Seems like a good deal. Got an email about it. Could price beat at Officeworks too I suppose

By your logic nothing is a good deal because you can always pay more to buy something better.

      • +6

Probably wants to turn others off so they can do uncles work and buy all 😀

      • M4 was a bad example, but you can definitely pay a little more to get something much much better.

These M1 laptops stopped production years ago and calendar aging on the batteries mean that you'd probably have a repair bill coming up within a couple of years.

So the total cost of ownership is really, $1k + $279 for a battery replacement https://support.apple.com/en-au/mac/repair

At $1279 TCO, just go find a M2/M3 deal and buy that instead.

        • Entry level Mac at Walmart mate ie still in production

          • @0jay: Apple officially discontinued it in March last year. Walmart must be selling new old stock.

            • -1

@bio: Largest retailer in the US, since March 2024.

At the time it was an exclusive deal, just because it's discontinued via Apple doesn't mean they can't make it available to third parties buying stock for aggressive discount tier.

          • @0jay: Just cause it's being stock by a retailer in the US does not imply components are still in production. No one has any information on Apple's upstream supply chain, even if the laptop was assembled yesterday how do you know how long ago the battery cells were produced and assembled?

What are you even advocating for? You want people to actually spend $1000 and buy this 5 year old tech?

My point is that this tech is old, and could cost the buyer more than what is advertised.

            What is your point?

            • @crankyjay: Largest retailer in the largest retail market in the world. How many units you imagine they might sell given that population and floorspace/exposure?

I'm not advocating for anything, just illustrating some of the false assertions that're slung around on this deal.

              • @0jay: Walmart sold 0 macs until 2024 March last year.

                https://9to5mac.com/2024/03/16/walmart-m1-macbook-air-launch…

There is ambiguity as to where these M1 stock came from, people are guessing that they are very old stock sourced from other suppliers.

I used to live in the US, and I can tell you for a fact that people do not generally go to Walmart to buy Apple products.

                • @crankyjay:

ow do you know how long ago the battery cells were produced and assembled?

So we should have the same concern about battery replacements too I guess, huh?

people are guessing that they are very old stock sourced from other suppliers.

People are guessing, a time honored source for fact checkers since the world was a pup

very old stock sourced from other suppliers

                  oh…

These aren’t refurbs, or leftover stock (Apple hasn’t kept excess stock in inventory for bestselling products for decades — keeping inventory low is one of the hallmarks of Apple’s operations in the Cook era).

                  • @0jay: I'm realising now that you are just a very difficult person to reason with.

Have a good day and enjoy your new M1 Macbook Air!

                    • @crankyjay: i've not voted on this deal, occifer dibble.

                      i don't need a new lappie

      • In this case, way more better performance…

        • In this case, way more better performance…

And? Would you pay $5,000 for a laptop because it is 10x faster than a $1K one? Would you pay $25,000 for another one that is 50x faster? Where do you draw the line?

It's all about affordability. If your budget is $1K and you want a MacBook, then this is a deal.

          • @bio: Not sure about $25000 for 50x faster, my line of work doesn't require that.
But I'd pay $500 more for a laptop that is 3,4x faster. Of course everyone needs are different. Good for you if you found your deal.

Not a good deal sorry OP - good post tho.

  • -6

Still a good machine for the price

    • +7

      No it’s not

    • +2

8GB in 2025 is getting a bit ridiculous. And I'm sending this from an 8GB M2 Air.

  • +6

Where have they been hiding these?? I thought the M1 was long gone, other than refurb.

  • +11

Yeahhhh I dunno about this.. M1 airs have been 999 around their prime time pretty often. For this age of machine I'd expect 799 or less at least.

Reminder that although Apple does pretty well for long-term software, we're now looking at 4-5 years+ on this model. And Mx series are much harder to get a linux install on currently still vs their intel counterparts… So when those updates run out it'll be sitting on those last updates til you decide you don't feel 'secure' enough without them I spose?

    • Plus the batteries in these stocks won't be good I guess since they are this old?

      • Yeah not sure tbh, they'll be better than a refurb/used model of the same era, but being sat there with NO regular discharging could be even worse maybe yeah… hard to say!

        • Very true, to even risk with a dead battery, unless this is $499-$599, no way anyone will be this stupid to buy them

          • +2

@kaikor: These are for sale at Walmart, y reckon Walmart are moving old stock too?

The reason Cook got the job (and the reason he's revered in the valley) is because he's a supply chain genius.

Apple do not overproduce and then liquidate to saturate retail (and further to that this model sold very well on release)

          • +1

@kaikor: Apple warranty will cover battery (min 80% health after 1,000 cycles) as well.

    • +3

      M1 & 2 are supported for Asahi

As for batteries these are entry level at Walmart in the US so fair bet they are still being produced (not arguing they are a good buy)

      • As I understand its not 100% perfect right? Like external displays are still an issue last I read though that was a few months ago.

        • +2

It's not feature complete (plus the primary graph driver developer has reportedly quit) but I do think it unlikely the project will stall.

    • Yeah I was aiming to get one for <A$800 in the past 2 years but at this point I don't think it's worth it.

I'll probably aim for a Macbook M4 16gb air or something along those lines for $1k if possible in the near future?

      • That's what I'm waiting for.. Some sick EOFY deal, bringing the M4 closer to the 1k mark.. I'd probably bite at 1.2 immediately, but 1.3k is a strong consideration..

I'd buy an M3 if it was 999 though! Fat chance XD

        • Yeah for sure haha

does the m3 base come with 16gb of ram?

          • @AeymothSky: Still 8 unfortunately. Likely enough for my use if I'm being honest, but would prefer 16gb for sure. For the right price I'd deal with 8gb.

  • +9

    Lol M1 for $1000? Nah.

    • +3

      And 8gb RAM lol

  • -5

I can't imagine what use case you'd have here versus a $300-400 refurbed Ultrabook style machine

    • +6

Why buy a car when you can buy a rusty old unicycle from Market Place?

  • +6

Not really a good deal. 4 years old. first generation silicon. 8gb of ram.

Maybe for $5-600 second hand. At least if you can pay an extra couple hundred for an M2 it has a massive improvement.

  • +3

    Last month the M2 was $999 with 256GB 2022 model …

  • this 8gb is junk.

  • -2

Shockingly bad deal. The new M4s idle above 8GB RAM use straight out of the box. Give this a miss.

  • +2

This is still plenty good as a homework/light browsing machine but at a thousand bucks for a 5 year old chip and 8gb of ram, it's a hard sell

    • Yeah these are fine (performance-wise) as a step up from a school iPad, in situations where a Chromebook is not allowed (school BYOD). But for futureproofing 16GB is a must.

  • +4

Terrible deal at 1k for an almost 5 year old machine; the M3 16G version was recently on sale for $1199 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/905105

    • Gotta love costco for their apple discounts. Officeworks must hate it, though.

      • Generally, can you get OW to pricematch Costco if you don't have a costco membership?

        • +1

          I believe they do now!

        • +1

Yes that's what I'm referring to. Don't even need the Costco membership.

  • +1

No Deaaaal. Not enough bang for tha bucky buck. $999 too much in twentah twentah fihhhh.

  • it's M1, 3 gen behind right?
