1040

I never used the paid Skype service before but 50% off sounds too tempting regardless if I know what it dose or not.

  • Good deal

Not so good a deal IMO at least for anyone
who rings OFTEN or LONG to 1 or more other countries.

Better value comes, IMO, from Skype Subscriptions
(best value if you choose a 12-month Subscription)

…which you can get at Skype.com (for from 1 other
    country to over 40 countries).

If you choose the "all" (over 40) countries, you'll
also get incoming phone numbers (so folks can ring you)
in your choice of 3 other countries from Skype's list,
    pr last time I checked.

THAT's were the great value is IMO.

Skype runs on smartphones, etc. so, you could put a
12-month -unlimited- all Subscription on a shared
smartphone (eg at home or in the office or 'hood) or
on all your computers at an office, to share it
across several users (not to make calls concurrently,
    of course).

Total cost was US$ 149 / year, last time we checked.

    not

    • +25

Well, on the enlarge image it says that you can use credit to buy subscription, and thats a really good deal.

    • +5

Ease up on the Enter key.

      • +28

Lets put it into Haiku format then:

        Subscription cheaper
        Only one-fifty dollars
        Cards still a bargain

    • regardless if you prefer to use Skype credit for calls, or Skype subscriptions it's a pretty good deal, particularly since you can use Skype credit to purchase subscriptions if i'm not mistaken. Correct me if i'm wrong…

    • +1

Against your subscription > credit argument, I don't bother with subscriptions since I'm a really light user. I use no more than about $20 per year.

      • Well subscriptions are good if you make a lot of calls but this does not have to be necessarily long. This is because the flagfalls are too expensive

  • I got the free one last month. Just came through :)

  • You can use credit for subscriptions. Did this with 7 Eleven 50% off deal last month.

    • How does it work? Can I combine the cards to use?

  • I guess MS is really pushing Skype hard since it replaced Messenger and should, in principle, be on most Windows desktops.

    • +1

MS should just drop the calling rates by ~30% instead of playing around with gift cards discounts like apple. calling mobiles overseas on amaysim to some countries is 12c/min but on skype it's 13c/min + flagfall… so this deal really makes skype a more attractive alternative for now.

      • I know. Amaysim is only 6c to some countries. But being an OzB'er I call for free because the other party has Skype too. However Amaysim rates for some other countries are still high, e.g. 29c to Europe. Skype could come in handy there sometimes. Anyway the credit doesn't expire and I could use it some day for calling while on holiday, so I'm going to buy $10 worth for $5.

        • I'm sure that you can do much better with a VoIP provider. But I'm a very casual user of paid VoIP. I think I last recharged Skype some 3-4 years ago. $5 will simply be my cheap way of ensuring that I don't have to pay for an expensive overseas phone call when I'm on holiday and I need to call home. Roaming is expensive, getting a SIM overseas is only worth it if you are there for long, and I might want to do this on a hotel's Internet terminal where I can't install VoIP software.

        • Have you tried comparing Skype to the rates of other VoIP providers (like PennyTel)?

        • Unless you have a subscription, Rebtel is has better rates for some countries(PAYG skypes is 25.8c/min to Phillipines compared to Rebtel 10.6c/min)

  • I bought new PC on Sat
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/100456
Can't even load my skype account onto it (doesn't MS own skype?).
    Guess it's just another Win8 glitch….

    • +3

Skype works fine with Windows 8. Skype has 2 editions for Windows 8. I mostly use the desktop edition, but the modern UI one works fine too.
You can download the desktop version by choosing "Skype for Windows Desktop" link at the bottom of the download page.

    • works fine for me

    • +1

      Are you sure you double-clicked?

  • -1

Even at 50%, Skype call rates are still higher than some of the other VOIP providers like Dellmont. But better than paying 100% I guess.. lol.

  • -2

Skype used to be great and MS just makes it worse. It is getting really unstable since they bought it over and keep pushing updates. As usual, MS is really good at screwing things up.

    • works perfectly for me be it on my surface ipad iphone or desktop

    • +1

What updates have you seen? There were only two or three in the last few months. Still works fine for me for free calls. This on a PC, BTW, not smartphone.

    • +1

My experience is not on the free service. I have skype subscription service such as SkypeNumber.
I have been using it for more like past 7 years and it is just getting worse since MS take over.

Incoming calls are always not coming through. The skype shows you everything is fine, connection is ok, but calls will not come through until your signOff and sign on again.

      • sounds like a network issue at your end - I have used it everywhere around the world in last few months no issues. Sounds like you need to change ISP/hardware

        • -1

thats my own experience, happens to my skype at home, in the office, on mobile.
just dont understand why people need to neg this.

        • i'll give you a plus, i have the same issue with my home/mobile/ipad skype.

    • +2

Works great for me on desktop / laptop (Win 7 and Win 8) and android phone. Haven't had any issues yet.

Skype sucks when it comes to leaving offline messages. In the old msn, you were able to actually leave someone offline messages. With skype, the message is "suspended" until you and the other person are both online, then it will go through to them. What's the point of having offline messaging then if you're both online?!

    /vent

    • Hmm? Never had an issue with leaving an offline message. The other party sometimes tells me by another channel that they got the message. Also I have received offline messages from other parties. You sure you're not referring to the notification, which of course you don't see until you login.

    • Not just for offline messages, it sucks for messaging period.! Half of the messages don't deliver on time even when both parties are online, makes things worse if you are logged in from multiple devices.

      • What about file transfer, does that get delayed too? They both use the same channel so if one works so should the other.

  • Does anyone know if the vouchers have an expiry? And also if we can spend a portion of the value on subscription and save the remaining the renew the subscription when it expires later? Thanks!

  • Are there any larger cards available then $25?

Also, can i subscribe and then just cancel after using it for a month or two?

    • Yes you can cancel it anytime you want, and the subscription will stay active until the end of subscribed period. I do it all the time. Just make sure you don't tick auto recharge for the credit, and cancel the subscription before the direct debit day.

  • I bought last time from 7-11, only 25% off, and it does have expiry date of 1 year after purchase.

    • +1

It seems once the voucher is redeemed, the credit won't expire as long as you keep using the service. It will be deactivated in 180 days since the service was last used but can be reactivated via https://secure.skype.com/account/credit-reactivate

If you buy these and take overseas for a trip can you claim the GST at TRS ?

I read that "services" are not given refunds of GST, like Warranty, would Skype credits be conisdered a service or a good ?

    • Is there something tangible? If not, then it's not a good. You might be able to claim it as a work expense if you were using for work calls overseas.

      • +1

Well its a gift card like itunes , pretty sure itunes you can get teh GST back.

….wonder who you ask to find out?

        • +2

Gift cards and vouchers would seem to be specifically excluded at the quoted site: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp

        • +5

Correct me if I am wrong but AFAIK GST is not charged on gift cards but on the goods you purchase using gift cards, otherwise it'll just be double dipping with GST.

        • +1

Quick remove the comment in case teh govt see your message and like your idea! :-)

    • You might be able to. Keep in mind, you'd need a total of at least $300 on the tax invoice. That's a LOT of Skype credit! haha

  • I could not find annual subscriptions at skupe Web site, only monthly ones.
Can anyone post a link please.

    • +1

      $71.28

      • Thanks. I did not know that I need to login.

  • Damnit bought it last time during the 7-11 25% off wish I could refund it and buy this…

  • Hey Guys,

I'm looking to buy a yearly subscription of around $281. Is it possible to pay the whole amount using the $25 * 12 skype card. If this is possible then it would be half the price $140 and I can buy 12 cards from target.

Any idea does the subscription accepts multiple skype cards for a yearly subscription?

    • +1

I think you can, recharge those skype card first, then you got $300 balance. Then when you purchase the yearly subscription, select payment method as "Skype credit". I tried with 3 month subscription, it works. So, should be working on yearly subscription.

      • Hi Jason,

Thanks for the advice. I did what you told and it worked. I have a active monthly subscription so instead of paying for the whole year I paid for next month and it worked. I would be recharging it every month for a whole year with this half price.

        Thank you OP for posting.

        Cheers

  • I have changed location to Adelaide, and it said that skype cards not found.
Is it not valid for Adelaide ?
