If done correctly and you do the opt out of Telstra deal, it’s $900 for the latest iPhone 16, off ends tomorrow.
So basically the Telstra CSR doesn't know the reason and seems to indicate it was credit check company not returning high enough score for some reason. It probably doesn't hurt to try to get one of those free credit check reports to see if anything weird got recorded by accident.
Existing postpaid customers do get a slight better version of this deal (my table B was based on real existing customers' experience). Had you not encountered that weird credit check fail rubbish, the process for an existing customer would have been faster (JB no needing to charge that $99). If you do decide to cancel your current postpaid plan, you probably want to use up your Telstra Plus points.
