similar to last deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/905314) but $1 less and I believe an ATL.

Does it matter? It's got faster 5ghz than most wifi 7 routers. So imho that is more useful than 6ghz band.
Maybe there's something I'm missing, I've been trying to work out it lately
Many of those around?
@Randolph Duke: Here are some of the devices that support Wi-Fi 6E:
Smartphones: Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Asus ROG Phone 5s, Asus ZenFone 8
Laptops: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4, Acer Predator Triton 500 SE (PT516-52s), Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-55)
Tablets: Apple iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) and iPad Pro 12.9 inch (6th generation)
Routers: Netgear Nighthawk AX1800, TP-Link Archer AX73, Asus RT-AX89X
Gaming consoles: Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S
Smart TVs: Samsung QN900B, LG OLED C2All of which are backwards compatible
Lol basically non existent
Like what? lol
Lol same energy as the NBN Commissioner saying, "Why do people need faster internet for their Netflix?"
The main value of the 6GHz band is to use as backhaul in a mesh when you can't wire your nodes together.
As you say, there basically aren't any 6GHz only devices and for those that are compatible, they're not using that bandwidth much better than 5.
Wifi 7 has MLO which is useful if you do a lot of file transfer between devices or if you're futureproofing for if Australia ever gets to 10gig internet. On Wifi 6, your max speed is the limit of the 5ghz or 6ghz band. It's good for some speed boosting at further distances.
On WiFi 7 with MLO, you connect to all bands simultaneously for combined bandwidth. currently connecting on my phone at the moment on my dual band wifi 7 router, but I get 688mbps+2882mbps. If you're on a tri-band router with a 2x2 device, you can get 688mbps+2882mbps+2882mbps. Would be handy if you have laptops in far away rooms when windows supports it (24H2 update), instead of being stuck at 300mbps you could possibly connect at 300mbps+300mbps+300mbps to get closer to full speed on a 1gbps plan. You can get the USB adapter's for wifi 7 be6500 on AliExpress from Comcast at the moment for ~$42+GST, less 26% coins discount.
This or flint 2?
If you want to mesh, get the Asus.
If you already own an older Asus router, get this.
Otherwise, Flint2.Do they both support VLANs?
Yes
I'm trying not to mesh, just not sure on range of flint2 tho. My current tp link archer vr900 is just slightly short of range
Only way to find out range is to use it and test it. Every house is built differently and how you position the antennas all affect the range of the WiFi.
I always recommend if you want range to get a mesh system so you are guaranteed the range by placing the satellite units where you need them.
Unless your house has the router in the centre of the house so the signal radiates outwards.
I don't think there are range issues with the flint2 anymore. It is great value for money.
This Asus also has good range.
If you can wait, the flint 3 is due soon.
I have both, range is about the same for me
@367: Thanks
Does flint 2 have dropouts? Especially if you're using vr or PlayStation portal. That's why I'm upgrading
If range is an issue I'll suggest getting a mesh system. But before that check to see that your router add well as the antennas are positioned ideally for maximum range.
I've had firmware issues with Flint 2
Never had any issues with this routerWhat kind of issues? Any show stoppers? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the extra ~$100 for this vs flint 2.
I had both, returned the ASUS. The range is just ridiculous on the flint 2 and it’s been rock solid. Both are very quick. I know there was some firmware issues initially but never had any myself and been rock solid for 9+ months.
beta or stable?
beta
I have 3 google nest wifi to cover my house. Would this give me faster speed and better coverage with the WiFi 6?
I'm not too knowledgeable on this topic
TIA!Only if your devices support it. By the sounds of it you're covering a bit of distance so the speeds will slow further or drop to 2.4 channel. The good thing about Amazon is it's an easy return if it doesn't fulfill your needs.
i migrated from the same nest setup. I have 2 asus routers now in mesh setup. much better coverage and signal strength.
I'm thinking about adding an Asus to my current Asus router for mesh too - are you wireless backhaul? Does it work well with coverage?
wireless backhual worked well, speed was fine but not as good as wired which i have now. I think i doubled my speed switching to wired backhaul. but it depends on your devices and users. wireless should be fine
@dreamshifta: Nice thanks, will have to get electrician in for wired backhaul to pass wire between rooms, always a tough call for speed.
Was just about to pull the trigger on this but my ROG GT11000 is triband so needs a triband router for mesh =(
Difficult to answer your question without knowing more. What speed is your Internet connection? What exact model is the Google nest you're currently using? What Wi-Fi speeds are you currently getting? What version of Wi-Fi do most your current devices support?
I got this 6 months ago for $350 or $370 from the last deal.
What a ripper unit. I get wifi 3 houses up the street when i'm walking the dogs! (weatherboard house that's built like a tent).
buy buy buy
Why not tune it so it only covers the area of your home and not affect your neighbours?
Because he wants to doomscroll on the LAN as fido takes a crap.
Fantastic unit. Has been marked as a flagship device by Asus, probably has the most updates and support out of any of the other units. A great buy if you want long-term support and not spend $$$ on Wifi 7 just yet.
Hey guys, I am still on Wifi 2 router and it's still fast enough for the family still. It's around 15 years old and can do 1080P and up to 8K Youtube videos. What does Wifi 6 bring? Just more speed for maybe 16K videos? I do not have a monitor for 16k videos, only 8K TV's at home we use to watch 8K video on Youtube. Will upgrading my Wifi 2 router to Wifi 6 actually bring any better experience? Plus I think I have not seen any affordable 16K TV's yet so what is the point in upgrading the router for more speed?
Keep dreamin' and you might be able to get a 32K TV instead of a 16K TV.
802.11a (aka Wifi 2) has a max speed of 54 Megabit per second
Youtube's 8k video has a bitrate of 111 Megabit per second.
Youtube's 4K video has a bitrate of 78 Megabit per second.
Youtube's 1080p video has a bitrate of 41 Megabit per second. What you're claiming to be doing isn't possible. You're watching 1 1080p stream at a time at most.
Youtube's 1080p video has a bitrate of 41 Megabit per second.
You should have left this one out, your post was kind of believable until you dropped this whopper.
Admittedly it varies from video to video but you can test it yourself, while the video is playing right click>stats for nerds. Just tried another and it was 38 Megabit per second.
@Davo723: Are you mistaking connection speed for video bitrate? The video will buffer ahead at whatever Youtube is willing to push out, and that will get presented in stats for nerds. I don't think the video bitrate is actually there in the stats for nerds.
1080p Youtube video bitrates are more likely to top out around 10-12mbps. The ones I've looked at are in the 3-6mbps range. Maybe EBR is more, haven't got premium to check it. They do a good job of hiding it, you need to either download the video and look at the video stats in a desktop player or use an extension to see the bitrate.
Can't believe people either have no sense of humour or can't tell this is a joke.
I should have said Wifi 4 router.
I'm not participating in the voting but I don't think it was even remotely funny.
some of the newer standards work better with signals bouncing of walls and doorways , i upgraded because signal wasn’t reaching lounge room TV, but might also be asus had better signal than the tp-link , either way got coverge and no mesh needed. Speed wise, the routers support it but many nic cards and devices don’t aggregate 2.4 and 5ghz, they grab 2.4 or 5 ghz.
Got this unit, OVERKILL for everything.
But if you want to stream COCOMELON, you need at least wifi7
what about baby shark
What about tung tung tung suhor
what about what about
Geez thats no good. far out.
But it reads as there is a firmware update to prevent it from happening, only already compromised devices wont be fixed, unless factory reset.
Probably, but who cares. There's so many layers of swiss cheese to that vulnerability that if you were to be compromised you'd deserve it by simply not having a complex password.
Asus has apparently already addressed this in their firmware updates, so long as you are up to date then there isn't a need to worry.
You can also check if you are already affected in the router settings (Administration > System > SSH - should be off)I'm on the latest merlin released 10 May, I couldn't find any info if this was patched? Merlin's GUI is a little buggy and slow at the moment which sucks but i'll stick with it if it's patched. Any issues if SSH is on set to LAN only?
SSH set to LAN only should be fine. I also couldn't find any info which firmware exactly it was patched
Merlin dev responds confirming it was an old vulnerability that has long been patched. Asus also responded saying they patched something in their latest firmware (from March), which is a bit confusing. Perhaps for other vulnerabilities not mentioned.
@nategasm: Thanks, i'll have a read when their website actually loads up for me (which is rare). I do recall around March there was another malware infecting Asus routers, I think it was related to the AiProtection or AiCloud. When I purchased my router I already had the firmware downloaded and updated it offline, as I was told you could get infected as soon as it was connected to the internet. This new one has me concerned..
@johnnytran: It's basically new malware exploiting an old vulnerability, nothing to be concerned about unless you are running really old firmware.
According to this essay, upgrading the firmware as soon as setting up a new Asus router will eliminate the chance of being attacked.
Anyone got real world experience of the RT-BE86U ?
Is the ASUS RT-BE92U superseding router to this one?
Asus RT-BE86U replaces the RT-AX86U pro.
Asus RT-BE92U has 6GHz and is a step above the RT-BE86U.
As is sometime the case with ASUS, bigger number is not always better. The BE92U is only 2x2 5GHz (compared to 4x4 on BE86U). I'd argue that 4x4 5GHz is more important given that most clients are on that band. The CPU seems to be weaker, no LAGG and some game-specific features as well.
That said, the BE92U would be a great 6GHz AP to serve some 6GHz clients in an AiMesh setup where there's a better router/5GHz AP (like the BE86U itself). Those 2 would make a great setup.
can you use a router as a $300 tax deduction?
no you cannot unless it is only for work purpose. We know it is you ATO
Yes, provided it is used for work purposes, and you reduce the purchase price for any non-business use. I'd be using the same percentage that you use for claiming work- related home internet.
Yes you can if you use the router for example working from home.
What was the ATL for ASUS RT-BE86U?
It was $399 few weeks ago
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/905221$399 was the RT-BE86U ATL so far. It's $433 @ Amazon AU today.
Anyone know how to block YouTube by device on this thing? I can't figure it out.
Do I absolutely need to install Merlin?
- Advanced.
- Firewall.
- URL filter.
- Enable URL filter.
- Click on black list for the filter table type.
- Type in YouTube, click the + and apply.
Can't even find advanced in the app lol
Login using your browser.
Could this router utilise usb tethering using my mobile as fallback ?
Android tethering
I have DSL-AC68U. will it worth it yo upgrade to this one? Will the wifi signal of this router cover my house 350m2 or I better go with mesh system. Thank heaps.
Buy this and then use both with AIMesh
Then should I use the new modem to connect to the nbn box or the old one?
Plug in the RT-AX86U pro router to the nbn box.
how does this compare with https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-RT-AXE7800-Extendable-Subscri…
$40 more for 6e and extra band / extra antenna…Also at an ATL, I went with this one for the 6E and signal strength
Less RAM and weaker processor. OP’s pick is better.
Yeah I cannot find overly enthusiastic reviews and doesn't seem very popular.
Looking at reviews, it can technically reach higher wifi speeds than the AX86U Pro assuming the correct devices/conditions. But the stronger hardware on the AX86U Pro may make it better at handling more clients/connections. I cannot find any evidence of either device having stronger signal strength (More antennas do not mean better signal)
I had this and the flint 2 and retuned it. The flint 2 is better by a long shot and $100 cheaper if on sale.
Will wait for flint2.
GL.iNet GL-MT6000 Flint 2 $207.20 Delivered @ Amazon AU.
Not a bad price however it was $182 two months ago.
Can flint 2 have vlans (both Ethernet and wifi). Also, I’m looking for something that can have inter vlan connection as well.
I heard ax86u pro has vlans, but not sure whether that allows inter-vlan comms.
