I just got rid of an old Netgear M100 and replaced with this. I paid $99 a few weeks a go. This is a great deal. It's a full ASUS router in a portable form factor. Equivalent of an RT-AX3000 less a few ethernet ports. So it can function as a mesh node, mobile tether and all the rest. The only unique software feature seems to be the public WISP mode. Don't believe it can run Merlin though.

Great little flexible device for on the road or for some testing use.

    • The ASUS has 1x WAN and 1x LAN (Gigabit)

    • Minor correction, I've found RAM 512MB / Flash 128MB and Dual-core 1.3GHz SoC for the Go on the Asus website; think what you've got there is for the RT-AX57. Stupid naming -_-

    • I find that what makes the gl.inet the winner here is the openwrt based firmware. Very underrated IMO

      • Yup!… or vice-versa if you are already in the ASUS ecosystem - having one of these handy and you've got a backup AIMesh node in case of other devices failing. My house if full of LIFX - so a fully functional mesh is pretty important.

      • Quad-core CPU is wrong. RT-AX57 Go has a dual-core 1.3GHz SoC.

So can put out a SIM card in it?
Doesn't seem like that from the specs…

    • Nope, but you can use a USB 4G or tether iOS or Android.

      • do you have any recommendations for USB 4G that takes a sim?

        • Netgear M6 Pro / M7 Ultra are the gold standards

  • What is the use case of a portable router like this ? I want to buy it but dont know why ! What a portable router like thus or glinet does that phone tethering cant do ? I have had a case of heavily using an old work phone tethering for 3 people doing work for few days and it was doing a great job just needed to stay powered up

Use wifi or Ethernet as well. You could be at office hooked up to Ethernet, go somewhere abc then hook up to their wifi or public wifi, tether your phone between places. Save draining battery and mobile data, while using security features included vpn etc). Your friends can use it, no need to set new wifi for each device. Also a useful wifi mesh if you are in threats ASUS system.

Is it worth it over tethering? That depends. Maybe not if you are happy with your phone and teetering and don't want to carry around and set up this (needs a point point or USB power).
