    I got this charger.

Looks very nice and build quality seems pretty good. I can charge a nexus 4 from 0-100% about 3 times with this.

        • +23

… and the negs would be for?

          Feel the love… :)

        • +3

the battery calibrates to the phone when you run it out so the phone can give a more accurate estemate of the juice left. it is not bad for anything, and it doesnt get hotter when its low battery, when the phone is hot is when the battery starts to get drained, which is probably why you found your battery to be crummy while the phone was overheating,

        • +12

I think because it was off topic and you come accross as a know-it-all, instead of being someone genuinely wanting to help. Your followup post kind of confirms it.

          If you had have written:

"Cheers for the info, nice to know how much charge the battery can give. btw, you might not be aware but running your battery to 0% will hurt its lifetime, heres a couple of things you might be interested in related to battery life "insert useful URL here"."

probably would have been better received.

Also, nothing screams "NEG THE SHIT OUT OF ME" more than telling people that they are wrong in negging you.

        • +2

seems to ozb's bad habit of jumping on the bad wagon when someone has a couple of neg's. I don't think Tas' comments come off as arrogant or a know it all, he's trying to let the OP know that something may be detrimental for his phone - is that not helpful? i don't know all too much about batteries, everyone says different things - but i was under the impression that you should completely drain Li Po batts, but rather are designed for quick shorter timed charges.

and to be fair, when you are getting negs for no reason (or no reply rather) and ask politely

… and the negs would be for?

          is quite reasonable imo.

        • +8

Hey Tas, tis but a micro moment in time.
We have all copped a neg off from time to time.
I think its best to answer once, maybe twice and then just let it go. If your point isn't working or a people are negging everything you say, it might be just to wind you up, no biggie (nothing really deeply counts for me on the net… it's just 'the net')
          Which is all a long-winded way of saying;

"Keep thy give-a-shit factor low" :)

        • +3

I don't think you have any idea how your comments read. They don't come off as fun, and this one came off as an attempt to show your knowledge on a matter as opposed to a sincere attempt at helping someone.

        • What is the best way to prolong battery life ? I thought that battery life is limited/depends on the number of charging cycles. So the less number of times you charge the battery the longer it's service life will be. This means you need to use it as much as you could before recharging it. Is this a myth ? Do we now have to put it in the charger even before it reaches half capacity ?

        • +2

I don't know whether this is fact, but I was told the number of cycles isn't the number of times you charge, but the equivalent pro rata. eg 5 x 20% charges = 1 cycle.

I work with other lithium batteries and believe that it's true that it's better to top up rather than to drain and recharge.

        • +2

You can lead them to water Tas, but you can't make them drink. Ignore the -sheep, thanks for the info.

        • I believe one way to prolong battery life is charge them slower as well which is something you can set in the phone with certain kernels at least for Android. Haven't actually done it myself but I'm running a kernel with these options.

      • +2

Interesting collection of negative votes you got there.

In a later post you describe an experiment that could be done to confirm your assertions. That is a good start. But did you actually run that experiment yourself? Did you run it repeatedly? And what were the numeric results, what temperatures did you get? Did you control for air temperature?

Even better would be if you can give us a link to a reputable source that has made similar observations under lab conditions. Best would be a reference to a study published in a peer reviewed scientific journal that confirms your claims.

The problem is: your claims are counter intuitive.

One established fact is: If the voltage is lower and the current the same then the wattage dissipated by a CPU will be lower by definition. It will run cooler, not hotter. This is the reason Ultrabooks use low voltage versions of CPUs. As such your claim that 'processor runs much hotter doing a given task when battery voltage is low' is clearly false.

It is still possible that the phone as a whole runs hotter if lower battery means there are other things that use more power (i.e. circuits converting voltages or the battery itself). But that's not what you wrote…

        • +2

This'll be just a single response that touches on various things above.
A general thanks to the non-ovine-ozbargainers who stood with their non-woolly backs against the tide. Ta.
Commenting on certain OzB threads can sometimes feel like being on a 'not so merry' merry-go-round.
To 'minijumbuk' who was amongst those who plus voted somewhere above - a grovelling apology for the 'non-ovine-ozbargainer' reference. Forgive me.

Found this: www.ozbargain.com.au/node/110081 I chimed in around the middle. As regards general charge/retention characteristics of lithium batteries it covers a bit of ground. Apologies for the 'know-it-all' tone, if that's how it comes across. Matter-of-fact / blunt delivery + passion = fine line sometimes crossed.

To Team Teri. Specific experiment constructed not conducted. Outcome would illustrate for others my practical experience everyday - where device temperature gets real. In my first comment in this thread, note the contrast between my use of the words 'bad' and 'very bad'. All referenced to the cheek-by-jowl nature of battery and phone guts, then referenced to the non-removable nature of a Nexus battery and most people's hopes - presumed - of maintaining its life for as long possible.

Did that make any sense, as put? Probably not.

          Pointy-end experience:
Rare is the day that I don't have at least one MHL enabled device - usually one of two Samsung Note models - connected to a spare monitor.
Current standard MHL protocol only allows for 500mA charging, so phone battery in fact drains slowly through the course of the day. When battery voltage is low (and all other factors aside - only when low) , current demands for a given task mean constantly having to go in and check battery widget PLUS cracking open phone case to keep heat level down. Toasty indeed.

I might leave it at that. I'm done, pretty much.

I bought it a few hours ago after I applied the code:

Romoss 10400mAh Portable Charger, Emergency Power, External Backup Battery for Apple iPad 2, iPhone 5/ iPhone 4s,Samsung Galaxy S3 S S2 S II
SKU:0039459-001,  Ships from China warehouse. Most customers receive in 2-3 weeks.
    Sold by Romoss Technology Co.,Ltd
    1 $29.99

    Subtotal $29.99
    Coupon(MLCS10EN): -$7.00
    Shipping (Hong Kong Post): $0.00
    Tax: $0.00
    Total: $22.99

    Very happy :)

    • +3

      Total: $22.99

      That's in $US.

      From amount $26.40 AUD
      To amount $22.99 USD
      Exchange rate: 1 AUD = 0.870968 USD

      • Why're you using that as the exchange rate? Currently on the MasterCard website $1AU is listed as $0.900800US.

So $22.99 = $25.52. My Bankwest Zero Platinum follows the MasterCard rate pretty much exactly, so I'd assume most cards that don't charge an international transaction fee will too.

        • Why're you using that as the exchange rate?

I didn't, that is what came back from Paypal

        • +4

Any real OzBargainer doesn't use PayPal's exchange rates ;-)

        • +12

You can set paypal to let your credit card take care of currency conversion.

Thanks… I was getting worried I wasn't going to learn something new today. :)

        • do you know where in paypal you need to go to set this up?…. I can't seem to locate it.

        • I am relative new on Paypal. Can you tell me how to set my Paypal account to do this please?

        • where's that setting may i ask?

        • +1

Edit - Scratch what I wrote here. What Hamza23 wrote below is correct.

          ===

I haven't checked it yet myself, but I found this at s.18 of their Combined Financial Services Guide and Product Disclosure Statement:

          Currency conversions

18.10 We process currency conversions using the prevailing wholesale exchange rate plus a percentage currency conversion fee which is retained by us.

18.11 In most instances, the specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction for conversions with PayPal. By proceeding with the transaction, you consent to and authorise PayPal to convert the currency. Where your payment is funded by a Credit Card, you have the right to opt out of PayPal processing your currency conversion before you complete the transaction by selecting “Other Conversion Options” on the “Review Your Information” page during checkout.

18.12 Where the exchange rate is not displayed, or you opt out of PayPal’s currency conversion, the currency conversion will be processed by your Credit Card provider, not by PayPal. You authorise the transaction on the basis of your Credit Card provider’s rates and charges, and we have no liability to you for that currency conversion.

Essentially, I think you have to do it at checkout. I'm going to try it for myself now.

        • +28

You can set the conversation preference on the payment screen when you use PayPal

However if you want to set it permanently:

Login to Paypal > My Account > Profile -> My Money > My Preapproved payments > Update > Set Available Funding Sources > Conversion Options next to your saved credit card(s)> select the 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice.' and done.

Best to set that option for any non currency fee conversion cards you have, 28 degrees etc.

Note if you have an American Express it will automatically bill in $US regardless of what you set, if you are buying something in $US, it won't convert to $AU like Visa/Mastercard.

        • Thanks for this. Have set this now. I'm going to try and call if paypal can honour this despite doing this after the transaction. I didn't see any option when I paid using their mobile site

        • +3

          Champion post!!
Been trying to figure this out to use the Citiplus visa card from within paypal!! Thanks for taking time to post instructions!!

        • No problems, I didn't know about it either until someone pointed it out to me on OzBargain last year, the feature is quite hidden probably on purpose.

        • I'm surprised that isn't more well known by people?

I've always had it set to bill me in the seller's currency ever since I got a 28 degrees card years ago, then the same with my Bankwest card. Doesn't always save a hell of a lot each transaction, but it sure adds up over the years.

        • cheers for this, i went to check and already had it set :D

        • +1

Wow, i've been also wanting to hide direct debit from my bank as an option.. This helped me find out where it is. Awesome. thanks.

    • Checked my PayPal account detail which says

      Total amount:
      -$22.99 USD (equals -$26.30 AUD)

Thanks JV who prompted me to check, as I did not realize the currency issue.

    • $25.52 in total using the Commonwealth Bank MasterCard exchange rate for anyone that wants to save that extra $0.78 than using Paypal's exchange rate!

  • can anyone recommend a portable chargers under $15 delivered worth buying?

  • Good find - also got it for $22.99

    • $22.99 USD

  • +4

I bought this for $35-40 a while back and it's definitely worth the money. I'd highly recommend it to anybody who has a non-replaceable battery in their phone/tablet. Even has a little LED flashlight on the end although it obviously pales in comparison with the 800+ lumen things we've previously seen on here.

    • This has LED flashlight? I bought one a while ago and mine doesn't.

      • +1

Yeah the page says so too "Led flashlight", maybe it's a recent addition? I bought mine about a year ago.

i curently use the Romoss 5200mAh and ive been very happy with it taking it overseas with me and its come in handy during long days out and about sightseeing. Has charged samsungs, iphones, ipods.

Now ive bought this one im hoping it can charge the ipad too.

    Highly recommend these.

  • Bought thanks OP.

  • Good to hear your feedback jzghgkd, starwars. bought one too.

I believe this is a much better option to buy.

      Express Shipping from NSW.

  • Ordered. Don't know why I needed one (have a 5400mAh) but seemed like a good deal. Damn ozbargain…

    • Don't know why I needed one

        "I just did a Pesty".

How is ebay cheapest $34.95 when you can get a solar powered 10000mAh power bank for $22.15 ??

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131110438259?var=430275077575&ssP…

    • +1

It think it's obvious(maybe not) that the referred to price of 34.95 is for the same Romoss power bank on eBay so you can compare apples with apples. The one you linked to is different and I'm sure there are other power banks on eBay rated at 20000mah and more for cheaper. Doesn't mean their actual capacity is 20000mah, in most likelihood, it's not.

I'm also not saying that this Romoss one can definitely deliver what's rated nor am I saying the one you linked to can or can't, just that they posted it there for a comparison of like for like.

    • Do you realise how long it would take to charge a 10000mAh battery with that solar panel? A very very very long time… like days.

      • Solar charging is a BONUS, it charges normally via usb.

  • Not sure what I need this for. I have two batteries for my phone and it'll last for days on just one.

But! I do know that I need one.

    • One reason these are nicer for some people is not turning your phone off and replacing the battery.

  • have been meaning to get a new one..thanks OP!

  • +1

Just bought one don't know why i think i have a problem.. Already have a 15000 powerbank i got from msy a year ago and a 7000 sony from the pricing error end of last year. I guess it will be a good gift.

  • +3

Definitely a good unit. I used it to charge my camera and phone at night whilst trekking on the Kokoda track.

    • +1

This may be the reason why we need more than 1 portable battery now. So many things to charge everyday. I got a phone, a tablet and a camera to charge on the go. Maybe it's time for a 3-port chargers

  • Oh yes - I really like this one! Reviews have said you can charge 2x devices at the same time!

    That's crazy good :)

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131110438259?var=430275077575&ssP…

  • -1

Thanks! Ordered one, set PayPal to charge directly to my CC (ie. not use PayPal conversion rates) and the total came to $33.28.

    • +5

Why didn't you enter the code MLCS10EN it then costs $26.40 AUS delivered.

      • Funnily enough I realized that shortly after posting the original message (dumb moment) and sent them a message through their "Contact Us" page. They were very quick in responding and refunding the coupon value of $7 :)

  • this is romoss sense 4. i have a sense 5. very good built quality. looks very nice. very handy (a little heavy though)

  • Do I need to purchase an Aust plug with USB port? It says it only comes with micro USB cable.

    • Just charge it off your laptop or pc or use your android phone charger.

$35.90 with Express Post Overnight from Sydney on eBay…

  • +1

bought! never heard of the brand but i trust you guys :)

  • Bought one. Thanks, OP. Now I have 4 portable batteries with 4 different capacities. Maybe it's time I give one to my brother

    • +4

      Or electrocute him with them.

  • +3

Although this is a great price for this capacity, you can never be sure if it's true capacity unless you run it through a test.

If you want more control over what you buy and include as a part of your portable battery then I suggest you head over to www.fasttech.com and pick out:

It should be approximately same price as this one, and you can be more certain of the capacity and unit you get etc.

Also Fasttech has 5% off with coupon code "BLF".

    • +1

It would be better if the cells were soldered together, a lot less resistance and more efficient

    • Not really sure why you can be certain of your alternative solution capacity - am I missing something?

Speaking for myself for the same price (actually for $24 it wouldn't matter what the alternative price was really) I'd rather get the premade solution assuming it's mAh rating is in the ballpark of what it claims. I'd rather have a product I can use without assembly and have it look better.

  • Just ordered one :D

  • Paid the extra for one from eBay to get it quicker. Great price though for anyone not in a hurry.

  • Can u charge the backup battery and charge a phone connected to it at the same time,?

  • This seems to be lithium ion vs the banggood lithium poly one. Is one better than the other technology wise?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/136176

  • Just did a quick staticice search, $32.95 at technoni. Pickup in sydney. Shipping is expensive though.
    http://www.techoni.com.au/romoss-sense-4-10400mah-external-b…

  • At this price this is an easy buy :)

  • My PayPal account has my home as primary address and also have my work address (i've been using work address for delivery stuff paid by PayPal).

    Meritline states:
"Please note that we will only ship the package to the confirmed address in your paypal account."

Does it mean I can only use my home address for delivery?

    • you can add mutiple addresses with paypal. select the address when you go to pay

  • Probally a bit off topic but I used paypal and selected my banks conversion fee (cos i've been told its cheaper). But I don't know what the final amount is usually. I'm using a commbank debit card.

How can I do the conversion myself? Is there a website???

    noob here .___.

    • I've never used CBA debit card but in my experience in using CBA Credit card, a good rule of thumb is that to deduct 0.03 from the current exchange rate. Eg. current AUD/USD = 0.9, so it's safe to say that they will be charging you at a rate of 0.87. You could pay more or less but its a good buffer. Also, they will charge you an international trasaction fee too which is about 2.5%-3% of the total amount.

      • I don't see how they wouldn't use the standard MasterCard/Visa rates that are published on their respective websites, then add on their own currency conversion fee (most seem to be 2.95%).

  • Bought 4. $91.96
Good for gifts for a few birthdays coming up and one for myself.
    Thanks OP.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
Should the price in the title be changed to ~$26 AUD?

  • The few items that I have bought from meritline have been absolute rubbish (ie did not work reliably) so I wouldn't mind betting that capacity is significantly less than advertised. Happy if I'm wrong though.

  • Thanks Op!…ordered one…

For anyone who tries to order via their phones, switch to their full site first as the mobile site only allows US shipping address

  • thats a pretty awesome price…
