When I click on the link, there is a picture with the gift card and stores listed on the card. However there are several stores listed here but not on the gift card photo. Is the current listing correct eg. lululemon and puma listed above on the ultimate her card but is not on the gift card photo.

The source of truth for participating retailers is the Ultimate gift card website, not Giftz.com.au.1 This is outlined in the Ultimate gift card terms and conditions:

      1. The Card can only be used for purchases of goods and services, at participating merchants in Australia (which excludes cash and cash equivalent transactions at ATMs over the counter at Financial Institutions and merchants and merchant groups who elect not to accept prepaid gift cards). You acknowledge and agree that participating merchants may change from time to time for reasons beyond our control or where required by law. For a full and updated list of participating merchants please visit our website ultimategiftcards.com.au.

If you go to the Ultimate Her gift card webpage on ultimategiftcards.com.au, it will show the lululemon and Puma logos (as well as how lululemon and Puma accept them).

Conversely, the image Giftz.com.au uses for the Ultimate Eats gift card has the Mad Mex logo on there, but if you go to the Ultimate Eats gift card webpage on ultimategiftcards.com.au, it does not show the Mad Mex logo. Additionally, if you go to the Help & FAQ page on the same website, the first FAQ says that Mad Mex no longer participates in the Ultimate gift card scheme.2

      1. The participating retailers listed in the deal description are sourced directly from ultimategiftcards.com.au, and I last checked that website a couple of hours ago.

      2. I have already contacted Blackhawk Network - the Ultimate gift card scheme owner and the operator of Giftz.com.au - to get them to update that image, because it is admittedly misleading to still have the Mad Mex logo on there…

FYI, just found out that CommBank Credit Cards treat purchases through giftz.com.au as a cash advance so don't use that as a payment method if you have one. Would have been nice to know before I purchased but I'll know for future. I use plenty of other platforms for gift cards and none do a cash advance. At least it's a 10% discount so I won't lose out too much with the cash advance fees/interest seeing I paid it back straight away.

    • How do you know it treats it like that?

      • There's no way to tell until you make the purchase I think. I've bought gift cards through plenty of other places and it's never been a cash advance, CommBank were less than helpful through their chat which I don't usually find. You can block cash advances through ATMs via the card settings in the app, however there is no way to block cash advances for purchases which I find to be ridiculous.

If it had blocked the transaction as a cash advance, then I would have known and not gone ahead with the purchase. From what I gather from the CommBank agent if the merchant checks the transaction with the bank before processing then I think you might get a warning that it's a cash advance, if they don't, which obviously happened in this case, you just get charged and you can't do anything about it as it's a gift card purchase so you can't cancel the order.

They said if you transfer the amount onto your card then that should stop you being charged the interest on it but I'll have to wait and see once the transaction clears and the fees and interest are charged for it. It's $4.00 or 3% which no doubt they charge the higher amount for the fee then whatever the exorbitant interest rate is.

From what I gather the Essentials and Neo cards don't actually allow a cash advance so you can't get stung. It should be an option on all credit cards to block them in my opinion.

  • I enjoy churning these cards all day long.

  • Nothing redeemable at The Good Guys?

  • You can't use these if the gift card doesn't cover the entire item online, apparently - what a poorly designed system.

That is unfortunately one of the shortcomings of running a gift card scheme on the Visa network.

Depending on the merchant, you may be able to get around this limitation by:

    • As WookieMonster points out, the best way is to redeem the cards for store gift cards and use those as there is generally a high or no limit to using gift cards but if you use it as a normal credit/debit card transaction then you can only use 1. If you have to buy something that's $450 for example and you have 5 x $100 gift cards then redeem 4 of them for $100 gift cards for the specific merchant and then with the last one either redeem it for a $50 gift card or just use it as a normal credit card payment to pay the remaining amount.

The annoying thing I'm finding with the cards is when you use it for multiple purchases and then you get down to like $0.20 or $1.74 left on the cards which you can only really use in store somewhere that accepts the cards and are willing to split your payment into small amounts so you can use up the cards. A lot of the gift card exchanges are in whole amounts too like $25, $50, $100 etc. so sometimes you may need to pay a small amount with your normal card otherwise you end up with a merchant gift card for a small amount. The savings are worth it at the end of the day though.

  • For those thinking (like me) that this looked like a dodgy website I then saw their “about us”!

“giftz.com.au is the official website for popular gift card destinations operated by Blackhawk Network Holdings, Inc. the world’s leading gift card company.”
