BAUHN 4.5" Android 4.1 Smartphone (4GB NAND, Dual SIM) $199 from Aldi

180

Just spotted this on Aldi's latest catalogue. You can see the product page here on BAUHN's website (except it's dead slow at the moment). $199 for the following smart phone:

  • 4.5" IPS screen 960x540
  • MTK6577 1GHz Dual Core + SGX531 GPU
  • Dual SIM with WCDMA on 850/2100MHz (good for Telstra/Vodafone)
  • 5MP rear camera + 0.3MP front camera
  • Bluetooth + AGPS/GPS
  • Micro SDHC slot
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

It would be in stock starting 6 March.

A good deal? Maybe. You can get other MTK6577-powered 4.5" Android phones cheaper from BuySKU/Banggood/Whatever, for probably $150-$180 delivered. What Aldi offers is (1) Australian store with GST price (2) 60 days satisfaction warranty (3) 1 year general warranty.

Performance wise it would be slower than Qualcomm MSM8260 + Adreno 220 in the other popular $199 phone. It does have a 2000mAh battery though.

    • Good point, probably better off with that unless you REALLY want google now.

    • Yes I've even linked to that in my post + some comparison. You might not be able to find Velocity 4G on your nearest DSE / KMart though, but there's no guarantee that you will find this in your local Aldi either and it won't be on sale until next week.

This one also comes with stock Jelly Bean, which I consider an important update comparing to ICS due to project butter. Yes there's CM10 for Velocity 4G although there are still issues.

      Otherwise, as I've stated in the post, Qualcomm MSM8260 + Adreno 220 is better than MTK6577 1GHz + SGX531.

    • i need a new phone, think this or the HTC one u linked to would run Vice city?

      • They might be able to, but if the app doesn't list them as supported (doesn't seem to), then you are often stuck without being able to install it anyway.

Looks good but lack of WCDMA 900 is a real let down.

    • i.e. not good for Optus 3G data in most cities.

Also pity the specs don't say what the HSPA connection speeds are.

  • Not bad. Not a lot of pixels for the huge screen size though.
And the shell design looks strangely familiar.

edit: yes, hard to compete with the HTC Velocity linked above, if still available.

  • can both sims be active at the same time or do you have to switch from one to another?

    • +1

      theyre both active

but one is 2g and the other is 3g, both exclusive to each

In same catalogue it says 'Aldi Mobile' is coming on March 6 as well, could be interesting..

Will Aldi be selling their own virtual network soon? Maybe not, if their phones do not run on an Optus 3G frequency.

    • Unless they run it on Vodafone or Telstra..

      • Less likely, as they are a lot less reseller freindly, going by the fact that everyone and their dog resells Optus.

        • Yep there's a ton of Optus resellers but if you live in an area with poor Optus reception then that limits your choices somewhat. With the exit of Crazy John's there aren't any decent Vodafone/Telstra resellers below the ~$25/month that Red Bull/Kogan offer, there's an opportunity for someone to satisfy that low-medium budget space for those in low Optus reception areas.

    • Their service will run off Telstra's 3G network.

dual sim was promising until the lack of quad band 3g. no deal

  • +1

Looks pretty good for the price and the fact that it's local stock with 60day / 12month warranty.

  • Is this better than kogan phone?

  • would not recommend this with the Velocity around

the only thing to get over that is dual sim if its a must.

    • too bad that the Velocity is no longer around…….

  • I can't find the dimensions of the weight of this device anywhere?

  • Could u tell me which android phone that really good with dual sims but unexpensive one. Is this good ? Thanks

  • bootloader locked or unlocked?

    • it would be unlocked, generic phone and firmware, universal mtk6577 root should work

  • Does lack of WCDMA 900 mean it will not work on Optus 3G but will work on Optus 2G?

    • +1

      yes. Optus 3G is 900/2100

    • you would just end up on 2100 where everyone and their dogs are on.

      • Nope, all towers are 900 now which works much better. So if your phone supports it, odds are you are on 900 not 2100.

  • they've also got a $19.99 Onix 1.77" Dual Sim Mobile Phone (Unlocked)

  • These have sold out in South Melbourne and Brunswick.

anyone know of any stock in melbourne anywhere?

    • They were sold out in Sydney on the first day @3pm.

I think it was more a scam than a deal. Just to get people in stores :(

  • We got my mum one and just set it up today. It honestly seems like a good phone so far. I have a SGS2 and am jealous of some features. As you can expect, the screen isn't as crisp as most high end phones, but it's not bad at all. It's nice to use a pretty stock Jellybean OS, and it appears well implemented so far. The price and local store warranty make it a good deal.

  • I put my name down for one when the next batch comes in so it would be great to hear some more reviews from those who got one
