If anyone wants to try their luck, Gerry is offering 10% back in HN gift cards. Could perhaps ask JB if they can match HN offer and then sign up to this deal

Will also leave this guide here for everyone else too :)
Wiki and FAQ: JB Hi-Fi Mobile Plans

Just a gentle reminder: please do not push for the $99 to be refunded. It’s already heavily discounted off the ticket price

    • +31

"don't push for the $89 back"

      My mind's telling me noo

But my ozbargainer sense is telling me yeees

    • Isnt HN price higher?

      • Yes but they’re running a 10% back in HN gc promotion for purchases $500+

        • 10% back in GC is not equal to 10% off by the way

          • @luminair: Yes I’m aware, but because the base price of the Pixel Fold is $2197, and that you’re using a $2000 “gift card”, not sure if JB will provide the 10% back in gift cards

It was just more of an FYI, than whether it works

  • +23

If anyone wants to get one for photo editing from an actual camera on Lightroom I would not recommend it, the size of the screen is nice for viewing pics but Lightroom is super laggy and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is barely capable of running it :(. Tested it alongside a iPhone 12 mini which could run it with 50MP pics from camera 100% smooth with no issues but the Pixel 9 Pro Fold struggles to load and export images and sliders to adjust basic stuff like exposure take a while to respond.

    • +40

Sounds like the pixel fold….folds….under pressure?

        YEEEEAАААНННН!!!!!!

    • +10

Sounds likely to be the Android version of the app that's the issue unfortunately

      • +12

i didnt have any issue using Lightroom on a Fold 4. I think many apps are just not optimised for Tensor processor.

        • +1

Oh interesting. Happy to be wrong then.

    • +2

If you thought the Tensor processor is for running Lightroom then you have mistaken. Google's pixel range at the moment focuses on AI, NPU and collecting information for their Google AI Gemini. So it's not a surprise it's not as good as Mali or Snapdragon CPU phones

For that probably Samsung Galaxy range or even typical iPhones or iPads, heck even Huawei would perform better

      • +3

It's the same story for the Pixel basically every year now for heavier traditional workloads. Just warning people about that use case since the big screen might get photographers thinking that it might be nice to use for photo editing.

        • Well yeah unless you want AI workloads then Tensor might be better? who knows. Tensor is the name for data structure in artificial intelligence, hence Google use that name….

          • @neonlight: what are the AI workloads?
To use geminin you need to be connected to the internet, so there is no local LLM….

            • -2

@Ti-au: You know I'm joking right? But even if you connect to the internet some processing is done optimised on Tensor processor

    • -1

I mean, Tenshit G4 CPU is weaker than your iphone 12 mini. Look at Geekbench 6 web…

  • +1

Damn this is a good deal slightly regretting getting the P9PXL last week

Edit: actually looks like the telephoto on this is worse so idk

    • +1

Size would be the biggest consideration..
I would assume you dont use fold mobile before, and this will be lots different than normal phone. as much as i like the bargain the thickness will matter the most (for any fold series)

      • +3

Yeah. Tbh I'll probably wait until trifolds are more popular anyway because then it's truly a tablet replacement for watching wide screen video

    • +5

the cameras are way, way worse (but they're still better than Samsung, because of course they are)

      signed, P9PF owner

      • How can they be worse when Samsung has gone through so many versions of their fold.

        • +5

the camera sensors have remained the same since the 4

they're dropping "new generations" of the ZFold but it's very evident they don't care, no bigger battery, no new cameras, no enhanced durability

        • +2

I have the Fold5 and the camera is so so bad. I took few photos on holiday and when you zoom in faces it's like garbage.

I'd love to swap my P9 Pro XL to The Pixel Fold but if the camera lower quality I will just admire the phone afar :)

          • +3

@datafellows: I love the phone, don't get me wrong. The primary camera still performs very well and the telephoto/ultrawide are fine but nothing outstanding.

I got mine for $1250 in Jan, so I can't argue with it too much. But if I had paid $2700 I'd be mad

            • +2

@maybe a bot: It is ok camera for casual use, but I wouldn't take holiday photos with it :)

I got Vivo X200 Pro recently and it takes so much better photos than my Pixel 9 Pro XL. Comparing the Fold5 to Pixel the gap is even wider.

              • +4

@datafellows: I was a Pixel guy for years, but last year bought a Vivo x fold pro 3. It has a very good camera, screen and a processor. Very happy with my purchase

                • +2

@maiuspala: Same since the nexus 6p. Had enough after the 8 pro. Still very decent but not a fan of apple based sales model and almost as much as Samsung (so just got one an s25 instead).

They were a great price back in the days of p5, p7 etc under 999 then it went a bit silly. The hardware got a bit cheaper feeling as well and each time seems a bit worse in some way. Can't really argue with the JB hi-fi vouchers and hacks these days.

      • I'd say the Z-flip /fold would be the better phone.

    • nah, this is better, most of your photos aren't telephoto anyways. do you spend all day taking pictures, or spend all day on your screen? you have your answer, lol.

      • +2

        shouldn't a RRP$2,700 phone do both?

        • RRP = Recommended Retail Price, this means nothing.

it cost them roughly $400 to make the phone.

also if they put everything into the fold, no one else would buy the other models.
it can do telephoto, it just won't be as good as the P9PXL

  • New to this kind of 24 months plan and thinking to only cancel it if the company stop reimburse our personal phone bills. Would you pay less tha $800 cancellations fee of day after 6 or 12 months? Thanks

    • +2

As far as I understand you pay whatever fraction of the 24 months are left. So after 12 months, there are still 12 months left, so you pay 12/24 * 800 = $400

      I could be wrong through

    • -1

where did you get $800 from? the T&Cs says it is prorated off the "Voucher you received". so in this case prorated of $2000 which really doesn't make this an attractive deal. Can someone confirm?

      • +7

Maximum voucher repayment is $800, prorated off that.

That's how you get it to $1060 outright.

$99 first month (you can tell them to start a week later aswell but you will pay more repayment). Not sure if telstra is still refunding this.
$766 cancel fee ($800 if you didn't pay first month)
$195 for the balance of the phone

I've done this atleast 6 times with the s24 ultra deals. You can usually only get 3 at a time before system blocks you from starting a new plan, have to wait a few weeks after cancelling to get more.

        • thanks for the explanation. why did you buy 6 s24 ultras?

          • -2

            @xrailgun: To make a profit?

            • @krisspy: I’m new to this too. Did you sell the phones to reach the profit? The FAQs for this does an (understandably) limited job of explaining the overarching strategy.

          • +7

            @xrailgun: to broden them

        • Do you cancel it with JB Hi fi or Telstra?

          • +1

@Lastronin: Go on the Telstra app chat.
            Say signed up by mistake
            Haven't used the Sim

    • +1

you can cancel it on day one and pay $765, then you ring up and get your $99 back for your first month, not guaranteed but easy enough if you are nice

      • Exactly. look at the last 5 or 10 deals the same at JB, nothing new.

  • +8

Google offers one year of the Google One AI Premium plan for new Pixel 9 Pro Fold owners. After I signed up, they refunded me the 10 month fee for the Google One 2TB plan.

    • That's true I heard. But can I check with you if you still get to have the family benefits with an AI plan? Because my current 2tb storage plan is shared with my family members. Don't want to lose out on that

      • +2

You should be able to get it if you're the family manager and can share with family. "Should" :)

      • +1

Yes, I still have all the benefits. The only thing is, I'm not sure why I didn't get the 10% store credit when I made a purchase during the first month.

    • how to claim that

        @despavr
Ok my new report arrived and on Experian no change from similar deal, But on illion it was down 82 points (from 702 down to 620) when it was added (usually fluctuated 0-6 points up or down) and said

"A new enquiry by TELSTRA GROUP LIMITED was added to your report

TELSTRA GROUP LIMITED shared this enquiry

        information with illion".

        This is on clearscore

        • A credit check will be listed on illion. I just checked and can see all applications for credit cards and telco in history. It's a free report if anyone is interested. https://www.creditcheck.illion.com.au/

        • If it affects your credit, its because you are "taking a $800 phone contract" and not because you are cancelling.

You didn't tell us why your score went down.. would your credit score go down if you pay out a phone contract early? No. This is the same case.

          • @despavr: I didn't say my score went down. All i said is its recorded on your credit file.

            • @Duece1995: My fault, i meant to reply to the other user above you

        • my score unaffected and went up if anything, checked on Equifax.
This comes up on every thread, kids should get their parents to buy it if they are worried.

    • +7

Checked my credit reports and I see no evidence of this on mine

    • Ruined for life

    • +4

      No it doesn't lol.

    • smoking that good stuff aye

    • Not true at all. Recently bought a second house after my S25U cancellation and no issues whatso ever with my credit rating going down

      • +1

Not true at all. Recently bought a second house

I'd like to hear from somebody who recently purchased a single store house before I make my mind up.

      • So what your saying is it DID go down? Just what I said in my post. If someone is borderline it COULD make a yes to no. Just want them be aware if that's the case and perhaps check rating before. If it's very good no drama but if borderline perhaps not go ahead as credit check when applying will affect just so slightly.

      • Imagine you cant buy a house because of stupid phone. What an age we are living in.

    • -4

The credit check affected my credit rating. But that's ok to neg. You go ahead and come back here in a few months after check your rating. Why say anything…

      • +1

I checked it now and not even a soft enquiry for my “ cancellations. I used Experian. Where did you check your rating and how much drop did you get?

        • I checked on getcreditscore.com.au . Before I could see both illion and Experian result. It clearly said Telstra credit check and score went down just so slightly. Seems like they changed on their site. Trying to find it again.
          Just Google it otherwise.

    • +1

Are you talking about the act of having credit check being performed

      or

Are you talking about the act of cancelling and having your credit report being affected ?

      • I cancelled same day as getting the plan. Few months ago. Not sure if applying or cancel affected it. But it did. Even just slightly. I check few times a year and when that was on it went down with no other change.

      • +2

They worded it terribly. The phone plan itself will require a credit check which affects your credit rating, not cancelling it.

    • -3

Those people have no way to get a home loan anyway 😂 people who got a good pay job would not bother doing this thing. Such a waste of time.

      • doing a credit check i assume?

        • -1

Sign up and cancel that what I meant but if you think about credit check and make you happy, Sure 😁

    • +1

Ok my new report arrived and on Experian no change from similar deal, But on illion it was down 82 points (from 702 down to 620) when it was added (usually fluctuated 0-6 points up or down) and said

Don't know why so many neg on my post. Next time I won't post anything about it.

  • The $2000 off the current ticketed price of a Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold(referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions available at www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be applied to the purchase price of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold instore after connection approval by Telstra. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term.

ETC still at $800 on Telstra's website if anyone's game enough.

  • +1

Can someone please explain how OzBargainer method would make ~$1060, 60% off RRP$2699.

Is it from cancelling the plan?

    • +7

Its been discussed in many post.

If you cancel straight away you pay
      $99 first payment
      $766 (cancellation - 1 month pro rate)
$195 (because the phone price is now $2195 then - $2000 from the gift card)

      That brings to about $1060

      • Do you walk in and buy the plan then walk out and back in to cancel? Or just tell the cashier want to cancel after you just paid $99

        • +4

Just chat Telstra online and ask them to cancel. Probably worth doing it after 28 days or so just so you get a bit of usage out of the $99 sim plan you paid for instead of cancelling straight away

          • @KiwiBloke: Can you just port out ?

          • +1

@KiwiBloke: Better off to do it straight away and get a refund for the first month's usage as well, and don't even activate/insert the Sim.

Btw the description is wrong, sounds like it's only $195 not ~$1060. $195 is the upfront payment?

If it was only $195 I'd get one for a spare for travelling.
Would still much prefer the smaller 9 Pro though than a fold phone, bit thick and awkward and you'll see a crease.

            • +8

@G-rig: Its getting more and more unlikely to get the initial $99 refunded(from my experience on one of the previous deals)
Also the more people that go on chat to request a refund, the more likely they are to close the ‘loophole’

              • -5

@KiwiBloke: I dunno, I've done it twice. Luck of the draw but usually get good results on the Telstra chat.
Although if you need the data go ahead and use it.

Agree, I'm surprised they haven't fixed the CIS loophole that is consistently taken advantage of, but we all know how much these handsets are marked up with ridiculous RRP and very marginal improvements.

              • +1

                @KiwiBloke:

Also the more people that go on chat to request a refund, the more likely they are to close the ‘loophole’

People have been canceling the plan and getting the $99 first month fee refunded for years, there must be some benefit for JB in keeping this loophole open.

            • @G-rig: they activated and used my sim in store, now did you get them not to use and insert the sim?

              • +1

@Hugh G Rection: You tell them "Don't do that please".

              • @Hugh G Rection: Yes just tell them. It would be activate but doesn't mean you need to even put it in if you are happily using your own number and plan. They always just staple it onto the contract. I don't even open the box in store.

More chance of getting the $99 back if you don't use it at all (and tell them that on the chat), why would you insert it for no point (especially if no intention of keeping the 99/m plan or porting out).

                • @G-rig: ok, i'll give that a try. i did it the past 2 times in 4 years and actually kept my phone and plan. they never asked me they just start opening up the phone and inserted the sim to activate everything. they were doing that to everyone when i was there so i thought that was there normal procedure. good to know, i'll make sure to yell and them and say NOOOOOOO. lol

        • Awkward 😬

  • I think they changed it to $2000 off from $2195 so you can't price match with Amazon AU

  • +3

Camera quality when compared to pro is fairly sub par

    • +2

As someone who has had both the Fold and the Pro, this is true. Its one of the reasons I changed from Fold to Pro XL.

Pros and cons to both obviously, but I missed having an absolutely top tier camera

  • The website said "Get $2000 off… when you switch your number in store to JB Hi-Fi mobile…"

Did anyone try just signing up to a new plan or am I gonna have to get a $2 sim somewhere then transfer? Currently with Belong and saved up like 1TB of data… not that I'm gonna use it up i dont think but want to keep the data if possible.

    • Same as ever other JB deal like this, have a search.
Get an aldi $5 Sim first then switch that number in store, otherwise you'll get less $ off (last time it was $1700 (or $1600?) off not $1800 if you sign up with a new number). Easy.
