$8000 minimum limit - so you probably need to earn at least $50,000 to get this card. Good to have another credit card option with no foreign currency fees and no anual fee.

  • +6

not a bargain. Always zero annual fee on this card.

    • Have there always be no foreign transaction fees though? I was aware of this card but not that particular feature.

      • +4

Yes there is no foreign transaction fees for platinum card. Follow this & click on Features tab: http://www.bankwest.com.au/personal/credit-cards/compare-cre…

Not sure about currency conversion fee though. Anybody know?

      • Yup. It's been on Whirlpool a few times as an alternative to the Citibank Visa Debit and the 28 Degrees card.

        • +2

This cannot be a direct replacement to the 28 degrees card. The Bankwest Card does not allow you load up your balance to a positive amount to withdraw from an overseas ATM. All the other features are awesome though.

        • +1

Be careful about loading up a card though, If it gets stolen, and lets say the following are your limits:

          $3000 - Limit
          $4000 - Loaded

          Total Possible Usage: $7000

If the thief takes out all $7000, you are only able to claim back $3000, the other $4000 you put in is lost, as it isn't covered by the insurance.

      • +2

all bankwest platinum cards have no forex fee

  • +1

great deal! no reward points though. transfers from bankwest to other banks is very quick

    • Yeah I was looking at getting this card (last year), but worked out that even with the $99/year I'll make (save) $200 with their rewards card instead. Same platinum stuff and no currency conversion fees.

  • +1

    Always been $0 annual fee..

    • +4

its not a rep, its just a normal user.

  • +1

"No foreign transaction fees for online and overseas purchases". Does this make this card similar to 28 Degrees credit card with no transaction fees for overseas purchases ? The free travel insurance will make this card better I think as I have not seen this benefit in card with no annual fees.

    • +2

But it doesn't have the fee free cash withdrawals, that allow you to use the 28 degrees card to withdraw cash. However, it seems pretty decent with respect to additional warranty and travel insurance.

      • It says the cash advance fee is payable for each amount "drawn as cash advance". What if I pre-load the card with some positive balance and then withdraw? Is that still considered "drawn as cash advance"?

    • Agreed, more details would be appreciated. OP?
Would be a good companion for 28° though. 28° for cash withdrawals, and Bankwest for purchases.

    • +3

      +1 to what 'bargain_knight' said..

for online purchases and as a use as a credit card, yes its the same..
for utilisation within ATM's overseas it is not as good..

I have both and intend on using the Bankwest for my 'credit card' usage such as at hotels while using the 28degree as my 'ATM' card for cash withdrawals.
(Partly because Bankwest will likely be much better to deal with should an issue arise with regards to credit card fraud but mostly as I can take advantage of the interest free period while overseas)

      • +2

for credit purchases bankwest platinum is better than 28degrees due to free travel insurance, extended warranty, purchase protection, price guarantee

for atm withdrawals citibank plus visa debit is better than 28degrees due to deposit/funds fraud protection (and free wine)

        • for credit purchases bankwest platinum is better than 28degrees due to free travel insurance, extended warranty, purchase protection, price guarantee

indeed, upcoming holidays flights and accommodation were all booked using this for the free travel insurance

for atm withdrawals citibank plus visa debit is better than 28degrees due to deposit/funds fraud protection

its much of a muchness and I am yet to see conclusive proof that additional funds aren't covered and whether citibanks protection and customer service is better than 28degrees (i have both citibank and 28degree but with citibanks upcoming OTP online security changes it is less convenient for o'seas travel)

        • citibanks upcoming OTP online security changes it is less convenient for o'seas travel

they are automatically sending out tokens to all customers before mandatory otp comes into effect

    • Are the exchange rates as good as with 28° too? Basically very close to the XE.com rates?

      • +2

No, generally 28degrees rate is slightly better… (but negligible really… but then again we are OzBargainers and every cent counts)
But if you don't want to have two cards, this is a good replacement (for the free insurance)

        • +1

The 28degrees and Bankwest platinum rate should be exactly the same (that being the Mastercard currency conversion rate without any extra fees)…

        • hmmm you may be right. I've compared but for purchases made on separate days.

        • Thanks. I've wanted something which gives the rates of 28° but with the added travel insurance. Would have spent an easy $50-100 on fees for my most recent holiday.

  • This isnt 'new' and has been available for a quite a while ($0 platinum card) with the reduction in their international fx fees coming in last year sometime

  • As others have pointed out, this has been available for years. I think it is a good deal (I have one myself) because of the free travel insurance when you use it to purchase tickets, but it is not a new deal.

    • Do new transactions appear quickly on their online banking website? 28° has a 2-day delay so I might consider switching to this if BankWest's online banking is as good as Commonwealth's.

      • it does appear as an authorized pending transaction for DEBIT mastercard account. I'm assuming it will be the same for CC account

      • It appears within seconds of making a purchase! I really like their website and log in as well.

      • As the others mentioned, it's fast. Unlike Westpac, which only adjust the available credit but does not show "pending authorisation" like Bankwest does. 28° is the worst, and I also find it annoying that I don't know what exchange rate I got until days later.

  • This is not a bargain. Good deal or not.

  • used to have 0% p.a. for 6 months on purchase, which was better.

  • I agree the 28 Degrees card exchange rates are the best when used overseas or even for paypal.

  • I bought something last Friday with it. 113.32 GBP. It cost me $165.14 AUD

    • -4

1.457 exchange rate - what you complaining about?

      • +5

I'm not complaining about anything. I'm being helpful and giving you guys an idea of the exchange rate. I negged because this post isn't a bargain. This card always has zero annual fee.

        • -2

good stuff - you got a (foreign exchange)bargain and I agree, this isn't a deal, so no + or - vote from me.
Now you can retract your neg on my comment:)

  • +2

Unable to "+" this one because I have one - have had it for about 3 years now - same deal, so there's nothing new here.
Unable to "-" it either because it's a pretty good card. If going overseas buy all air fares using it for travel insurance cover.
Only thing that I'm not sure of is how it stacks against the 28 degree card - who has the best exchange rates?

  • Does anyone have a quick answer for whether the travel insurance with this card covers:

    1) ANY flights, i.e. whether originating in Australia or overseas, and with any airline; and
    2) Both the partner and myself?

    Thanks heaps.

    • I am quite sure it covers for both domestic and international, you can always ring up and ask them. I think the insurance is with zurich - same as what citibank uses.

As long as you use the card to purchase the tickets, both of you will be covered, that's what I got told when I rang up last time. however, your partner must have evidence that he/she resides in the same house.

      • I was told that too with my Amex, but reading the fine print I discovered it was only the primary card holder.

      • I am quite sure it covers for both domestic and international

sorry but its international only, though the card also includes interstate flight inconvenience insurance

        • +1

However it will also cover a domestic flight if its part of your international journey

        • true :)

        • Sorry to budge into the conversation, I have been reading the PDS online and the interstate flight inconvenience insurance seems to be explained in a separate part of the booklet to the international travel insurance. So if I just flew interstate within australia and my flight got delayed or cancelled by the airline, shouldn't the interstate flight inconvenience insurance cover that side of things?

        • yes

    • 1) ANY flights, i.e. whether originating in Australia or overseas, and with any airline; and

return overseas travel tickets must originate in australia

      2) Both the partner and myself?

only if the cardholder (primary or additional) travels together with them for entire journey

      http://www.bankwest.com.au/library/pdf/PDS_20060801-154923.p…

      • Thanks all. A lot of my travel originates from Asia so this card doesn't look all that useful anymore. Thanks heaps.

      • I think if you originate from Australia, but book an overseas return ticket between two countries (neither of which is Australia) as part of your trip, then I believe you are covered. So if I fly return to China, but book a return trip between China and Taiwan, then I think I should be covered (but hard to tell from the brochure).

One important point: if your wife is an additional card holder, then she would be covered even if you are not travelling (additional cardholder is free) :

        cardholder
means a person, being an Australian resident who has an Australian Medicare Card or holds a 457 Visa and whom Bankwest has issued an eligible credit card account
. This includes additional cardholders. If a family is travelling together, only one person can claim the benefits payable to the cardholder
. The others can only claim as a spouse or dependent child

        • I think if you originate from Australia, but book an overseas return ticket between two countries (neither of which is Australia) as part of your trip, then I believe you are covered. So if I fly return to China, but book a return trip between China and Taiwan, then I think I should be covered (but hard to tell from the brochure).

          +1

    • Note that at least 75% of the total value of the return overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) must be charged to credit card account to be eligible for the travel insurance.

  • +1

i first posted this in 2009 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/16772 however Bankwest now offer No foreign transaction fees for online and overseas purchases on all their Platinum cards. just dont use it to make a atm cash out as i think you will be stung with $5 fee plus cash advance interest fees? they also have a platinum debit card which does not charge O/S Atm fees and earns reward points but i think you will get charged foreign transaction fees for online and overseas purchases. You will need a high income to qualify for BW Platinum credit cards i think 65k+ but if you already have a bankwest credit card with a 8k limit you can simply do a product transfer that's a way around it. i agree if going overseas buy all your air fares and hotel bookings using it for travel insurance cover and simply use the 28 degrees or citibank visa debit for cash out at atms. does anyone know if this card covers car rental insurance overseas?

    • yes up to $3000 AUD excess for platinum.
Plenty of T&Cs. reading PDS is a must. (including you must take up insurance when you rent, only then will they pay the excess)

    • +1

yeh, I am planning to go travel soon, I spoke to Bankwest service reps yesterday. I can confirm, if you use the cash advance option, the 21.99% or something along that loan-shark interests rate will kick in as soon as you cashed out when your account is in debit, on top of that, it will charge you 2% or $4 for the ATO transaction fee.

If your account is in credit, they will charge you $4 ATM fee. I have friends telling me some people had their account in credit when cashed out, and still got charged the ridiculous interest rate. So make sure do pay attention on that if you do chose to use it as a cash out option.

  • How is this bargain? I signed up last year and the condition is the same.

28 degrees probably would work out better to be used for cashing out overseas. Since this cc will charge you $4 for withdrawing cash o/s using the card.

  • +2

People, if you're going to use free travel insurance (or even paid insurance), READ THE PDS.
No-one, not even the Bankwest/Zurich staff, will know all the T&Cs in their head.
You will have to do the research yourself. It's not that hard. I have a copy saved on my phone.

  • I'm keeping 28 Degrees mainly because of Purchase Protection ($10 price difference within 6 months instead of $75 within 21 days) and no international ATM withdrawal fees.

    • +1

bankwest platinum has extended warranty - 28degrees doesn't

      • +1

True, i feel extended warranty really ties you to a card for a while but the card is free. I've never used any CC extras but Purchase Protection and Merchandise Protection for 6 months seems more compelling than extended warranty especially with a couple of kids around. No fees at all while overseas is the selling point for me.

    • +1

      I would get both actually.

      • 28 degrees for overseas ATM withdrawals (and your account has been pre-loaded with credit)
      • Bankwest for overseas purchases (you then get up to 55 days interest free on your purchases)
  • +4

The exchange rate will be same as 28 degrees as both of them are from Mastercard.

The exchange rate charged will be as

    https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/index.h…

  • Fee free card with travel insurance and extend warranty, may use this to replace my coles master and go master cards, they are both pretty useless now. But as others said, this is neither a promotion nor a new product, so no bargain here.

  • +3

Interesting to see a lot of negs here - mainly saying that it is not a bargain. I love the fact that it is always 0 fees and is a good deal with no forex fees. Would you prefer that it costs 99$ and they make it available for 0$ for a special period - then it would classify as bargain … mhhh ??? I rather vote for something + which is always a good deal.

    • the reason there are guidelines on what is considered a bargain is to prevent spam and ppl just advertising things. Sure, ozbargain can be used to share good deals but personally I think this belongs in the forum, not posted as a "bargain".

definitely not saying it's a bad deal as I use this card myself along with my 28 degrees.

  • -2

24/7 account access via Bankwest Online Banking.

Wow too good to be true, no other banks provide this

  • yep i like the fact when you use it you can log in you can see some of the transaction details and your remaining balance straight away not like the 28 degrees card you have to wait about 3 days.

    • i agree this feature is awesome, it puzzles me how bankwest one of the lesser known banks can have this feature, but my westpac card takes 3-4days to showup, explain that to me big4 ???

      • Bankwest is CBA and CBA I believe have been leading the way with online bank and instant transaction info online. While the bankwest online banking does not have the bells a whistle like combanks netbanking is does all I need it to do.

Thanks guys for the info on Citibank the the widthdrawal changes on bankwest. I think I am in for 2 new credit cards.

        • Thanks guys for the info on Citibank the the widthdrawal changes on bankwest. I think I am in for 2 new credit cards.

bankwest and 28degrees? free citibank plus is visa debit not credit card

      • I believe bankwest leverages CBA infrastructure which allows for realtime transaction processing

        • Nope, Bankwest operates its own credit card, core banking and internet banking systems, all of which are real-time. Glad you like them!

  • I tried applying but got rejected for don't know what reason. I earn way above the threshold, have no loans, good credit history, and I have 2 AMEX cards. Anyone has any idea why?

    • idk. I got rejected by Bankwest a while back as well. Got a CBA card and another AMEX later in the same year. No idea why.

  • Hey Guys, Email me if anyone needs help with Bankwest Products like Homeloan , Credit card, Personal loans and accounts.

    • +4

What about help with punctuation? :)

    • Well activate your private messaging if anyone wants to contact you

    • yeah can't really email you when you private msg isnt turned on

  • +1

Not a bargain, so I'm not going to +, but I must say I've found the Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard + Amex Platinum Edge to be a great combo.
