspective - it only gives you the perspective of the accounts you follow.
@brotherfranciz: It doesn't actually
There's a complex algorithm that pushes content to the top based on several factors
You also have the ability to search topics you have an interest in.
Seems like you just want to be spoon fed factoids
not sure whats wrong with being anti Trump (im still stunned he managed to get voted back in tbh)
I think a balanced, factual information is the best, so it would be good not being anti-anyone in principle, but just look at facts. Si being anti-trump is not a good information, as you hear only one dude if the story.
Some people though think pro-trump information means being balanced and unbiased though, just because it goes in accordance with what they think. Those are obviously scarcely intelligent people.
I've noticed many comments criticizing the New York Times, but without suggesting alternatives. Could you recommend specific news sources you trust?
I'm open to traditional media outlets or specific social media accounts/organizations, as long as you can name them directly.
Please note that simply following recommendations from your social circle or social media feed doesn't count, as this often just reinforces our own biases and creates an echo chamber. I'm looking for sources that provide reliable, well-researched information, even if it sometimes challenges our preconceptions.
there's nothing left to trust. every outlet is pushing a narrative, not the news.
That unfortunately is the problem.
I regularly get into arguments with an ex-journalist who is now teaching journalism at an Australian university who insists it is journalists duty and responsibility to tell the public what is true and right. His (and their) idea of what is true and right. Not put the objective facts.
Journalism has ceased to be about giving us the facts and letting us make up our minds, it has become advocacy. Helping those you agree with favourable coverage, and attacking enemies. They pre-digest the news for us because they think they are more knowledgeable and smarter and wiser than us. The reality is they are simply people who've chosen and graduated from one of the easiest university courses because they've been happy to swallow and regurgitate the ideology they've been taught there.
Journalism has ceased to be about giving us the facts and letting us make up our minds
It hasn't; it never was. It's always been propaganda. What changed is that when there is a breakthrough in information technology, a myriad of alternative voices sprung up, and challenge establishment narratives. The same happened when the circular printing press was invented in the 19th century, which drastically brought down the cost of publishing. That's the age of pamphlets like the Communist Manifesto.
Trust no one; doubt everything.
Seriously, be your own editor; choose and syndicate your own sources from a wide enough variety of viewpoints to compose a 3D picture of the facts.
I’ve got two really close friends that studied journalism and worked at SMH and Network 10.
The stories they tell me that got swept under the carpet because of phone calls from higher ups etc has made me never trust mainstream media. To no surprise they both quit the profession because it’s nothing but sucking up to bosses.
I just clicked the link while on holiday in India, and it's showing up as INR 600 (around 11-12 AUD). Looks like a sweet deal! I'm sure anyone can snag this price using a VPN.
Wow, I can confirm it does show 600 INR using a VPN. Too bad I've already subscribed !
Does it take an Australian card for payment?I had a quick check, but I think it wants you to use an Indian credit card - you can't use PayPal as far as I can see…
Any tips?
The final straw of mine with NYT was their coverage of some of the Israel/Palestine conflict. Multiple occasions where they have ignored the rules regarding sourcing, made accusations and then once it turned out the accusations were about the opposite side they didn't provide correct, acknowledgment and re-writing the article with the same vigour about the opposite side.
I'm purposely leaving out which side is which - because it's proof that it isn't about which side you believe - it's about providing the facts, or at least it should be and how organisations try to frame themselves.
Yeah i would not subscribe even if they paid me. One of the most warmongering zionist shilling newspaper around. Rather stick to independent journalism. Avoid nyt propaganda
Again like someone mentioned earlier, what are good alternatives?
you get your news on X for free and its much more truthful, you do need to follow a few trusted sources and it takes a while to get it but once you do you will be equipped to see the facts and wont fall for any BS narrative
a few trusted sources
Can you please share yours please?
@chicguy: Trust no one; doubt everything.
Seriously, be your own editor; choose and syndicate your own sources from a wide enough variety of viewpoints to compose a 3D picture of the facts.
@Eeples: That's not what I said , what is your interest first ?
Is it war in Ukraine ?
Then you find a few sources that deal with that like maps and etc.
Over time you will find out who talks BS and who doesn't , unfortunately takes time but you do realise that msn talks shit and gives you their own agenda .
Then you do the same for other topics as no 2 sources are the same
Pulls stories on the same topic from multiple sources and then shows you how that source is seen to lean overall so you can read each story but with the context of what bias it may have - then read story on same topic from the other side. The truth often lies somewhere between the two
independent journalism
care to share yours please?
I use a few knowing its limitations:
The intercept- a little left leaning
Glen Greenwald- a little liberal
The New Daily- Australia stuff, owned by industry super funds
I also use X for raw news to make up my own mind on what I think. I tend to follow journalists from all sides (left-centre- right)
Mainstream media is dying, only thing keeping it up is boomers (my parents included, they’re glued to Sky News) and corporates buying old school press for things like hotel lobbies, planes etc
Glen Greenwald- a little liberal
He isn't. He's a free speech absolutist, i.e. left libertarian. Before becoming a journo, as a lawyer, he'd defend neonazis' right to protest. Pro bono! And he's Jewish!!
He's a free speech absolutist
Funny his criticisms are only aimed at the left. Never a word against Russia or China. Quite happy rubbing shoulders with tucker carlson. Hardly a liberal.
@BlueJay87: That's bc he's a dissident leftist, as all left libertarians are. But if you don't look into what criticisms he's making, and how they differ from right wing criticisms of the left, you'd sure mistake him for a right winger. He doesn't criticise the left for being "communist" or for being "Marxist"; he criticises it for being warmongery and authoritarian, i.e. for not being leftist enough. All dissident leftist journos — Max Blumenthal, Anya Parampil, Aaron Maté, Chris Hedges, Abby Martin, Richard Medhurst… — do the same. You can hardly mistake them for Alex Jones or Paul Joseph Watson. Tucker Carlson is another matter entirely, bc he too is a dissident, and most often criticises the right wing for not being conservative enough.
Michael West.
Yep, Michael's a rare gem amongst rags like NYT and all mainstream.
@bigbadaboom: He’s considered an anti semite because he critiques Benji…
He’s a top bloke if you ask me
still too much for the BS they give you
Isn't it already too much of Americanism in Australia by now?
Thanks bluejay, I'll try not to let my subscription lapse again… copped a $70 fee last time
$70 fee? An actual fee? Or just a higher price?
after a similar deal I forgot to cancel and they charged me full sub price heh
Haha damn. I just set myself a reminder
For those replying to the “if not this then what” when people pointing out bias
Here’s an option
Pulls stories on the same topic from multiple sources and then shows you how that source is seen to lean overall so you can read each story but with the context of what bias it may have - then read story on same topic from the other side. The truth often lies somewhere between the two
The truth often lies somewhere between the two
Imo there is no truth only perspective.
Or FREE access to this and many overseas newspapers and magazines via PressReader using your library card. A VPN will even allow you to access your local newspapers.
The Israel Times
Regime Propaganda should always be free. Who is moronic enough to pay for this utter garbage?
The attentive around basic versus all access subscriptions. I just re-subscribed and got the $20 a year for all access. That’s a great deal!
Wouldn't pay for propaganda, let all legacy media fall, they've failed the people.
I’ve had this for a few years now (since DT 1.0) and every time it comes up with the original price returning, you go through cancel motion in the app and to stop you from canceling it will continue to offer you the same $2 per month deal for another year. Assume for international subscribers you should get that price forever. Good deal IMO
Real Investigative Journalists are killed or left to rot in Jail, just ask Julian Assange…they are not given jobs by the MSM, they have to create their own source of income which is why X had potential as a public square for all voices. As anyone in the free energy invention sphere knows the truth cannot be sold for profit it must be given away for free if the public is to ever see it manifest but in Social media/News the waters have been muddied further with AI Bots have taking control the narrative on all public spaces now. People have no idea who they are arguing with even on voice chat the bots are running the show. Verified accounts mean absolutely nothing now, your account will be targeted and stolen with Zero recourse to get it back and with Quantum Computing there is no safe password. The "Intelligence" community have proven they cannot be trusted, they are the propaganda arm of Globalists. Turn them ALL OFF. Trust your gut, that is about all we have left.
Just signed up for the $20/year detail (for Athletic coverage). Cancelled right away (through NYTimes account). Have access to sub til Dec 25th 2025
this is what I did last time! Annoyed I didn't find the link for the $20/year coverage this time. Now I have to keep subscription active until I cancel
