    • You'll probably get more value giving it in to a CeX than to Jb, but I guess it depends how close CeX stores are to you

      https://au.webuy.com/sell/product-detail?id=SAPPI12P128GGRUN…

They are pretty painless to deal with compared to Jb hi fi

      • mobil guru much better trade in value than cex, e.g mobile guru iPhone 15 128gb $800, cex is offering $561 cash or $612 credit

        • Good to know! Have you tried them out? What's your experience with them in terms of how nitpicky they are and how smooth the returns process is?

          • +1

@Ibz: Have used them about 5 times, most recent few weeks ago, I’d rate them 10/10, once they receive n approve it payment is usually made within 24hrs, haven’t had a issue with rating as the quality of my trade ins they’ve all been in mint condition, but worst case is if they reject the condition the next amount is good condition which is usual only a small amount less, they also let you reject the lower amount & will send the phone back for $10 shipping fee, hard to fault them & so much easier than dealing with low ballers on fb or gumtree, others I haven’t used are Mobil monster, reebelo, oz Mobiles all have pretty good trade in values

            • +3

@RogueWolf: I’ve used Mobile Monster twice and I don’t recommend them. If you choose to receive payment via PayPal, they charge a service fee unlike Mobile Guru, which doesn’t.
With Mobile Monster, I received my payment 10 days after they got the phone. In contrast, Mobile Guru sent my payment the next day the first time I used them, and within 3 days the second time.

The only reason I used Mobile Monster a second time was because they sent me a $35 bonus code to apply on top of the phone’s value. Although the code was accepted, the final price didn’t change. I contacted them twice, and both times they replied saying the code had been applied and the money would be added. I told them I had already received the payment, but they still gave me the same response and never sent the bonus.
Because of that experience, I’ll never use Mobile Monster again.

              • +1

@jimojr: good to know, will stick with guru, they seem to be doing everything right, so no need to try others

Some facts from today when I signed up.

There's no need to port a number. The fee is definitely $800.

      • +1

Can't you just get a new number with the plan?

        • +1

Yes, you can. This person has mentioned two pretty obvious facts that goes without saying. Comment unpublished.

  • the $99 dollar plan comes with $1100 gift card according to the website, is there anywhere we can get the other $300?

  • I switched to JB Mobile network (powered by telstra ) from vodafone using the similar deal a month back. I feel the network is very bad, internet speed is poor in comparison to Vodafone although it shows 5g. I have been with JB Mobile in past and i experienced a very good network and 5g speed as we expect from Telstra. But this time is very disappointing. I will switch back to Vodafone once iPhone 17 series would be launched. Somehow i feel its not the same level of Telstra network as it used to be.

    • +1

It's full coverage of Telstra, if you're having issues with the network then it's just your area, Telstra is consistently good. Like myself personally i'm with optus as it's the best in my area, telstra is atrocious and vodafone is unusable. I'd personally be with telstra if my area was better but it's not

        Thank you.

    • All flagships are always sim unlocked.

  • Lots of people seem to be “rocking” iPhones in this thread.

I’m still rocking my refurbished 2022 SE.

See you all tomorrow. Posting this will drain my battery.

    • Information overload. Too much for my 2 brain cells. Still upvote you for info

      • If you are into an iPhone 16, look at the total price, see if it is worth your trouble.

However, do bear in mind the all time low price so far is ~$250 less than the total price.

    • +1

If the phone's over $1k, wouldn't you strictly have to redeclare on reentry into Australia?

      • -2

Yes, but I assume there are OZBers buying for their friends & relatives overseas as gifts 😉.

        • +1

I mean you still technically risk being caught on reentry.

If we're advising the dodgy here, why not include an aggressive depreciation schedule on your first year of phone.

          • @blighst: The original table I based my tables on had that information. I was too lazy to remove that info. It's hard to cater for everything (different discount gift card rates, lowest current prices for price match, depreciation is technically dependent on the date of purchase).

The tables are there to get a rough idea. I am not responsible for other OZBers' actions.

      • +3

Nothing like a bit of tax fraud to increase the bargain!

    • +1

Can we pay the termination fee with JB Hi-Fi gift cards?

    • If you decide to keep the mobile plan for say 4 months - 4 x$99 does the $800 gets deducted of this or you still need to pay $800 on top of it?

  • +2

I still have an iPhone 12 mini. Battery is pathetic now.

    • -3

Sorry but who buys a mini phone expecting decent battery? That's literally the intended tradeoff.

      • I'm sure the battery life was decent when it was new, and any four year old phone will reach the same fate.

      • My even smaller nokia 3310 used to go for days on one charge.

      • I never expected a decent battery - compared to other flagship phones. The battery is pathetic compared to new. I loathe large phones; they're cumbersome to hold and scroll with one hand, plus they're uncomfortable in pockets. I will happily replace the battery and get another few years out of it unless they bring out another mini.

    • +1

I'm rocking a 13 mini, will hold onto it until its dust if they don't bring back something a similar size.
Battery is getting replaced at Apple tomorrow which should give it a new wind beneath its wings.

      • +1

Bonus points if you dance out of the store singing that.

      • What is the quote? $150?

    • Get it replaced.

  • +3

Will JB price match hub by triforce or costco?

    • +1

For price matching Costco, it's staff dependent. My relative couldn't get it done, but a few OZBers managed to price match Costco.

    • +3

I was successful price matching triforce this morning.

      • Thanks mate, I've also done price match today

  • Just realised this is a port-in only deal, I know OP has mentioned using ALDI sim, but wondering could Amaysim/Vodafone $2 sim also work, too? I can get them in OW I believe.

    • +1

Yes they can be used, check comments earlier in the thread

  • Wondering whats the best way to get 3 of these deals, myself, wifey and mum. I just renewed yearly plan for all three sims so is buying 3 different Aldi sims the best way?

    • Yes, obviously you don't wanna port in your existing numbers then port out when again you do the cancellations.

  • -2

$99 per month, lol you'd have to be a sucker to pay that for a mobile plan any day, even with this "deal" lol. $99 per month! Just say it. Hundred bucks a month so you can text your mum and browse a bit of online content that will never add up to 300 gigs lol. JB you've done it again.

    • You’re missing the point. It’s not to stay connected on the plan. Sign up and cancel.

      • -4

I did miss that part, but my point remains. I wasn't taking aim at people here, more JB for trying to push it as a good deal, "minimum cost $2307 over 24 months." That is serious money, and for what… to be in the "new iPhone club"? They haven't even improved the iPhone much since 3 models ago.

Now… to your point. Isn't it a bit grubby? I dunno… finding loopholes to get deals. The "bargain" is only there if you pull a kind of "back of the truck" buyers flip-flop. Each to their own!

        • +1

so which one is it - JB pushing a dodgy deal, or finding a loophole around it is grubby?

        • JB Hi Fi staff generally remind people the maximum cancellation charge is $800. JB Mobile / Telstra staff are quite proficient in doing these early cancellations. Same have been done on flagship Android phones before.

As for $99 monthly fee, for businesses, that might not a big deal (they could fully expense the monthly fees).

From what happened recently, clearly Apple give these big retailers a big margin and don't forget iPhone 17 series phones are coming later this year.

        • Lol, I can 100% assure you Telstra/JB are aware a relatively small number of people are doing this - subscribing and cancelling to get a subsidised iPhone.

If they were that bothered, they could just change the T&Cs to match the increased voucher repayment fee and the "loophole" would be solved

  • Trying to work out if 128GB is realistically enough storage these days…

    • Not really considering the high quality images from these top end phones.

    • It’s not - especially if you have/intend to have kids.

I am moving storage around on a weekly basis :S

Edit: because I take photos/videos of my kid all.the.time.

  • +1

Is it possible to price match and then still get this deal?

I talked to JB HI FI via online chat today saying if they could price match to this:

    https://hub.triforce.com.au/product/iphone-16-pro-256gb-blac…

They indeed did price match it. So can i price match first then get the deal?

    • Yes, price match is a good idea (save additional $230 in your case) because the phone prices for this deal aren't good.

People did price match from essentially the same deal before.

      • Thats nice, i want to do this however the deal ends tomorrow and also i have no idea how this works. Like is there any detailed explanation/step by step guide i can find somewhere. I am new to this and am in need of a phone.

        • +8

          Basically:

          • Get an Aldi $5 prepaid SIM, register it.
          • Go to JB Hi Fi, tell the staff you want this $1400 off iPhone 16 Pro deal and confirm they will price match triforce.
          • Staff will process the port in, perform a credit check. If you have a My Telstra account, the staff will most likely find it and able to use that (a bit faster).
          • Staff will process the first monthly fee ($99) unless you have an active Telstra postpaid plan. If latter, don't let the staff bring forward the billing cycle date.
          • Once porting is done, staff will ask you to go to the counter and pay to the difference and collect the phone.
          • After you have the phone, check it, you then need to decide when you want to terminate the contract.
          • When you are sure you want to terminate the contract, contact either JB Mobile or Telstra (can be via online chat) to cancel the contract.
          • You will receive an invoice for the pro-rata termination fee. You could setup direct debit to let Telstra charge it on the bill due date or pay for it manually on or before the due date.
          • @netsurfer: Thank you very much. I will try it out tomorrow and see!

            • +1

@starlinkfan: Good find on that triforce deal, you'll pretty much match the all time low price so far for that phone.

              • @netsurfer: Haha yeah i saw the post here earlier today, said out of stock on the post but then contacted JB HI FI to see if they could price match.

Also i had a question, Is it this $5 sim? I just get it from in-store correct?

                $5 PAYG Starter Kit
                https://www.aldimobile.com.au/products/payg

Then remove my main sim, put it in my phone, activate it with a new number, then take it out of my phone and then go JB HI FI to continue on?

                • @starlinkfan: That's the one. Yes, buy it in store (Aldi now has a surcharge if you pay by credit card). Aldi SIM is recommended because it is the cheapest SIM which uses Telstra wholesale network. There are cheaper alternatives, but they use Vodafone network so will take a bit longer to port (since Vodafone needs to agree to release the number before Telstra can complete the porting).

If you have a spare phone, I suggest you use that (put the Aldi SIM in it) and bring that with you to JB Hi Fi. Part of the port in process requires getting a verification code via SMS so you need to have the Aldi SIM in a phone to get that code.

                  • @netsurfer: I don’t have a second phone unfortunately, but im guessing it’s okay if I just go to jb with my main sim in, then when a code is asked I just swap it out to retrieve the code?

                    • @starlinkfan: Yes, you can do that if you don't have a spare phone. Also, once you get the JB Mobile SIM (Telstra network) and move your main SIM to the new phone, you probably want to put that JB Mobile SIM in your current phone as there will be some SMS messages which can be handy (including link to JB Mobile site and other information). If you intend to terminate the contract soon after, you most likely want to use JB Mobile site.

Telstra / JB Mobile CSR can terminate the service quite quickly when requested (a lot of people have done it, they know what's going on). If you elect not to get those SMS messages stored on a phone and simply let the new SIM gets terminated, you will lose those SMS messages.

                      • @netsurfer: Okay. I am just going to do this. Go into JB with the Aldi Sim on my current phone. Connect to the free wifi and continue with the purchase. This should guarantee that i receive the SMS’s so I don’t miss out on the important message like account set up and etc. Hence when i go back home I will be able to cancel straight away or will I need to wait a couple of days or so?

I really appreciate your help, thanks!

                        • @starlinkfan: I found on the first day, some information is on JB Mobile site and some information appears on My Telstra site first. If you cancel the contract right after you go back home, the invoice for early termination will appear in your email inbox first. You will then be able to pay for that invoice via My Telstra site (though probably wait a few days before paying for that invoice). The first $99 monthly fee, on the other hand, appears on JB Mobile site.

It's up to you when you want to cancel the service. Some people feel might as well use the service for a few days for that $99.

I would probably put the main SIM back into your phone before driving home. Once home, quickly put the JB Mobile SIM in, complete the JB Mobile account setup. If you have a My Telstra account already, you probably don't have to setup the JB Mobile account (but it is safer if you do, especially if you want that $99 monthly fee invoice). If you don't have a My Telstra account, then I think you really need to setup a JB Mobile account.

                          • @netsurfer: Alright, and the JB Mobile SIM is the aldi sim correct? And then to step up the JB Mobile account I can put it in either phones? Does it matter or does it have to be on the phone purchased from JB (iPhone 16 pro)

                            • @starlinkfan: JB Mobile SIM will take over the phone number of the Aldi SIM.

You can put JB Mobile SIM in your current phone (assuming your current phone is unlocked) or the new phone. New phone is not locked to any network.

                              • @netsurfer: Hey just got the phone, paid $454 (bought a cover and screen protector as well $85), including the price match of $1769.

Now for the last step of terminating the contract/plan of $99 a month. I just go to the JB Mobile app and message them, saying that i want to cancel.

Also another question, is it safe to do it straight away or do i need to wait a couple of days (i dont care about the 300gb), or is it okay to cancel anytime before the next payment date?

                                • +1

@starlinkfan: You can do it straight away.

                                • @starlinkfan: You most likely also been charged $99 (first monthly fee).

You can cancel right away (and maybe try to see if the customer service rep will refund that $99, most reps don't budge on that). It's still a great deal due to the price match. An alternative is to use that 300GB first or cancel before the next bill is due.

                                  • @netsurfer: Yeah, I cancelled straight away because it was my first time doing this and I didn’t know how it actually worked. The rep said that the leftover amount ($766.59) will be deducted within the next 10 days.

After purchasing the phone, I attempted to get another one for my dad using the price match deal. However, I was hesitant to return to the same JB Hi-Fi store, so I visited two different stores. Unfortunately, both stores informed me that they don’t price match with Hub by Triforce, citing reasons such as grey market activities.

I think I got lucky to get the iPhone 16 Pro 256GB for $1,239.59 (not including a case and screen protector). It’s a great deal, but I’m still mad that I only found out about it on the day it ends. I probably could have got another phone for my dad (with the price match included) if I had gone to the first store. Unfortunately, they closed by the time I arrived after being rejected by two different JB stores (for the price match).

Overall, thank you very much for answering my questions late at night, and ensuring that i did this correctly!

  • I've been using iphones since the first one came out, and have definitely noticed a 'slowdown' in the tech leap in the last half decade, making the older phones viable for longer as well. I think Apple got slapped by the EU with a massive fine re software slowing down older phones on purpose to get people to upgrade a few years ago which may have helped in this too.

I am currently using the iphone 14 pro, it is honestly working like a charm, my wife has the 16pro and I barely notice anything different.

    • Maybe she got a dodgy phone, I went from 13 to 15 and they are worlds apart

can the 1400 giftcard applicable for the purchase of renewed iphone 16 ?

    • I don't believe so. The promo doesn't appear at the bottom of the page for the renewed phones. It would have been nice to save a couple hundred for a renewed handset.

  • I went into nearby Jb Hi Fi and mentioned that I am exisitng telstra customer. The jb guy took my exisitng telstra number and then did the credit check and it failed. Not sure why as I dont have any loans or anything. Any ideas on any workarounds? Should ibtry another store or not mention that i am exisitng telstar customer?

it failed because your using an existing telstra number, you need a totally seperate new number..go to aldi buy a $5 sim card and activate it. then go into another jbhifi and use that aldi number to port in.

    • My credit check also failed, so I just brought in my parents to do it. I recommend you do that. They will still port the Aldi number, and for email just use one of yours or you can use ur parents

    • It does not matter whether you mention you're a customer with a postpaid plan or not, once you provide the details, Telstra CRM will find you. Maybe contact Telstra to find out why.

You could have a relative help you get the deal, but existing customers don't need to pay $99 right away so they are able to get a better deal.

      • I tried at another JB store, and didnt mention about being an existing customer. I had a amaysom to port in. Nonetheless based on my id, it did find out that I am an existing customer. The credit check failed again. The JB guys coukdnt really say why, and suggested I go speak to Telstra store. I went to the Telstra store and asked why my credit check faield and they said they cant say much as a store. They suggested I check on the chat option on Telstra App. I did that and the chat rep said to tey after 2 tp 3 months. I was like, that isnt exactly helpful when I am trying to get a new connection today and i dont have any loans and all payments have been on time. The chat telstra app guys mention this time that they are jb hi fi service provider and they cant provide any further details and that I should contact the credit check company. I just gave up and rested any further attempts to get this deal. I will close my exiating telstra connection and move it out to some prepaid connection. Hopefully, there are future deals on iPhone, and I will get it then.

So basically the Telstra CSR doesn't know the reason and seems to indicate it was credit check company not returning high enough score for some reason. It probably doesn't hurt to try to get one of those free credit check reports to see if anything weird got recorded by accident.

Existing postpaid customers do get a slight better version of this deal (my table B was based on real existing customers' experience). Had you not encountered that weird credit check fail rubbish, the process for an existing customer would have been faster (JB no needing to charge that $99). If you do decide to cancel your current postpaid plan, you probably want to use up your Telstra Plus points.

  • Anyone holding out for the iphone 17?
