Entertainment's heyday was in the era of the paper book. I used to be able to swap vouchers to keep going to my favourite places. Probably not great for the business, but definitely good for me. When they went to the app all that stopped, and that's when it started to go down hill. Not sure how popular it is these days but I hardly hear anyone talking about it anymore. Bring back the paper book haha.

    • Agreed… now there is nothing great except maybe Woolies 5% discount on gift cards. Justified if u shop at Woolies a lot

      • +2

I'm pretty sure they only offer 4% off Woolworths giftcards, but please correct me if I'm wrong. If it was 5% I'd jump onto it as I spend a lot at Woolworths (there are heaps of other options for getting 4% off).

        • oh gosh whats that company that went bust in your profile.

i remember how some friends got new phones (going onto a new plan) before they went bust and i was like damm so lucky lol

    • +20

It went down hill when the company got purchased by BPS Technology (now called IncentiaPay). They lost the spirit of the book. It used to be free for businesses to have a listing. Now they want $10k!

      • +8

Explains a lot. Sad they’ve ruined it

      • +1

And then people are surprised when the deals go away or cant be provided any longer.

    • +2

It’s definitely not as valuable for all of the reasons mentioned so far. I have never not had it, but each year it seems less and less useful, mostly because there are so few offers for cafes compared to in the past. I’ve had a look and I’ve not yet spent what it cost me last year (I still have 2 months left).

And the app; what a nightmare.

    • +1

It's far from what it was then when potential savings were barely worth the cost of the book, sharing with friends definately helped the value proposition. At this point it seems to be a scam for vendors and consumers alike.

"not great for the business, but definitely good for me"

Pretty much sums up the average ozbargainer

      • Vice versa sums up the average business.

I have been signing up on deals similar to this one. Last one I signed up I believe was $70 with a $30 VISA gift card and a $20 David Jones one so I thought I'd take a shot.

I'd say 70% of the places I go to redeem the offers at just give me a funny look. Sometimes that is handy because they don't even make you 'redeem' the offer. However I've had others so confused by it I swear they think I'm trying to run sort of scam. I was at a small cafe redeeming a 25% offer (I tried there because of the offer) and the lady said "I'll give you the discount but I've worked here X years and I've never heard of that in my life".

The advantage of the paper book was also that offers didn't get pulled mid year. I've definitely had offers disappear in the app.

Definitely worth checking the list / app on their website to see if there's any decent offers around you that you will actually use before signing up. If you travel around a bit the multi city can be good as it will often give you somewhere to try for food / entertainment with an offer.

      • I had the same issue with Dimmi (also called The Fork). You would book a restaurant and redeem a $50 off when you had enough points. When you went to pay you always had to go through multiple staff to get the discount. Most had no idea what Dimmi was and the $50 off was never recorded on the booking (on their side).

The Eat Club app has a system where you can add their own debit card to your phones wallet. Then you pay the vendor with the card and they automatically apply the discount you redeemed to your total bill.

Very nice system because you don’t even need to tell the vendor your using 25 - 45% off your bill.

          • @D0OMZDAYZ: I haven't tried this yet but that sounds like a better system than trying to argue with the staff for the discount.

          • @D0OMZDAYZ: I use EatClub and it’s great once you get over the initial anxiety

            • @Mingenibbler: Anxiety that the card wont work or something else?

              • @ElCrypto: About the card not working and the process having some error that either embarrasses me or inconveniences someone else. I’m extremely low income and have severe anxiety disorder haha so maybe an outlier compared to most ppl who could probably eat a full price bill if technical difficulties arose.

          • @D0OMZDAYZ: I've been using this… No awkward conversations.

          • +1

@D0OMZDAYZ: they have great services as well.

I accidentally used my default payment card instead of the eat club payment card and offer not redeemed. They contacted me and refunded the discounted amount after I submitting payment evidence.

            highly recommended

  • +4

All near me 25% off and only three / searching the site a few better BUT in the old days mostly 2 4 1 / Not worth it in my opinion

    • +3

You will also find that quite a few of the businesses with 25% off are 20% off via NRMA Blue which you can grab for free at the moment.

      • Agreed NRMA discounts are same and at the same location for most of the eateries. Even available outside NSW as well.

Eating out is just way too expensive nowadays!

    • +3

So is shopping at Coles and Woolworths…

    • +5

      Eatclub. First table. Liven.

Special mention for too good to go.

  • +6

eatclub and first table offer better deals.

    • +1

      and no subscription required

  • +1

    Not $1 deal anymore?

  • +1

I am suprised in the lack of restaurants. I was tempted and live in inner Melbourne. You'd have to go out of your way to go to a restaurant listed.

  • +3

If you have HSBC Savings, they give free access to it too. I got it before when I opened my account and it has been useful. Not sure if it is exactly the same as this paid version but it is called HSBC Instant Savings - Frequent Values by Entertainment for anyone who wants to dig deeper.

    • +1

Yes the savings are a bit lower (like 20% instead of 25%) but I think that is offered to Credit Card holders, which is no longer fee even for Premiere member.

      • oh okay, I've had it for a while. Shame they removed for Premier, thanks for the info.

        • Shame they removed for Premier

          Jacinta can’t use it? 😳

    • Wait you get access to the Entertainment book with HSBC?

      • Apparently, only for credit cards now and as above, the discounts are not the same as paid version. Got the access 3.5yrs ago when I opened a savings account (Premier).

  • +2

Just be careful the gift card expires after a month or so. Caught me out and I couldn’t use it.

    • +1

3 months actually - it's clearly written in the OP.

      • Caught me out too

        • I was caught out by the Econnex deals. Dodgy promotions.

  • +2

If you have Zurich Life Insurance, this is included in your Life app.

  • I’ve come back from 5 years overseas and this seems now nearly useless from skimming it. Doubt I’d recover the cost of it

  • +3

Agreed that it’s not of much value anymore
You can tell by their desperation to sell these - they’re giving away $30 gift card, plus a free upgrade.
Even that won’t be enough to convince people who’ve purchased the app version and found the offers useless

I get better offers in the Linkt app, even my electricity provider AGL has similar or better offers - and there is no extra membership required than what I’m already paying them as a customer

So, anyone reading this comment -and planning to buy one - DONT

    • Thought about getting it; read your comment and decided not to

    • +1

Linkt as in the company that charges for tolls? I didn’t know there was a loyalty program

      • +1

Not loyalty as such, but they have a tab in the app for 'Rewards' and there are some decent offers there from time to time. They have also been doing a bunch of competition promos recently, I won $20 toll credit last week.

  • +1

been using it for over a decade and this year is probably the first time so I will probably not renew.. hardly and good restaurants left

  • Entertainment’s sad decline reminds me of Groupon’s.

I was in America when Groupon and its rivals first came out. With all the referral bonuses and cashbacks, plus scores of dummy email accounts, at one stage I was literally being paid to eat at cafés around New York and New Jersey. Now Groupon is scammy rubbish - just like Entertainment.

  • i bought this last year at the same price and yeah, waste of money
Hotel & flight premium discounts (exclusive) are not exclusive at all, but are premium (often higher cost)

    Used to be fantastic

  • +5

Lot of negs on here so I thought worth giving the other side. In the past 12 months, 22 offers redeemed at $523 estimated value. I never have an issue justifying the purchase. We dine out a decent amount and whenever I'm a different part of the city (Perth), usually check here first for a place we've never been to. It's been pretty good discovering new places to eat.

  • a few years ago I got 3 months for 99c, still not worth it as I used nothing in there. I can get discounts through NRMA rewards for dining, Cheapeats and first table for free. Used to use The Fork all the time too before they left Australia. I can also get 5% discount on WW gift cards through NSW Seniors, plus I also get the Restaurant Choice gift cards when 10% off and use those as well….occasionally The Best Restaurant on special as well, but that isn't as good.

  • +2

Key points to note and be aware

    • Many merchants/business refuse to honor their discount when dispite their business is in the Entertainment app.
    • Surcharge applied when purchase gift card.
    • Check area you often visiting and see if there is enough number of business like resturants and cafe you want to visit in that book to justify the purchase.
    • Many good and value for money offer has long gone in Entertainment book you hardly find why spend this money to have book.
  • Definitely had some value from it in the past. Used it for quite a few B1G1F not necessarily food. E.g. Rock climbing saved around $30 and a also used for several good cafes. We easily made up the value of it when purchased on discount. Seems better value is found in Perth.

  • +1

I also still get value from it. The others mentioned here are good in the CBDs, but don't have good coverage outside it. However, entertainment has better coverage in the suburbs than them. So I can understand if you are mostly in the city then you're fine with the others but outside it still has value, as that's the only program I find with offers for many places.

Haven't had any problems redeeming though of course it could happen but doesn't seem a general problem. Lots of people comparing to 'what used to be' but like with other discounts it's all about what you can get now, not any use saying something was cheaper years ago, which doesn't help now.

  • The app sucks, vendors can leave whenever they please. I booked chinese down the road and over the span of a couple of days they removed themselves from the app. Of course they couldnt do that with the book.

  • I still get value out of this app but you have to be targeted with the right vendors.

For $70 cost, I get way more value from it.
