        Advice.

    • +2

Ozbargain because the comments sections always brighten up my day.

Like all subscriptions, it depends how much you use it and what value you personally get. There's no single answer to this.

Do you spend more than $4 a month on shipping from OnePass stores, or does it add a level of convenience to your life that's worth $4 (although there's also regular deals on that)? Then pay for it. If not, don't pay for it. It's that simple.

I pay for Youtube Premium family because I originally signed up when it was cheaper, I use it mostly for youtube music and I'd rather keep paying for it than migrate my elderly family members on my account to something different. Does that mean everyone should pay for it? No.

    • +19

"Like all subscriptions, it depends how much you use it and what value you personally get. There's no single answer to this."

This is the one answer for all

      • Well, some subscriptions can be shared between family/friends even if not intended. Prime delivers to all and OnePass covers a wide variety of goods for many generations. Streaming sites do like to crack down on sharing though…

  • +11

YouTube premium family is great value, when split 5 ways with Indian payment method.

Everyplate has been a consistent subscription too, maybe 1.5x the price of buying ingredients from supermarket, but convenience is worth it. Saves on takeout and forces us to eat a bit healthier.

Uber One is also worth it for us, although I've barely paid for it. Save enough from ride discounts and random uber eats promos (like Petbarn $40 off) to cover its cost.

The Coles subscription where you pay $7/month to get 10% off once a month is an easy saving of $20/month for our big restock shop

    • What is the Coles subscription one? That is my main supermarket.

    • +4

No need for YT Prem, just us an adblocker (uBlock Origin) for any web browser, Revanced for YT on phone and SmartTube for TV to avoid all ads, sponsors etc..

      • +9

YT premium also includes YT music though, for me the lack of YT ads is a bonus as only really watch on PC and have an adblocker there.

      • +22

We have 5 family members plus myself using it, on at least 15 different devices between us, I'd be playing non-stop tech support every single time there's an issue, and my time is worth more than that.

Plus having YT Music is pretty handy, would be paying for Spotify otherwise.

        • -5

I get the tech support thing - however what I have mentioned is really set and forget.

Spotify premium can also be achieved for free via ReVanced, but that is deffo not set and forget and has issues over time.

          Just fyi, all g :)

      • +2

Honestly just don't rate revanced. It's nothing like YouTube premium. I tried for a month and it was just a frustrating experience

    • +2

life is too short to be watching ads

Costco – Is the $65/year membership worth it if you only shop a few times a year?

you're better off getting the odd gift card IMO.. I go like twice a year, and i just get people who have a membership to get me a $20 gift card whenever they go and i use that to get in. Now you have to go to the front desk and get a temporary pass thing, but that takes a couple of minutes

    • Same here. Tried membership, didn't use it enough to justify it.
Gift cards are the way…. still haven't used it ehehe

    • +1

and you can pay the rest of the amount by card/cash on the register?

      • +8

Yep. If you talk to them while you’re paying, they often forget to use the gift card and you can re-use it

        • Do they need to scan it first or anything? If so, do they just hand it back after not using the balance?

    • +1

Oh nice. I was going to say that Costco would be the only one on the list that I would even consider, but now it's absolutely subscription-free for me. (Other than phone and internet.)

    • It is heavily dependent on how much you shop at Costco from a dollar value perspective. We have a chest freezer (and 3 spare fridges) to make the most of it as well, and shop for ourselves and our in-laws.

We typically do enough shopping where the rewards pay for the Gold Executive membership fees and then some.

    What’s Actually Worth the Money

One that benfits you the most based on time and money.

ShopBack/Cashrewards – Anyone here saved heaps through cashback

    That just a free subscription.

    • They aren't subscriptions

  • +16

I subscribe to water and electricity. It probably pays for itself through comfort and convenience and maintaining me being alive but it still feels like a rip!

    • +5

We also pay for politicians retirements as well as comfort with our power bill.

    • Don't forget increasing council rate and reducing bin size, wtf

  • +4

Amazon Prime depending on your circumstances. I use Prime Video a bit. I'll often find things I need on sale on Amazon that I've already been looking for, cheaper than I can find elsewhere and get free shipping. I keep an eye out for deals like subscribe and save oat milk in bulk and buy 12/24 of those cheaper than I can get anywhere else.

Costco I share with family, so split the cost in half. I have a Costco Fuel closeby to my regular commute and it's often the cheapest fuel in Metro. I can't say I'm getting the best value out of the Costco membership though, I don't often shop in there.

    • +6

Prime I have had for years - definitely worth it, best example I can think of personally.

My free library card gives me access to:

Overdrive/Libby - Magazine subscriptions and ebooks
BorrowBox - Popular books for adults, teens, and kids in eBook and eAudiobook

There is also a bunch of other things I haven't setup access for like Storybox Hub and Freegal

    • +4

Underrated - Brimbank library has given me heaps of value over the years - especially with a little one at home. Books, games, library activity times.

      • +9

Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card

        • +7

Don't forget Kanopy! Great streaming service with heaps of content completely free with your library membership.

      • some libraries have subscriptions to beamafilm streaming free with your library membership

  • Spotify on family plan

    • +1

don't forget to pick up google play gift cards at 10% off to pay for this!

      • Where??

  • +3
    • Prime
    • eBay Plus
    • Everyday Rewards

That would be the 3 that I use the both and save me money

I have Spotify Family and YouTube Premium, both because I had the ads.

    • Could you please share why you think ebay plus is worth it?
I've got a years worth, and can't seem to find things worth buying that warrant having ebay plus

  • +1

Amazon Prime – Is the free shipping, Prime Day access, and streaming worth the $79/year?

I use this quite a bit, my mum uses the streaming a little, but considering I buy things for family members its worth for me.

OnePass – Free delivery at Kmart, Target, Bunnings, and Priceline for $4/month – good deal or meh?

For me this was one where it was sort of worth it just because it saved me exactly the amount a year is. But other then that I hate it. Ever since applying I was just getting ads, ads, ads to my email. Made me feel like I just paid to get spammed.

ShopBack/Cashrewards – Anyone here saved heaps through cashback?

I used to save more but I feel now there is so much hassle just to be told you don't get the cashback because of some arbitary rule. Many times your required to turn off adblock, and its getting to the point I'd rather not.

My Muscle Chef was one I used for a while that I didn't mind. Nowhere near as good as shops but if your single and hate cooking the meals are alright and I used to get shopback + ref codes ocasionally making me save time/money.

Healthcare Insurance if your making over x amount that you start paying that fee. Also because most of them include $x off gift cards of some sort.

Union fees depending on the type of job you have might be worth to you?

My favourite underated one? Library Card free books, free ebooks, can even borrow video games at some of them and even book rooms and apps (I get mango languages for free).

    • +2

At my library, you can borrow toys, dvds, cds and magazines. I've had a library card for over 50 years. When I moved into a new council area when I bought my house, the first thing I did was join the library.

  • This question is way too specific and contextual.

For me most subscriptions are not worthwhile. I find Shopback is good (easily has given me $500+ value) for example. Some will say Playstation Plus is amazing for free games, others will say it's shit.

Same with any streaming service, Prime Etc. I think they're all a waste myself as I don't order much and just download anything I want to watch. But for others it's crucial.

Same with spotify/YouTube music. Can just get a free premium version of both on Android. But others here are posting them as great value and paying for them. To each their own.

  • Youtube Premium - I use YT heaps and definitely get value from it.

Bitwarden - I have family set up and for $40usd per year, again, great value. Having shared vaults (collections) with family members is a quality of life improvement when somebody says "I can't remember my password".

    Zwift - Again, used heaps.

    • +1

Dont need prem Bitwarden for a shared vault. Wife and I use a basic account with a joint vault

    • Brave browser

  • +13

NBN subscription. Allows me to have free access to all tv shows, movies and live sports.

    • +6

🏴‍☠️ - I like your style. Since Netflix added advertising or "Premium" I have gone back to buying hard drives.

  • +1

Basic extras insurance. If like me you need prescription eyewear, regular dental work, and the occasional physiotherapy, it's good value. I use Qantas Assure and earn heaps of points with their fitness app as well.

  • ChatGPT is worth it if you need it for work. A few advantages over the free version that are actually useful for my work.

Amazon Prime definitely worth it for free shipping when things are on sale. Not worth it if you're mainly subscribing for Prime Video in my opinion, because there are so few quality new shows/movies on there nowadays.

Netflix is worth it for me.

Apple TV+, only need to subscribe for 2 or 3 months per year, because it's slow to release new shows. Apple Music is pretty good, but probably not worth it since I can listen to Prime Music for free.

Playstation Plus not really worth it, but I'm addicted to Skyrim so not sure what I'll do when the subscription ends. Maybe I'll just buy Skyrim rather than renew PS Plus.

Thinking about trying PC Gamepass for a month to try some of the newly released games (AC Shadows, Expedition 33 and Oblivion).

  • I have Apple music, Nothing like having my whole CD library online from itunes. Probably have that until I die.
    Gym membership.
    Amazon Prime.
Costco- Think is worth it of you get fuel but otherwise not so much.
Kayo seems to worth it, but who knows now its under different ownership.
Torrentday- throw some pocket change at them when I feel the need, they do cover all my software/Movies/TV shows and e-reader entertainment.

  • +3

Everyday rewards - we more than cover the fee, even with woolies being our secondary grocery store.

OnePass - again spend a fair pit at Bunnings so the flybuys points cover the $20 promo fee pretty quickly.

    • Can you get most things delivered from bunnings or just select stuff?
Like, if you wanted a few pone sleepers delivered, onepass cinder that?

  • Definitely Prime - have saved a small fortune on shipping costs. Not too fussed about OnePass and likely won't renew.
    Kayo is a must.
Coles Plus and Everyday Rewards - two shops per month are discounted that way.
I still have a subscription to a physical newspaper, although only the weekend edition.
    Microsoft Office.

    • +1

      Kayo is a must.

Depends if you have time for sports 🤨

Everyday Extra actually stressed me out because I don’t do big monthly shopping, so I ended up cancelling that one. OnePass works better for me because of my shopping habit.

None of the streaming services worth it for me, because I could never find the movies I actually wanted to watch (mainly old movies I didn’t get to watch back then).

I’m still keeping my NRMA membership because of that one time I got stuck in a mountain after smokes came out of the car — took them a while to arrive but appreciated that they did.

    • Radiator leak?

      • Nah, overheating

    • +1

      NRMA is a good call.

We have a 2011 Mazda 3 our daughter drives that's been great but developed an issue with the "TCM" that controls the auto gearbox. Very glad we had it as they were able to come out and assist my daughter while I got there using public transport.

Car was driveable but she didn't want to drive it so I drove it home. Error codes identified the issue (cheap eBay scanner I have) but it got worse before I could get it to the transmission place. NRMA came and towed it to the repairer. All fixed and great again now.

$12 a month NRMA membership well spent.

  • +1

    Game Pass Ultimate XBOX.
Amazon Prime - Free shipping and everything comes to your front door.
One Pass - 'cause it was cheap.
Foxtel Go - way better then network TV and only pay $50 monthly, not worth $104 imo.
Door Dash - 2 years free thanks Amazon.

    • +2

Same for Xbox GPU. Turkish GPU has lead me to not really buying any games for a few years, pretty content with the Xbox releases and catalogues. I usually prefer to own, but if I really like a game, I can just buy it off steam/GOG where its cheaper anyways.

  • I think somebody already posted something similar not too long ago

But TCB, CR and SB unpaid subscription are good

Amazon prime and Everyday Extra worth it for me

  • +19

Real Debrid and it's not even close.

    • Heard there have been some recent hiccups around their services. Is that stable now?

      • I admittedly don't use it every day but in about 1.5yrs of use it's been down for like 10 mins for me one time when they had to move servers or something due to that french legal issue.

Put it this way, I've had better stability with it than with Netflix back when I used that.

        • Oh okay thanks for the update. I was referring to this particular incident that I happened to see some time ago in ozb

  • +3

Woolies delivery unlimited. Half price during black friday sales and I get my shopping delivered for about $1.20 a week. I'm only buying what I need and don't end up with the extra crap that I would've impulsively bought, I don't need to deal with crowds and in a supermarket, I'm not using my petrol to drive to the shops and I can sit on the couch in my underwear when doing my "shopping".

It's one of those things that you don't realise how good it is until you actually use it.

  • +2

    Free:

    • Amazon Prime - I just keep signing up for free trials whenever I need to place an order.
    • OnePass - Same strategy, although I use it less often than Prime.
    • AI - Perplexity Pro, ChatGPT Plus, and Gemini Pro. I use all of them quite extensively and would consider paying for at least one of them when the trials expire.
    • Cashback Apps - ShopBack, Cashrewards, and TopCashBack have collectively saved me over $10k.

    Paid:

    • YouTube Premium Family (via India for ~$7/month) - Yes, ad blockers exist, but $7 split between 5 family members is just too cheap to ignore. Plus, it works seamlessly across all devices and platforms, no fiddling required. Also comes with YouTube Music so no need to pay for a separate music streaming subscription.
    • iCloud+ ($1.49/month) - Mainly for extra storage and the ability to create disposable email addresses. Very handy for signing up to free trials.
    • Google One ($5/year via Turkey) - Mainly use it for Google Photos. May pause soon though since the Gemini Pro trial includes 2TB storage for 15 months.
    • Everyday Extra ($35/year from this deal) - We mainly shop at Woolies and have more than recouped the annual fee through the monthly 10% discounts.

    Cancelled/Will cancel:

    • Real Debrid - the idea of paying for piracy just didn't sit right with me. Currently have a Plex+Radarr+Sonarr setup which does the job just fine.
    • PlayStation Plus - I managed to stack a few years with this deal, but I barely touch the PS5 anymore so it's not worth it.
    • New Amazon prime trials just with a new email?

      • It's a bit random, sometimes you just need a new email, sometimes they ask for a phone number as well (which I have an abundance of from all the deals here).

Also if an account is unused for sometime (around 6 months), it becomes eligible for a free trial again so I don't always have to create a new account and can just rotate between them.

    • +3

Suggestion once your AI subs expire.

Switch to openrouter. It's a service that has API access to most models and is pay per use rather than subscription.

You can use it as an "open AI compatible" service in another 3rd party app (depending on your use), or use their "chat" interface, which is basic but does the job.

I went from paying $20/m for a subscription, to having $5-10 worth of credit last multiple months. Just need to top up as needed, and don't have to worry about getting having to spend to make use of subscription.

    • Sheesh that is a handy list of things.

I can't imagine what you have purchased to get cashback of over $10k.

I check for cashback before buying things and I still barely scratch $2k.

    • How are you doing google one via turkey? I was interested in doing the same but thought they had cracked down on people doing it.

      • In app purchase on iOS using a Turkish Apple account.

  • +1

Amazon Prime, much as I hate to pay it, the free delivery does make it workth while.
OnePass - if you can get it at half price or free.
Office 365 - depends on your usage. easy for me as I use the storage which at 6TB is cheap and makes the rest of the suite just a bonus.
icloud -wife needs it, but horrible overpriced for what you get. Less storage and features than Office 365 and a higher price.
Everyday Extras - easily pays for itself and then some. especially if you can change your shopping habits to maximise value.

  • I pay for my family's subscription too so they don't have to resort to sailing by the seas so all the savings from VPN definitely helps.

    • YouTube Premium Family (via Turkey and iOS)
    • Office365 Family (via Turkey and iOS)
    • Netflix (via Turkey gift cards)
    • Amazon Prime
    • iCloud+
    • Crunchyroll

The best value for me are Youtube as my whole family can share and Prime for deliveries.

I cancelled my Creative Cloud subscription as it got too expensive and I don't use it that much anymore. Even the Photography plan is a tad expensive for my usage. Fujifilm SOOC JPEG and simulations are good enough. Disney+ is also cancelled due to cost.

  • prime is decent because of low prices and the free shipping but still barely worth it as shipping is generally (profanity) all and it doesn't work in different countries (even NZ). I prefer qbit+vlc to the video app

They just offered a refund (or free year) 2 months after cancelling because they put ads in prime video during the middle of my subscription.

eBay+ can be similar but once again really depends on if you use it.

I have iCloud 200GB ($4.5pm) and google one ($.5) as im trying to migrate to apple completely but it's proving a bit painful. photos were fine its documents, videos and gmail that don't seem to sync great.

  • Amazon Prime – yea probably is worth it but i dont have it. Prefer free ebay as it can be a dollars cheaper for the same item and free delivery.

OnePass – on sale for $20 a year i get my money back in points. Have used free delivery a few times when im too lazy and not in a rush for the item. Wouldn't pay full price.

ShopBack/Cashrewards – yea made $200+ back in 2 years on free membership.

YouTube Premium family - yes, ad free music and videos. Dont need to mess around with adblockers and deal with alternative apps that could break on tv, mobile &pc…. and then i need to do tech support for my parents. Spotify no. when ad free music is with YouTube.

Woolworths rewards and Coles - yes worth it when on half price sales (Woolworths for $35 a year). Get that money back in ~4 months if you use 10% off on $100 shops. Still save when $70 a year but less.

office 365 family - up to you if you think its worth it. Having office which lots of businesses use and send you documents for is handy. However if you are by yourself you could probably use your work email and install it on your personal pc. Anyway having 1TB onedrive is handy for "backing up" your pc
Google One - yea having Nest devices with a photo frame feature makes photo frames very easy. I want to get rid of it due to have Microsoft 365 above for cloud back ups. However if you do Google reward surveys it can be free.
Google Nest aware cameras - probably not seeing as Eufy is free. but i have too many cameras to cancel it.

  • Netflix Amazon humble bundle

  • +1

What about several only fans accounts

    • Only for vegans!

  • Shopback+ Cashrewards - I have both and have gotten hundreds back from them over the past 5 years. It costs nothing to sign up and every small purchase through them definitely adds up, even if buying gift cards for fuel/groceries or the occasional 10% off at a restuarant. They're super useful when you make big purchases (e.g. furniture, electronics), I've gotten a few hundred dollars back from a $2000 Dell XPS years ago as well as a pair of Rayban Metas.

YT Premium - Does help that I'm paying student pricing, but of all the media platforms I definitely use Youtube the most so it's worth it. Having no ads is a godsend, I use YT Music all the time (due to my more… esoteric musical interests), and it's nice watching channels you truly support bc a Premium viewer gives them more money than a regular one.

Everyday Extra - Got a year's sub for $35 which is fantastic value, since I've easily saved over $100 since November with the monthly 10% off. I consider the doubled points and free products a decent bonus, even if the quality of deals is slowly dwindling. might be a harder sell for me at the proper $70/year, but as long as I can save more than the cost of the sub, I'll stick with it.

  • Amazon Prime - I get it for the free delivery. The prices can be competitive for some items I'd regularly make a run into a supermarket for. Factoring time and fuel, I'd say its pretty worth it. I consider the free games and movies a side bonus. Although the movies are introducing ads which is super frustrating.

Shopback+ - It gives you $5 coupon for a $5 membership monthly. If you use it on the raffle, you get your money back. It's effectively free. Sometimes they give the best cashback out of the 3 major cashback sites. I've gotten thousands back, mostly from flights and hotels.

Cashrewards/Topcashback - Not really subscriptions since they're free, but similarly to Shopback I've gotten thousands back from Topcashback. Cashrewards seems to be the dud for me, but I've used it here and there.

OnePass – To me, a waste of time. I got free membership and intend to cancel it when it expires in a year. Bunnings delivery would be cool, but a lot of stuff is not valid for free shipping. I hardly ever shop at the other stores. Its ben two months and haven't made a single delivery order.

YouTube Premium / Spotify Family Plans – I dont consume content here.

Costco – Although I like costco as a store with its price / quality, I cant justify the membership price since its far away.

  • +1

i have Youtube Premium Lite it's only $9 a month but doesn’t include extras like YouTube Music Premium, video downloads and background play

    • Might look into this. All I want is the ads blocked.

  • OnePass - As long as you get it for $20 and shop semi-frequently at those stores. It's worth it for me to not have to step inside a Kmart and reduce my trips to Bunnings.
Prime - The speedy shipping is worth it for me. Being able to order something and have it 1-2 days later is great, and you probably get a good chunk of money back through (ab)using subscribe and saves. Though I've stopped using Prime Video since they introduced ads, so the value is decreasing.

  • +1

Woolworth Morebile with it's monthly 10% discount shopping offer. I pay $170 annually with roll over data, on crippled Telstra 4G network.

10% on its own isn't much, it may be even worse when the prices can be 20-50% off. So time your purchase properly, the big discounts usually come after the first week after everyone used up their 10% off.

    • Same, I have 3 of these. I believe this plan is grandfathered so don't miss a recharge. The cheapest annual plan is now $230 and doesn't include the 10%.
Believe only the 30day plans include the 10%. Have been on this since launch and remember how difficult it was for a shop to be $150 to make it worthwhile, how times have changed.

  • Youtube Premium and Spotify for me. Use these daily and I don't miss having to play around with Vanced trying to get the app to work for a bit, have it break or shut down not long after and then having to find subsequent workarounds.

  • NordVPN subscription. That can be used for YouTube without ads.

  • Woolworths plus when half price for 35-40 gives 10% off once a month, plus some other minor points perks

1-2 big $500 shops twice a month (Have another 10% discount from pet insurance). $600-$1200 a year in discounts

A subscription to an internet service provider and a healthy appetite for piracy is easily the best value for money in the country. There was a time I was happy to pay for cable, then later I was happy to pay for Netflix. Each time they screw themselves out of a customer and I put my eyepatch back on. Spotify is currently doing ok by me, but it's only a matter of time.

Amazon Prime is a great one to collectivise - you can 'send a gift' to whoever you want, wherever, whenever, with free shipping. Shame you can't decouple it from the video/music/audiobook nonsense, but oh well.

There is zero need for Youtube Premium if you know how ad blockers work, and if you run Android with ReVanced.

  • I'm paying for lotto subscriptions, I know… 😢
