Samsung ML-2164 Mono Laser Printer - $29 @ Harvey Norman

200

Seems like a cheap deal for a nice laser printers.
Laser printers generally have better print quality than inkjet printers.
I might couple this with my $10 HN voucher to get a printer for under $20.

Still doesnt beat the $4.50 each V525w printers from dell though…

make sure you keep your receipt though, my last budget samsung laser broke down within a year. it's now out of warranty as i was too lazy to take it to OW :P

You'll get 1500 pages from a standard toner cartridge, the starter cartridge with the printer might be a bit less. There is not much of a market for cartridges for these machines as they really didnt build up enough of a critical mass. You might find it tough to source some, particularly in a year or two.

    • You can get ink for this printer from MSY. They are quite expensive though, $75 a pop.

      • Starter toner cartridges usually last about 600 pages (at 5% coverage) but at this price it would almost be cheaper to buy a new printer than new toner, that is, if you don't mind throwing away 5kg of plastic when you're done with it.

  • What's the cheapest wifi laser printer you can get out there?

  • Cartridges for this cost around $70-$80 (MLT-D101S), or $120 from Harvey Norman. Might as well buy two printers

    • Incorrect. The cart which comes with the printer (and most lasers) will last about 600 pages, the new cart you buy for $70 is rated for 1500, so it is a line call between new cart or new printer but if you give two shits about the environment at all you will buy a cart (or have the starter refilled).

        $29 for 600 pages = 4.8 cents per page
        $70 for 1500 pages = 4.6 cents per page

Unless your printer has broken down or suffered enough wear, you don't actually save any money by buying a new printer.

There is the perception of a saving because you have a new unit, but if you're going to dump the old one with no ink, you're still back to having only one printer.

        • Its a bit cheaper for the ink, but you do get a brand new printer you can sell without a cart…

        • Who would buy that…

    • That's a refill/compatible not a genuine toner cart. If you're a true OzBargainer it's cheaper to go to Cartridge World and have them refill your original (or buy a toner refill kit and do it yourself).

  • I bought a similar model a year ago, ML 1865W for ~$60. Mines been pretty good, decent print quality, compact. I'd find not having a wireless connection annoying though.

    • I agree with this post 100%. My ML1865W was purchased on eBay for $77. I paid 7:30PM that night, I had it at 8:00AM that morning, no idea how.

I had a bit of an issue with the paper feeder, but was quickly resolved within a few minutes.

The original toner went for 8 months almost, I was amazed!

Highly recommended printer, as for the WiFi. I never use it.

Once the initial toner runs out they can be good for sledge hammer practice

    • Office Space anyone?

        You have my stapler….

  • way cheaper than a inkjet - I've had the wireless model for18 months faultless cheap easy compact quick - now our HP just sits around on scan/photocopy duties - all prints to cheap Sammy - got fed up with inkjet cartridges!

  • Does Samsung make their own printers or are they rebadged?

  • If only this was the wireless one

  • Awesome deal, if I didn't already have one of their older models (which is pretty much the same size & specs) I'd get one. Laser beats inkjet anyday!

  • Guys, never had a laser printer before, so here's a noob question: Does the laser toner 'dry up' if you don't use the printer for a while? My Dell v525 has already 'run out' (dried) of ink as I only printed 20 pages and didn't print for 1.5months.

    How does the laser compare?

    • Short answer is no and this is a big advantage of laser over injet, no dried up ink, no dead or clogged print heads and the cost per page is about 5c (vs 20c for inkjet). Despite what inkjet ink peddlers will have you believe the print quality of a Laser is as good as inkjet in monochome mode, but move up to a colour model and inkjet still has the edge in quality (and the cost for full colour printing in colour for laser vs inkjet is about the same).

Bottom line: if you print infrequently, don't need colour, have limited money and don't mind the lack of networking this printer is a good option.

    • no dried ink ever - the toner is dry powder

    • Inkjets are a pain as you have discovered. Laser is the only printer.

(it's not a one of clearance either LOLLLLL )

      • Laser toner is more efficient per page. In mono, it looks better and comes out dry.

But for photo printing in colour, it's still far behind.

  • It uses a MLT-D101S cartridge, about $50 delivered from ebay…I've used these cheapo cartridges in my ML-1865 and they work well.

  • I have the WiFi version of this one, it prints fine but the WiFi is really bad and the power cable is loose that you have to wobble it to turn the power back on nearly every time its used.

Won't neg though cos its a good price.
