Guys…please read their facebook page and decide whether you want to buy Kogan products or not…!!

  • Anyone using this set top box? Any good?

    • dont expect it to last longer then 10minutes ;).
No but seriously you cant really lose $29

you will if u buy this….

    • It's pretty rubbish.

I got one from Good Guys, box was marked $29, needed something as my older TV doesn't even have a guide, and takes about 3 seconds to change channel. Lady at counter told me "the best I can do is $28". Ohhh-kay thanks?.

What I have looks identical to the above, apart from the Kogan branding of course. Mine is a "GVA" ("value for your lifestyle").

For my purposes (needing a guide and slightly-faster-than-glacial channel changes) - it works.

The guide is pretty bad, you see one channels worth at a time, and when you look at the guide for another channel, it changes channels. You can't see what's on on each channel without traversing all the channels.

Sometimes the guide data helpfully shows you what was on at 4am that morning, or sometime yesterday, for no apparent reason.

The PVR functionality is completely rubbish, and you'd be daft to trust it to record something you care about. If it does actually record something, unless you manually rename the file, you end up with a bunch of files named by date/time and channel - good luck finding that episode of "Better Homes and Gardens".

The price is good, that's all I can say. It's serving my purposes (just) until a better FetchTV box arrives.

      • That GVA set top box looks identical because it probably is comes out of the same chinese factory as the Kogan.

    I want it $9 delivered again :-P

    • Lucky, cost me $18 for delivery and i live in metro!

  • I bought one of these el cheapo set top boxes from Big W once, it literally stopped working with 1 hour. They are cheap for a reason…

    • you mean they are the same brand?

  • I would try this one for $29 from The Good Guys.
    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/GVA_High_Definition_…

    • you get to return it or exchange for something else if you're not happy with it….

      ordering online, it's a hassle!

      support those local shops :-)

  • Anyone got any recommendations for a good set top box - PVR functionality not really required.

    • I have a Strong 4531 from Big W, around $50. Had it for about 18 months. Works well as a HD tuner and Media Player. PVR functionality works but is clunky.

picked this up previously at $9 delivered. Only had it hooked up to an old CRT, but it performed well. Now only use it as a media player (with USB stick inserted) in the caravan, but still going strong.

    • Can this be used as a media player for watching stuff off your USB other than PVR recordings?

      • +1

you could watch some mpeg/mpg/avi but not mkv/rmvb or high resolution stuff….

        • Ah thanks for the info!

        • I have one, and it does play 720p mkv files with AC3 audio but not with DTS.

        • can't remember if it does that, but I play my mkv through Soniq(JB HiFi) TV :-P

  • Can I ask a potentially-obvious question?
If I plug in a portable HDD into the USB slot for recording live TV, then would the PVR simply wake up for timer recordings, then go to sleep again? And in the process be able to power up and power down the portable HDD appropriately?

    • it does wake up my USB hard drive and then go to sleep after the scheduled record time!

  • +1

I still have my Highlander DH2826 from 2 years ago.. Still going strong. There can only be one indeed.

  • my 55" kogan arrived and it was cracked. going to take ages to resolve and Toll IPEC are scumbags.

bit off topic but it really coloured my impression of KOGAN. my first sale off them. And then the exactly 1 hour to reach someone on their hotline.

    hell

    • Toll IPEC broke my stuff too

      would really not recommend them…….

as a user for this PVR(got it for $9 delivered - it won't happen again)

I would say software should be redesign, it is so hard to navigate the EPG(Electronic Programme Guide), and it's a hassle to schedule recordings!

for $9 I would not complaint, but for $29 + shipping, you take your own risk!

  • PVR / tuner is fine, but EPG is slow and doesn't always update, subtitles don't work.
