nice N150 based mini pc / NAS with 4x 3.5" SATA bays, 2x 2.5GBe NICs, 0GB RAM (add your own DDR4 (much cheaper to buy locally than select 16GB from this vendor, and drives of course).

Perfect for a home NAS - use UnRAID, TrueNAs, Synology (use auxxxilium to install DSM 7.2), whatever you want - could also be used as a desktop for daily email, web browsing, youtube and torrenting.

Yes this can easily run Home Assistant, yes this can easily handle OPNsense and yes it will easily handle video transcoding in Jellyfin (and probably Plex, I don't use Plex so don't know) - hell install Proxmox and then you could run all of them in containers / VMs and just have the one box connected to your NBN handling network security, HA, storage, media streaming etc. (though I'd probably go the extra and buy a 32GB SODIMM from a local vendor, this aliexpress vendor charges nearly $100 AUD for a 16GB SODIMM to be pre-installed, not worth it imo).

CORSAIR Vengeance SODIMM 32GB (1x32GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 Memory for Laptop/Notebooks (Intel 11th Generation Core Processors Support) Black.

        Limited time deal. $86

        • -1

probably.. I cannot guarantee it'll work, which I feel is why it's better to buy locally.. if it doesn't work then it can be returned / exchanged.

          • @gizmomelb: No idea who neg? Either way. That ram worked.

  • the GST is 46. which is wrong. how to update it?

  • is 16G RAM enough or I should go with 32G?
How much SSD should I need to TrunNAS and other containers like Plex,Google photo replacement?
I wants a media center and home photo storage
Probably some lite duty like with different container running

How much SSD would I need?

    • Not much data is stored on the SSD, but the best price point at the moment seems to be 256gb, which is overkill.
I've got 16gb ram, which runs fine, but for futureproofing, it would be worth getting as much as you can.

      • agreed. I've got 16GB RAM in my NAS and barely more than 3GB is ever in use - about 1.4GB of that is just from Jellyfin. When I was running the full ARRS suite (Sonarr, Lidarr, Bazarr and others) RAM usage was 4GB - but then I shut down all of the ARRs except Sonarr, since I never use them. Even if I added Pi-hole, Home Assistant and OPNsense 16GB would still be enough.
If you were wanting to run VMs then yes, go 32GB.

        • I may be wrong hut i heard some raid system need ram more than others maybe btz or something
And people recomend to get x ram based on the hdd capacity you have, for example 1gb ram per xx tb hdd

  • +2

Have exact same unit and have it running TrueNAS for a few months. Very stable.
You can buy an adaptor to convert the wifi slot into another NVMe drive and make it a 6 disks unit.

    • Hello ncdad, the latest (Clear 's) post mentioned

Since this is using an ASMedia ASM1064 controller for drives, TrueNAS isn't recommend due to compatibility issues.

Does it mean this unit can only install unraid not Truenas?

  • +2

Crazy prices, a Jonsbo N3 already costs $229, and the Jonsbo N5 is $329

    More bays but still..

    • I hate buying $200+ cases, reselling a used case in the future in near impossible and throwing them away seems pointless too

  • +1

Is the AMD version worth the extra above this N150 price?

    • +1

general speaking is amd if you need more processing power but intel if need more flexibility with multimedia

    • It's a fair bit more power. I have both CPUs and the AMD is a lot better by every measure except hardware video encoding/transcoding.

  • +3

Much to my surprise, Shopback's current bonus cashback for AliExpress tracked on this. $23 back, even more a bargain!

    • topcashback maybe? 10pct max $30?

  • Perfect timing for me. I had 2x 1515+ synology units die on me recently. They are 5 bay but i can probably recover those drives to 4 bay. I see a lot of people are suggesting auxxxilium to run dsm. Ive never heard of it. Any chance I could install dsm and plug and play the drives from the failed units? Also I wonder if I can use the proprietary ram from the dead units.

    • +2

I asked the same and answer was yes practically once we insrall that os it becomes synology.
I have 1511+ and still going strong…. but mine too weak to run dockers. The ram (the nonsoldered ram) is not proprietary i know because i added crucial ram to mine and its fine

      • Ah thanks a lot for the response! Might pull the trigger on one or two of these!

        • @gizmomelb is the actual user of that o/s

    • +3

yup.. I was previously running DSM 5.2 and built a new system, installed auxxxilium onto a usb stick and set up configuration as a synology SA-6400 (supports all makes and models of synology equipment) then physically moved my drives from the old system to the new system and installed DSM 7.2. Once finished it detected the existing SHR-1 array I had and I could access all the data once again.

      • +2

Worked just as you described, thank you mate! Ended up finding myself a 16gb stick from a dead nuc. Happy days!

        • +1

glad you could recover your data. enjoy! the n100/n150 can handle a lot of dockers and tasks quite easily.

    • Wow, received mine already!

      • That went quick. Ordered one yesterday and already shipped.

  • +1

When will the 6-8 bay be released :)

    • Already released, but it's always sold out.

  • Those of you getting this.. where are you getting your drives, and what capacity are they?

    • +1

      East digital Hong Kong.
Capacity: as big as your wallet allows

    • When I used an old pc as a Nas I've gone with 3x4tb drives. I had one anyway and got 2 from east digital. One failed in a week though so had to pursue a refund and got a replacement from a local retailer instead.

4tb seemed a sweet spot of good storage capacity to price, but also mean a 3 drive array would suffice with room for a 4th drive when the time comes.

  • could also be used as a desktop for daily email, web browsing, youtube and torrenting.

If you want that there's N150 mini PCs for ~$250

  • Hey guys, very new to NAS here. Was recommended synology a couple of times but they are pricier with lower spec hardware.. My use case is media player, photo management currently. Can someone tell me if this would be a better buy compared to synology? What would it be like from a setup and all? Cheers.

    • Chrck.youtube how to install truenas to aoostar or other nas. Synology is much easier to setup.

      • Hello mc, the latest (Clear 's) post mentioned

you can install the synology O/S on any hardware, just google auxxxilium

And how to buy from alibaba? As easy as aliexpress same processes? Wait baba link say n100 not 150

      • +2

Very easy, either chat online or send an enquiry, everything gets recorded online on Alibaba.

Alibaba holds the funds and the seller won't get your money until you tell Alibaba that you've received the item. You can pay by PayPal on Alibaba.

There's not a big difference between N100 & N150 in terms of performance.

        • Wow ok interesting n97 is better

  • So wait… it’s 16GB RAM and a 500GB SSD for 463? How is that not a better deal than buying it without that?

    • Plus gst

    • +2

They'll be RAM and SSD brands you've never heard of and may not have the life expectency of something bought locally imo.

16GB crucial RAM ($55 inc GST) and a 500GB NVME (Patriot, Silicon Power or Crucial - $50-65 inc GST) bought locally from amazon is still cheaper than buying the populated NAS+GST and you know what quality storage you're getting plus local returns if you encounter any issues.

  • Has the price increased? It’s coming out to $468.99 + $46.90 GST/Tax for the No RAM No SSD No OS model.

    • Perhaps got aud. Set as USD in settings on Ali. I find their conversion is much higher. I have set as USD. pay with PayPal which have an ok conversion. If Australian it says AUD $379.50. USD 236.04. using usd it comes to around AUD $364+TAX , so bit cheaper that way.
Still sounds expensive. Sure no ram or OS?

When i put in usd comes to US$ 265.34 around AUD 409

  • Still pretty expensive for what you get

    • +1

      What do you recommend?

    • +1

You probably don't want to go looking at Synology prices then.

    • @motion2082

      • Expandability is hard sell with this one unless you’re happy with 4x drives. RAM and M.2 is limited also.

You could get a mini itx nas board with a n150 for about $300, gives you $100 for a psu/case. If you have old parts lying around it keeps cost down. Jonsbo N3 is about $250 gives you 8 bays for $550 if you have a PSU already

I have an old 3700x with a ATX mobo plus 7 drives atm in a fractal case as a media server but also have a proxmox server on a hp elite prodesk running truenas with a 4 bay N54 passthrough.

Always tempting to buy new parts but building nas with old parts is fun

        • Well.. what if we dont have old prts.. will you still recommend DIY… and im happy with 4 bays…

          • @McMaferMur: If you don't have old parts then enjoy :)

What ever makes you happy at the end of the day

            • @motion2082: ok.. i (and maybe others) was hoping that you can give us more powerful but cheaper alternative (DIY or something like AOOSTAR), without old part, and also in the nice factor like this

  • The seller has requested for additional usd20 after ordered placed as Australia is “very far away”.. anyone encountered this before?

    • I just got hit with the same, except they initially requested $20USD then bumped it to $43USD and suggested I cancel the order. 👀

      • +1

        report to ali?

        • +1

Just contacted. They said to cancel the order and they'd be smacking the seller for being naughty.

          • @iJebus: Was about to report to ali/contact their cust service, but then realised my order was suddenly out for shipping! There’s a tracking num but can’t seem to find any info on it yet.

    • tell the seller that America is even further away and has tariffs - Australia doesn't.

    • I received a similar message asking for $50USD. This was the sellers messages:
"Hello, your address has been set as remote by DHL. Could you change your address ,the postal code starts with 0 1 2 3?
Or pay an additional 50 USD for shipping".
My reply was "My address is set correctly in Aliexpress. My post code in Aliexpress does not appear as "0 1 2 3" as you have stated. I have never had a problem ordering and receiving goods from Aliexpress. I will not pay an additional $50USD for shipping. Please send the product as ordered to the address stored in Aliexpress otherwise I will raise a complaint with Aliexpress."
A minute after sending my message I was offered a refund. I have a choice of two buttons: "Get refund" or "No thanks". The "No thanks" button doesn't seem to work.

      • I think they are asking you to change to a post code that starts with 0, 1, 2 or 3. So if you could just move interstate they'll happily get your item to you. I hear Yuendumu, Northern Territory 0872 is lovely.

        • Cheers. My post code starts with a 6 here in WA. So they are trying to reduce the extra DHL charge for not living in those postcodes they mentioned. That makes sense now. It's funny how NT is OK but SA is not in their list of postcodes. Anyone from SA run into this problem with the seller?

  • Any reason this is expired? Still showing in stock and now working with AUEF33 code from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/910160

    Or am I missing something?

    • probably restock but read above issue

      • I did see issue above. Everyone getting stung though?

Ordered a few hours ago, no message yet. Will update if I get one.

          • +1

@Willowtip: I ordered also, just got "Order shipped" notification.

  • He has posted mine got tracking no as well.

  • Bit the bullet. Just got one too. Lucky as seems like price just went up after i bought it. Got it for total USD 245.34 with tax. Got $20 ali coupon off. Had to double check price didn't increase at checkout. See if 13% TopCashback tracks.
    Edit. TopCashback tracked $30.

    • Got the same price but for some reason, even 15 minutes later, I don’t have an order confirmation. Order showing in PayPal and Ali app though.

      • Mine says package is being prepared on Ali. Think I was lucky. On the invoice I downloaded says USD 322.but PayPal said original. Guess wait to see what seller ask lol. I took screenshot after I paid to be sure. Just ordered a 32gb SODIMM from Amazon. Hopefully it support my spare 4tb nvme. Gonna try it. Otherwise get a 2tb one. Probably use that as unRaid instead of my PC.

        • @Mimeal - what 32gb SODIMM did you go for?

          • +1

@twitch1979: @Twitch Went with this. If doesn't work just send back to Amazon.

            https://amzn.asia/d/aqqoEao

            • +1

@Mikael: @Twitch got it today. That ram worked.

  • +1

Shipped 2 days ago. Who is the tracking number for? Tried iMile, fast horse, Ali. Nothing there or perhaps haven't scanned in their system yet.
Also have anyone tried larger NVME drive? See it's 2tb on site but sometime firmware update fix size Got a spare 4tb that I wanted to use.

    • Order placed on 13th June
Package shipped by seller on 16th
Package collected by carrier (DHL) on 17th
Shipment is scheduled for delivery (SYDNEY - AUSTRALIA) on 19th. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. Seems you will not get correct/trackable tracking number until package is collected by carrier.

      • Thanks. Hopefully you get it tomorrow. Gonna be good to upgrade my old qnap (still keeping as secondary backup) and free up my computer that currently running unRaid. See how much i break when i transfer hdds across. Apparently should be fairly straight forward. Move usb that runs unRaid, drives. Give it a kick and see if it works.
Edit. Lol, just now got shipment on way with DHL Express.

        • Here you go.. from this point onward DHL express is surprisingly fast

          • @harry2015: In Perth. See if it goes east first or on a plane to Perth. No rush. Just gonna be fun to setup and get my computer back.

          • @harry2015: How come they can afford to pay dhl

            • @McMaferMur: Some buyers in this thread reported that seller was asking for extra $$ in messages. Not sure why he decided to send 7kg package via expensive DHL express when the original promised delivery date was around 19th july.

          • @harry2015: Out for delivery today :). Guess gonna be busy rebuilding my unRaid today and hopefully my ram i got for it is compatible.

            • @Mikael: you paid for unraid license?

              • +1

@McMaferMur: Yeah paid one. Gonna use same license, so transfer it across. What I had a quick look is to put same diska across. Plug usb in and boot. Off course disable Nvidia card and so on. Stop containers and not autostart. Think few more steps but see how i go. Mostly media. Got most important things backed up on an old qnap and external hdd. Not too worried if it fails. Which it probably will lol (unleashed licence)

                • +1

@Mikael: Well, that was pretty painless. Booted first go. Had initial issue with network card. Plugged USB ethernet dongle in. Hooked up online. After few minutes found them. Static ip and its up and running.

  • I'm having huge issues getting the transcoder working or even visible to plex.

I had chatgpt summarise what i've tried (because i have a basic understanding of proxmox and linux but have no idea about half the things…

I’m trying to enable Plex hardware transcoding using the Intel integrated GPU (Alder Lake-N) on a Proxmox server. The iGPU drivers (i915) seem to load correctly and the firmware files are in place. I get partial success — when I connect a real monitor, /dev/dri/card0 appears, but crucially the render node /dev/dri/renderD128 does not show up. Without a monitor connected, nothing appears under /dev/dri/ at all.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Installed all relevant Intel firmware blobs manually under /lib/firmware/i915/, including recent Alder Lake and Tiger Lake binaries.

Used kernel boot parameters like i915.force_probe=46d4, i915.enable_guc=3, i915.enable_fbc=1, but also tried removing video=HDMI-A-1:e to avoid disabling outputs.

Verified that the kernel module i915 loads without obvious errors in dmesg.

Confirmed the Proxmox host has /dev/dri/card0 only when a monitor is plugged in, but /dev/dri/renderD128 never appears.

Checked BIOS settings to ensure iGPU is enabled and “headless” or multi-monitor mode is on.

Considered using a dummy HDMI plug to force full GPU initialization.

Still, Plex containers see /dev/dri/card0 (sometimes), but no render node, so hardware transcoding via VAAPI is failing.

If anyone has experience getting full Intel iGPU hardware transcoding working on Proxmox, especially on newer Alder Lake CPUs where render nodes don’t appear unless a monitor is present, your advice would be hugely appreciated!

    • Just had a look at my Plex. Mine also just using CPU. I got unRaid. Found this on Gemini. Gonna look into it tomorrow.

The N150 processor, likely referring to an Intel N150 (part of the Alder Lake-N series), does support Intel Quick Sync Video, which is Intel's hardware acceleration technology for video encoding and decoding. This means you can enable GPU transcoding on your N150 for Plex.
Here's a general guide on how to enable GPU transcoding in Plex, specifically leveraging Intel Quick Sync Video on your N150:
      Prerequisites:
      * Plex Pass Subscription: Hardware-accelerated transcoding is a premium feature of Plex and requires an active Plex Pass subscription. Without it, Plex will default to CPU transcoding.
      * Compatible Operating System: Ensure your operating system (Linux, Windows, etc.) has the necessary drivers for your Intel iGPU (integrated GPU) correctly installed. For Linux-based systems (like Unraid, Docker, etc.), this often involves specific steps to ensure the /dev/dri devices are accessible.
      * Sufficient RAM: While GPU transcoding offloads much of the work, having enough RAM is still beneficial for overall server performance, especially with multiple streams.
Steps to Enable Hardware Acceleration in Plex:
      * Open Plex Web App: Access your Plex Media Server via a web browser (e.g., http://your-plex-ip:32400/web).
      * Navigate to Server Settings:
      * Click on the wrench icon (Settings) in the top right corner.
      * On the left sidebar, under "Settings," click on "Transcoder."
      * Show Advanced Settings: In the top right corner of the Transcoder settings page, click on "Show Advanced" to reveal all options.
      * Enable Hardware Acceleration:
      * Look for the option "Use hardware acceleration when available." Check this box.
      * You may also see an option for "Use hardware-accelerated video encoding." Make sure this is also checked.
      * (Optional) If you have multiple GPUs, there might be a "Hardware transcoding device" option. For an N150, you'll likely leave this on "Auto" or select your Intel iGPU if it appears.
      * Save Changes: Scroll down and click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.
Verification (How to confirm it's working):
After enabling, play a video that requires transcoding (e.g., a high-bitrate 4K video streamed to a device set to a lower quality, or a codec not directly supported by the client). Then, monitor your Plex Dashboard:
      * Open Plex Dashboard: While the video is playing, click on the Activity icon (the graph icon) in the top right corner of the Plex Web App to open the dashboard.
      * Check Transcoding Details: In the "Now Playing" section, locate the active stream. If hardware transcoding is active, you should see "(hw)" next to the video stream details (e.g., "Transcode (hw)").
Important Considerations for N150 (and similar integrated GPUs):
      * Operating System Specifics:
      * Linux (especially Docker/Unraid): If you're running Plex in a Docker container or on a Linux-based NAS OS like Unraid, you'll likely need to pass the /dev/dri devices (your Intel GPU drivers) into the Docker container. This usually involves adding a —device=/dev/dri flag to your Docker run command or setting up a device mapping in your container management interface. You may also need to install specific Intel media drivers on the host OS.
      * Windows: On Windows, as long as your Intel graphics drivers are up-to-date, Plex should generally detect and utilize the hardware acceleration automatically once enabled in the Plex settings.
      * Subtitle Burning: Burning subtitles can sometimes force CPU transcoding, even if hardware acceleration is enabled. If you frequently use subtitles and experience high CPU usage, try disabling subtitle burning or using a client that supports external subtitles.
      * HDR Tone Mapping: If you're streaming 4K HDR content to SDR devices, Plex can perform HDR tone mapping. Hardware-accelerated tone mapping also requires a Plex Pass and a capable GPU (which the N150 should support). Enable "Enable HDR tone mapping" in the Transcoder settings.
      * Number of Streams: While the N150 is capable, there are limits to how many simultaneous 4K or even 1080p transcodes it can handle. Test your setup with your typical usage to understand its capacity.
By following these steps, you should be able to enable and utilize the GPU (Intel Quick Sync Video) on your N150 for hardware-accelerated transcoding in Plex.

did you upgrade the Proxmox kernel to 6.14 (6.8 is the default and n150 igpu is not supported in 6.8)? https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/opt-in-linux-6-14-kernel-f…

      • +1

OMG I think that fixed it - thanks so much. I can now see the render node. I'll do some testing.

        • Great news. Doing a parity check. Another 12 hours left. Gonna check kernel on my unRaid too. Hopefully same issue. Want to finish parity as did lots of changes and pulled 2 drives.
