THL W8 Quad Core phone ($116)
http://dx.com/p/thl-w8-android-4-1-quad-core-bar-phone-w-5-0…

Update:

http://dx.com/mayhalfprice?utm_source=dx&utm_medium=cdn&utm_…

According to this, they will be rotating the deals throughout the day (800 SKUs with total quantity of 40,000) to cover a bunch of other products too. Check back whenever you can to see if theres anything new!

Update 2:

http://dx.com/mayhalfprice/Default/ShoppingList

They have pushed out another list of more items! It does verify the theory that the initial page was for DX AU deliveries whilst this is the International 50% off section. Please be aware that there will be longer delivery times for this since it needs to be shipped directly from China as opposed to the DX AU (which apparently has warehouse in Perth).

Update 3:
Offer is pretty much officially "Ozbargained" with the only remaining stock to be either very specialist products (Spare battery for product x), Seasonal products (Christmas), or stuff that not many people want. The only thing I am hoping for is that they can fulfill all orders so everyone is happy.

DX has subtly stated however, (Broken English) "If the customers who participate in this activity are more than expected which results in lack of product supply, we have to process refund for the oversold items, please kindly understand." which may account for some people's Paypals reported refunded against.

Update 4:

Have to apologise in advance to anyone who doesnt get the stock for this deal. Despite being the OP and putting the order through before others, I have now received a cancellation against my two orders (W8 and PD10). It is seemingly like a lottery to get stock. Very very disappointed. :(

Update 5:

After a disappointing weekend, DX has now come back to affected customers with a voucher that's worth 15% of the original total order. So, if your order was $200, then they will give you back $30 worth as a rebate in compensation to be used in DX. Apparently the stock is still available - but not it has changed to a different SKU but they are offering 15% off the original price. This is pretty beneficial if your original order was expensive (and hence you can get back a higher rebate value) - but typically most would only have done a $200 order with $30 rebated.

The new link is here: http://dx.com/l/au-direct/2013-02/special-items.aspx

As you can see, the deal is nowhere near as good as before. However, it is up to you as an individual to see if it is still good value enough to continue making the purchases.

    • Hi bchliu, I got mine this morning as well, it's all good but the ROM is 2GB not 4GB as stated. Not sure it only happened on me or everyone, can you check urs plz?

      • Yes.. that is correct as Android itself requires about 0.5GB for the OS and another 1GB is used for the System partition (where your applications install into). You get about 1.5GB left that is formatted as FAT32 as "SDCard".

This is an issue and something I was highlighting even from my original posts. However, there are ways around this using a combination of a custom ROM:

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249808

And use of this tool called Folder Mount to move the Internal SDCard folders out to the External SDCard

        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.f…

That should get you a ton of space to do things on. Does require an External SDCard (recommend 32GB+)

    • How do you get it for $168??

      • $198 (15% off) and used the $31 voucher that they refunded.. Yes, its still $50 more but still pretty sweet for the price

        • How do you get 15% off $198? It is showing up as $198 in my cart

        • $198 is after 15% off.

  • just got my graphics tablet and waterfall tap.

    • Who delivered it?

      • i wasnt out the front, but i think it was toll. had it delivered to work and reception signed for them.

  • So the W8 now at $198 is still a pretty good deal then?

Might get it before dollar cashes more

    • use 28degrees card and you can save a few bucks.

got my PD80 in my hands! :)

    • +2

I hope it explodes in your hands - he says bitterly whilst turning away and fighting back the tears.

    • Can you let us know the quality of the product, esp. the screen and responsiveness of the UI?

      cheers

      • see my comments a few lines below. won't have a proper chance to examine it until I get home from work but a quick unwrapping and play has impressed me so far :)

for the ~$120 price - very satisfied!

        • cool, thanks

  • how does it seem - you could be the first to review here on newly arrived stock :-)

    • +2

well looks good so far. not going to get a chance to charge it & turn it on until I get home tonight (no power adaptor in the office). but so far so good!
edit: couldnt help myself. turned it on and retina display looks amazing (as expected). will have a proper play tonight though

      • +1 for being first. just curious did toll tracking update past [ erskinville-australia| arrived hub] before you received it? mines stuck on that.. someone mentioned earlier that they might have shipped the pd80's on the same plane :/

        • I live in P-town, so it was flown from Hong Kong to Perth. Looks like the cargo plane arrived in the early hours of this morning.

        • ahh okay okay, sydney will probably receive ours tomorrow.. for some reason assumed you lived on the east coast :/

        • I doubt we'll receive it tomorrow as it still has to go through HK then to Sydney. More like 48 hours wait possibly Wednesday for CBD customers.

        • what does your tracking say? :/ mine says its already in Sydney.. erskineville at tolls hub- so I assumed it would be delivered tomorrow

        • Mine looks it came from a different route

  • Mine arrived today, however I was at uni.

    Scheduled a redelivery this week

    • They have a new thing (I think?) where you can get them to re-deliver it to a local newsagency, and you can then pick it up from there whenever you want. I've done that the last couple of times when I haven't been home.

      • Yeah, that was an option as well.
        There was 3 options
        1) Redeliver
        2) Pick up from Toll Depot
        3) Arrange pick up at local agency

        • All my packages arrived today

  • Those with the w8

Let us know how it is with stock ROM.

    Thanks

    • Stock ROM is light.. a BIG change from Samsung's Touchwiz. I got about half my normal apps installed and I'm left with about 450MB of free RAM (the same on the GalNote was about 200MB free). It is very impressive for the price for sure.

I'm going to play around with it for about a week on Stock and then move to the GravityMod2 CFW with the repartitioning mod (2GB System) next week.

Also, I am using 2100Mhz TPG (Optus) at the moment and so far no drop outs, Data is FAST and very usable. So Its pretty safe even for Optus Users regardless of the lack of 900Mhz (it does have NextG/Voda 850Mhz however).

      • I went straight to GravityMod2 out of the box. I haven't had any issues at all and the process was really easy. Follow the instructions here:

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249808

        • How is your GPS reception? I'm on the stock 4.1.2 and its taking ages to get GPS.. I am thinking there is a bug with WIFI locations and AGPS thats stopping the 10 second "rough location" lock..

        • Doesn't seem to be working, but I'll have a look later. I know I've had issues with other phones after flashing and it took some time to get gps right.

        • I got mine fixed by going to Settings > Location Access and then untick/tick the WIFI @ Mobile Network Location checkbox. Once you enable this, a Google Privacy message pops up and asks you to give permission for anonymous stats to be sent to Google.

It was ticked by default but I think it wasnt working because I didnt give permission before hand..

  • those living in Sydney with tablet orders can you pls advise when you get yours delivered.

  • anyone know if the W8 came with a screen protector on it? as i dont want to wrap my tool twice!

    • Yes it does - but they gave me the matte cover instead of the clear/glossy one. I dont like the matte (as it makes it too fuzzy), so I'm going to buy a separate Clear/Glossy one instead from Fleabay.

      • mine came clear…

there was one pre-applied and another in the box! so i got 2 which was a nice suprise.

  • just missed delivery for my w8,30 min ago, while driver didn't knock the door, only left a notice then went away, terrible toll, hopeless. they promise will delivery tomorrow and will knock the door, no new toy for tonight, good luck for me.

    • +1

      "driver didn't knock the door"

Can't believe the driver just expected the door to be opened before he/she left the notice.

    • I just notice on the little notice, Toll say they charge for re-delivery. anyone know how much it will cost & who gonna pay for it.

      • Whenever I've had to call them for a re-delivery, they've always said that there will be no charge.

I'm assuming that as long as you don't stuff them around (ask to have the same item re-delivered multiple times), it will be free.

      • Yeah, it's free

      • It's free for sure.

  • Those who ordered the PD80-HD, any of you planning to (and are experienced at) rooting the device?

  • PD30: Arrived Friday and am happy with it for the price.
32GB Micro SD: Still stuck in Payment Confirmed stage: Have not contacted Dx yet.

    • Are you able to give some first impressions of the PD30?

      • +1

Not bad for the price. It appears to have root access. Nice size. Screen is a bit reflective. I have has 2 times i had to reboot it. Once it lost audio and the other time it froze. For $80 i am happy with it so far.

        • Cheers mate ;)

  • Another PD80-HD here. Looks like I'll be getting it tomorrow….hopefully.

    THL W8 - initial Impressions

    Device:
Very similar to the GS4 - even put it next to one at the Telstra Shop during lunchtime and its very very close. It is a bit thicker (@1mm) but its still very much the same. Screen is nice to look at and the pixels are small for a true 720p experience. However, Samsung does win more with contrasts and better AMOLED technologies. Sound is LOUD and overall build is very solid. Clips of the case and back are good and gaps are very small (unlike the HTC ONE).

    Calls/Signal:
Using TPG (Optus) @ 2100Mhz. So far, no drop outs and I've been going in and out of Shopping centre today for lunch. reception is good and clear

    Performance:
ANTUTU scored 12600 or so. This is about the same as a Nexus 7 (that runs 100Mhz Faster). It also is double the score of my Motorola Razr as well on the same Mhz. It has not slowed down in some of the tests I ran through. Apps installed very quickly. Ran a couple of games (Angry birds and Temple Run OZ) and very smooth.

    Camera:
the 12Mpix camera is very nice - but I only taken pics of indoors at this stage (MY DESK) and its not bad - although I do need proper sunlight to really do it justice. My old Nokia N8 still is better though. Shots are very quick and saves very quickly (unlike the previous gen phones) and as quick as the Nexus 4. Also has HDR mode in the stock app for you camera Buffs that want the extra contrasts.

    Battery:
Charging - you get 2 batteries for this price and both rated at 2000mAH

    Other:
    1) Comes with Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - for some reason some sites say 4.2 but mine is still 4.1.2 (not too much of an issue really)
    2) Cant use the home button to wake from sleep - this may be good for some, bad for others but definitely is good taking it out of the pocket.
    3) Charger is a Euro type - use a converter or get any other 1A USB Charger will do
    4) Android / launcher is very light and not that much different from the stock Android. They have made small customisations to it like the Samsung-like panel on the pull down blind that is extremely convenient to toggle settings.

    Opinion:

VERY impressed - even if I had to pay $168 for it. You really cant get much better than this for this price.

    • my android version is 4.2.1 so there are at least 2 different roms being sent out.

the difference is probably negligible though, i'm thinking of installing a custom one anyway, though the stock is very light and fast too.

    • I would rather pay a bit more for 1080p + 16G rom version. $264.40

      http://dx.com/p/thl-w8-quad-band-android-4-2-bar-phone-w-5-0…

The THL W8+ is slower, as it houses the exact same hardware and clock speeds, and struggles with the 1080p higher resolution…

        • The UMI X2 Smartphone 5.0 Inch 1080P FHD Screen Gorilla Glass 2G 32G MTK6589 Quad Core Android 4.2 is much better. $299

          Review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krBWMXyLFLo

        • Yeah.. but its almost twice as expensive though.

Actually I cant talk - I still have a Neo N003 coming in next month (Ultimate version). That is even better than the Umi X2 since it also has native USB OTG and HDMI out (via MHL).

Horses for Courses - one could also argue that the SGS4 is also better than everything - only 4 times the price of the W8!

        • I'm guessing you've read through this: Article

        • Thats using the old Specs of the Neo (March). The updated specs are 1080p screen. Also interesting to note that most of these will be updated to the Turbo version of the MTK6589T chip (1.5Ghz).

        • I am still thinking whether I should just buy the S4 i9500 black from Kogan for a low $658 delivered. There are some interesting features I like such as two camera recording at the same time and air gesture etc…

I don't want to wait a month to get the Neo N003 ultimate version.

        • The S4 is absolutely definitely better than the Neo N003.. but for more than double the price for a better processor? Not sure about that..

        • Two things I like about the N003 Ultimate version are it comes with a 32G rom and 60% cheaper than S4.

Check out this thread about those 3 stooges defending DX's 50% sales issue. It's worth a laugh. :)

          http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1303684?page=1

        • +1

Yeah.. I've had enough of those fwits who demean other customers trying to lodge their concerns. They really do not have the powers to be mods and when they get to a stage where they cannot argue anymore, they pull out statements saying "Dont post on a Public board if you cannot handle it" reasoning. They really are crooks that are on DX's payroll to lure off customers really.

The problem is that their forums are community driven (even though DX owns it) and are moderated by what they classify as non-staff. It basically isnt any different from the old-west laws where the Sheriff was self appointed due to his gun and weapons. It was a "Kid, if you dont like this town, then get the hell away from here" attitude.

On the Neo - I'm really enjoying my W8 at the moment and still a bit undecided about whether to continue my order (with Lightake - a good DX alternative). I have an option to cancel it in the next couple of weeks if I dont want it.. (Neo N003 vs THL W8 = bigger RAM, bigger storage, slightly better camera and better screen. Otherwise, its pretty much the same).

See how I go with it. Worst case I can offload my W8 to my family or something :)

        • @bchliu, where did you order your Neo n003 from?

USBG OTG + MHL are instant winners for me and deff put it leagues ahead of the others.

Edit: Ah, you answered it in a later comment; Lightake
          Damn, only wcdma 2100mhz?

        • The specs on Lightake were the early preliminary specs. The official ones released by Neo from their Chinese site states 850/2100 Mhz WCDMA so it should be cool with Telstra and Vodafone. However, I can say that my W8 has been working really well in the past two days of use even on the 2100 Optus network.

Yes, I got it from Lightake. I am a bit skeptical about other websites who do it for $20 less or something. Lightake, Meritline (Merimobiles) and to a lesser extent Focalprice are the only DX alternatives that I'd do (simply based on previous experience).

Stock is due in on the 25th June as officially stated on Neo's site too.

  • I got my W8 on friday, and it kept me busy…, still playing with this monstrous device, despite my kungfu grip on the phone, I've got to give it to that someone I bought it for in the first place… lol

Fantastic phone, both in the aesthetics and hardware specs, and the price well I still can't get over it…

All I can say is Thanks DX…

    • +1

Shush you.. $118 is definitely a Bargain.. :P Dont rub it in.. haha

    • Elijah - what firmware are you on? 4.1.2 or 4.2? Can you test the GPS on yours? I'm having a slight locking problem on mine in GPS apps (eg. Google Maps).

      • Yea bchliu I'm running 4.1.2 as well and I read the post on Whirlpool about the GPS Fix…, yet to give it a shot will let you know how it goes and if i discover something…

        • +1

I noticed that mine didnt do a WIFI lock for Location lookups like other Android phones. It just took forever for GPS to get a lock as a result and the AGPS wasnt working as such. I managed to fix it - not from the Whirlpool/XDA GPS Fix but by going to Settings > Location Access and then untick/tick the WIFI @ Mobile Network Location checkbox. Once you enable this, a Google Privacy message pops up and asks you to give permission for anonymous stats to be sent to Google.

Normally this is done right at the beginning when you turn on a phone. I cant remember it asking on mine and hence why I think it was set "on" but I never agreed to the anonymous stats so that it wont work properly as such.

After this change, I'm getting the WIFI locks fine..

I just saw my PD80HD being despatched from HK, still a few days to wait…

Meanwhile, for those who bought Freelander stuff, if you want to update your firmware to the latest, please visit the following link which is the official thread for up-to-date Freelander tablet firmwares.

    http://223.4.236.214/bbs/showtopic-13607.aspx

For those who bought the PD80HD, please copy and search for the following in the webpage "PD80睿智(2.0)英文版" and click the corresponding link. PD30 uers try "PD30睿智(2.0版本)"

The links redirect you to Baidu cloud storage service which is supposed to be safe. Click the button with a down arrow and you are ready to go. The package includes a .img file which is the firmware, a .msi file which is the updater, and a .doc file which is the guideline(in Chinese) for updates. The updater itself is in English.

    Enjoy!

    • Wow, thanks for that !

What Android Version does this updated firmware run on the PD80HD ? Might get the CM10 or AOKP rom.

Anything useful on the following pages ? I'll probably read them with a translator :)

      • No idea on the versions as I still have not received my tablet yet. According to Google, the Allwinnertech A31 Chip (the quad-core cpu for the tablet) has recently updated to ver. 2.0 and improved some stability/4K video playback compatibility issues. More info here:

        http://www.allwinnertech.com/en/product/A31.html

Root for these devices should be pretty straightforward.

        • Interesting to see it's compatible with windows 8.

    • Hi doubletoplei,

I downloaded the file you have mentioned but PhoenixSuit and WinZip can't seem to unzip/open the .img file. Any help on that? Thank you!

      • That's because WinZip sucks, use WinRar to extract all the files.

Install PhoenixSuit, choose upgrade firmware, then within the phoenixsuit select the image file.

P.S. you don't open the .img file directly, only via phoenixsuit.

  • another happy w8 owner here.

my only complaint is that the screen isn't centred exactly on mine :(
its a bit off so i have a tiny, tiny bit of the screen hidden on the bottom left corner and some black on 2 other corners. overall though i'm very impressed by the build quality, especially taking into account the price i paid and the fact it's a chinese phone.

    • Just install Go Ex Launcher and you can customized more items within the device.

  • MY PD80-HD just arrived in Hong Kong, sooooon!

  • Got my Ditter v12 today - pretty dissapointed:

    1. The side ports for the micro USB and SD card slots are both covered with plastic - looks like the holes weren't punched through so I can't use those unless I open the device up and break off the plastic.

    2. Booting it up and connecting it to the TV out of the box doesn't even work - it comes up with the Android robot lying on its back with a red triangle exclamation error symbol - some research online says that this is the entry to Stock Recovery so looks like this stick wasn't rooted properly. This could probably be fixed if I can connect it to my computer and try rooting it again…but since the micro USB port is blocked by plastic, I can't even connect it to my computer.

Anyone else have similar experiences or did I just get unlucky?

    • Hi JTL.
I also got my Ditter today and was able to boot successfully.
I confirm that the slots on the side of the stick are covered and i cannot use them (ie the micro USB and SD card). I tried to using the other micro usb on the buttom of the device and plug it into my laptop. It didnt spawn any mass storage option :(

Did you get an english user manual ? i didnt

      • I think you need to use a separate power and storage cable - so we need 2 USB cables going into the Ditter but since our side ports are blocked, we can't connect the supplied micro USB cable to the computer, and since the bottom micro USB port is being used to supply power we don't have a port to connect the 2nd cable…

One solution to the above is if you had a USB male to male cable to connect it into the normal sized USB port…but still not being able to use the side micro USB and SD card slot would limit the functionality of the stick by a lot.

        I got a manual…but it's clearly for a tablet and not a TV stick…

    • That is disappointing! The description on dx clearly states and shows the TF / micro SD, etc. I was hoping this would be a rebadged imito mx1, which looks identical and has good reviews, but it sounds like it's not…

    • Mine works great, I use a wireless mouse to control the interface, but to be able to connect with a hard drive, looks like I need to get a Bluetooth mouse, didn't know it required touch screen until I read the instruction.
My SD Card Slot works just fine.

    • Mine keeps crashing at first - until I decided to use the supplied charger.

So don't use USB port on TV or use an iPhone/Android charge plug. Use the one supplied. Though I need to use an adapter because it is Jap plug.

Manual is in english but for Tablet.

      No plastic cover issues.

$28 well spent, so far :)

    • Got mine yesterday. TF and extra USB are not covered and working OK. I disassembled it to see what model it actually is - mine is a rebadged UG007 II / Imito MX1 so should work well with Imito or Finless 1.7 ROM. I will report back if anyone interested.

      • Would be interested how you go with Custom Rom. Is Google TV an "app"/ROM that can be loaded to Ditter? Read some gripes that Ditter is "android tablet on a TV" and not really Google TV

        • All the ug007 / mx1 roms install fine and run ok but crashing and boot looping now. I'll have a look at power supply like others are suggesting.

        • How did you go with the ug007 roms ? All working as expected now ?

    • +1

I also had the ports covered in plastic. Ended up taking mine apart and turns out they inserted the board the wrong way around. Swapped it over the right way and now the ports are aligned with the slots.

Remove the screw near the usb port and it should slide out

RE: Reboot loops. Definately a power issue but also try changing the cable if it still doesn't boot. Used an ipad charger with a samsung microusb with no luck but swapping to my HTC cable worked fine

      Cheers

I got the 32gb nexus 7 for $199 instead. Very happy with it!

Also with my $40 compensation I bought a cat bed, an iphone usb cable and a usb tv tuner :D

    • I got the 32gb nexus 7 for $199 instead.

where did you get that from?

      • OW PM TGG

      • Yeah sorry i meant $195. Deals over now though

  • Found a very interesting "Non Standard Android" type option in THL W8's Settings.

I know a few people have complained about the lack of SD Storage on the W8 and that apps will hardly fit these days (especially with those Gameloft Behemoths of 1.5GB+ per game).

Under Settings > Storage, you can select whereabouts the applications will install to. If you have a large SD card in there, you can select SD Card as being the default application storage and it will basically start to write OBB and Data files to this location! This eliminates the requirements for 3rd party apps like FolderMount or GL2SD or anything similar to do this.

Very surprising option.. definitely not standard on the branded Droids..

  • Well after being so lazy to join this, while using it daily for so long….. my first post :)

    • Same as mine. This is the Sydney bound flight I suppose. Now it should have been off loaded after 13 hours or so. Com'on Toll get running with it :)

received my 80hd 2 mind ago.
the build quality seems quite good (certainly not the best). retina screen looks great! for what i paid, i cant be happier.

sorry for all those whose orders were canceled by dx and otherwise would wait for the delivery patiently.

to some of the others………….. as kugs said before: patience is a virtue.
