LOL at the DSE Specs for this phone.

    • +2

I'm imagining Grumpy Cat reading out that spec list…

    • lol too. Are they trying to scare the potential customers off during the promotion period?

    • Battery Included No

How much is the battery ?

    • LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • +1

Not sure if the phone is unlocked..

    • Prepaid is normally locked but you can unlock most phones for a small fee.

  • +1

is the RAM 512mb or 1 GB ??

    • 1gb according to gsmarena

  • From what i understand about the network frequencies am i correct in thinking this phone would be ok for OPTUS.

    • Yes.

      • +1

        thankyou

  • If your going to stick with Vodafone Coles has 20% voda prepaid recharges at the moment.

  • +1

It uses the Snapdragon MSM 8930 that is used in the Samsung Galaxy Express so it might have the Adreno 305 gpu. Thanks op!! found my mum her next phone, now to retire her Acer liquid phone :p

    • Lol, hows that for coincidence. Exactly the same situation, buying one for mum to replace her $129 Acer liquid phone.

  • It is and excellent phone, highly recommended.
I got it 3 months ago from DS for AU$ 199, and now seeing this I'm so frustrated ….
Anyway, you won't regret it. The phone comes locked but you should unlock it easily from Ebay, around $5 code.

    • Thanks for that was about to ask how did you unlock it.

Edit: Contacted Bagman and he can unlock it for $5.49

      • Is there a limit to how many can be unlocked to one buyer?

        • Not sure. I'm assuming he charges per phone. Just ask him he replied in 1 minute.

    • Thanks!

    • Thanks!

    • Don't know why, but thanks!

  • Is this one a pretty good starter smartphone? I'm looking for one for my grandma - basically, she wants a reliable phone that holds a decent charge with a touch screen and a camera.

    • for a grandma i would go iOS or WP8. I found Android to be more complicated.

      • Grandma needs a bigger screen

        • +9

Grandma needs something that can handle GTA a bit better

        • Grandma needs something in her pocket that's six inches long and has a balding head… a $100 note.

      • Android plus senior launcher is about the best option there is for older people.

  • +1

Lol, I'm sitting here right now trying to upgrade my slow arse Galaxy 5 from stock to Gingerbread 2.3.7 (for something to do, and to try getting better battery life, performance, etc) and having all sorts of issues with Odin. Bugger that now though, I'll just buy one of these instead :)

    • I'll have your Galaxy 5!!! I'll even trade you my huawei G510-200!

  • i'm getting at $5 small package delivery charge showing up in the "cart" page after entering your postcode even tho it states free shipping for this item.
    Any way of avoiding this?

    • I'm not seeing a free delivery on this one…

EDIT: Hmm.. Yet it shows as "Free Delivery on this item" in the cart. Go figure!

      • Do you get the $5 charge after you enter your postcode?

    • +3

Just open it again and don't enter postcode. In checkout it will be free. I just ordered and it came up free.

      • Thanks for the tip

  • Good deal , just bought a couple

    • You're very brave for admitting to buying more than one.

      • +2

One for me and one for misses, we both have lower spec phones atm.

    • Reselling on ebay? You can profit $100 each since they seem to be selling for $199 + delivery.

  • had a feeling this phone's price would be dropping down quickily. this is THE cheapest 4G phone at the moment besides Telstra Frontier. I've been looking at this phone before I bought my LG optimus G.

  • Great deal, Bought one.thanks OP.. next to find how to unlock this now

  • Judging by the network bands, this would work ok on Telstra Next G and 4G networks as well, assuming the phone was unlocked?

  • I'm wondering whether this is actually unlocked because when I called DSE I queried them as to whether it was locked - they stated their internal description does not state the word Vodaphone anywhere. Brilliant deal regardless.

    • Definitely locked. I tried to unlock it a few months back.

      • Was the unlocking successful? Any issues?

  • +1

    Got one! Thank you!

    From Whirlpool

    For
    - Good battery life
    - Adequate performance for all but the most demanding tasks
    - 4G LTE at a low price
    - Fairly decent design for a prepaid phone

    Against
    - Build quality of the plastic chassis isn't the best
    - Limited internal storage
    - Just one color available (via Vodafone)
    - Future software update is a huge question mark based on Huawei's track record

  • -5

Beware, this is locked to Vodafone and you end up paying $50~75 more to use this phone with a sim card from other carriers.

    • How do you know? where does it say it is locked with Vodafone?

      • Because It's Vodafone branded and I tried to unlock it before.

    • +1

Well people have said above its $5.39 to unlock this phone

    • You are clearly new around here. Bagman has been mentioned a lot as per above comments. He's a well known unlocker for zte, lg, Huawei etc etc on OzB for around $5 each.

Not even close to your inflated %50-$75 mark.

        • U seriously have no idea how unlocking system works. Warranty and unlocking are not related together.

  • Are there any custom roms available for this phone?

    • +1

Not atm, but it is being worked on I think

      • Thanks is there development of the G526 on one of the forums?

  • Purchased two. Didnt have time to think. How does this compare to HTC Velocity? Me and missus have them but the battery life is appalling. We purchased it for $200 each earlier this year (Feb).

Will this work with Optus 3g (after unlocking)? Will it be any better than HTC Velocity.

      Same screen size(4.5 inches)
      1620 mAh battery(HTC) vs 1950 mAh battery(Huawei)

But again, there are other factors contribute to the battery life. Brightness of the screen, background apps and others.

      HSDPA 900 / 2100 - G526-L11
      HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100 - G526-L22
      HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - G526-L33

Should work with Optus 3g, but not entirely sure

Edit : it is G526-L22 model according to Vodafone, so it should work with Optus 3g and Optus 4g(only 1800mhz)

  • Is the battery removable?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Great deal, just bought one. Thanks op!

  • Will this work with the 850 Mhz Telstra 3G Network? And is this the same size screen as an iPhone 5?

    • Yes, it will(but you need to unlock the phone first).

No, this one is bigger(4.5 inches vs 4 inches), bulkier and slightly heavier(about 40g more).

  • lets hope the Chinese didn't skip on QC… the last time I bought a cheap Sony Ericsson from DSE, had terrible time with warranty claims. Had to wait for 6 weeks to get the phone repaired twice!

    • Vodaphone website states 2yrs warranty for prepaid phones… not sure unlocking would void such thing tho.

  • What charge do Vodaphone impose to unlock this phone? I could not see it on their web site

  • Also if I unlock this , will I be able to install the Telsra Foxtel Mobile App on it?

You can always download the app from Google Play store.

    • The Foxtel app that came on my Huawei Y201 works fine when I have a T SIM in it but goes black when I run it on another network.
No sign of the app on Google Play, so it looks like it is only a part of the T bloatware that comes on the phone.

  • Anyone know of any mods out there to resize the internal space on this? It's the first thing I tend to do with these cheapie handsets but I can't see any custom recovery/ROMS/resizing for the G526 from a quick Google.

I've bought one for the wife anyway as her phone just died but it would be nice to get it resized before handing it over and being tech support for her 'no free space' issues when she has her apps update on it for the rest of my life…

    • +2

you have some great hopes for this to last rest of your life :D

      • +1

Well if I get these requests every couple of days for the next 6 months the frustration alone could send me to an early grave so the 'rest of my life' may not be as long as you'd imagine!!

    • The internal space is only 4gb anyway and after installing OS, the actual internal space will be 1~2GB.
I would rather buy $10 16gb micro sd card from MSY and insert it in the mobile phone. The phone supports upto 32gb micro sd card and the sd cards are quite cheap in now days. It even costs less than a lunch.

      • +1

In my experience these handsets tend to split the internal space though so you only get 1GB for 'apps' and the remaining couple of GB for 'data', say (OS also taken into account, obv). I normally expand the apps partition at the expense of data as you can easily whack an SD card in to give more space for music, photos etc. as you rightly say but the apps partition tends to be prohibitively small.

It's rare in my experience (which isn't inrcedibly extensive…) you get something at this price point where the internal space is all available for apps like you get on a Nexus phone.

  • For those who don't know… prepaid handsets from vodafone can be unlocked after 6 months or so use, just tried the sony ericcison which was previously locked and got a free unlock code via vodafone's website.

    • The catch is you will have to actually use a vodafone simcard

  • +3

Thanks got one! Time to replace that 3 yr old HTC Desire HD

    • +1

      One major bargainer, I see.

    • Haha the HD still does most of the stuff the new phones do! Just a lot slower :)

    • im upgrading to this from the HTC Desire hd as well

    • didn't realise there were so many desire HD users :D

    • +1

Did you guys get your DHDs on that RACV 12 month Vodafail deal, because I sure did

  • -1

Out of stock online as of 7.50pm.

    • +1

Nope still showing In Stock for me… I wonder if their ordering system is screwed!

    • +1

      still going dude

    • I stand corrected - it's now back in stock.. Perhaps a website error, or they relinquished existing stock and now have more. Anyone hesitating to buy shouldn't waste time thinking.

  • +3

Never had any issues getting Voda to unlock handsets. I use NZ SIMs in NZ and AT&T SIMs in USA and nobody in a Vodafone store has ever been anything but helpful when I have asked them to unlock a phone.
Have used Bagman for a Telstra locked handset, highly recommended.
Have also used Telstra to unlock a handset for $27.50 and charged that back against the $30 credit on a prepaid. Worked brilliantly, but I had owned the handset for more than 6 months. Not much help in this case, but worth keeping in mind.
Locking handsets to one network sucks and shows no regard for the customer. Imagine if you bought a new car and could only put one brand of fuel in it for 2 years! People would be marching in the streets…

    • If they subsidised a brand new car, I'd be more than happy buy fuel from a single provider. None of the prepaid phones are "retail prices".

It's a great phone if you like Chinese intelligence agencies (aka Ministry of State Security of the PRC) listening and seeing everything you do. Huawei is also involved in fraud and bribery according to US House Intelligence Committee.

In a report to be released Monday, the committee recommends that the U.S. block acquisitions or mergers involving the two companies (Huawei and ZTE) through the Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S. It also recommends that the U.S. government avoid using equipment from the firms, and that U.S. companies seek alternative vendors for telecommunications equipment. Committee officials plan to refer their findings about Huawei to the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, the report says.

    • +7

Will make sure Im wearing my tinfoil hat while using the phone, thats should stop them

    • Agree but one could say the same about Google albeit not as extreme as above.

    • They're mainly concerned about telco network equipment, not the phones themselves.
And so they should be IMO.

Down with the Chinese Communist Party!
