    • Matching the promotions from the competition. The other day Dan Murphys matches First Choice Liquor's 10% storewide deal and now they're doing the same for Vintage Cellars. It pays to check the competition whenever Dan Murphys runs one of these as you may find it cheaper or something more interesting to buy instead.

Vintage cellars and First Choice are usually competitive with their spirits if on sale.

Looking forward to "characteristics of oak barrel staves with the essence of bourbon or brandy, a hint of smoke from the charring process, background notes of dried fruit and a heavy delivery of sweet creamy butterscotch. Notes of custard, maple and honey flavours coat the tongue and finishes with a touch of pepper."

Sounds like when I try to cook an apple pie. Particularly the "hint of smoke from the charring process"

The great Australian wine glut continues.

      • Exports back to precovid levels since China getting them again.

Just evidence that Dan's no longer aims for low prices. They used to lead the best prices, now they only match them and run almost no specials themselves. They have completely changed their business model from 5 years ago with much higher prices, which is why they can justify discount codes now. I went to buy something I brought Sunday and it was exactly 10% dearer today. They are at best a shadow of their former selves.

and so many are their own brands stealth wise just look at the back label for Pinnacle Drinks etc (owned by Endeavour Group aka Dan's)

        • Yup anything pinnacle they pay significantly less for and have huge profit margins on. To be fair some pinnacle lines are good (mostly some wines). The beers and RTD's are mostly crap.

          • +1

@diggityfish: Half the Pinnacle stuff is just bottom tier cleanskin crap with a fancy label slapped on the front. You're honestly better off buying wine at Aldi.

Pinnacle label wines are to Dans what Anko is to Kmart. Cheap, high margin and mostly rubbish.

Of course, like Anko products, there are some exceptions. I've found their Aperol knockoff to be a very good, cost effective substitute for instance.

          • +1

@diggityfish: it's harder to find the independent wineries now in Dan's you lift a bottle then read the back & it's Pinnacle sadly, sure some are ok but the cheeky bastards also fudge the 'expert reviews' to push their own, not that I'm saying you should trust any reviews

      • +2

I'm less of a buyer these days but do occasionally "google shopping" my old favourite tipples.
Have been amazed how high Dans prices are compared to everyone else.
I suppose if customers dont ask to price match but just 'trust' the old adverts of daily scouring of competitors deals, then Dan is more than happy to take the mark up.

It was reported DM sales fell 3.6% coz punters prefer to drink at the pub.

    • How do goats make beer? Or is it beer made from mountain goats?

  • Any great single malt whisky deals?

At Liquorland Laphroaig Select is $70 (from $112). It's not to everyone's taste, but a $49 discount's not bad.

      • wow how could I have missed that. I've tried the Laphroaig 10 and I enjoyed it with Toscanello cigar. I'll grab a bottle of the 'Select'. Thanks!

  • I spotted that Liquorland already has the Grant Burge 5th Generation range discounted to $14/bottle ($12.60 in any 6).
Buy 6, add the 10% off using SAVE10 and you get it down to $11.34 which really is quite good for wine I consider to be just below the Grant Burge Barossa Ink (which retails for around $18/bottle).
