  • Just asking to clarify - but will Apple pricematch if you go instore/over the phone, with DSE?

I'm particularly looking at the new Macbook Pro

    • +2

i've never paid full price in apple store. they are always pretty happy to match 10% off any time i've been in.

      • +1

yes they do,i did with my 2012 model :)

      • Can you still get 10% off from Apple store with upgraded spec? For example, a Mac Book Air with 8GB. The retail stores (DSE, JB, TGG etc) seem to sell only standard spec machines.

        • Yeah that's what I'm really interested in, getting Apple to match a 10% off for a BTO iMac. I would rather buy from Apple as I really REALLY hate dead pixels and I know if I buy directly from them I can return no questions asked. I have been burnt with dead pixels before on my current iMac which Apple had to exchange TWICE to get one with no dead pixels.

        • usually no, I tried once but it was unsuccessful try, they told me only PM with the standers models. but you will not loss anything if you try.

    • I was refused a price match at Apple Chatswood on Sunday against The Good Guys 10% off sale on the basis that TGG didn't have local stock and delivery would take a few days so was not the same deal. Walked up a couple of levels to JB Hi Fi who price matched 10% off with stock on hand.

  • +1

Do they have the latest model?

    Edit:
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/apple-computers/apple-macbook-pr…
This seems to be the latest one

    • +12

Ive had enough of everyone always criticising for buying apple. I like apple so i will buy apple, if you don't like apple, don't buy apple. Simple as that, so just leave us alone

    • +2

We all know that Apple sells at the premium price for their products due to the quality builds. Not many people like the hassle to build their own PC and clean up dust every now and then.

I personally own a PC with 27 inch 2560x1440 resolution with equivalent iMac panel from Korea and it is a hassle to build and clean my own PC.

The money and time I used to maintain my PC far exceeds of the amount of a Mac.

      • @Letrico
Which monitor did you get? Catleap/Yamasaki?

      • +1

        I didn't realise Apples don't get dirty…

    • +5

For someone who hates Apple, you sure have commented on a lot of Apple deals recently.

    • -1

its kind of overprice but its really worth it great products great services what do you want more ? or give me a company has great products and great service?
also they never let me down. sometimes they do things they dont have to do
they upgraded my iphone 4 to iphone 5 and my ipad 2 to ipad 4 for FREE also the replaced my broken screen iphone for FREE plus got some store credit if they miss things up! which other company happy to do that?

      • +3

Upgraded both iphone, ipad and free screen repair? apple must really like you, I bet you're ridiculously good looking or something. I know apple doesn't upgrade everyone's device, let alone 2 devices and screen.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I was waiting for good deals for an imac 27 too

    • I want the iMac 21; but they only carry the base, right?

      • +8

You could, but what price would a 27 inch monitor at this resolution cost you? Given the quality of the screens, the iMacs are surprisingly good value.

As with all things Apple, also depends how much you values their OS, warranty, build quality etc.

        Each to their own :)

        • Dell IPS 27" monitors are only $333 at PCCG.

        • +4

That's not the Ultrasharp and only has 1920x1080.
The Ultrasharp is $660, which is an amazing price. I got the older version a few years ago for this price (down about $400 from $1000 thanks to OzBargain) and it is super sweet.

        • +4

I'm not an apple hater by any means but I have severe reservations about buying an imac nowadays. i bought my 27" imac when it just came out along with an i7 (lynnfield) processor. It is now 4 years old and still works great but now that I want to give it a little speed boost I am found wanting for options.

Problems that I have with apple and the imac.

Mavericks is as buggy as hell. I know it's free but if MS released something like this there would be an inquiry. It really is a beta.

Warranty? What warranty. It's basically the same as any other place unless you buy applecare

also my machine also has a faulty model of hard-drive. http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/. yay so i get a free replacement drive which is worth about $30. All i need to do is take the whole machine over there. Reinstall everything. keep backup of all my settings. No i didn't take up the offer even though my machine was eligible. Luckily it is still working fine.

When the hard drive dies like they all eventually do i'll at least be able to replace it with an ssd… hang on. I can't because this must be the first desktop in history where it isn't a user replaceable part. (yes I'm aware you can take apart the whole machine with some patience and when it dies i'll attempt it but not before then). I only expect two parts to be user replaceable. HDD and memory. is that too much to ask? If i can't successfully replace the drive then the whole machine is a 5 kg doorstop which is ridiculous because the screen is still great and possible most of the computer is still working except one part. Maybe i can use it as a monitor for a laptop with displayport in target mode.

Build quality for a desktop is very overrated unless it's to the point where things break.

My advice is to stay away from all in ones. They are flawed conceptually. They look pretty but given that you don't need portability in a desktop and this is from a user who has been lucky and used it for 4 years. They basically use notebook components to make it thinner but functionally there is no need.

I think you could make a case that their notebooks are pretty good value . I personally don't think the imacs though are.

        • If you want to compare like with like, at least do it properly:

          www.tftcentral.co.uk/search.php?query=27"WS+LG.Display+H-IPS…

        • With an inbuilt scaler that introduces input lag and an aggressive AG coating + polarizer filters that makes colours look shimmery instead of solid.

The Yamakazi/Catleap 27" that use the LG panel are a much, much better buy as they don't have those two bad problems that the Dell 27" has.

        • That's because the monitor you are referring to has only 1920x1080 resolution. 27" iMac has 2560x1440.

        • I think all-in-ones are a bit of an issue when it comes time to upgrading.

WRT hard drive replacement.. you can take it to an apple store and they will backup and restore for you using whatever the fastest disk they have is firewire/thunderbolt etc.

Or you can do it yourself and it's not that hard with Apple kit. The builtin timemachine backup does a great job of restoring your system onto a new drive once the O/S is on there. In the case of my mac mini I changed drives and the thing went out over wifi and downloaded the O/S from Apple HQ. I didn't even have to buy media, get a license key etc etc as required for windows. Oh, and when it booted the first time it prompted me - do I have a timemachine backup that I want to restore. This worked flawlessly.

I don't have enough hours left in my life to explain how different this experience is to recovering a windows machine onto a new hard drive. In case you think I'm a win hater. Linux recovery whilst a technical is very doable. Win just isn't. Open file locks, the registry and poor included backup tools conspire to make the nuke and pave method the way to go (unless you've bought 3rd party tools that work).

        • Windows (or any other O/S) isn't difficult or time consuming to upgrade the Hard Disk - just take an image of the old drive and run it back on the new drive !!!

As an example, last week a 65GB windows setup took me about 10 minutes to create the image and 7 minutes to run it back onto the new drive…

      • +1

they same applies to everything in life! Because there are better looking partners out there that doesn't mean that your partner has been ripped off…

      • Dare you to build one half as nice for double the price. Specs amount to a fraction of the user experience. Consider fan noise, aesthetics, longevity and service and these work out to be really good value.

        • +5

Is this a real challenge? Because here you go.

27" iMac is $1979. I'll build you something nice for the same price, don't even need anywhere near double.

          Case - Fractal Design Define R4 - $149
          MOBO - Gigabte Z77-HD3 - $149
          CPU - i7 4770K - $379
          RAM - 8GB Kingston ValueRAM - $89
          Graphics - Galaxy GTX760 - $279
          SSD - Samsung SSD 840 Evo 120GB - $109
          HDD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB - $99
          PSU - Corsair CX-600 - $95
          Cooler - Noctua NH-D14 - $89
          Monitor - ASUS PB278Q - $599

          Total - $2036

Fan noise, the Noctua NH-D14 is absolutely silent.

Aesthetics, Fractal Design Define R4 looks great.

Longevity, better specs will last you longer before needing an upgrade.

          Service, user-repairable, no service required.

Plus, better specs in every single way with true discrete graphics.

        • +3

you forgot to add the ios, mouse, keyboard, assembly costs and… the fact that you are comparing apples(no pun intended) to oranges :)

        • +1

Was just for a bit of fun, I wasn't the one saying that Apple was bad value…etc. in fact, I think for the market they are targeting, they're actually not that bad.

My point is, though, that things such as noise, aesthetics, longevity and service are not "Apple traits", Apple is just another PC manufacturer.

  • Does enyone know if we can have the 10%OFF online?Just checked their site, if you buy the imac online they also give you an apple tv for fee(online exclusive). if you search for imac you will see every model gives you two results, one with and one withoutthe apple tv and the price is the same ;)

    • -1

Yeah i can't see online where it's saying 10% off. It does say a bonus apple tv with an apple mac purchase. Possibly the 10% off sale hasn't started yet?. If it was it should be saying That's 10% off in the product page. Or maybe the 10% off deal is in store only.

      • +9

I thought you were not interested in rip-off Apple products :)

        • -2

          Each to their own.

        • That was a little uncalled for, just because someone isn't interested in product X doesn't mean they can't answer questions. The answer was reasonable from my perspective.

    • +1

Free Apple TV is the current promotion, 10% off starts Thursday 14/11/13

      • Well 2 days to wait then for those who want an imac. Maybe the topic should be saying it starts on 14th of November so people don't get confused thinking that the offer is on right now.

      • Thanks unity1, i missed the starting date :)

      • thnx :)

      • Yep and that deal ends on the 13th, so can't get 10% off and the apple tv.

  • How does this work with educational pricing?

    • Apple seems to stop at 10% off… deals can't be combined.

Dick smith 10% off == Apple educational discount == Apple "black Friday" sale discount (end of this month) => no big deal :-)

      • No, the educational discounts are less than 10%. The highest I saw them was around 7% on their LCD panel.

        • Using this prices seem to come down to around 9% less… close.

    • You cant double dip.

  • Has anyone ever had any luck in JB or Myer matching the 10% off and beating it? A retina MBP sure is tempting right now…

    • -1

Well no body would have yet because Dick Smiths 10% off sale doesn't start until thursday. Maybe on thursday you may be able to try price match.

    • JB or Myer will almost always give the 10% off, even if there's not a sale on. They will do it for built-to-order computers as well. I heard JB are getting a bit stricter but I've never had a problem, might just depend on which sales person you get.

Last time I bought a mac I was able to get 10% off a BTO from Myer, they had the "buy a $100 giftcard get a $10 giftcard" promo on at the same time, worked out to about 18% off.

      • Not 100% true, last time i remember asking JB(2 months ago) for a BTO they told me there is no discount on custom imacs not even when they have 10%off normal models

      • I did the same with my last Macbook when Myer were offering a free $50 card when you purchase a $500 voucher. Would be great if something similar comes up in the coming month.

    • I bought my 2012 iMac 27" with 15% discount in March this year when Dick Smith have 15% off apples, price matched by Myer. I couldnt get the 15% on the BTO iMac though

  • can you get woollies 5% staff discount on top of this 10%???

    • +1

Dick Smith is not owned by Woolworths anymore.

      • +1

but the wish gift card still usable,at least uo to this moment (because of the former system thing, they will soon totally seperated though, probably end of this year)

        • Oh damn! :(

You don't think they'll work out a deal like Coles Group & Myer did?

      • True, but the staff discount does still work at DSE for the time being. However, it would appear that they've explicitly excluded this offer from being combined with a Woolworths staff discount (I tried online, and other items work fine, but not the Apple computers)

  • +2

get the wish gift card with 5% off pkus 10%,yay :)

  • OP mentions this deal comes twice this month. More details? would it be for black friday?

    • nah, last time was the beginning of Nov and this is the second time. If you can risk, it's worth waiting for their 15% off but due to ownership is now not Woolworths anymore, I would better off get one now with 15% off (5% + 10%) instead of 20% which might or might not happen

      • it's worth waiting for their 15% off

They've had a 15% off sale? I can't find any mention of it on here…

        • they have, I bought my 2012 iMac 27" with 15% discount in March this year, price matched by Myer. I couldnt get the 15% on the BTO iMac though

  • -4

Junk. Obsolete in weeks and the iMac is completely non upgradeable unless you get the 27" model. Then when faster chips come out, guess what another $2K+ out the window. Unlike PC's where you can swap in mobo's and CPU's at will. Oh loooooooooooooooooook shinnnnnnnnnnnnnny fruiiiiiiiiiiiit.

    • +1

have you ever used an iMac 27"? if not, try playing with it, it is not built to be pc liked supercomputer BUT the screen resolution is a plus for doing heavy reading and multi windows, the look is so chic for a piece of deco in your house, there is no noise coming out of the machine like the fan does on all-in-one pc, the softwares are included (iWork 11, iMovie, etc.) means you don't need to purchase softwares like Microsoft Office, Sound Forge, Photoshop, Adobe Premier etc., worry-free warranty which means you just bring it to Apple store to have it fixed or changed without having your works interrupted (they provide shipping warranty services too, which is brilliant as they can lend you a similar machine straightaway while waiting for yours fixed).
So, just think about it as a mid-range pc which would cost around $400-$500 + screen which is cheapest at $430 (Kogan) + price for good customer services (I value it $200, which Harvey Norman called premium services for $299), $45 for the wireless keyboard (similar price to Logitech), $50 for the trackpad (for people like me don;t like using mouse) + the price for being a well-designed piece of working art ^_^ (I value it $200), preloaded softwares would easily save you few hundreds (unless you love pirating lol) => pretty much not a rip-off ;) and last but not least, I can guarantee you that you can resell your iMac after a period of using easily and still can get most of the money back, I doubt you can do much better with a PC ;)

      • -2

Chic? Its a tool. I can build a silent Windows box easily. I can fix it easily and if I want a new one I'll sell the old one off or toss it. If I wanted a decent screen I'd buy a 30" Ultrasharp which craps all over the iMac screen.

      • -1

Screen resolution is hardly something to scream home about. Plenty of 27" screens out there with the same resolution.

Chic look, each to their own, my PC looks great.

Free software, there are great open source alternatives, e.g. OpenOffice.Org, GIMP…etc.

Warranty, I can fix my own computer at home, no need to drive it around to places.

I completely disagree with you with the notion of preloaded software being worth hundreds. Open source software.

I completely understand that you might love Mac, but you can't really argue that Apple > PCs…etc.

    • +2

I have a late 2012 iMac 27", and it rocks. And I'm not an apple fanboi either. Been using PC's since 1993 (286, 386 etc). Have a Samsung Galaxy phone and an ASUS transformer tablet, but this iMac is the best computer I have ever bought. 32Gb RAM, Fusion HDD, incredible screen, and all in one - completely silent. Photoshop CS6 start up in 2.5 seconds from cold, 1.8 after previous use.

Was it more expensive than a similar specced PC? No doubt. But it's worth it.

  • MacBooks Pro are previous generation unfortunately…

    • no worries, just walk in store and strike a deal with newest model ;)

    • Wrong

  • new imacs have a ssd/ssd+hd option as well as the perfectly serviceable old HD as standard but i take your point on serviceability so i recommend ebay/applecare plan extentions but the new macbook pro's look pretty sweet and i love my macbookair!

I built my pc tower recently, paid about half what an AIR cost me but its what i now use daily (along with ipad), my tower does utorrent and is setup as a server and thats all its good for IMO. I HATE win8 and its caused me to try LINUX seriously but i still dualboot the tower with win7 licence i had spare but win8/8.1 NO WAY HOSEA

  • Will I be able to get a 27" 3.2 with a Fusion or SSD straight from DSE? I'd like to use my Wish cards.

    • yes but without discount as they strictly make the rule that 10% off is only for base models

    • Has anyone managed to get an imac with the SSD for a good price? DSE wont budge on the no discount for BTO which is a shame. Maybe they can pricematch somewhere else that will? Seems such a waste to not get the built in pcie SSD on this gen.

  • Apple will likely do a few discounts for their Black Friday Sale at the end of the month. They're not likely to be better than 10% though.

    • +1

do a price match now with The Good Guys, I got $40 extra off ^_^, the guy said the deal is on tomorrow then I said it would be more complicated if I refund tomorrow, more work for you and he agreed lol

      • Got an even better deal by buying the 5% off Wish gift cards…

  • -7

I don't bother with all these discount malarckies… I sit in my recliner > go to the Online Apple Store, buy the latest and greatest (bought an iPad mini yesterday), use it for the max. "Eligible return date" 14-19 days (it's supposed to be 14, but it can be 19). Then order another item > click the "Return" button on the previous > next day Apple call me to arrange a collection > put it back in the box > wait for the TNT guy to knock with the new or to collect the old.

    Simplez.

    What? Apple are rich.
Why do you think their stuff is expensive? Cos of freeloaders like me.

    • +1

      speechless…

    • You are worse than broden.

  • Dicksmith doesn't have the new models with haswell?

    • They have the latest MBPr's - ME294X/A

      • +1

That's the only one they have. None with the 128GB or 256GB SSD.

        • Ah ok - my bad - thats the one I'm going for - ordering on Monday :)

        • They do have 256GB - ME293X/A.

  • +1

What do you think are the chances of a 15% sale anywhere before Christmas?

  • Not really special, they do this every second weekend now. I dont see how it is special. Just wait a week and its on again.

    • +1

It is – because of this. Saved an extra 5% on my iMac 27”.

  • Tried ordering 4 times now - order gets cancelled each time! Have tried 3 different cards (from 3 different banks!) but all they can tell me over the phone is my payment was declined and to speak with bank!
