The M720Q is special because you get real PCIe slot. Other ones are Lenovo P330/340 and M920Q/X.

Takes Intel 8xxx and 9xxx CPUs. I upgraded mine to 9500T.

You will have to buy PCIe riser 1AJ940 (search in eBay, $30) to install PCIe cards. This baffle is for NICs, I used it for X710-DA2, 2 port SFP+ 10GBe card (Lenovo 00JY942, Dell 0Y5M7N 5N7Y5).
Also works for HP NC365T, 4-port Gigabit Ethernet NIC, plenty on eBay.

Anyway, this is good price, I paid more for my fleet of four in xcp-ng cluster :)

      with PCIe slot?

      • no

      • Genuinely curious in this form factor what would you use the PCIE slot for?

Multi port ethernet card to make this machine a router or proxmox host

          • @buellersdayoff: Why wouldn't you just buy a cheaper machine that already includes dual LAN ?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006445443589.html and there are a gazillion more.

            • @Nom: dual 10gb sfp or 4 port 2.5gbe. Some people have security concerns with the firmware of those mini pc's. The power difference in real world scenarios is neglible as a router. 6 cores are better than 4 in the proxmox equation. Just to name a few reasons why.

            • @Nom: One's a random computer on Aliexpress, the other is from a well-known, reputable manufacturer.

You get what you pay for.

Seen some people use a newer model with a modded single slot 4060 laptop GPU to make a 1L gaming PC

        • YESTON low profile single slot RTX 3050 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDeJmR0SHHE

          • @SmOOvDoGG: But these are bonkers expensive, they cost about $350AUD. Plus $200 for the Micro PC in this deal, and you're at $550 for an old 8th gen machine with a 3050 🤷🤷

You can buy a brand new modern gaming PC with a 12th gen CPU and a 4060 for an extra $100 !! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/903533

            • @Nom: Yes you are correct for the price its expensive, but the question was what could you use this form factor for and this is one option. SFF builds can usually be more expensive than normal ATX builds. However SFF are usually for hobbyist for people who enjoy pushing the limits in producing so much power into smaller forms

    • got a link ? would be interested in this

    • Which cpu would be ideal? There's a few.

I ran one of these with a a 9500T and opnsense (4 port eth card). With the plethora of dual nic tinypcs on the market, this is more hassle than it's worth tbh unless you have a very specific niche use case (4+ network zones, or some other pci card) .

Just find yourself a n95 based Mini pc with dual nic and call it a day.

    • You mean N97?

      • Yeh anything in that range should do it

        N95/n97/n100/305

For the longest time I ran a celeron J3060 and it was fine until I upgraded to faster internet and enabled zenarmor.

Picked up a dell 7070 micro 9500t 16/256 for $220 last week. Adding a 2.5gbe nic using the m.2 slot.

Planning to do a proxmox/opnsense build in a 10" mini rack

Only recommendation I can give you is try and keep them separate.

I did the same as what you're proposing for a long while but everytime I played around and broke proxmox, I couldn't access the internet to investigate.

Now I have a separate little mini pc doing internet duties on bare metal. I treat that as a "production" device and treat it with a bit more caution

      • I've got other services running on my unraid server, so won't have too much on the micro.

It's replacing a larger SFF pfsense box so I can fit it into the 10" rack and also lower power consumption.

Gone up a bit now and need to wait for 20% refurbish code

        • Thanks, will keep an eye on it.

      • Just buy a new machine that already includes 2.5G networking 🤷
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006445443589.html there are a zillion options.

        • didn't see these texhoo options before, they look good too.
I was looking at the topton, CWWK options with 4x ports.

I might still add one to my stack.

QN10 is the only one with dual 2.5Gbe (N100 8/256) is around $250 AUD, less after some aliexpress codes & cashback.

  • Does this take a 2.5” SSD, or is it m.2 only?

8400T is kinda old. I'd aim for something newer for that money imo

Typo in the coupon code. It should be SSLOW /s

  • Install Plex on Docker + PlexPass + NAS = Decent 1080p Transcoding. Go newer gen intel if you want more than 1x 4k transcoding.

I have about 3 of the pcie risers for these I'm not using if anyone wants some. I upgraded to the improved tiny risers with additional m.2 slot.
