best phone on the market … for my purposes :)

    • +2

It was between this and HTC One for me… HTC One won out :) $ wise this is great!

  • how's the touch screen compared to iphone?

    • +26

      bigger

      • +3

        like all android phones XD

  • +2

Great price. Grey import has been in this price point for a while but this is Australian stock with tax invoice.

    • You can claim overseas items back on tax - I just did today actually.

  • Tempting….
But I need more camera gear and I got Lifeproof case for my iphone for the time being…
    Temptation… temptation everywhere

  • +3

I was really excited for this phone till I saw it in the shop :(

    • -4

      Agreed, worst website design ever.

      • I thought he was talking about till he physically saw it in store… care to elaborate cloud226?

        • -1

Yes, I meant when I physically saw it, it's too square and thick which doesn't really show on the picture. But MSY website is notoriously bad as well ;)

        • +12

Thick? its 7.9mm, which is pretty damn thin in comparison to every other phone out there.

        • I guess the squareness makes it visually and felt thicker than S4

        • +6

I own one and I square it's great.

        • +1

Thick? What are you talking about? It's the second thinnest phone ever made!

      • The design is just fine, I think it is the colour scheme that makes it look odd.

  • awesome but can't spend money atm. Will certainly be checking out MSY and Vaya for when I have cash for a new phone.

  • +2

Oh C'mon, why can't someone make it $500 already?!

    • They did.

      …everywhere except Australia.

HTC OneX was sufficient for me to never buy a HTC again …
Motorolla razors were pretty cool (before i drowned it) …
3GS iPhone & the inbuilt life span became apparant as it slowly suicided …

Sony is everything i miss about the old Nokia build quality & while it may not have the fastest specs, it's not crashing repeatedly, is built to last, looks pretty, feels good & is waterproof for good measure!!

    • +3

:) i also said i would never buy a HTC product this was even before the HTC OneX … i now own a HTC One and it is the best phone i've owned :) (i've had, nearly every iteration of windows phones you can think of as well as Android and an Iphone 4) .. so for me its a big call to rate it the best.

  • +1

good deal but i'd prefer the nokia lumia 920 from kogan!

  • I dropped this phone in the pool as soon as I got it :(

    • Did it work? There's loads of photos of it sitting in a takeaway box full of water and being just fine…

      • The main reason i chose the HTC one over this is a few issues online about the battery drain and a few reviewers did test the waterproofness (its a word!) of it and it kinda didnt go too well.. hehe i'd love to know if it survived as well!

  • +2

I want a Sony phone so bad but they have the worst screens humanly possible, I actually once got a Xperia S when it was new but I just couldn't stand the awful viewing angles and sold it 2 weeks later. I'm a huge Sony fan and want to walk around with as many Sony products as possible but how the hell is it possible for the company that makes Bravia TV's to have the worse screen's on phones, they are known for bad screens.

The camera is also another story, worst camera's on phones go to Sony to. Wish they would fix everything already.

    • +1

The viewing angle is fixed with the new firmware update. It's now the best of any phone on the market.

  • -1

I wish this thing wasn't so square- it feels HUGE even compared to the Galaxy S4. Biggest flaw in this phone imo, otherwise I'd grab it.

  • +1

They also have the Xperia SP for $349. Good value if you can't afford the Z. :)

  • Has anyone tried to price match this?

    • +1

why would you go elsewhere to get it priced matched when you can simply go to msy where they already have it for this price? it confuses me to as why people always go and give there business to the businesses that charge more unless a customer finds it cheaper and asks for it to be matched.

How about you just give your business to the companies that do their best to have low prices all the time and not just when they feel like it

      just my opinion..

  • +3

Easily the best phone on the market at the moment in my opinion. I have had HTC One, Samsung S3 4G and Galaxy 4 in recent months and this blows them away. Yes it is squarer and took about 1 day to get used to it compared to rounder Galaxy models but the build quality is far superior to Samsung and it has now been updated to Android 4.2.2. Used it as an underwater camera in a pool while on holiday and was amazed by quality of video. Can't rate it highly enough, but like everything it might not be for everyone.

    • how is it compared to htc one?

      • it's a personal preference. just try it out yourself.

    • its a great phone but until you've used a windows phone you cannot make that statement imo :)

(lumia 920 or lumia 1020 - out soon)

      • 2 words: app compatibility.

        • Name the apps you need on a daily basis which you can't find on WP marketplace (including alternatives to the apps).

        • +3

I've used a windows phone and am inclined to say all other phones are better. I find the interface annoying to use and after a while, boring. After 5mins there is simply nothing to do on them. Its hard to describe, but even with apps installed I never wanted to pull it out and use them. If you want a phone to be just a phone, then yes Windows Phones are awesome. I never thought I would say this, but even an iPhone is better imho.

        • You find the interface boring? What exactly are you hoping to do with the interface? Chat to it? The whole point of the Windows Live Tile experience is that you are able to glance at your phone, get the important information you need and get on with your life! With one glance of my phone (without opening ANY applications), I see:

*Phone plan usage ($ left for data and calls)
          *Latest weather
          *Calendar events
          *Missed calls/texts
*Latest Box Office movie (in the form of a Live Tile)
*Latest Box Office trailer released (Nokia Trailers Live Tile)
          *Latest Windows Insider wallpaper
*Phone battery charge remaining in the form of an updating Live Tile
*Any application updates available from the Marketplace

No offense intended mate but it sounds like you're using your phone as if it were a PC or a tablet.

          Its… a phone.

        • Instagram is a pretty important one to me for my business seeing as I find and interact with customers on there.

        • Seek and you shall find my friend :)

          http://wmpoweruser.com/instance-windows-phone-instagram-app-…

over 300 reviews and its rated at 4.5/5 stars

        • I know about that interface. Why would I pay for a phone which is going to make me pay for an app interface for an App which is free to even the heavily ripped-off Apple customers?

The fact that it's third party and therefore will be slow with updates when Instagram is enough to sway me away, but making money from something which the provider of makes free is disgusting.

          Nice try though.

          1. There's a free version of the app. How are you getting ripped off?
          2. The full app is 99c and arguably better than official Instagram apps on other platforms, are we really having this discussion? That would make the full price of the phone for you $RRP + 99 cents (you could just get the free app and not pay 99 cents)
          3. Updates for the app have been approx 3 every week for the last 2 months if you read the comments section ( I read it for you ).
          4. Its one of the highest rated apps on the Marketplace, how can it possibly be a bad app?

          Sigh.

        • @grapedrink, I totally agree. It is a phone OS that does just that, be a (smart) phone. And it does that well (like I said). But as a technical device that allows customization and advanced options, it sucks hard. This is what I meant by boring (I should have explained better), ie I personally was bored by its limited options. I don't like the Tile interface but it makes a logical combination of icons & widgets, whilst removing the requirement to actually launch apps. I had other gripes with WP8 as well mostly illogical menus & actions that take way too many steps (I have the same gripes with W8), but those are things to overcome with time.

It is all opinion anyway, I can understand why WP is liked by some, but it's not for me.

PS, I use my phone as an; MP3 player, g+ & managing Steam downloads.

PPS, Steam app is not available on Windows Phones?

        • +2
          1. The free version allows you to upload one whole photo (wow!)

          2. It's not the monetary amount, it's the principal of making money off of others success. Imagine me charging for an app I design that takes you to facebook…

          3. They don't guarantee any updates.

          4. Highest rated…on the Windows marketplace, dolt. Want to know what's rated even higher by millions more people? The free version on Android and iOS.

So basically, you're a Windows fanboy who has invested in the product and are trying to delude yourself into believing that the restricted access you so enjoy is better.

          Bully for you.

        • +1

"you're using your phone as if it were a PC or a tablet."

Which is exactly how I use it. - Its a smartphone. I have the world in my pocket. I have a note 2 - I torrent, HDMI output movies, music, access RDPs. Its a smart phone :)

Sadly in Windows Phone with no unified notification centre- I'd be lucky to know I have a missed call without specifically checking the phone app.

      • I had the HTC Mozart Windows Phone the day it came out (big mistake).. and earlier this year I thought I would use an HTC 8X just to see if they had made WP it any better. Both were average and I don't count the Windows Phone OS as a major player hence I din't list it.

  • Got mine secondhand in perfect condition for $385 and I and absolutely love it!

    • +1

Sold mine last week for $400. Can't stand on screen button otherwise its a great phone.

      • Anybody else want to sell theirs? :D

      • +1

You know you can hide them right and use things like Pie launcher.

  • +1

If I had the money, this would have been my first port of call, instead I just settled for the Experia T - on it's way to me from the mystical land of Kogan…

  • Sold mine for $425, using better phone now ZR

    • Hi… I'm considering either the Z or ZR for about the same price. The Z seems to be marketed as the flagship product… in which way do you find the ZR better?

  • If only the camera feature would perform half as well as the S3 :(
    http://connect.dpreview.com/post/6781282610/sony-xperia-z-ca…
Not really forgivable for a flagship phone (iphone5 leaves it for dead too which is really irritating)

Hmm, battery life also terrible from tests I'm reading.

I know these faults won't bother everyone, just these seem to be the major ones. If you just want a 1080 screen and fast phone this is a very good buy. In fact this is one of the few screens I can read clearly without my glasses.

  • WTF, price went up to $549?? usually phone price go down, not up!
