Dell XPS 14 - i7-3537U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GT630 - $1679

140

Dell have 40% off their what was an expensive machine.
Speced pretty well for the price though, top end i7, heaps of fast ram and a dedicated graphics card.
Oh yeah: a freaking 512GB SSD. That alone would be ~$400

  • I think the market for laptops over $1500 is getting smaller by day.

This is 2013 I just dont think that anyone wants to spend big bucks on a laptop anymore knowing that they will have to buy a new one in 2-3 years time.

      go tell apple

    • +1

tell that to people who buy macbook pros, alienware, gaming laptops and the razer blade lol

      • I actually think 17in and above alienware is well worth the money. dual heatsinks and each comes with 3 heatpipes. they don't even get close to hot like other gaming laptops.

        • +7

do they still come with a disclaimer … heavy item >4kg requires 2 person to lift?

        • +1

          Do you even lift?

        • tell that all to my mate who has his card die twice in those suckers….but yeah they are cool running whilst they actually work :P

    • I agree that the market is getting smaller, but on the other hand, there will always be the person that wants the top specced everything. That is the market that Sony and to some degree IBM/Lenovo relied on. For as close as Intel gets to Nvidia with their integrated graphics, they won't get to the highend.

Nice first post Tom and like pana I can't help thinking "Dell have 40% off their what was and still is an expensive machine."

  • I get a bit annoyed at custom laptop deal like alienware and so on when sager, metabox and clevo (all the same really) are on offer and usually cheaper

    • The thing that the Dell and other first party ODMs have over the rebranded ones is the build quality and materials: the metal Dell makes their machines out of is really nice, the matte black around the keyboard is nice. I'm not sure that is the case with the brands you mentioned. If you are going to use a computer all day or for a large part of it, it makes sense to get something a bit nicer.

Ha, sure if you don't mind a massive price difference just so your laptop looks more glossy.

Clevos demolish alienware in price and quality

why oh why no full HD and no touchscreen either :(
Even 13.3" laptops have FHD these days.
I voted + by the way, massive savings on the price.

The XPS15 also on sale. Full HD display, same 512GB SSD, $1800
    Also comes with a GFX card - NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
This GFX card has 2GB memory compared to the XPS 14's card which is NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 630M with 1GB GDDR5 VRAM

    Still no touchscreen.
Hell, even 12" laptops have Full HD screen

    • Even worse, is that it's not IPS and has glossy finish :(

      • i like glossy :) but my new one is matte :(

Regardless of the rest of the specs, for a $1K+ laptop, anything less than 1080p is unacceptable.

There's currently a refurb of this model in the Dell outlet (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…) for $1216

  • am i missing something? I am just getting to understand computers and there parts more but this doesnt sound like near a good deal for me? I mean Dell is not good quality from my perspective and this deal seems to kick its ass provided u buy additional ssd? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106669#comment-1455298

    • A 512GB ssd is quite costly, around $400 and you also need to buy an OS.

The XPS is part of dell's more premium line, but yes that Horize laptop is a very good deal especially if you want to game on a laptop.

  • OK I have a previous version XPS 17 with a traditional hard drive,
and overall they are just about normal as the other laptops, nothing special. maybe better than your lenovo or acer but not by that much.

I wouldn't buy an XPS again we had too many problems with the screen on this one.
