did not hear good things about mahindra

They ended up going to Chery.

Lol. Out of the fire into the frying pan.

      • +94

So a dealership that did not currently sell Mahindra, but did sell Chery, said to buy a Chery? What a shocker.

I would also note that Mahindra is Indian, not Chinese.

        • +8

OP didn't suggest Mahindra was Chinese. The Chery dealership told him about Mahindra.

          I wouldn't buy either.

          • +2

@bboz: You can get away with buying an EV from these co.s, which are generally inherently more reliable, but maybe not a ICE vehicle, too many movie parts/potential issues to worry about

            • @Jackson: I definately think EV's from X car company are less problematic, as stated above, but I was after an ICE vehicle.
The problem people will face, is the length of time you have to wait to be able to buy a favored Jap or other imported car that has long wait times.
I am talking 6 months or more.
I could not wait that long, and also the amount in $$ was $10 K or more for a similar vehicle.
I do think cars have a very inflated value and once brand X vehicles are everwhere, will the market change.

Australia has always paid more for vehicles compared to the rest of the world. Our LCT doesn't help, but we're a smaller market so we pay a premium for them.

Since covid prices went crazy, but reality is coming back.

          • @bboz: He says 'I went chinese car-hunting recently' so not sure if OP knew it wasn't Chinese

    • +98

      Lol no

      it's a 79 year old company

      And actually makes decent 4wds.

      • +5

        decent 4wds.

Can vouch. Drove a mates the other day and was surprised.

    • +13

Well, they have been here in Australia since 2007 - https://www.whichcar.com.au/features/mahindra-s-big-ambition…

      • +8

I'm pretty sure Mahindra briefly sold the Stockman and Bushranger 4WDs here in the early 90s.

In any case, they only sold 50 vehicles here in 2007.

        • +2

My uncle had a Stockman. It had a PTO lol

He talks about that car more than his early 80s Porsche 911 so it obviously did something right.

    • never heard of them either but when i looked up wikipedia; they seem to be a pretty big company with lots of holdings. For instance they hold 51% of peugeot and 76% of pinafarina

    • @chadleyshe - They're also been in Australia for over 10 years lmao.

This was the same price 6 months back when they brought the Black edition :)

Fuel Efficiency 8.3 L/100KM plus no ANCAP rating.
    Not great

    • +1

      Yeah not good

      Solid car though

      • +9

why isn't the Mahindra's getting an ANCAP certification?

      • +2

To be fair, 8.3 L/100KM is not bad for a seven seat, petrol engined SUV. And it uses the cheaper 91 RON Unleaded fuel.

I'm not aware of any that are much better. You have to go either diesel or hybrid if you want much better fuel economy, but then you will be paying much more for the car up front.

    • +35

Indian car, probably why no ANCAP rating.
They're built like tractor though, based off my past experience.
Lots of vibrations, noisy cabin, noisy diesel engines, very hard ride quality from stiff suspension (due to sh*t Indian roads I presume). But they last a long long time. Reliable, unlike the Jeeps. And some other peeps.

      • +2

is it difficult for Indian cars to get an ANCAP rating ?

        • +14

If the governing body would have been in india they would have even get ANCAP ultra plus rating in no time.

        • +7

It has a 'Global' NCAP rating, but that appears to be using a lower standard of testing to our ANCAP/EuroNCAP as it says two airbags and five stars but with the recent ANCAP/EuroNCAP standard, you'd need more airbags as they require curtain airbags throughout the car to get a five stars.

It probably hasn't gone to the effort to get the ANCAP or EuroNCAP as they only really have a small presence in both markets.

I think part of the issue coming up is there are multitudes of newish brands coming into the Australian market and not all will survive and since Mahindra was already a minor player, there is always a fear you could be left holding the bag if they decided to exit.

This is going to be an issue for the next couple of years as I dont see all the Chinese marks surviving .

          • @Pcoder: They have been in Australia for 18 years?

      • +7

Built like a tractor because they've been making tractors for decades.

I've read their cars are very reliable, just a shame about the fuel economy.

      • +6

I do agree that most of the Mahindra cars are useless after couple of years with vibration and noisy cabin. Quality is not that much great.

      • +4

Well, I use XUV700 for almost 1.5 year and I have no issues with vibration or noisy cabin or suspension..! So do the test drive as this model is made to very high standard and provide great comfort while driving.

        • +1

I have this from last 2 years and no issues of noiseand vibrations.

Never faced the issues what people are referring to avoid these. Infact i am pretty happy with its excellent value for money

        • hows the fuel economy?

          • @cloudy: Honestly not great in city (8.5km - 9km per ltr) but on motorway it's excellent (14km per ltr). You can increase city driving mileage by using Cruze control, as I noticed whenever I used Cruze control it gives way more average then driving without Cruze control.

However, it is powerful compared to Mitsubishi or Nissan as I test drive both before buying.

So it's about your budget, power you want and mileage you are after.

        • The reason why they are unrated is more to do with bureaucracy then never being tested.

Most of the time the unrated cars are due to it's testing being more than five years old and some changes that were made to the scoring since then. So they have decided to unrate cars now even though they may be perfectly safe.

        • +3

Oh the R card again. Chill it's just a car company and has only just started making half decent cars.

rAcIsM! lol… India literally has some of the worst roads in the world. But sure, everyone who disagrees is Hitler right?

          https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/021/818/hit…

      • So, are you talking about all indian cars, all Mahindras, or just this model? Just curious.

      • Yeah sure. Roads in India aren't great but these days roads here in Sydney or even Melbourne aren't that great. Road near me is full of pot holes and for months hasn't fixed still. So we need such cars here too..lol

    • +8

From what I know they have 5* NCAP rating but ANCAP will not rate them due to no ADAS.. other than that they have all the safety features required for a 5* rating.

      https://www.globalncap.org/news/mahindra-xuv700

These things are also apparently as reliable as a toyota.. there are Aussie reviews on Youtube that boast about these.

      • +22

This. It’s why ANCAP is so terrible. They promote systems that actively distract the driver as well as those which are effective. They do not apply empirical evidence to verify safety, just a tick box if the car had it.

Mitsubishi recently scaled back their driver attention in the Pajero Sport as it was chronically distracting. ANCAP made zero mention of this.

        • +2

I recently drove a new Triton and the driver monitoring was infuriating. Baffles me that they could test that thing and say it was ready for production. Good to hear they're changing it.

    • +11

Rolls Royce don't have ANCAP ratings on their cars and their fuel efficiency is abysmal.

Does that make this a better car?

      • +1

That's cause the people who buy them have a convoy around them and can afford the fuel

    • Yeah the running costs for this are quite high. I'm not sure I see the appeal.

    • +2

Yikes that's 0.3L/100km worse than my 1050kg Japanese car that only carries 2 people

      • +3

tbf this is a big family suv that is 1,8 ton empty

and so you need a turbo 2.0 to push it

tbh i dont know why a fwd suv is 1.8 ton!

        bad engineering imo

      • 1050kg Japanese car

        Miat?

ANCAP RATING WHY DO YOU NEED? WHEN YOU HAVE GLOBAL NCAP RATING 5 STAR ALREADY?

THIS ANCAP RATING BASICALLY MORE MONEY MAKING BUSINESS FOR AUSTRALIA GOVERNMENT.

      • Different countries have different requirement and environmental conditions.
For example, you would rarely drive in snow and ice in Australia but you might drive in extreme heat and dust. You might have frontal collision with wildlife in Australia etc. Also different countries place different value on occupant's safety.
        Different countries, different conditions.

        • Lol then Australian car will have zero star in Indian road. Car would be dead before warranty expires.

          • @Zonty: That seems like a pretty childish response to: 'different countries have different conditions'
Anyway, it is up to the Indian government to set the standards and requirements that suit them

            • @King Tightarse: Exactly now you saying right. Each government set own standards. My first comment was why do you need ANCAP rating? When you have global NCAP rating. Global means it should be globally safe.

              • +1

@Zonty: I said the exact same thing each time: Different countries have different requirements and conditions
In some countries life is 'cheap' and occupant's safety is less important than a lower price, in others it is more valued and safety standards are higher. Environmental conditions are also different in many countries.
IE Ice and snow in Canada would require more sophisticated sliding and skidding solutions than hot and dry conditions in Australia.
Every country is different and the government can apply any standards (or no standards) as they see fit.
Global rating is a basic 'ballpark' standard.

                • -2

@King Tightarse: Most of those standards are built by corporate world which help government to win election.

    • Dumb and naive way to assess a car.

A comment without a comma is like a car without brakes—it just keeps going. Is there something you are hinting at?

      • +2

A mate has one of these (which is) 18 months old. I was amazed how well built (it was/is). His is going/His goes really well (that is) nice to drive. My only thought was the suspension, which was very firm for my liking, but I /(would) live that with easy for the value.
        You are happy now?

Spend $3k more and get the Haval H6 Hybrid instead, will easily save enough in fuel compared to this very thirsty car

    • -1

what is real Fuel Efficiency of Haval H6 Hybrid

    • +12

The H6 is a surprisingly good car but it's also only a 5 seater, no good if you need the child/amputee seats in the third row of the Mahindra.

    • +2

      Well said!!!👍

    • +3

30 major brands including GWM H6 crash tests.
