how is lyca on the vodafone network because kogan blows on the vodafone network and funnly enough vodafone blows on the vodafone network which is especially odd because i l live in the regional backwater called sydney australia

    • +3

I used to be a big 'Vodafail' guy, but I've got to admit they've definitely upped their game now. I get great speeds on my personal phone (on Voda) and often better coverage in my local area on Voda than my work phone using a Telstra plan.

Obviously, YMMV but I think the days of Vodafone being super crappy may be behind us, especially after they recently greatly increased their overall coverage

      • Kogan 4G is giving my dad 6mbps download and <1mbps upload. North western suburbs of Adelaide ~10km away from centre. If Vodafone MVNOs use the exact same network as Vodafone then I'm never buying Vodafone again (at least here). Everyday Mobile 4G gives 110mbps download.

        • Yeah as I said - "YMMV". Things as variable as mobile network coverage are always going to differ based on a dozen different factors, location most importantly.

In my area, Vodafone is vastly superior to the Optus coverage which is better than the Telstra coverage

    • +2

It really depends on where you live because in Canberra, there are patches where Telstra is the only one usable, and in other areas like mine, Telstra is unusable and Vodafone and Optus are much more reliable and fast. On 5g, I can get 200-600mbps with Vodafone, and No Signal on Telstra.

    • +1

Have you tried in the last 6 months?

Ever since Optus and Vodafone started tower sharing, the Voda network has been amazing.

      • Is that everywhere or just regional areas?

        • +1

Everywhere they didnt previously have cover, including metro.

Thats what their current "2x the coverage" ad campaign is about.

          • @MasterScythe: Maybe it's worth another look then. I signed up with Vodafone on one of their 5G plans a couple of years ago. Absolutely sucked even in the Melbourne CBD. Their "5G" was a joke, I got faster speeds from Aldi Mobile 4G.

You can search your postcode here and see what towers are around you and what bands providers are utilizing from the towers.
      https://www.rfnsa.com.au/home

A slightly better method to search locations you frequently visit instead of: Telstra good, vodafone bad.

  • +3

That data is not worth the Lyca experience lol

  • Even cheaper than Kogan’s 500GB plan. How is this compared to Kogan Mobile?

    • kogan for all its obvious faults isnt too bad as far as admin goes

    • This one has 5g access.

  • +3

Lyca sucks. Worst telco by far

    • Agree. Ordered SIM a few months ago and never received it. They've issued a refund.

    • What's it like though when it works and you don't need support?

  • Unlike all other mobile services, Lyca oddly doesn't support MMS which may annoy/inconvenience some unsuspecting customers https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16209551/redir

    • +1

the plan doesn't include 13XXXX & 18XXXX calls and MMS (see CIS)

    • Is MMS the gifs I use with giphy in normal msging

    • Would that impact on messages sent through either iMessage or Android RCS ??

Snapchat / Discord does most of the heavy lifting these days so might not be such a big deal for my son who usually needs data.

    • good to know, I have had to send photos or videos in messages to tradies.

  • +2

I have this SIM and tried to put it into a TP Link 4G router but it doesn't work but works in a mobile phone.

So I have USB tethering from an iPhone to a RPi running OpenWRT to overcome this limitation.

      • Lebara is not Lyca.

          • @c64: "Our product and services are for everyone" LOL

          • +1

            @c64: also the CIS states:

            Tethering
Tethering is permitted for personal devices only but must not be used in a modem or as a substitute for a home internet service.

            Network, speed, and coverage
            • You will have access to our 5G network using your 5G-compatible devices. Outside of the 5G coverage areas, your device will automatically connect to the 4G network. Download speeds are capped at 100Mbps. The speed cap on your plan is the maximum potential download speed for data included in your recharge/plan

so no modems and 100Mbps download speed cap

    • That sounds cool how do you do that

    • Lyca's configuration is janky & will often not work in non-standard devices.

I recommend just staying away from them, its not worth the hassle.

  • dupe of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/907964 "Offer available from 30.05.2025."

    • That one is expired, so not a dupe.

  • With rollover does that mean if you only use 20gb a month for 3 months you can use 90 plus 50 on the next month ?

    • You should be able to yep

  • +1

My Kogan plan expired and I joined this plan via esim last week, have been pretty happy so far. Esim activation and porting was easy and quick. Great value for the data inclusion and 5g coverage.

    • How long did it take for eSim to be processed and for you to be back online/make call

      • +1

The portal prompted me to activate a new number via eSim first and then lodge the port afterwards. They then replace your new number with your old ported number. Porting took about 10-15 minutes, so in that time I had no access to my old number.

  • +2

So this is better than kogan mobile?

    • +1

probly better value for money than kogan, given the allowance

whether lyca're better to deal with or/and have a better interface is up to you

      edit: check Churna's post below:

Lyca does not include calls to 1800/1300 calls in their unlimited calls and text like most other providers do

  • +5

BE ALERT: Lyca does not include calls to 1800/1300 calls in their unlimited calls and text like most other providers do. In my month with them I had half work, half fail unless I added MORE credit

    • +3

whoa this should be in the main body of every lyca deal

    • +1

so what if i need to call a 1800/1300 number? Will it deduct from some sort of credit or you will need to add on something?

      • +1

Yep for me, most banks and centrelink still worked (maybe they do something to cover the charge) but multiple businesses I tried to call it just failed to ring at all, I called Lyca support and they said I need to top up credit in the app to call them

  • avoid this company, ordered a sim card takes ages to delivery, more than 1 month, then I cancelled. Very bad customer service, go for other providers.

  • Is this a 4G or 5G plan, don't see it mentioned anywhere on rheir webpage

    • It's a 5g plan capped at 100mbps

  • -1

    Avoid, worst telco ever

  • Beware of this. Bought one of these and could not activate it. After multiple attempts it said I had multiple accounts linked to me although I didn't. It is impossible to get any help. Was on hold for an hour and a half over multiple phone calls.

I had used them before and would have recommended but not any more.

  • the concerning thing about this company is that its misdeeds have been punished by the toothless comms regulator

  • My Sim worked for 2 days, and they asked me to renew. Bloody scammers

  • I bought this through shopback and it actually managed to track for $23 bringing this deal down to $157 for 600gb.

I did have a minor frustration with having to contact Lyca customer service to transfer my esim to a new phone and was on hold for about 40 minutes but has been relatively smooth sailing otherwise as am eSim user.

  • Lyca's backend/configuration is a janky mess. Avoid them if you value your time. Porting in/out is frequently a mess, you may LOSE your number if they F it up badly enough & it is a nightmare to fix. Something they do regarding their sim configuration makes MMS not work & the sim wont work in older devices or 4g modems.

I cannot recommend avoiding them strongly enough.

  • +2

Rolled the dice and bought this despite all the negative reviews and, honestly - it's been perfect.

Sim arrived in 6 days (4 business days) via registered post. I activated the SIM with a new number (this is a data sim ony) and it works straight away with a Telstra Gen 3 modem.

I've got both ipv6 and ipv4 addresses and 80-100 megabit speeds. Logged into the portal and deleted my card and turned off auto renewal but will have to wait a year to make sure that sticks.

Otherwise, perfect. I would recommend for anyone that needs a cheap data bundle for their phone/modem. Would I recommend porting over a number that you actually care about? No - probably not worth the risk.

    Edit:
Received an automated email confirming that my card has been deleted.

    • I'm wondering if turning off auto-renewal would affect the monthly renewal.
The auto-renewal management page says the plan will renew every month.

      • Ah shoot, you're right - it appears that they've done this so you keep your card linked. I've had to re-add my card and enable auto-renewal so it refreshes next month.
I wonder if there is way around this at all

  • Their overall service is terrible. Avoid this company.

    1. You cannot activate your SIM via their website and you’re forced to use their mobile app. The website appears to offer an activation option, but it’s completely broken.
    2. Their activation process doesn’t provide the old number porting option. You have to contact them via online chat.
    3. Their online chatbot actually supports number porting, but it’s broken as well. You end up having to call a real person.
    4. You could be waiting hours before a human agent finally joins the chat.
    5. The online chat system is also buggy. I can see my own messages sent out, but their agent repeatedly asks questions I’ve already answered and even asks, “Are you there?”, which seems the messages were not sent to agent side.
    • For anyone using their service: their mobile app includes both “Activate SIM” and “Port In Old Number” buttons.
Using these will save you hours of time to chat with their agent.
