$15 Clearance: Black & Decker GYRO Rechargeable Motion Activated Screw Driver @ Bunnings Gordon

1700

I used one of these things at my sister-in-law's to put together an Ikea 3 drawer chest in under 10 minutes! It is the single most coolest gadgets I've used in recent years! Been contemplating buying one for a few weeks now, but orig price of $40 was a bit hefty…

Went into Bunnings today to refund a wrong-sized hose clamp and saw this on the front counter marked clearance at $15! Bought it in a heartbeat! See if your local has it on clearance too, if not, my receipts attached in case they can do a price match.

I'm tempted to just drive out now and get another one… hmmmm….

I saw this today at bankstown airport bunnings but its $20!
    Marked down from $69 -> $40 -> $20!
Played with it and feels pretty cool but didnt end up getting one.

    • Wow! It was $69 at one stage?? That's nuts! Lucky I waited :)

    • +3

Said: Was $39, now $20 at my Bunnings

I commend people like you that take time to post photos and receipts. Thanks for the effort and looks like a good priced product. Ill have a look in Bunnings and grab one.

Saw these advertised before Christmas and thought 'how ridiculous' but after reading the OPs brief review and seeing the price I might just go visit my local Bunnies and see if they have some left :) Cheers OP!

  • OP How many different screw drivers is there included?
    Any hex keys?

  • Want to find it on their website :(

    Nice carpet!

  • How do you get more screwdriver heads for this?

    • It probably has a magnetised end which standard bits will fit

      • Yep, it is.

  • If there's enough torque to be at least close to what I can do manually, then it's probably a cool tool.

    • I would expect it would be good for building Ikea stuff where too much torque can actually be a bad thing.

      • IKEA Springvale was actually selling these when I was there a few weeks ago, for $40ea if I remember correctly.

      • dirty torque

    • from the gizmodo review its not going to go through raw wood, more for predrilled holes. if you have strong hands i dont think it will come close

    • +1

I compared a new, freshly charged gryo screwdriver to a calibrated micrometer torque wrench (I connected them directly to each other via a 6mm Allen bit).
The gyro does < 2Nm (the calibrated lower limit of my wrench). If I extrapolate, it's < 1Nm. Assuming the wrench is still accurate, I think it's about 0.2Nm.

I'm not saying it's useless though, in fact I'm loving the gryo screwdriver. In addition, the motor doesn't 'give', so you can manually apply more torque (until about 3.5Nm).

      • That's pretty low, but probably a good thing for a normal home user.
careful with manually turning though, you wouldn't want to burn out the motor or overload the batteries!

  • Maddington, WA aisle 4, pallet load, $20.
Couldnt be bothered waiting to do price match.

    • Also at Armadale WA about 15 left that I saw

  • looks cool, If i get time I'll head to woodville, Adelaide branch and post up how much they have them for.

    • Please provide an update when you know more. Thanks.

      • Heading to woodville tomorrow, didn't get time today.

        • Thanks.

        • +1

Woodville has them $20 (won't price match) in the tools section near the counter. Looks like 9 boxes with 5 loose on top.

  • Would appreciate it if anyone could advise stock levels at Mascot, Randwick or Ashfield, NSW. I'll try calling in the morning. They don't seem to have e-mail as a contact method.

    • Let us know how you go.

      • How about Rockdale? Anyone knows if they still have stock? Thanks.

        • rockdale zero stock(as per today 17:00) i got one for $20 from Caringbah.
i showed the OP's printed receipt at the cashier and the girl claimed i need to bring the original(?????!!!!!) receipt if i want them to match the price!!! I was happy with the $20 but(after seeing that most people got it for $15) tomorrow i'm gonna go and fight for a $15 one :p

        • Hi GregFiona, can you update Caringbah's stock level if you do go again today (Tuesday) please.

        • +1

i will be going again in one hour, i'll keep you updated ;)

        • +2

Just came back from Bunnings Caringbah, they have plenty in stock, more than 10 boxes plus 7 spare on top of the boxes(around 50 in total). Display price is $20(Clearance). I spoke to a girl and a guy at the cashier, they said they don't price match other Bunning's offers and they said it's manager's discretion to do a further discount. When i asked to speak to the manager(after i've shown them the 3 receipts posted on ozb) they changed their mind and gave it to me for $15.
Here is the invoice http://oi46.tinypic.com/dbjjhg.jpg and here a photo of the current stock in front of the tools section http://oi49.tinypic.com/30bgw3p.jpg

        • Bit far for me. Hope you bought lots!

        • +1

one yesterday for me for $20 and one today for my brother($15)

        • +1

Hi GregFiona! Safe to say, without your help putting up tax invoice, they wouldn't price-match the offer! Got 2 for $30! Thanks so much!

        • +1

You are welcome! It's not about the $5(Actually it is…this is OZB) but those people at Bunnings do have attitude issues and keep finding ridiculous excuses, but apparently when you ask them to speak to their manager they change their mind and immediately offer the discount without further delays

    • +1

Plenty at mascot got one for $20

      • +1

        Thanks, so not $15 then.

    • heaps left at Ashfield!
They had a few boxes - $20, didn't bother with trying to price-match…

  • +1

can't find it on the bunnings site.. wish they had an inventory on their website too =\

  • Currently advertised in the QLD catalog at $20.

    • Also on front page of Victorian catalogue for $20.

      • Must mean it's not $15 in Melbourne then.

and comes with a 4 year warranty!!!!

Hi all, sorry for late reply
Re screw heads: comes with a flat head and Phillips head, but it uses standard hex magnetic coupling so I've got plenty in my toolbox. Even works with my flexi-extensions

Re torque: plenty of torque, more than what my hand could do with a t-grip screw driver. Max speed is 180rpm so it's kinda slow compared to my Ryobi one+ cordless drill, but ALOT faster than manual turns and a lot smaller than the Ryobi. Whilst I can couple it with hex-bolt sockets (eg: for using on my car), I haven't tested it's strength there yet. But I could always use a ratchet to break the bolt loose first.

And as for usage, I like how It's sensitive to the angle of turn, the more you turn your wrist the faster it goes, and it could also go REALLLLLY slow.. so I can actually use it with precision (eg, screws on electronics), that's where my cordless drill fails coz it seems to always want to punch a hole through anything.

Oh and it works at any angle too, like if you're holding it upside down or even facing towards you (plumbers/carpenters will understand the challenge I'm talking about)…

And yeh 4 yrs warranty too!! Luv it!!!

    • Unscrewability.

It's a fun and useful device but my experience with what it could unscrew was different here.

It was relatively easy to find screws around the house it wouldn't open (specifically the Philips screws on the locks on the side of some doors here which I can do by hand). But that said, what it did unscrew I was mostly impressed with and it should do good for most jobs.

The gyro works well and has been given some good thought to make it simple. When your hand is at an odd angle, the gyro is quickly and simply re-set by holding the button down. So if your hand is in an un-level position it's no problem for the device to know what's clockwise and what's not. Nifty implementation!

      Thanks for the deal.

  • I wish it used a USB cable to charge.

The hold charge for 18 months probably means the battery will go flat after 18 months of sitting in a cupboard.

  • Does this come with a charger and if so, how big is the adapter? Will it fit the standard space on a powerboard? Cheers

    • Do yourself a favour and get a $25 huntkey 8 outlet board from MSY or PCCG. From memory it has 2 (possible more) outlets to accommodate power bricks.

      • Yeah it's not that much of an issue, but seeing as this thing is compact, it would be fitting to include a small charger too.

    • Yes comes with a charger with a proprietary plug..charger itself is 4cm wide x 5cm tall x 5.6cm long..it fits comfortably along with the other chargers on my powerboard. Hope this helps.

  • Just saw someone on gumtree trying to flog these for $40 bucks.

  • I've also had my eye on these things since they came out. My local Bunnings (West Gosford) had them at a reduced price last week for $40. I'm heading there tomorrow to see if they have it even less and also to see if I can get them to match that $15!!

    Thanks OP!

    • +1

That's gunna be interesting… Remember their tv ad slogan? "if you happen to find a lower price on a stocked item, we'll beat it by 10%"… it'd be funny if you end up getting it for $13.50 price matching their own price! Hahaha… Good luck!

      • lol.. do they price match on receipts?

      • +1

price beating does not include clearance items and stock liquidation. says on the advert

  • +2

Belmont WA had a few left yesterday for $20. I showed them the receipt and they dropped it to $15.

    • Sweet. Might have to try this tonight at my local Nubbings.

  • Can anyone tell me whether theyve tried it in bunnings in melbourne?

    • went to bunnings scoresby in Melbourne and they said it was 20. they said they will do a one-off for me for 15 and they actually don't have to match clearance

    • Yup my local bunnings had it for $20, couldn't be bothered asking for $15 since it was clearance, still happy for $20.

  • +1

Does Bunnings Mascot, Randwick have this and how much is it? Anyone?
    Cheers

$20 at my local Qld Bunnings. I told him I saw another Bunnings in NSW had them for $15 and he discounted it no questions asked or proof. He said if it was on clearance it was fine. Score. Thanks Ionertic.

    • Thanks P3Ace. Also went to a Qld store, showed them your comment and the deal was done at $15.

  • +1

none at modbury, sa. will try parafield on my way to work. hopefully don't get shot

  • Still a stack of them at Midland WA

  • just called bunnings in sandown, melbourne they have them in stock but for $20, said that they can't match the receipt price as its in another state, plenty left in stock

    • ask him to give it to you as a one off

    • same at Bunnings Dandenong, would not match price. Bought 2 anyway - I still cosider it a bargain at $20.00

  • I got told SA Bunnings don't sell the Black & Decker brand.

    • You are correct, I was told the same at Castle Hill!?!.
Apparently this is the only black & decker unit they are doing and generally Bunnings have stop selling B&D products and even with this they said they have this as a clearance promotion… If you go to the tool shop and speak to someone there or look for it near where screw drivers are or look for special promotional item box and you will find it.

  • +1

I went into the Caroline Springs store this morning and they have plenty in stock. Thanks to OP also as I printed his receipt and pic and took it in and the guy in the tool section price matched as many as I wanted without question. I got 4 of them for gifts at $15 a pop.

  • +1

Bunnings Parafield have them at $20. In the tool shop next to the socket sets. Got one. Thanks OP!

  • Castle hill bunnings said they do not price match with other bunnings :-(
I still got it as even for $20 its a great tool to have..

  • Heaps of stock at Launceston Bunnings. Sign says $39.90, but scanning at $20.

I think a slot would havebeen ideal on the unit to store the extra driver bit. (not complaining ) just a thought :)

  • 3 left at Minchinbury NSW.

  • None left @ Gordon NSW. :(

    • Lol… My bads :p

  • I got one in Geelong (Waurn Ponds) for $20. Thanks.

  • Thanks OP. Just back from Carlingford Bunnings where there were about 10 left this lunchtime. I queried their $20 price and showed the photo of the $15 price from Gordon store saying a friend had sent it to me, and they matched the price. The supervisor was a bit confused as to why there was a price difference until he noticed it was a deleted line and confirmed to the checkout assistant "she could therefore price it whatever she wanted…" (I didn't push for a further reduction!)

Here is a photo of the product and my price adjusted receipt in case it helps others: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2w15ewoxhh435l0/Bunnings%20Screwdr…

Just got one from Bunnings Noosaville. Was in clearance for $20, but with copy of OP's receipt paid $13.50. Price match plus 10%! Thanks to original OP - just waiting for it to charge now.

    • Wow..u ACTUALLY managed to score an extra 10% on the price match? Cool! And I think most people are right in that, even at $20 it's a good bargain… Kudos to the Noosaville store manager though.l. I bet that a few bucks made u a VERY happy customer :)

  • +1

Price matched as well with extra 10% came to $13.50.Thanks OP.Bunnings Taylors Beach ,couple left.

  • A little pissed. I was in Bunnings looking for these before Christmas as a gift and was told they no longer stock them. Oh well, must have bought a heap of them. At that price I will buy a few and give them as gifts.

Just called the Frankston (Vic) store and the Tool Shop guy said he has heaps. Will be trying for a price match with the receipt but I have not seen any one in VIC be successful with this yet.

  • there's about 20+ at Artarmon (NSW) Bunnings … marked clearance for $20… on shelves opposite the power tools section..

  • +2

there was a whole pallet of these left at the Bunnings on Princes Hwy Springvale VIC. Easily price matched.
