A great metal record to add to your collection. Released in '86 and still sounds as fresh as ever.

Brb downloading Napster on my windows XP desktop PC
Napster predates XP. Nobody used Napster on XP because it was already shut down by that point.
Came to say the same thing. Napster was Win98, around about the time Metallica cut their hair and started wearing makeup…
I was more of a WinMX man
Arguably their greatest album 🤘
RtL > MoP
KeA > RtL > MoP
Lulu > KeA > RtL > MoP
aJfA is my fave
Admittedly dunno about anything after black but this is as tight as tight can be. Fkn tight.
airtight > watertight > metallica
airtight > watertight > metallica

@fantombloo: the napster debacle throws shade on the historical record
whatever claims they had to anything's made brittle in light of that bullshit
@0jay: Mate I don't necessarily like them personally, but gold is gold. I wish this wasn't a great album so I could sh1t on them more. But it is.

Oh yeah definitely… copyright law and high-priced lawyers are so f**king metal. As is hiring online investigators to find out who downloaded your songs and valuing each act of downloading a song to constitute $100,000 dollars in damages. Hardcore.
There's no way in hell I can ever listen to Metallica anymore, not that I ever gave too much of a sh*t about the "Big 4" as they all sound the same to me and I prefer world metal over most mainstream garbage any day of the week but Metallica has been thoroughly eclipsed in the eyes of everyone save for the people who never listened to metal past the 1990s.
@Miami Mall Alien: Wow man that was 25 years ago now, a long time to hold a grudge! A lot has changed since then, and Lars has openly regretted their actions. They've since attempted to make amends by embracing streaming services and releasing free recordings.
@Mr Plow: Still doesn't make them relevant in my eyes; there's so many better bands to listen to if you simply take the time to broaden your horizons beyond the 1990s.
Besides, the damage was done when Metallica (along with other big names) set the precedent that mainstream musicians can punitively seek out damages for copyright infringement and launch massive campaigns against "piracy" on the basis of ridiculously unethical/anti-consumer laws; it helped further entrench the dinosaur business model of the entertainment industry which is still clinging on for dear life to this day.
TL;DR: f**k them and the lightning they rode in on.
@Miami Mall Alien: I strongly disagree there. Metallica shot themselves in the foot by seeking damages from fans, and thus it was not set as a precedent.
Without Metallica doing that record labels and artists may not have embraced digital streaming services such as Spotify as an alternative to physical media sales, because they saw it as the only remaining viable option to combat piracy. That dinosaur business model is almost dead now as a result.
Metallica will always be as relevant to metal in the way that the Beatles are still relevant to pop rock. They established a foundation on which many subsequent artists built sub-genres.

Someone wasn't paying attention in school when they taught you what the 'greater than' sign means…
this, and Rust in Peace are my top two for Metallica associated artists, for sure

I’m gutted they canceled their last tour.
I’m more gutted I missed tickets for this tour :(
You in Melbourne?
Shoot me a message closer to the date if you don't mind seated. I got two tickets as a gift to a mate, but he has mad social anxiety and may pull out last minute, if that happens feel free to bop along with me.
Reminder added to calendar
more power to your mate
Yeah I missed out too as tickets went on sale when I was at work and had no payment methods on me facepalm.

How much for the CD ?
I'm just pulling your strings…
yeh, nah…pretty sure one of the most influential thrash albums of all time, released in 1986, was popular before netflix was launched in 1997… as a DVD-rental service
Amazing that Netflix was around in 1997. We didn't have DVD rental by mail services in Australia until 2003.
This is a very stupid statement.
Nice try troll
It's never good when everyone does an r/whoosh
They were Putin on a good show there…
Been waiting for a deal. Thanks mate!
Saw them in 92 at the Perth entertainment centre :)
I was quite happy when they played Whiplash :o
It was 1993.
Which show did you go to? The first or second? Here's superb audience footage of the 2nd Metallica show at the Perth Entertainment Centre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9ewQR0Kr6IHere's the first night - this was where they played Whiplash. Unfortunately the audio and video quality is not as good in this recording. :(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPMkqoGsodQwell there you go it was the first night lol I would never forget them playing whiplash as they seemed worried playing a song like that to all the teenyboppers….
You would not believe the amount of people that thought the black album was their first lol
I was there 1st night. All I remember is Kyuss.
Attended the 89 And Justice for all tour at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney. It was insane!
That would have been cool as
It was hectic. If my (vague) memory of the night serves me correctly people were banging down the metal shutters to let us in. Absolute chaos 🤣
Peak Metallica. I just realised that out of the big 4. They made the earliest great album. Slayer did it later with Reign in blood and Anthrax with Among the living.
Megadeth were the last with Rust in peace in 1990.
Bought this for my nephews. Will hopefully eject them out of the terrible grungle obsession they're currently sickened with.
grunge is one of the most deeply depressing developments in popular culture

This comment is wrong in every major way.
wrong in every major way
unpopular doesn’t make it wrong
@HamesJoffman: hardcore, as a 'genre', was unmarketable. they tried, failed, tried, failed. what that dynamic allowed, was for the scene to seethe and produce, largely without corporate corruption. there were exceptions but broadly speaking this was a losing bet, trying to capitalise on this scene was an exercise in frustration.
what nirvana demonstrated (not alone but they spearheaded it) was that you find a talented band who're willing to pose off just right, you can turn it into a juggernaut. grunge was an industry initiative to orient these bands to profit and ultimately produce bands with the same objective.
you prefer that to what came before, have at it. me i wish it never happened.
Beautiful, bought thanks OP
Was given the tape in 89’, opened my eyes and ears.
People are allowed to like the things they like.
I get peoples opinions vary but calling them a "wannabe-AC/DC band" is an insane take.
You're right, they were probably more wannabe-Judas Priest or wannabe-Black Sabbath. I just never understood why some people continued to like Metallica beyond the age of 14.
I just never understood why
If the world confuses you, it is not everyone else's fault.
@1st-Amendment: I'm not confused as to why most >15 year olds lost interest in Metallica. This is a no-brainer. People's tastes evolve and become more sophisticated over time, and as they are introduced to music outside their immature 14-year-old group, they obviously encounter higher quality music. For some people this didn't happen. I just wonder why. I saw a youtube clip of a 45-year-old bogan in a car listening to a 1991 Metallica CD the other day. Possibly the most cringe moment I've experienced in years.
@ForkSnorter: ForkSnorter sitting alone in their shed, watching a video of someone having a good time: "what an immature loser"

Telling us you watched this is pretty cringe.
@ForkSnorter: After you see footage of the concert in Moscow with a million people attending , it just sounds like freedom.
@ForkSnorter: You:
I'm not confused
Also you:
I just never understood why
You literally confessed that you can't understand how different people can have different tastes.
After you've finished talking smack about other people's music interests you'll probably then tell them their choice of beer taste like piss…
Time to grow up. When you're an adult you'll learn that's ok to like different things to other people.you'll probably then tell them their choice of beer taste like piss…
I don't drink alcohol, so all beer tastes horrible to me. You have to become desensitized to the taste of alcohol to enjoy it. I gave it up after it gave me gastritis, and after I learned that alcohol increases the risk of various types of cancer.
When you're an adult you'll learn that's ok to like different things to other people.
It's also ok to express your dislike of different things.
It's also ok to express your dislike of different things.
Of course, its called free speech, one of the most valuable rights that exists in the free world.
I'm glad we could find some common ground.
When you're an adult you'll learn that's ok to like different things to other people.
Do as I say, not as I do
I'd hate to think how much effort it took you try to find something that doesn't fit the claim…
I can smell the desperation from here…
@1st-Amendment: Effortless, actually. I just closed my eyes and clicked on a random comment of yours.
Would love to get into vinyl. But its so damn expensive!
You don't need to. It's literally the worst way to improve your listening experience. Much more important are your stereo setup, your speakers (including speaker placement), the acoustics of your room, etc. In blind tests, most people can't reliably tell vinyl from high-bitrate digital unless the mastering differs or they are trained to hear the difference.
for me vinyl is like watches. sure you don't need it and could just as easily (more easily even) use a digital method but it's about the experience
Is it kind of like getting a film camera and a typewriter? I find it I get more nostalgia from the end experience, i.e. from the music itself, or from the content of books and movies, not from actual physical objects involved in producing the experience.
@ForkSnorter: if you see an album as an art form that encompasses cover-art, insert art etc and you find your enjoyment of the package is enhanced by experiencing it in the same format it was originally released in (in the case of older releases) then it has a lot to do with the physical object.
having said all that collectors can be very anal and precious and for some it's all about the object (and the rarity of a given release that can have little to do with the music or other aesthetic value).
A little too harsh. Certain masters are engineered for more warmth and audiophiles are trained to hear the difference on vinyl. Vinyl lovers appreciate the tactile experience of the record collection. The stereo setup is a good point but vinyl is a good source to begin your audiophile journey
Vinyl has demonstrably lower fidelity than CD. Vinyl enthusiasts are more about the experience than the fidelity though. However, it's a sad fact that music mastered for vinyl by record labels is often better than the masters made for CD and other digital media.
The forum's most popular trash metal band but the most popular is not the best.
