  • If I have existing flybuys points can I use these to get the Apple gift cards with the 20x bonus? Do I first convert to Flybuys dollars?

  • +2

With the new version, it has instructions for the cashier to pull the tab. So I guess it's gotten easier to match the barcode?

    • I highly doing the cashiers will actually do this though. They're also supposed to hand out scams awareness flyers to people purchasing gift cards and this barely happens too.

    • I bought one of the pull tab ones for $200. Insisted on opening it then and there and redeeming it.
The silver scratch off stuff was gone and the code had been defaced.
They are just opening the packaging and resealing it.

      • Just opened a $200 gift card and the silver scratch off mask was also gone and the code not visible. Can the card still be redeemed or do I need to take it back to the supermarket?

        • +1

Log a ticket with both Coles and Apple support, had a similar issue and Coles basically hand balled it over to Apple support. But Apple take 10 business days to provide a resolution so it's pretty much a waiting game now.
I took the card back in-store but they basically just gave me the number for Customer support.

          • @dollarandcents: Thanks - these were actually bought at Big W and the person who bought them for me has returned to Big W an hour ago and they immediately replaced the gift card. Big W also went through the other apple gift cards and observed that many of them have been forged too. This is a major issue for the retailers - hopefully they check their CCTV and bring a stop to this criminal enterprise.

  • Any upcoming up bonus cash back on shop back?

  • Can you use these to buy replacement airpods?

    • Online no, you can pay for the replacement with only credit card.

In store yes, they want to see the giftcard (physical or email) though, so make sure you have that and not just the code noting down.

Source: I bought replacement airpods, twice…

      • Actually depends on which department you ended up with, you might be able to?

I had an iPad express replacement under AC+ recently and they just sent over a link to pay via Apple Pay. I ended up paying with a credit card but I saw my Apple Account Balance (you'll need to add it in the wallet first) as an option. So it may work?

Subscription-based AC+ won't work as we already know obviously. But surely Apple GC can be used on more and more stuff over time.

      • +1

Online yes, add them to your Apple Account.

Never ever am I buying physical Apple gift card, still chasing woolies

  • Never again! I've bought two times in the last six month and had huge issues both times.

    • what happened?

      • +1

First time I've bought six cards three of them were giving "invalid code". After a couple of weeks and multiple cycles through apple support and coles support I've got a refund.
Second time, I've bought three cards and all three of them had mismatched code on sleeves and on the cards (btw, cards looked absolutely fine, I reckon apple production line got some serious issues). After another couple of weeks and multiple apple support communications apple generated new codes.

        • +1

I agree, it’s like the codes being scratched off before it being sealed.

  • I guess I'll wait for the online ones, hopefully they come before next iphone launch….

  • Is this the most optimal way to upgrade to a new iPhone?

Approx $1.2k Apple GCs and then buy on the Apple website and sell old model privately or trade in?

What about waiting for a 15% off deal for a Big W/Officeworks etc.?

    • Just get TGN cards instead and buy from retailers to stack the discounts. Stack with cashback when possible as well.

Only because Apple Store rarely discount on iPhones. Other products like laptops and tablets, you can take advantage of education or EPP discounts. When stacked with discounted GC, sometimes better than discounts from retailers.

      • What is TGN? And how would you stack with the discounts from retailers, AFAIK Big W 10% off from WW EDR does not count towards Apple products and that's all I can think of.

Great! I can save some money paying of my tax bill!

    • +1

How do you save money of your tax return?

      • +2

It was just a classic tax scam joke.

I think I might share my experience in the recent purchase

I went to Woolies and bought 3 x $20-$500 variable load Apple gift card and load with $500 each

The packaging was fully intact and I witness the lady pull the tab to reveal the activation bar code inside for payment.

Everything looks good with activation completed as shown on all receipts.

Went home and tried to load the gift card to my Apple account and failed multiple times. After doing some searching online and realise the redemption code should be 16 digits and mine only has 14 digits.

So I contacted Apple immediately via chat and told them about issue I have with the gift cards, they asked me to send them photos of the gift cards, receipts and the packaging. I also was told it will takes up to 10 business days to resolve.

At the same time, I also called Woolies gift card department and lodge a case with them. Also sending photos of all the cards, receipts and packaging.

After couple days, Woolies replied back with an email saying to go back to the store and will get refunded for the purchase. Good job to Woolies to communicate with the store manager so they are aware of the issue.

Apple came back about 7 days later and say “Sorry we can’t help you, go back and get help from Woolies”

If you need to buy Apple gift cards, make sure you check if the redemption code is 16 digits (letters and numbers) before purchasing.

Lesson learnt and probably will only buy online in the future.

    • Sorry to hear :(

It really sounds like scammers have premade packages ready to go and they're do the switcharoo in store so people so are activating their dodgy, sealed, fake cards :(

Fingers crossed I haven't had problems buying thousands of dollars worth via Coles and only a few from Woolies.

      • Could you explain why scammers would place dodgy gift cards back on the shelf?
If they are going to steal the legit one I get that. But not sure how they activate it.
It’s not like you are paying the money for the card to the scammer - you pay Coles or Woolies.

        • +1

My understanding is they basically do a swap — the victim ends up paying for and activating the scammer's gift cards. This works because activation is at point of payment, so instead of paying for and activating the gift card in the packaging that you bought, you're activating another gift card which the scammer has already swapped out.

  • 10% discount is not at all worth all the trouble, avoid

Damn so much bad feedback on these gift cards.
I need $1500 tomorrow, I guess I'll buy from HCF for 5% off.

Any better deals for egift cards out there?

  • +1

I know people report issues, but I’ve never had a problem buying Apple (and previously iTunes) gift cards from Coles or Woolies. This is going back years.

  • +1

Coles stores are refusing to sell Apple gift cards, citing technical issues. I visited two Coles stores, one in Edgecliff and the other in Potts Point, and received the same response.

    • +1

Yeah, they removed all the cards (except the Promotion banner lol).
I managed to take some cards in another Coles but they refused to sell them saying I would have to call customer service to get refund. later.
      (April fool?)

    • same here for coles in both hurstville westfield and hurstville station.

Just bought 2 x $500 from Coles Rhodes, succesfully redeemed and use it to buy mac mini from AOC straight away.. I havent seen the flybuys bonus in my account yet but hopefully it will come through in the next few days…

There were 2x 20-500 apple gift card left when I left the store but heaps of $200 ones.

      • Is the eligibility criteria the same for AOC vs Apple Education store? I had the same plan as yours but was eyeing the education store as my partner is doing a TAFE online course.

        • +1

I went through AOC cause it is about $40 cheaper, picked up my mac mini at Bondi apple store yesterday no question asked, just scanned my purchase barcode wait for 5 minutes and off I go..

I dont think they will check if you are student or not at all..

          • @Pol4rbe4r: Nice! I'll try this, worst is the order gets cancelled in which case I'll re-order through the regular education store.

  • I was abit worried about the scams but I went into coles today. $1600 worth (x4 cards) and this store only has self self check outs. The guy told me to peel and rep the tag down to scan them. Took them into the Apple Store 20 mins later to buy a new phone, no issues.
The guy at the Apple Store who serviced me hadn’t seen these gift cards before and made a comment about how much better they were due to scams.

  • I brought over $2,000 of apple gift cards that have been tampered with in the most recent woolies sale.

  • I bought 5x$500 from Coles Burwood East store in the morning around 7:30 2/4, successfully redeemed and use the apple account balance to buy a refurbished Macbook pro with no issues. The Macbook pro got delivered yesterday, just like brand new except "certified refurbish" printed on the box.

However, I've checked the Flybuys account just now and only received 2500 flybuy points.
Is the bonus points come later? Anyone received the bonus points yet?

    • +1

Bonus Flybuy Points can take few days

  • Just tried Coles Chadstone, almost all their $200 and variable loads are tampered. I took some effort to educate the staff (with a bit of effort as they’ve been told by HQ that version 2 can’t be tampered).

    Be extra careful all!

    • almost all their $200 and variable loads are tampered

Maybe you are mistaken? Did you take any photos to share with us?

I took some effort to educate the staff

Why would they believe a random off the street?

      • Maybe you are mistaken? Did you take any photos to share with us?

Unfortunately, I didn't think to take any photos, however, I was lucky enough to be able to keep a tampered "souvenir" from Forest Hill Coles, which I will share in a moment to explain how this all works.

Why would they believe a random off the street?

Honestly, this took so much effort. I took 5 cards off the shelf, asked the cashier if I could open them in front of them to make sure they are not tampered with. I was first met with a "I've checked them already, they are completely fine", which I kept pushing and said "Let's open them together".

All 5 of them had only 14 characters out of 16 characters, which put me in a very awkward situation whereby the cashier was like "are you sure they are meant to have 16 characters?". Absolutely confident, I told him, just to prove my point, I will purchase a $20 card; I'm 100% the scammers won't bother to waste time to steal $20.

So, grabbing a $20 card, opening in front of him; lo-and-behold, it has 16 digits and he understood what I meant by the scammers scratch off either the first 2 characters or the last 2 characters.

        • yep last time I bought $700 worth from Woolies, all had only 14 characters .. never again

  • I am confused at this one If i buy $2000 worth of gift cards, How much am I getting back?

    • +4

If you are confused by the promotion, you should not participate.

  • yeah looks like it. too many scam stories on this thread already.

  • Went to 2 coles stores and no stock.

  • Yes, no stock or scam
