I thought a Dutch oven was something else

    • Could be that too 😂

    • Behind bars

      • I wouldn't try farting in prison, look up someone called Fleece Johnson & what his thoughts on the phenomenon of passing wind behind bars…

    • I can give you a Dutch oven for free, wont cost 19.95
All I ask is to see the look on your face afterwards.. and the pink eye.

  • +1

Aldi had really good leather wipes

Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled

      • +3

It's cold enough to need heating at this time of year

        • The cheese is old and mouldy.

  • Are they all enameled? Or any just cast iron.

    • All enameled, even the cast iron grillpan.

  • +2

I highly rate the French pan. Good for foccacia too.

  • kmart 4L dutch oven is cheaper

    • This has 5 year warranty

I thought my wife loved it when I gave her a Dutch Oven. We've been divorced 4 years now

    • Can't believe you got down votes for a fart gag

  • +1

Not coming up on this date for me (VIC, Ballarat store).
I have the French pan from a previous deal and also highly recommend

      • When I do a search for cast iron on the Aldi website they come up, and are shown as being available from Saturday the 7th of June.

1.5L bread oven is.. really small?

    • +2

I have hopes it's referring to how much liquid would fit in the base (like the saucepan). The volume is really in the 'lid', but that's not counted.
I could absolutely be wrong though.

      • Going off the size of the knob in relation to the pot I'm going to say it's pretty small.

    • +1

If it is the same size as the Le Creuset one, it is 24cm wide.

      https://www.lecreuset.com.au/en_AU/p/cast-iron-bread-oven/CI…

    • +1

Yeah. Very small. That's something like a 300 - 400 g loaf. Smaller than a typical banana bread loaf size.

Benefit is you can fit multiple into the oven at the same time. It's not for me but some people prefer that.

  • I do like the quality of the 30cm frypan but so so heavy , a two hander for sure.
I got the grinder out with a wire wheel just to clean up the surface as well before seasoning .
Keep the oil up to it or the missus can throw away those iron supplements.

    • +1

S/S is all i use. Between cast iron pot and food far too heavy

  • Oh nice, will take a look in 2 weeks

  • +2

I’ve got a couple of these pans from a previous sale. They are very heavy and the handles soak heat and require mittens when cooking. Be aware that these are quite cumbersome and the missus won’t like them.
My Solidtekniks pan is far better designed and easier to use so those Aldi units just sit around as a spare

    • I friggin love my solidteknik pan.

The season is so stable compared to my lodge cast iron. I actually think I need to use a paddle grinder to resurface the lodge, but I can't be bothered because the ST is so much lighter

    • Love my solidteknics pan too, sold all my Lodge cast irons…
But for the price of one solidteknics pan, you can probably buy lots of cast iron…

  • Nice prices.

  • how long on average would the white coating last for before it needs replacement?

    • +2

If you look after it and don't hit it with a hamer, it could last 50 years plus easy. Enamel is not like non-stick

      • -1

Haha, I wish. This may apply to the better brands.

    • If you use a dish washer it will go in the bin after a few years. From past experience of Aldi pots.

  • +2

I got my dutch oven from Aldi a couple years back for $10 clearance.

Best kitchen pot purchase I have made. Has cooked multiple stews, casseroles, pasta sauce, curries. Not once has it failed in terms of consistency.

Enamel coating is fine as well, just discoloured from the cooking that’s been done in it.

    Worthwhile for the price.

    • Double check that the discolouring is not iron oxide bleeding through small crazing in the inner enamel. That has happened to 3 different Aldi enamel pots we have.(Yes they are used correctly and pampered when washing)

      • Thanks for that… I will check and see if it has crazed.

  • -1

Yeah nah. even when used and care for probably the inner enamel begins to craze in a short time.(Our experience)

    • +1

      Yeah nah… craze

You won't start a craze about this product with this kind of review.

    • Yeah they do after a year or two. Worth grabbing as a beater pot though or if you're building out a new kitchen set. I used mine for things like deep frying and rendering fat and it lasted a few years but had to throw it out when I found pieces of the enamel flaking off.

  • Are these enamel or cast iron?

are any of these good for making sourdough?

    • +2

Just buy the Dutch oven oval or round depending on the size and shape of your bread and use a bread sling something like this. Smear an little film of oil/fat on the base before putting it in the Dutch oven the base comes crusty as well.

      https://amzn.asia/d/auUYgix

I use a similar cheapo Dutch oven and the bread comes out perfect every time.

    • I'd do the oval dutch oven rather than the 'bread' one. Much larger and should be pretty straightforward to use. I've definitely burned my knuckles a few times lowering a loaf into the DO but you get used to it quickly and the performance of the DO bake is worthwhile! (especially with a few mists of water before you close the lid, to get the humidity up!)

  • Thanks OP. For cooking steaks, which is better, fry pan or grill pan ?

    • Grill

    Thanks

My French pan has had a lot of use, mostly for one pot meals baking potatoes, other vegetables and salmon. The food comes out beautifully caramelised and delicious. Easy one person meal. I fill it with warm soapy water and leave in the oven while I eat, then wash it with detergent and finish with Gumption. No crazing. It’s a few years old now, from when they had the matte black colour.

  • Le creuset aren't that fantastic but the warranties are amazing. Ive brought a large crockpot back for replacement after the enamel chipped during regular use twice.

  • +1

Looking to get healthier and replace all non-stick and cancer causing pans.

The internet keeps suggesting cast iron, but these have enamel coating? Not sure if good option?

    • Best to avoid the enamel then, especially on cheap ones. It could have unhealthy ingredients that could leach out and/or break up and come off into your food over time. Also could chip off from utensil use if it weakens over time. Raw cast iron is the one to get.

    • These will be substantially better for you than the non-stick. But I'd really recommend the IKEA Sensuell frying pan - it's all clad and works great for the price (or 4x the price). SS takes a little getting used to, but the other day I cooked scrambled eggs in it, and had perfectly cooked eggs without anything sticking whatsoever. They're great!

      https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/sensuell-frying-pan-stainless-s…

      • Sensual frying pan? Are IKEA taking the piss?

but the other day I cooked scrambled eggs in it, and had perfectly cooked eggs without anything sticking whatsoever.

What's the secret to this? A lot of oil?

        • +1

Yesssss I love me some sensual cooking…

I've been learning by watching videos etc, but mainly it's about letting it heat up first, to the point where water will bead up and dance when dropped into the pan, rather than just steaming away. Then turn the heat down to medium-low, add your fat (I use butter for eggs) and let that get all melted and shimmering, swirl it around a little so it gets up the side walls of the pan as well, and then you add your eggs. Takes an extra few minutes, but while the pan is heating up, I'm getting my eggs ready and dropping my toast.

The pan is also really forgiving on heating - if you leave it on full heat for a couple extra minutes, it's not the end of the world. In fact I was once trying to boil it off for a while with vinegar and dishsoap (before I learned about Barkeepers Friend) and accidentally let it sit on full heat for 20 minutes completely empty. I haven't noticed any issues with it despite this.
