We really liked Andor but I can understand why some people would say it's slow and boring. I don't remember specifics but I don't know how much you would get out of just watching the first 3 episodes of Season 1.

    • +9

I initially watch a little bit then stopped during the first episode for several months as I thought it may have been boring. I am glad I picked it up again as the later episodes, I think it was the episodes 3, 4 and 5, was a perfect pacing and build up to an event both in story telling, acting and visuals and it continued for the rest of the episodes.

      Star Wars for adults.

For reference top five TV shows:

      1. True Detective (season one)
      2. The Wire
      3. Mad Men
      4. Andor
      5. Band of Brothers, The Pacific
      • +4

        The sopranos is up there

        • +4

And Westworld (season 1) and Carnivale

Honourable mentions go to Boardwalk Empire and "Oz"

      • +2

Where would you put Dark? And Narcos?

      • +3

Deadwood, Sopranos, Tokyo Vice, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Twin Peaks (original) all glaring omissions.

        • -4

          Breaking Bad is so overrated.

          • @MrZ: Probably the weakest on the list but still good plotlines.

            • -1

@Captain Yobbo: I watched the first couple of episodes but just couldn't get into it.

        • +1

Deadwood is the absolute high point of tv. Dennis Franz in NYPD Blue the high point of tv acting.

          • @Donmega123: I love the earlier seasons of NYPD Blue, it captures the zeitgeist of mid 90s Manhattan quite well.

Have you watched Homicide: Life on the Street?

            • @Captain Yobbo: No I think I read the book 20 years ago when I was on a wire trip. It was very good maybe just a little too left wing. I should watch it soon.

              • @Donmega123: Yes please do, it's a fictionalised version of the book with a story arc about the Latonya Wallace case playing out in the background. Does a great job capturing the 80s/90s Baltimore zeitgeist (not quite as good as The Wire but still very enjoyable). Characters are solid and likeable, and there's even a crossover with NYPD Blue in the later seasons. One of my all time favourite series, I've watched it several times.

    • +3

Agree really gotta get to the aldhani heist episode. From there the show is impossible to put down

    • It's broken into essentially 3 or 4 episode movies, with the first 3 episodes being the first movie. Half the main characters aren't even introduced until episode 4.

    • +3

Andor & Mandalorian were good. Pity about the rest…

      • +1

Well first 2 seasons of Mando, S3 was a stinker.

        • Haven't seen S3, that is a pity.

    • +16

why some people would say it's slow and boring.

      Those people are wrong.

Andor is hands-down the best Star Wars content ever created (with the exception of Rogue One which is its direct sequel), whether we're talking canon or expanded universe.

It's essentially a noir, Sci-Fi, hero myth drama with Star Wars dressing and that's why people don't like it. There's no goofy ass aliens, no lightsabers, no Jedi, no force, very little pew-pew battles, no cringey love interest story arcs, no black & white fairy-tale characters; it's a dark, realistic look at what life in the dystopian Empire would be like for the average Joe and the age-old rebellion against tyranny fable that is the core of the entire Star Wars plotline.

It's finally giving Star Wars the Christopher Nolan treatment that the Batman universe got with the Dark Knight trilogy which essentially made Batman accessible and enjoyable for a wider, more adult audience.

      • +2

Andor is the closest thing to the original movies which exists in my opinion. It feels like it takes place in that same universe, in terms of visual style, a feeling of believability to the characters, the feeling there's a real world behind them, etc. It's not about the jedi / lightsabers / etc, they felt fine in the original trilogy because they felt more like they existed in a grounded world like Andor's.

        • +1

Andor is the closest thing to the original movies which exists in my opinion.

In my opinion, Andor objectively eclipses not only the original movies but the original vision George Lucas had for the franchise/IP as a whole by leaps and bounds.

George might have had a concept for the SW universe that resembled what Andor is but back in the 1970s/1980s it just wasn't achievable as the art form and technology hadn't advanced to a sufficient level. It also wasn't possible with the prequel trilogy later on, when Star Wars was turned into a dumbed-down, cash cow franchise.

Andor is like a retroactive, ret-conned Godfather Part I and Part II to George Lucas' Godfather Part III. George did his best with the original trilogy and took a another, sorely misjudged stab at the franchise with the prequel trilogy but better minds with better writing, more time and the benefit of hindsight have finally done Star Wars justice with Andor.

It's very similar to the trajectory the Alien franchise took, where Ridley Scott nailed the first film, f**ked up virtually every subsequent attempt to reboot it and then other directors/writers came into the fray with their own takes on the IP and completely put Ridley Scott and even his original film to shame (namely, the Alien: Isolation videogame, which is the only Alien universe content imo to do proper justice to the original concept/IP with a fully-fleshed out lore).

      • I like Rogue One. But its definitely no where near Andor quality. Rogue One just above the level of The Phantom Menace/Attack of the Clones. But not as good as Revenge of the Sith or Return of the Jedi. It has some great moments. But there are still a tonne of moments that make me want to hit the fast forward button.

      • +1

Thanks. I detest what SW became, might give this one a go.

      • +3

        Those people are wrong.

If they found it slow & boring, they found it slow and boring. Not every show works for everyone. I thought Andor was the best made D+ Star Wars show so far. But I did find it slow in some places and I had to resist the urge to look at my phone, the first three episodes were the ones were mostly where I struggled with it. Normally I have no issues with a slow burn type show but personally thought they could have edited it a bit in some places to just speed it up a little.

      • I don't know about all that, it was quite dull in the same way John Le Carre novels are a bit dull. The prison bit was cool, kind of felt a bit lifted from face/off.

      • +7

        Try watching it.
It genuinely is the only recent Disney content that actually doesn't fit that bill.
Sadly they'd already poisoned the well so much by that point, most had already moved on and nobody watched it.

        • Good points. For those reasons I haven't watched anything SW since the movies. Watched a couple of eps of Andor based on some of the (admittedly hyperbolic) comments on here, it was pretty good, I like the Cyberpunk-ish vibes in some scenes. Obviously it's watered down to suit Disney's target market but I think they did a good job at making a more "mature" product.

      • +2

You haven't even watched it ffs… you're judging this series based on the drama surrounding the other, justifiably-hated Disney SW movies. Just watch it.

      • +1

        Daddy chill

      • +1

Honestly, this is the best thing in SW history. I rate it above the Originals, though the originals win in importance and cultural impact

        • I dunno. Episode 9 was a masterpiece XD

      • Not following bro

    • +2

Damn, people say that? Best series I've seen in years. Like a noir that wouldve been good anywhere but they put it into star wars universe.

    • +3

I always shake my head at people calling anything that has as slower pace boring. Its bizarre

    • +1

Yeah.. I think I watched 2 or 3 eps when it came out but couldn't focus on them. Initially had super high hopes, couldn't believe the cast etc. but just couldn't hold my attention through whole eps, wasn't in right moment for it. Didn't help with all the Star Wars saturation in recent years… Everyones into half consuming a show and half consuming their phone doom scrolls simultaneously..

Actually took like a year or so to get enough free time to be like 'hmm nothing interesting to watch, maybe I should try Andor again'.. Was still sceptical but started from scratch and by 3-4 eps in, absolutely hooked. Was raving about it for weeks afterwards… It's like 2-3 movies worth of story, but goes deeper than any of of them. Really, the movies are all very 'surface' when you break it down.

Obiwan, Mando & Book of Boba and Ahsoka and even acolyte & skeleton crew etc are fine and all, but lets face it, aside from Obiwan which also gives some decent lore building people want to see, they're mostly rehashing well worn storytelling & styles from other things and selling baby grogu's and other toys. Nothing wrong with that, but they certainly don't leave you raving about them years later..

Frothing for the new Andor season, honestly the best thing since the first movie…

Andor into Rogue One into A New Hope is epic. Everything you'd want out of a prequel setup.

    • millennial star wars fans need lightsaber duals every 5 mins otherwise they can't hold attention..

  • +22

Do I lose my rights to sue disney if I wacth this YouTube videos?

  • +31

Easily the best star wars tv series they've made. If you enjoyed Rogue One you need to watch this.

      • +11

Andor is shot in actual locations. Mandalorian is shot in a sphere. That alone makes Mando more Temu.

      • +4

They couldn't be more opposite. Mandalorian for family-friendly easy viewing. Andor for incredible story, characters and scenery.

      • -7

People negging and arguing overrated franchise shows to many sheep with nothing better to discuss but worship billion dollar companies who only care about money 😂😂😂

        • -3

I was just trolling 😂 knew people would bite

      • Welcome to your opinion. I enjoyed the Mandalorian as well and it definitely hits the spot as a space western but Andor just ticks more boxes for me.

    • +1

      100%.

  • +8

As much as I've disliked a lot of the Star Wars that's come out in recent years, this series was one of the better ones. I'm looking forward to S02.

  • +8

Epic TV show. My favourite of all time. Great writing and visuals. Gave me chills multiple times.

  • +8

My favourite Disney Star Wars content by far, can't wait for S2

    • +3

Agree with this comment. Best of the Disney suite that I have seen

  • +4

Great show. Can't wait for season 2, finally dropping in a few months.

Yes it's a slow burn but you can really get into the drama. Not your usual swash-buckling Star Wars outing.

  • +5

Best Star Wars content there is. If you’re not absolutely hooked by end of the third ep then it won’t be a show for you.

  • +1

Aw I thought this was the new season for a moment.

  • +5

Just finished watching this. I agree with some that I almost gave up after the first couple of episodes. Glad I kept with it, excellent acting and the prison sequence was excellent. Best star wars series by far.

  • +3

Great writing, acting and set designs musical scoring and locations. Interesting marketing move by Disney+. We can only hope that season 2 keeps up the very high standard of S1.

  • +2

Andor is awesome, even my wife liked and as we watched it a second time.

  • +5

I watched this before Obi Wan since I thought “I’ll watch the worse one first cause if I watch the better show I’ll never get to this”

    I was soo wrong!
This is the best show (star wars or not) ever! I didn’t even watch obi wan fully!

    Must watch

  • Not in 4K :(

  • +4

Thanks! Time to rewatch! So excited to have a series that isn't just about fan-service, or selling toys. (Although if they made a 'Rogue Squadron' series, similar to the books, I think that would be amazing.)

  • We got more Andor coming?

    • Next and last season coming April 22nd.

  • +6

This show highly respects the intelligence of its viewers, and it isn’t afraid to show that with its rich and complex screenplay.
Season 2 will only delve deeper into that and I cannot wait!

  • +6

Best Star Wars show or movie to come out in a good while.

  • Interesting idea putting full episodes on YT

  • Andor is so expensive, $645M for 2 seasons, that Disney is desperate for people to subscribe to D+ to watch it. I doubt it would have got a second season if it wasn't already locked in place before S1 aired due to S1's much poorer than expected / needed ratings to justify that extremely high cost.

    • I'll be re-subbing for Andor season 2.

    • What are you talking about? Andor was a good show and rated quite well. It rated better than The Mandalorian on Rotten Tomatoes and just slightly lower on IMDB.

      • I'm not talking about reviewer or user rating scores, I'm talking about Neilson type ratings as in how many people actually watched the show. Andor didn't do very well in the minutes viewed ratings. Andor has the third lowest viewership along with The Acolyte having the second lowest, despite both shows being the most expensive to make, and Skeleton Crew was the lowest viewed.
