  • good deal. Tempting but but the CPU.
Other options also eligible for 20% off but this is probably the best deal.

      HP OMEN

      It is a Beast.

    • -1

      It's an ill omen

    • It is the best deal for the cheapest if you want a RTX 4080 or a RTX 4090 for laptops. Which is why I went for it.

  • +9

there's a 16.1 inch option available too. $100 more expensive but I think a 17.3" laptop would be too big to backpack with.

    • +1

Agreed, I have the laptop and it is a tight fit for my bag. North Face bag, keep in mind its not a small bag either. Doable, but I recommend people to look into whether you can carry it or not.

      • @Zaku Batman just to confirm, you have the 17" model?

        • Yes, I do. What do u need to know?

          • @Zaku Batman: I was just checking, i ordered the 16" HP Omen to travel with long term. 16" weighs 2.35kg.
for comparison MacBook pro 16" is only 210g lighter. I figure if the 16" HP Omen ends up being too heavy then the 16" MacBook Pro would have been overkill too. At that point I would probably end up switching to a MacBook Air 15".

I'm gonna run some power tests to see just how much power it uses, I'm thinking I may be able to get by with a 240W Slimq charger instead of 330w. This 16" model actually comes with a 280W. I would use the SlimQ to charge other devices too.

Do you know if you can charge your Omen with a 65W power bank over USB C? not expecting major charge but if it adds an extra 1-2 hours of battery life it could be good.

            • +3

@Aetheriance: You cannot charge the PC with a power bank due to simply how a gaming laptop is. It needs a lot of power to be fed through it, to function. You can think of it as a portable desktop PC, complete with required peripherals.

That being the case you need to take into account bringing the power brick/charger with you since it will barely last 1-2 hours under load. So extra weight you need to take into account for. I don't mind, since I was one of those stereotypical kids who carried a ton of books and walk to school, I am used to it.

Only buy this if you are willing to carry extra weight and willing to find somewhere to plug while you perform tasks. Plus, if you would also like to play games from time to time. But from what it looks like, you prioritize streamlining and less weight. If so, I suggest you skip this. Despite how much I want to recommend more people of this laptop due to how well it treated me so far.

I think most of the 2025 models are coming out in March-May. There should be some nice discounts from Lenovo and Dell soon too.

  • It's an OMEN as to what's coming soon….

Do we have enough votes for a 5090 lappie? ;)

  • This or mini PC?
Thinking to buy a mini PC that is on all the time AND desktop priced around $1300 or
OR should I buy this and use as main machine & turn on all the time?

    • -1

How far are you willing to go to make the mini pc portable?

      • Don't need to be portable.
I wish if I can get some discount on this laptop by removing monitor, I would love it.

        • Should I buy a desktop? lol

Why am I looking at laptop when I don't need portability? Well this is cheap though.

          • @SWill: Thermals really.

If you don't need portability don't get a laptop.

I'm tempted by this myself - my old laptop with a 1060 in it is definitely nearing its age.

          • +2

@SWill: I hope you realise that the mobile version of the rtx4080 that is in notebooks is similar to a desktop rtx4070 (non-super). It's not much of a bargain if you don't care about the mobility and the inbuilt monitor. Plus this laptop is probably frustratingly loud and hot while running under load.

          • @SWill: If you do not mind how noisy the fan is like I do (I had lived next to a noisy street for most of my life). So small things like this is of little to no consequence. But I do agree if you don't plan on moving around a lot (I do). Then go for a desktop. Better everything aside from portability. But if you do plan to get the laptop, I can vouch for it. It has served me well so far. But I do recommend getting a good cooler like the GT500 or the GT600.

  • Hoping this and the 16" one have a second NVME M.2 Slot.

    • The 17.3" should.

      • This one definitely does. The supplied nvme comes in the gen 4 slot. There's a spare gen 3 slot.

  • +1

Got the 4090 version of this laptop. It's great value!

    • Any issues with the intel i7-13700HX processor ? read online reports about this laptop throttling due to overheating, and needing a really good laptop cooler to keep the heat down.

      • Mine came with the 13900HX. I have an IETS GT600 which works great. GPU is cool but CPU gets very hot. I want to do a repasting because I have pushed it a lot.

        • Hmm considering….. a laptop cooler, eg the IETS GT600 (1.3Kg) adds more weight to carry around.

        • I have the RTX 4080 version of this laptop with i7-13700HX, I also had the GT500 and GT600, and for some odd reason the GT500 performs better than the GT600 model. The coolers, managed to decrease the thermals in my games an average of 15* degrees less.

      • The 13700HX typically boosts to 4.8Ghz when gaming. Occasionally I see 5Ghz briefly. I bought a Thermaltake A21 Aluminium active cooling pad and it only knocks 1 or 2 degrees off the maximum temperature when gaming,

    • I’ve also go the 4090 version but started running into issues lately when running off a secondary monitor when playing Kingdom Come 2. Laptop freezes and requires hard reboot only to do it again. Tried different cables etc but no joy

      • Maybe you have been running into thermal issues? Since you have a dual screen setup, what do you usually have running in the other monitor or background? That may be the problem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyOntt8uZ7M shows teardown, 16" model has 2 NVME slots.

  • +1

Man I was waiting to buy this but went with a Micro ATX build instead because the price never got this low.

  • +2

I bought exactly this model last time it went on sale for similar price. The primary nvme slot is gen 4, it also definitely has a spare nvme gen 3 slot. I upgraded to 96GB memory, no issues at all. 240hz gsync screen is very nice. Max temp when running games on ultra is around 85 degrees. I run on "balanced" mode, not max performace, and it consumes around 150W total when gaming.

    • I'm not sure it has a G-Sync screen

    • Thank you for the info! Can you tell me if the keyboard keys are coloured permanently or if it’s rgb led? I mean the wsad is yellow in the photos. I’d really like to be able to turn them to all to just white.

      • +1

You can change them via the Omen Hub software. Not every key individually, but sections of the keyboard at a time. I have mine set to mirror what is shown on the screen, e.g. if the left side of my screen is mainly red, then the left half of my keyboard turns red. It's pretty good while gaming, adds to the immersion.

    • I have this current model, do you have any recommendations on what ram to buy? I also checked last time that the ram limit was 64gb, but might be wrong.

      • The chipset can handle up to 128GB but HP only officially supports up to 64GB. There are many reports of people installing more than 64GB on Reddit, so I decided to give it a try. I used this kit: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C79K5VGZ Be warned that when you first boot up afterwards it has to "train" the memory and it takes up to 10 minutes for that first boot - don't panic. After that it reports 96GB correctly everywhere and works flawlessly.

        • Thank you, I will give it a try once I find the chance then when these things ever go on sale lol.

Is this way overkill for a work laptop? I don’t game just Microsoft office work

    • +2

Overkill for a work laptop but hey maybe you'll get a taste for gaming?

      • Any recommendations for a less overkill one?

    • +2

Can never have enough CPU and Memory for those Excel spreadsheets (no seriously I notice night and day the responsivness using a specced up device compared to our run of the mill office laptops.

    • +1

Yes, it is overkill but if it's within your budget, then why not. The only thing that may be an issue is the 17" size if you have to carry it around in a hybrid workplace.

I have a 17" Razer Blade that I bought for my post-grad university studies (lol) and it's fine for that, but if it was going to be a work laptop and I had to carry it around with me, then I would definitely go with a smaller laptop.

      • Agreed with the size, if you think of getting the 17.3 model, you need to have a bag that can carry that massive thing. Mine barely manages to fit into my north face bag. But I still manage to take it everywhere currently in my university life.

    • +3

      Yes.

CPU and memory are overkill for office tasks, 1tb might also be overkill. However, those are not a bad things to have for the future.

4080 is waste of money for word and excel. It also drains battery quickly so you may just turn it off anyway.

It's big and heavy. If you are desk bound that weight is fine but then if you are desk bound portability may not matter and . Deskbound you would have a proper monitors so the big screen size on the laptop isn't a big asset. You could probably get by with a $400-500 mini-pc.

People who game, video work, science etc would be happy with this price. It's a great price of you need a 4080.

      • Any recommendations for a less stressful overkill?

        • Consider Thinkpad T series for a reliable workhorse (but graphics will be weak). Latest T14 is supposed to be more repairable.

        • Thinkbook is good. It depends on whether it is during at a desk all day or wether you move around with it. Are you using monitors? Do you take it home or to clients? How much battery life do you need? etc

      • Definitely, battery life will be poor and laptop will be heavy. I haven't used myself but this seems like a good spec less overkill alternative. Retains the memory and storage.

    • Not really overkill if you work with either 3d model renders or other more taxing stuff. But otherwise if you just plan to use excel. I recommend you look somewhere else.

RTX 5 Series laptops are just around the corner. their AI based frame gen tech will be great for laptop gaming and the new chips are power efficient as well. Hold off for a month or so and go for latest tech.

    • +6

RTX 5070ti has less CUDA and raw compute than a 4080. The price of that starts at like 1900 USD from memory. any RTX 5080 laptop on release is going to be minimum 3500 AUD. That is why i pounced on this. Gaming isn't my only focus though, wanting to render videos.

      • if you want to render, macbook pro on m chips is awesome. because there's no performance degradation on battery, and it lasts much longer than any intel counterpart..

        • +2

I was looking at that, but you also have to pay significantly more money. I was looking at 16" MacBook Pro's.

          • +1

@Aetheriance: I recently got a refurb m1 pro MBP 16 for $1700 on eBay sales. solid machine, as new, is my full time editing/rendering portable rig.

I used to be intel guy, but hey it's no contest unfortunately until ARM and windows play nicely..

            • @shabaka: @shabaka I believe using the 4080 GPU for rendering should outperform all but M4 max in rendering. I don't disagree MacBook's good devices. I think for me it would also be an issue switching over to MacOS and then you have to buy parallels, windows license etc to run Windows, it adds up. Plus no native Linux support.

Windows based laptop has more overall options depending on which path you want to go down.

edit, i wonder what the 4080 mobile is like for running local AI Vs MacBook. I was looking at MBP for local AI but there are RAM limitations.

              • +1

@Aetheriance: yes, but you get same processing power on both battery and charger, and lasts much longer. so depends on what you value most. I often have to do things on the go, and macs just stellar at this. yeah some things I could do faster on a machine like this one, but it won't last a whole day without power

      • Dont forget this is 4080 laptop… So its probably equivalent to desktop 4070

    • +1

50 series mobile will be even more dissapointing than the desktop versions, they have same or less core count and barely any efficiency improvement. The 5080 however does have 16gb VRAM so that is a worthwhile upgrade. They will also be significantly more expensive than this deal.

    • Sure, but don't forget this is on sale and, if you ignore the AI shenanigans, still a bargain performance-wise.

  • reviews seem to be pretty bad for the HP omens laptop. (motherboards frying, screen bleeds….) any opinion on that?

    • These ranges will usually be less reliable than a "business range" laptop, and any decent laptop GPU is going to create heat issues.

    • At least for this one since I own it. There is no issues so far in the 1-2 years I have been using it. There is a problem with thermals if you have any high load like rendering models/videos or playing AAA games. But 2 solutions to that, either get acooling pad (GT500/GT600) or find a way to prop it up. This is what you can expect since this is the cheapest laptop with a RTX4080 and RTX4090. Build is flimsy, but I take it everywhere. So far no issues as well in that regard.

Let me know if you have more questions.

    • Have a 2080 hp laptop that is still going (bought November 2020)

Could be the exception as I do undervolt and it sits on a cooling pad.

Edit and now that I think hmm maybe it needs a upgrade the 4080 is OOS.

  • Bought one last year during the last HP promo in December.

Performance wise, it is a beast and can run most AAA games on ultra settings with no issues.

Please note however that the power supply is a BRICK and the noise will DEFINITELY wake your misses up if you are on the computer while she is asleep.

    • Yep, the 240W power supply is approx 20cm x 20cm x 5cm. You definitely need headphones if you plan on running in Max Performance mode.

    • Agreed with all your points there.

It does make noise, but its a non-issue if you are just looking for the cheapest laptop with access to the RTX 4080/RTX4090 GPU.

  • Holy 2300$`s 4080….
2 years before I bought legion pro 7i (13900hx+4080) on 3800$. losing 1000$ within 2 years seems make sense.
