For those on E mount the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is excellent my brother has one and the stuff it produces is nuts. Would highly recommend.

Only I am a sad poor RF mount owner, with no version of the lens available even on EF mount 😭

    • Tamron gear been hitting home run for years. Sometimes it’s nice to have Sony/sony though. One of my all time favs is the 1635 f4.

as a sad poor RF mount owner, I stick to RF 24-105 F4 L, you can find one in new condition for $1200 or thereabouts used. for studio work it easily replaces 35mm, 50mm, (75mm), 85mm primes. 24mm a bit too much distortion, 105mm a tiny bit softer, but both are still decent compared to some other zooms out there. it rarely leaves my camera, hasn't happened in months. sometimes I wish I had a faster prime, and when they release 85mm 1.4 L glass I might get one. but then again situations when I think I would need one don't happen that often. plus 24-105L resolves enough detail for my 30mp sensor. they really did what they were doing when they designed that lens. strides ahead of what EF 24-105L were.

what RF camera body and lens are you shooting?

      • I have a r6ii with the ef v1 of that lens, but haven’t used it as much because I have a 70-200 2.8 v1 ef which I really like for the low light performance and zoom range flexibility.

I also have the golden trio of ef primes with an rf 35mm in there as well, but I barely use them because of the annoyance of having to change lens so tbh I might put them up on fb marketplace this week.

But yeah if only the 24-105 f2.8 wasn’t so expensive it’d be so good😭

        • IMO it's not 1996 anymore and R6ii has amazing low light capabilities, so the only reason to have F2.8 as opposed to F4 is shallower DOF, also that 24-105 2.8 is enormous. 70-200 EF 2.8 was huge though! I am not fond of memories of using one.. RF glass is strides ahead, too.

          • @shabaka: It is good but the iso gets so high when on f4 it’s not great. I just wish there was a budget solution like the Tamron 28-75 2.8 on the e mount.

Yeah the 70-200 is a bit hefty! But obviously I can’t really upgrade that to the rf version either because that is very expensive also.

            • @ThatNintendoKid: I had an EF golden trio too, sold it (incl EF adaptor) and got enough money to get 24-105L and another RF lens. the only EF lens I was holding onto for longest was 135 F2L as RF equivalent is so much more expensive. but I shoot more at 35 than 135 now lol so it is gone too. also I am that kind of person, EF glass (even L class, and especially L class lol) with adaptor on RF bodies looks and feels so cheap ass.. RF glass is so much better balanced on RF bodies.

but of course you can do what you're comfortable with, and it will depend on what you shoot and how.

          • @shabaka: Hope I'm not triggering any Sony-Canon war here. May I know what made you stick with R6ii over, for example, A7iv or A7cii? Both those Sony cameras have as good low light performance, as good stabilisation (A7cii in fact is significantly better), more megapixels, cheaper and most importantly a huge lens selection (including excellent third party lenses such as Tamron). I'm genuinely curious…

            • @npnp: not triggering any wars, I don't do that kind of thing and shot every system under the sun, including almost 3 years on Sony a7iii

personally I shoot EOS R, not even R6ii as the other person above.

reason I dropped Sony and went back to Canon (detour via Nikon z6) is ergonomics and colour science. Just prefer Canon output out of all systems, easier to get results I want. and ergonomics are the best.

just put EOS R with battery grip and A7riii with battery grip one next to another and for me it's no contest. A7 uncomfortable to handle and buttons hard to use without looking. plus EOS R has the top screen for instant checking of parameters

I almost went to a7riii recently when there was a good deal, 30mp to 40mp would be a good improvement, but ergonomics put me off.

              • @shabaka: This is so true. Sony systems, despite being smaller and even lighter, are not the most ergonomic. I agree with this even as a long term Sony user (I still have to look at buttons.. lol). But, for me personally, image quality (sharpness), low light performance and stabilisation are the most crucial (even at the sacrifice of ergonomic) hence absolutely can't ditch my Sony A7cii (at least not yet). I love Fuji colours, I love canon ergonomic, but I still find myself constantly coming back to Sony just for above reasons.. Yes, I'm a massive pixel peeper (I don't even know why.. lol)

The RF 24-105mm f/4L is great, I had the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L but i couldn't justify carrying around the extra bulk & weight & sacrificing the reach.

105mm f/4 provides slightly more background compression than 70 f/2.8 too.

Also 105mm f/4 lens gives 2¼ times as many pixels as cropping the 70mm f/2.8 lens to the same field of view.

I prefer the versatility of the 24-105

        • I mean unless it is leaps and bounds better than the ef v1 of the lens I really miss the lowlight performance and the bokeh you can get without zooming in 😭

    • 100% agree, i almost exclusively use this lense. its just so good in so many situations

    • I was killing myself choosing between this and the tamron. In the end I took the Sony for the wider end because of video crop when choosing dynamic stabilisation and 4k60 as well

      • You also get breathing compensation with Sony bodies. Third party lenses don’t
        have this feature.

    • Canon do sell an RF STM version 28-70 f2.8, around $1600.

      • Wow I had absolutely no idea that came out! Very intriguing… still tremendously more expensive than the tamron but at least this lens seems half achievable to actually buy as opposed to the others which are $3k+

    • First time buying a camera.. i want to shoot concerts and fansigns… sometimes 5 metres or sometimes up to 30 metres away from the subject. Don't really care about the background too much..

IDK what body i should looking at

but i've been told either 70-200mm or 100-400mm

      with f/2.8 or f/4 variable ?

      • 70-200mm 2.8 is probably your way to go imo. 2.8 aperture will definitely be very helpful with concerts as most are in the dark. And if you run into issues with length you can always by an extender as well. Then maybe chuck in a 50mm 1.8 for cheap close up shots if you can get that close and you're set.

As for camera body, its really up to you I suggest going to youtube and seeing what you prefer in a bunch of comparison videos. I'd recommend either Canon or Sony as you can get cheaper third party lenses (with an adapter for canon :/). The canon R8 is really good if you can afford it.

Considering it’s F/4 I’d probably get a Tamron or Sigma for a better aperture 😔

    • +1

Honestly agree, F4 can be good for many outdoor scenarios but even today it's still more limiting than I'd like when there are F2.8 options that are both affordable and not too large to carry. The extra 4mm at the wide end doesn't quite make up for the loss of aperture.

There's also AMEX $50 cashback if you get a price match at Sony and buy from there, free delivery too, and potential $20 CR.

They got smarter, price matched cart only valid for 24 hours now. People used to keep it for weeks and months waiting for better price or higher CR.

  • Great lens. Owned it since launch and my most used lens. Probably paid around $1400ish which was a good deal back then so this is a fantastic price. Maybe ATL? For me I really wanted the 4mm on the wide end which is around an extra 10 degrees FOV. I find the F4 to be fine on a modern FF for the style of photography I mostly do. I carry a fast prime for low light. The optics are great (even used it for some astro as a last resort and was pleasantly surprised).

    Will it fit iPhone 15?

Lenses like this make me consider dumping all my X mount gear.

Moderns zooms are narrowing the gap between primes. Even though Fuji offers offer modern alternatives at similar focal lengths; you can't get around the benefits of lenses designed for larger FF sensors. They are often sharper, have less aberrations, distortion and are slightly faster. Its just simple physics.

With higher quality compact zoom alternatives the benefits of APS-C (weight / size) really start to fall apart IMHO.

    • I sold my Sony APS-C and M43 and went FF a few years ago. Very happy with the decision.

    • I've been doing research on fuji cams because I was intrigued by the film Sims. It's weird that they have aps-c from budget to pro level but then jump right into medium format.

Some of the xf lenses are as big as ff lenses though.

      • They know they can't compete in FF, and they're absolutely right - it's super saturated atm.

Some of the xf lenses are as big as ff lenses though.

other than zooms they're all nice, compact and light tbh.

    • you have a point, but i've never once wished that my XF lenses were sharper.

For the price, XF lenses are amazing - 23/35/50 F2 "Fujicrons" are small, light and so much fun to use. Then you have 23mm and 33mm LM WR if you are willing to spend a bit more. And they're not that much bigger either.

Some older lenses are even better if you don't mind the quirks - notably the 35mm F1.4R, 16mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2R. 16mm F1.4 has by far the best bokeh i've ever seen, anywhere, which is super rare on a wide angle.

  • Price matched at official Sony store yesterday, stacked with 10% cash back from Cashrewards, brought it down to $899~ that’s a bargain!

    • How sure are you on that? The 10% cash rewards wasn't being approved after the price match last time I bought… unless they changed it again?

    • T&Cs:

Cashback is ineligible on the following:

Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts.

However, there's an Amex/Sony $50 cash back atm.

    • My price match got rejected reason being it falls under an exclusion. Did you do it via chat?
