I'd wait for Amazon's Seagate 4TB deal again, much cheaper and comes with a dock.

What's the consensus with the reliability of 4TB drives? A lot of reading here and whirlpool doesn't fill me with confidence.

    • Well, a good judgement for me is the ratio of Amazon's reviews with 5-stars to 1-stars. If more than half of the number of 5-star ratings has only 1-star (like in this case, ratio above 0.5) it's a sign for me to say NaaahAaaah.

    • @djglenmcbride.

You should Google WD's 4TB MyBook range. People have had some serious problems with it, especially data recovery. Something to do with something that's been installed on it. I can't find the weblink sadly.

  • Saw in store they are also doing a 3TB Seagate for $148

I never knew there was such a thing:

    Interesting.

  • CAN this be format for osx?

      any hard drive can.

Shhhh, Apple don't want their users knowing this! That way they can overcharge 500% for an exact same item in their own shiny cases. (Time Machine anyone?)

  • Officeworks have reduced their price from $199 to $197 (I guess so they don't have to beat lowest price by 5%).

  • Anyone know the model of the drive inside? They wouldn't dare put the Caviar Blacks in them and I don't think they make a Caviar Green drive in 4GB size yet so what could it be?

Pretty sure its a Hitachi (now owned by WD) 4tb drive.

I just picked one up at office works. Was going to grab the Seagate version, as I am not super keen on the Hitachi. It is definitely a Hitachi - HDS5C4040ALE630

Anyways they were out of the Seagate. Have cracked it open. Very easy to do with an old credit card. If it dies I'll have no problem getting it back into the case and it looking like it never left. I'm not running it in a NAS or anything, so I hope it will run ok.

If anybody intends to use this drive to create System Image backups via the Windows 7 Backup and Restore feature (and possibly Vista), then you need to REFORMAT the drive using the WD Quick Formatter for Windows. If you don’t reformat, you'll get backup errors (0x8078002A and 0x8007045D) when you run System Image backups (this is a known Windows problem on 2.5TB and larger external drives).

Link to WD Quick Formatter for Windows:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/386…

Note the warning about ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE WILL BE LOST, so back up any data before you format (you may also want to back up the WD supplied folders and EXEs). It appears the "Factory Default" Configuration option has changed, so select the Most Compatible (Vista or later required) option.

I have reformatted the 4TB drive and created a System Image successfully.
