If you think this thing is lasting 20 years you really are a Dreamer.

          • @Captain Yobbo: Why not ? as long as you keep it garaged and mostly start and stop or drove in a while, just like Peeegio car, always nice to look at but hardly drive-able.

            • +2

@dlovep: I don't think the intention is to treat this like a collectable.

              • @Captain Yobbo: Yeah, no one will buy a car to garage unless we're all from Brunei or have a Sultan brother, but the point is valid, it can last 20 years… LOL

            • @dlovep: i mean whether you support these things or not, it’s completely moronic to suggest a car will last 20-30 years when you have no product history to go by.

          • +1

@Captain Yobbo: maybe they meant it will last as a 20 year old paperweight

          • @Captain Yobbo: Euro cars have entered the chat.
            And this is from experience.

            • @Drakesy: Oh no, how dare someone question the reliability & overall build quality of a budget Chinese SUV?!!

        • -1

30 years in this shitbox and I’m for the first time in my life contemplating on my early exit from this world.

        • +20

Sorry but Toyota's are now for the rich. $24k used to get you a mid spec brand new Corolla but unfortunately in 2025, $24k will get you a slightly used 2005 Corolla with 250,000km.

          • +2

@Dollar Dreamer: so $24k still gets you exactly the same car?

Eg new 2005 Corolla was new $24k
now in 2025, same 2005 Corolla is $24k?

          • +9

            @Dollar Dreamer:

            2005 Corolla with 250,000km

            would be around $4-5k actually

          • -7

            @Dollar Dreamer: Albo's Australia

            • +2

@Gdsamp: Created by scummos trillion in debt for nuthin

          • -1

            @Dollar Dreamer:

            $24k used to get you…

The first mass produced cars cost $200. You've just discovered what inflation is.

        • +1

Not all of us can afford Porsche's

        • +9

For 24k even plenty of used cars can suddenly be torture. I'd roll the dice on the MG. I see them everywhere on the road and they look fine to me.

        • Why are you even here in the thread?

        • I wouldn't buy one but the interior can't be worse than a toyota.. the cheapo chinese cars usually comes with all the bells and whistles

        • Went from a 6.2L Redline in to a MG Excite which i've had 5 years. Super happy with it and have zero regrets.

Also have a Prado but hardly drive it, always choose the MG.

          • -2

@LowRange: Yikes idk what your thinking 🤔

            • @mustang87401: The Redline was around 12L/100km, you could only really give it a short squirt when merging on to the freeway. It was black and the dust was annoying and guaranteed every time i detailed it it would rain, there was a running joke i could break droughts by washing it.

The MG has better tech, and its nice having a car i'm not worried about getting hit with a trolley at the shops.

      • +2

10 years of pain going through MG warranty, service & repair? Not the best way to plan your next 10 years.

        • +1

I've heard you have to wait on parts delivered from China rather then them having a facility nearby that stores parts. This seems annoying.

      • So it costs you $2.5k a year tops. That's better than the depreciation on most other cars. These things are like kmart toasters, but with a warranty. Use it 10 years and bin it for the next one. No repair costs in that time. Its a great business model and compelling for many.

    • +4

Or sell it. MG will just be another car brand to kids getting their licenses over the next five years. Someone will pay something for it if it still drives.

    • +3

Traded one last month for 12.5k ish (2023 about 16 months old and lost a fortune on it). Two warranty fixes in months and sent it off with many more gremlins. Terrible quality cars (not saying all Chinese as the Haval is so much nicer for similar price points). Be lucky to survive 5 years with it.

      • -1

That’s crazy wow, exactly what I meant earlier I think I wasn’t too far off with saying five years and you can get scrap value, looking at your experience.

  • +1

Oh wow they are already in the phase of jacking up prices, I knew they were making good headway but I didn't realise it was that level.

    • +3

Nearly purchased an MG 3 Excite top of the line 9 months ago for my mum for $19,950, now they are $26k, WTF

      • +2

Yeah I knew they were gonna jack the prices up after establishing themselves, I did not think if was gonna be this aggressive and this soon. Aussie’s love their cheap throwaways I guess.

  • +1

    Are cars disposable now too?

  • but… but…. the resale value???

    • +15

I do love those that are all about that resale value.

And then they go and drive an Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

I was once one of those people, now i drive a Chinesemobile and spend the money i've saved on KFC.
Translates to a lot of zinger burgers

      • +9

Mercedes or Great Wall, it doesn’t matter if you care about resale value you wouldn’t be buying a brand new car.

        • it doesn’t matter if you care about resale value you wouldn’t be buying a brand new car.

Yeah I never understood the obsession with new cars. After you've driven it a month it is indistinguishable from a 1 or 2 year old car that is 70-80% the cost. It does all the same stuff but costs much less. Some people pay a lot of money just to drive a new car for a month.

      • +2

Many people never reach this level of enlightenment.

      • 2 forms of self abuse.

        • Some people are just masochists.

      • I was once one of those people, now i drive a Chinesemobile and spend the money i've saved on KFC.

Could you show us your maths?

Because I did some sums and a $20k Chinese shitbox that you sell for $5k in 10 years gives you a lot less Zinger burgers than a $20k used Toyota that you sell for $10k in 10 years.

Happy to be enlightened, but I'll need more than 'trust me bro'. Do you have real word numbers?

FWIW, I'd happily buy a disposable Chinese shitbox if it is indeed more cost-effective. But the numbers I'm seeing aren't showing that.

        • +1

And then they go and drive an Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

Not sure where i said Toyota.

And any used car is going to have a lower proportional depreciation value as compared to a new one…

          • -2

            @Drakesy:

Not sure where i said Toyota.

Never said you did, I just used that as one example.

And any used car is going to have a lower proportional depreciation value as compared to a new one…

Sure, but you said you bought a Chinesemobile to save money for more Zinger burgers. I'm just wondering why you chose that over something that might have better TCO so you can enjoy more Zingers?
My next car will likely be a used Toyota for this reason. A few-years-old Toyota seems to have the lowest depreciation of any daily driver car, so if Zingers are your thing, old Toyotas are you best way to get as many of them as you can.

            • +2

@1st-Amendment: The Chinesemobile was far better equipped than a Toyota for the same price (2019 4wd vs 2012 Toyota out of warranty)

              Heated & cooled seats
              Panoramic sunroof
              diff locker stock
              360 camera
              massaging seats
a digital drivers display & Audio that doesn't suck
              motorised tailgate
              The list goes on.

1 year later and i can sell it for $2k less than what i bought it for.
Whereas if i bought a prado i'd have burnt around $4k by now.

              • @Drakesy:

                The list goes on.

You missed the two most important things. Long term reliability and resale value. Gimmicky features don't hold value, just look at laptops and mobile phones for how that works. Long term reliability does, hence why Toyota can sell a vanilla product and have it hold value long term.

1 year later and i can sell it for $2k less than what i bought it for.

Lol… let's see some proof of this. Advertised price is not sale price, in case you're unaware of this. Show me some auction results where you're selling your Chinesemobile for $2k less than what you paid for it.

Even the dealers can't sell them for last year's price which is why we see these price cuts EVERY WEEK in here. If the new prices are dropping then it's impossible for resale not to also drop. But I'm happy to see some auction data that says otherwise. I want to maximise my Zinger purchasing power too.

  • +17

Just drove this as rental for 5 days during Gold Coast visit.
    Would never want this again.

Please have thorough test drive if you’re serious about purchasing this. My 2c though.

    • +8

Out of interest, what car do you drive normally that you're comparing it to?

      • +7

I drove one last year in Tasmania and thing that was noticeable to me was how slow it was to respond from idle. You'd hit the accelerator from a red light and it'd take a second or so for the engine to react. It was really weird.

        • +3

I hired one too in Sydney. Acceleration was terrible and off the line.

Know someone who works at a dealer. Issue is widespread

        • I had this experience with a rental too. Strangest driving experience ever

      • +4

Sorry. Just saw your and others messages.

I drive Palisade but my comparison isn’t based on that. This lacks acceleration. As in literally. Cruise control, mostly need hands off to engage. Rear camera is a joke. Better be careful or else will hit objects by miles. Contained view. At 110 speed, it was shaking like a toy. And many more.

That’s I said pls have thorough test drive at full speed before purchasing.

        • +1

Got one of these as a hire car last week through work and had exactly the same experience. Its not so much the lack of acceleration its the connection it had to your throttle input. I had to drive it 4hrs into rural WA and i literally had to put the pedal to the floor for it to kick back a gear when overtaking. Had to drive back into the left lane numerous times at overtaking zones to let cars go because i could not speed up enough to overtake a slow moving truck.

Wasn't any better in the city where your foot needed to be close to half way down the throttle travel for it to start accelerating.

For reference i drive a beat up 2006 civic with 250ks on the clock and would take that any day over this. Have had other smaller cars such as the Kia Picanto as hire cars and those drove great.

So as stated go do a proper test drive before purchasing.

      • -2

Anything but MG. Literally everything else drives better.

        • Build your dreams? Haval? Great Wall Motors? I count them all the same

    • +1

      what issues did you have?

    • This comment is really helpful actually. There does seem to be a lot of hate for these Chinese cars, probably for good reason - but to have actually experienced it for yourself gives some legitimacy to your comment. What was it that you didnt like?

I had similar experience with a Ford Puma. Great looking cars but the performance was the worst I've ever driven.

      • Isn't the Ford Puma a 1litre 3cylinder car? I'm not sure you can use Ford Puma and performance in the same sentence.

      • -8

Correction: China cars. Chinese != China

        • -1

yeah no one cares, take your china hate to the next china visa deal please

    • +1

I got offered one as a replacement whilst my current replacement(hybrid Corolla) went in for a recall and I jokingly told them I’d take my chances with the dodgy brakes(they laughed and gave me a non hybrid corolla so I’m a happy fella)

    • -1

Ppl have a lot of negative things to say about the car but don't specify what exactly is bad/poor?

      • +6

We got an mg zst core (cvt na engine around 84kw from memory) in sept 2023 and a haval h6 lux aug 2023 although the haval is slightly bigger family also has a jolion and an mg hs too.

The mg had steering replaced under warranty and there was something else I can’t remember (partners car). Her brother with the HS went in for electrics that kept setting alarm off and flattening battery.

Infotainment in the MG is terrible like an ancient android tablet. Often radio would just go silent and not work especially in heat. The quality of the cameras and software even compared to Haval is night and day difference. As is the quality of their I pilot, intelligent cruise and dash interface. I drove the h6 and avoided driving the mg as much as possible.

The car was terribly sluggish especially with the air conditioner on coming near cutting out at times as you enter roundabouts and need to give it some. And then near the end of its time with us tried to accelerate into traffic multiple times to point partner didn’t want to drive it anymore so just wore the cost and rid it for less than half the cost rather than dealing with the dealer trying to chase gremlins forever.

Size for size I’d take a jolion over the mg any day.

    • -4

Why people downvote sound advice amazes me.

    • +1

It’s the true epitomy of shitbox

    • +3

Drive an MG ZS in Adelaide for a week recently and completely agree. Definitely feels like you're driving a cheap car in every way, guess you get what you pay for

  • +9

Rubbish cars, we bought a ZS and sold it within 3 months.

    • +6

did you skip the test drive or something?

      • +7

Test drives tell you maybe 5% of the story,

        • +1

pretty sure most people would know if they liked the car or not unless they only test drove one car

          • +1

@Poor Ass: Trouble with test drives is that most dealers are in areas where speeds are limited. So you don't really get a chance to test the car.

When I lived in Vic, I got to test drive a BMW for the weekend, and that's why I ended up with one (and then another). Probably would never have justified it otherwise. Fast forward 30 years and struggle to get a test drive without the dealer tagging along and back seat driving.

        • +2

maybe if you have no idea what to look for..

          • @Gavman: What is there to look for mate it’s a brand new car?

      • +5

Yeh we did, it was on around the dealer. Once we got it home and went up a few hill it would lag like hell especially with the aircon on. MG told us turn the aircon off up the hill.

Sometime randomly lag around a round about or on freeway, apparently all normal. The panels were extremely thin, so when your washing it they bent in.

It looked nice from outside, and they had runout prices. Plus the 10 year warranty won us over.

Bought it for 21k sold it for 20k, longer I kept it the lower the price would drop. The resale value is horrible. Never buying a Chinese car again.

    • Why is that? I'm actually interested… Like to buy a shitbox like this and then it be so shitty that you want to sell it 3 months later, it certainly raises some questions. What did you replace it with for starters?

    • +3

ZS is quite different to ZST

      • +1

Exactly, even the ZST 1.5L NA engine is different to the 1.3L Turbo. The latter is actually a great engine, plenty of power for the vehicle.

        • Yep, can certainly verify that. Was very surprised with the power of that tiny engine.

  • +8

Look like MG is better than Nissan, my nissan pathfinder 2013 has CVT issue nissan service department want to charge me $16,000 to replace. LOL

    • You have a 12 year old car which may or may not have been perfectly maintained and you want to pin that on Nissan??? You might as well buy a Toyota then as that might be the only brand which will work with your logic.

      • +2

Nah dude, has a point, Nissan's are pretty shit.. Most mechanics will tell u not to touch one with 10ft pole

        • I don't know about a Pathfinder but all the 350Zs and S15 and Skylines have been solid. I even track them heavily and have zero issues.

      • +5

Nissan CVT's are notorious for failure at around that age.
