    • That's not available in my area though not that I live anywhere rural.
This also includes a network modem aswell, just saying as it's not stated in the bargain.

      • True, forgot to mention that it might not be available for everyone

You can't compare TPG to Bigpond for speed.

      • both are adsl2+

ive had my tpg for 5 years

        my speedtest is http://www.speedtest.net/result/2770001139.png

        15 down, 0.87 up

      • Speed over any ADSL is going to depend far more on exchange distance than ISP.

Also, a (rural) friend's ADSL drops from 3Mbps down to 0.3Mbps during peak hours, entirely due to congestion on the exchange's backhaul. ISP won't help you there either.

    • Well, if you have Cable 3.0 access, this deal's better

Edit: didn't realise it was for ADSL2 only, althought it's worth a shot asking for those looking for a discounted cable deal

This Telstra service is not 100% comparable to TPG. TPG don't provide a REAL landline, they provide a sort of hybrid VoIP service run from the phone exchange. They even make you sign a waiver saying they have basically no responsibility to provide a reliable service. The service is patchy at best. We regularly miss phone calls because the phone simply doesn't ring even though we're home, or says it's engaged when it's not.

DO NOT USE TPG IF YOU NEED A RELIABLE HOME PHONE. Often if one of their services goes down, they ALL go down. I missed a very urgent call from a doctor once and ended up in hospital when simply adjusting my medicine would have avoided it, and one night my wife had to sleep at the airport because her plane arrived a day early and my TPG mobile, landline and internet were all broken for about five hours at the same time, and she had no way of contacting me.

Telstra have terrible customer service too, but it's not as bad as TPG, and at least with Telstra you're getting a real home phone. TPG's poorly conceived billing system is also amateur at best.

  • looking for a new bundle since my optus one went up - the tpg offer looks good, just wish you didn't have to lock in for 2 years.

  • Bargain if you're a diehard telstra fan, not a bargain on OzBargain.

Haha yeah but the one thing you forget is Telstra is run by a mentally stable CEO and won't cut you off for complaining.

Exehell on the other hand are a joke, JL changes his plans other month when he is on the rags and has no understanding of customer service basics. Also I will hazard a guess that those plans are on Optus DSLAMs which tend to have their backhaul oversold and lower sync rates than Telstra's DSLAMs. Even TPG tend to provision better backhaul than Optus.

      • He may have a little trouble with that now, unless exetel has extended the wireless range to reach 6 foot under ground.

  • is telstra adsl2+ have a faster connection then other provider?

    • Generally speaking, no significant difference in speed at all. Even if they are using different DSLAMs they will share the backhaul at some point.

What you should check is how good their service is, if you're going to be locked into them for 2 years. Whirlpool is a good resource. Telstra's reputation isn't great, but generally they will get you sorted out in the long run. Can't say the same for TPG (and I've had customers who've had appalling trouble with them). Exetel have a reasonable rep however, unless you're a complete novice who will need a lot of hand-holding.

      • No speed difference?! Then a big NO to Telstra.

      • Telstra doesn't share backhaul with other suppliers. Not sure what you are claiming?
Telstra offers pretty low contention for internet access, so you are more likely to get the rated line speed. Suppliers like Dodo, for example, oversubscribe their network so they can offer cheaper, slower services, although they could reach their stated speeds when there are few other customers using it.
In regional and rural areas, and even some capital city locations, Telstra is the only network supplier. Even if you buy from another ISP, the link back to the capital city is provided by Telstra, with just the final hop to the Internet supplied by the 3rd party ISP.

      • Exetel have a woeful reputation. Even TPG are better in the customer service stakes and actually operate like a professional company should.

Also in my experience unless you have the misfortune of being of a under-provisioned RIM then Telstra usually is one of the best providers. iiNet and Internode in the past have also been good for speed (unsure how they fare since the acquisition).

  • I'm with Exetel, 200GB peak, unlimited off peak for $57.50 a month (add $15 to bundle phone rental).
This is also using Telstra's ADSL 2+ infrastructure.
Not sure whether going through a wholesaler vs Telstra directly impacts performance.

    • It can, prime example would be Dodo.
No idea about Exetel, have you done a ozspeedtest.com and how far from the exchange are you by line?

      • Im also on exetel. I used to be with telstra. Im fairly far from the exchange so this might be a bit biased but I've had no speed difference between exetel and telstra adsl2+

I was really happy with my TPG ADSL service 18 months ago, constantly getting 8.5Mbs.
6 months passed, drops to 6 Mbs.
Another 4 months, drops to 4 Mbs.
Another 3 months, drops to 3 Mbs.
And this is after many hours spent on the helpdesk to complaint and also sorting out periodical drop outs. The lowest speed I have, after some drop outs was 0.5 Mbs)
My guess is if you go with TPG, just don't sign a contract. As more people get onboard with them you will need to move elsewhere.

  • I don't think that it's a very good deal, as the internet speed is not desirable:
    Quoting Telstra:

    HOME BROADBAND SPEEDS
    • Elite ADSL plans provide maximum download speeds up to 20Mbps
to eligible customers in selected areas (ADSL2+) and up to 8Mbps in
many other areas (ADSL) but average speeds will be lower.

I am on the Telstra staff friends and relatives bundle: same price, same features, but the speed is ULTIMATE (Up to 100Mbps) rather than Elite.

    • Congratulations you are one of the few who have access to cable, but for the rest…

    • You are aware there is a difference between cable and ADSL, right? And cable is only available in limited areas?

  • OP please change the description. This deal is not only for ADSL.

The same plan available on cable with 30mbps speed

Not really a bargain since this offer's been provided throughout the first half of 2013; and plus there is no significant speed difference between TPG and Telstra; and plus customer service of Telstra has nothing good..

  • Not a bargain, the explorer bundle is $90 and if you apply the bundle discount you get $10 off so it is $80 which is always the price and not a special deal.

  • Any idea if they are running the friends & family offer again ?

    • Different deal now. Only $50 credit as far as I know.

  • Guys, I'm with Hellstra because I'm on a RIM :(

Is there any other option or am I doomed and have to pay $88 a month to them?

  • Primus Customer Service Department are rude as.. I had an issue of Billing being double billed in a month and they were trying to say I had a new service added.. I said why would I want two internet connections at the same House, He said he did not know as that was not for him to ask what I use the net for.. I pulled my hair out..
And Had to put it all in writing they said.. So be warned… They are looney…

    • Maybe they signed you up for a business plain with a bonded service.

  • Apparently you can upgrade the speed from 30Mbps to 100Mbps, but with some difficulty
    http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Home-Broadband/BigPond…

I'd be happy paying this much to access up to 30Mbps speed. I just don't know if I want to go through the headache of the installation process. I'm not even sure if I have access to Cable as I'm on a subdivided block.

    • OK so there's no way to get Cable for me. Telstra don't do installs anymore due to the NBN rollout.

      • It's the same across the board, all the providers are sitting on their hands waiting for the NBN rollout, it's all very frustrating.

We're moving next year and the first the requirement of the new house will be fibre, no fibre no house and she'll just have to deal with it.
