should i buy it or shouldn't i, shut up, Gil. Close the deal … close the deal

    • +30

At what point will this become annoying I wonder?

      • +13

It was funny at first. Getting a little old now… Just like ol'Gil.

      • +8

People started negging me after about a week for the "this will go great with my $199 netbook"

        • +11

Can you bring that back? I think it's been long enough that it would be funny again.

        • Yes say it you know you want to

      • It will never stop being funny.

    • Oh, this is bad, this is really bad! You work, and you slave, and you steal just enough for a sweet lick of that shiny brass ring… don't I get a lick? Doesn't Gil get a lick?

  • It's a nice deal….cheaper than how much I got mine for (HTC Inc. S for $299), but for the moment, mine still works fine so I'll pass.

    +1.

    • +43

      Thanks for letting us know.

  • +1

what other phones are similer with in the $300 mark?

    • +1

around $250 mark = almost none

      $300 mark? I can't think of any

      This is one good deal

    • +2

$300 mark there's the Sensation XE from HTC at Kogan that has similar specs, but honestly I'd go with this. This is Samsung Galaxy S2 specs (even better in some regards, such as the screen resolution) at under $250 and a reputable dealer, which would make it much much much easier for warranty claims instead of Kogan.
If you have beef with Android though then you could go for HTC 8S or the Lumia 620, specwise slightly worse but still decent for this day and age and run WP8.

    • HTC Sensation XE, 280 at kogan. *beaten by someone above

    • +4

if you don't mind the brand and want high end specs theres the Meizu MX Quad from Uniquemobiles going for $299 + $19 shipping. It has the same processor chip as the Galaxy S3 albeit a smaller screen.

    • Kogan has the LG Optimus X4 for $330+19 shipping. That's Tegra quad core, much better screen, but well, quite a bit more cash. Of course, that's if you don't mind LG.

  • JB upgrade?

  • +2

thanks, i'll get this for my sister

    • -3

      do you hate your sister?

  • +2

Don't forget it is micro sim according to the specs. You'll need to order one or be careful with your scissors if you don't have one!

    • +1

gsmarena seems to suggest it's a mini-sim which is their way of saying standard size sim. please correct me if i'm wrong.

      • Unless gsmarena is wrong (it sometimes is) then I'd say you are correct.

      • My phone (Sony Acro S) has a normal SIM card, but it's listed on GSMarena as having a mini-SIM. So i think you're right.

        • +10

That's because a mini-sim is what we think of as a standard sim.
The original sim was actually credit card size.

      • +1

Full-size or 1FF (1st form factor) SIM's were the size of a credit card (85.60 × 53.98 × 0.76mm). It was followed by a version of the same thickness but 25mm long by 15mm wide, with one of its corners truncated (chamfered) to prevent misinsertion. It is known as a mini-SIM or 2FF (2nd form factor). The next version was the micro-SIM or 3FF (3rd form factor), with dimensions of 15 × 12mm.

  • Does this also work on optus networks?

My only smartphone so far has been a wp7 omnia7, so im keen to give android a go. This seems like a cheap way to do it!

    • Yes it's unlocked and quadband. so it works on any Australian network

    • +2

Optus sell it and GSMArena have it in the specs, but is still worth looking on the side of the box to triple check.

And damn you OP, I was going to post this after reading it on Whirlpool today (I was waiting for the online price to update)

  • -2

This or wait for the Nexus 4?

    • +3

Nexus is much better but who knows when it will come back on Google Play, and it is quite a bit more.

    • +11

by the time the nexus 4 will be available to public, the new one will be announced..

    • +6

That will be a long wait, I suspect Google may make a loss on each sale, that is why they did not have enough stocks. They sure piss off a lot of their users, I was originally intended to buy one of it but with all the new phones coming out, I will wait for a while longer.

      • Google won't make any loss. They are the ultimate winner behind Android phones because after all, they only care about how they can sell their online ADs and Apps. They make the Nexus 4 as a benchmark to show other OEMs what need to be done. The phones are just hardwares to deliver their real money maker.

      • +1

I doubt it has anything to do with Google making a loss (which has not been definitively proven). Google would have known the cost well in advance of release - it wouldn't make sense for them to abruptly halt production based on costs. I think it's far more likely that Google underestimated demand for launch, and now LG simply can not keep up with production.

        • +2

agree - LG havent made a single phone where 1million+ users want to buy one on launch day.
They probably lied to google saying they could handle it and this is what happens.

google probably wont be using LG again…

        • Knowing the way that supply chain generally work, I would disagree with you. Firstly I have no idea who made the call on launch expectation but how the hell do you not foresee releasing a top spec phone that cost 50% of similar phone wouldn't cause huge demands and at best Google had 200k(more likely around 100k) stocks for the initial launch…

Back to supply, even though Goole realise the launch is a disaster and more stocks are needed, it is not willing to pay more to get higher volume moving. You have to know LG make a lot of phones, you can't simply just ask LG to shift x number of production lines to stop producing whatever they are producing and make your stuffs just because you are Google. You either pay extra so your products take priority over others or wait for production capacity to be available. Google obviously choosen the later path partly due to cost, also partly due to not willing to anger other vendors too much by flooding the market with cheap top spec phones. Plus the shortage works in Google favour anyway, free constant media coverage kept the product in the headline.

        • how the hell do you not foresee releasing a top spec phone that cost 50% of similar phone wouldn't cause huge demands

LG said they're keeping on schedule with the Nexus 4 production. Maybe they only wanted to sell a certain amount through Google Play to get their phone out there. Nexus nor LG phones have ever been great sellers and phones sell more through retail stores, maybe they did underestimate demand.

at best Google had 200k(more likely around 100k) stocks for the initial launch…

          how would you know?

        • What is more surprising is Google's silence on this whole debacle. Have they offered any explanation that anyone knows of that you can source?

        • I'm pretty sure Google was pointing the finger at LG, saying supply was scarce and erratic, or something. LG naturally denied. Can't source at the moment.

I agree, though. The lack of official announcements is frustrating.

        • sorry for stupid question.. how much was Google Nexs phone when it was available and is that superior to this one ?

        • But wouldn't you assume that the contract would have had something about meeting demand? So LG would be obliged to meet their contract to Google before they fulfilled their own demand?

        • LG denies Nexus 4 supply issues as rumours of next Nexus device emerge

          http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/lg-denies-nexus-4-suppl…

        • I would be calling BS on all that… LG has no power over the Nexus brand. They can't simply announce something like that at random, and Google selects the OEMs from a draw - and LG's chances look slim to me, if Google is blaming them for current issues.

I think that article is a case of LG trying to deny blame and make itself out to be more important than it is (and a tech blog grabbing for views). Calling the Google-LG relationship a partnership is overstating matters.

        • LG denies Nexus 4 supply issues as rumours of next Nexus device emerge

          @fchis

The article also says, " In addition, LG has said that the rumours about the company working on a new Nexus 5 device are "unfounded"."

        • In short, it's a conspiracy. Fact is neither parties will deny till the next new Nexus is out.

        • "The Nexus 4 is not stopping. On the contrary, the pace will increase. Starting mid-February, there will no longer be any tension in the market."

          http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/16qpb0/the_nexus_4_…

          tl;dr Google underestimated demand.

        • "it appears that Google gave LG forecasted sales figures, based on the sales of previous Nexus sales results, but as anyone could tell you, the Nexus 4 is a quantum leap beyond the previous Nexus devices, and unsurprisingly, demand far exceeded the supply which Google had predicted. This hiccup aside, Robin claims that the relationship between LG and Google remains healthy." - source: Android Central

    • +1

Nexus 4 is $150 more (16gb), kind of pushing out of the price bracket.

    • none of them

  • Motorola Atrix for $150 delivered on ebay everyday is a good alternative.

Mine stills runs great and it had access to the latest cm10.

    • I had mine for almost 2 years until the Digitizer stopped working.

Currently trying to decide what to get next. Wait for the nexus 4 (could be months) or pull the trigger on a deal like this. Decisions, decisions.

    • +1

Could you link me? I searched eBay, no such price for a new handset.

      • -2

        Here's one (Refurbished) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MOTOROLA-ATRIX-MB860-4G-16GB-BLAC…

Also heaps on ebay.com (US). Just ask seller to ship overseas via priority mail with signature. Bought 3 already in the last 3 months for family/friends.

        • +5

for that price for a refurbished phone without warranty I would say Sony Xperia Sola from Vodafone is better.

  • does android provide free turn by turn navigation?

    • +2

      Yes.

    • +1

Free Google Navigation software, but uses data to download the actual maps during navigation.
In the newer maps versions, you can download maps to your SD card using your wi-fi.

      • But who cares about the data usage these days? Its more that if u t out of range then the nav stops working

  • +1

My local telechoice had a Razr on clearance in their window just before Xmas for a low $176! Didn't know much about the phone at the time and there was very little detail in the box. Not wanting to repeat the mistake I made buying my piece of crap HTC Incred S (worse Android phone I've owned) so I went home and googled the Razr specs and reviews. Looks like it compares to a SG2 and more.. Needless to say it was gone by the time I got back to the store.. Not as cheap but JB's seems like a reasonable deal.

    • Nothing wrong with Incredible S…
I still have mine and it is running beautifully on CM10 (bug-free and stable). The same developer is also working on CM10.1.
The stock rom is definitely disappointing though. I would recommend installing CM10 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082327

    • Was it actually the Razr V, the same phone as this deal? Or was it another model?

  • +1

Here's a direct link to it on JB's website, currently priced at $388 (outright)
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/motorola/razr-v-sku-89773/

Or the JB online version: http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-outrigh… (again $388 currently)

Edit: Free Shipping + plenty stores showing stock (Vic), don't see why this wouldn't also be available, reduced, tomorrow online.

  • +2

Looks to be bootloader locked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915675
    I would be tempted otherwise.

    • +1

also doesn't look like a heap of support on xda…
else i too would be tempted!

      • +2

Yeah locked means no custom roms

      • same, was tempted as well. No official JB roadmap, and no support via custom roms. Its a dead end.

    • They managed to root this phone still no custom recovery or custom roms so no point of rooting

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844185

      • +2

well adblock, droidwall and titanium backup are all good reasons to root, even if you can't unlock the bootloader.

        • Yeah I'm happy enough with that

    • yeah that is such a shame

  • Welp, I just bought the sony xperia sola a week ago from HN for 199.

    • you could have got one through qwibble/voda for 165.

      • Would they have been unlocked though?

  • 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    3G HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
    SIM & Mini-SIM

    • It was…but not everyone could get one

    • +7

That's such a useful post. I'll go grab my time machine and travel back to when it was available!

      • +2

I missed the last deal on time machines, so I'll borrow yours to get one if that's ok

        • +1

there haven't been any deals on time machines on ozbargain. there will be in future; for that you need time machine.

        • +1

If thats the case, the future us should be able to go back to the present instead to lend us the time machine

      • -1

I said it was a very good price.
Just pointing out that there are good deals coming up from time to time so might be worthwhile waiting if you're not in a rush for a new phone and don't like the look of the Razr…

As to the time machine - could I borrow it some time, say next week?

  • Love the avatar!

  • +2

Really don't need another handset but I want it.. curse you materialism.

  • +10

Small internal storage (<4GB) and has issues moving apps to SD
No custom rom development on xda (Stuck on stock ICS)
    Decent specs and design

    • This should be a highlighted post!
The user accessible storage is only around 2Gb, combined with no Apps2SD that gets restrictive VERY quickly especially for some games.

  • Must get one tomorrow!

  • It says "Mini Sim card," is that just a standard sim card?

    • Yes, read the thread above.

      • -3

To Leonard: It uses standard sim card, I just bought one and I am using the standard sim card now

        • +3

To cuongacc: That's what Leonard said.
