$250 Welcome Credit for Switching from Telstra Pre-Paid to a post-pay Mobile Accelerate Plan

170

ENDS 30/6/2014. Does not list any t&c's so i assume for any plan. Doesn't say you need to have had pre-paid for any length of time.

Seems like a good deal seeing as Telstra aren't the best at discounts etc. Great for those already on pre-paid. Also if you are wanting to switch from another carrier, perhaps porting to telstra pre-paid and then switching gives you the $250?

Available when you move your pre-paid service to an eligible 12 or 24 month Mobile Accelerate Plan.

The usual arguments exist on whether Telstra is a rip-off / worth the extra for the network. Essentially this is $10 off per month over a 24 month plan.

Things you need to know
If you cancel early the remaining handset payments will be higher as you’ll no longer receive a discount to offset your handset cost.

Mobile Accelerate Plan (including BYO): Some usage is excluded, such as calls/text/MMS to premium numbers (e.g. 19xx numbers), 1234, 12455, 12456 and satellite numbers, content charges and use overseas. Unused allowances expire monthly.

Welcome credit: The $250 welcome credit will be applied by your second bill. You must transfer your existing Pre-Paid number to a 12 or 24 month $45 or above Mobile Accelerate BYO Plan, or, 24 month $55 and above Mobile Accelerate Plan to be eligible for the $250 Welcome Credit. Any remaining Pre-Paid credit will be forfeited when you transfer your service. BYO Handset: If you take up a BYO Plan, you will need to BYO a Telstra Mobile Network compatible handset. Check that your handset supports 3G-850MHz to ensure you get the best possible experience on the Telstra Mobile Network. See telstra.com/device for more information.

This is a good deal if you were going to sign up for a Telstra contract anyway. But for those on Prepaid who know how to work the system, it's not going to appeal much.

    Nice post though.

Agreed. For this is for those that are looking for a plan / also a good way of porting from another provider and getting a bonus that isn't normally there.

  • Maybe they want to reduce the number of Encore prepaid customers.

They're going to have to give a discount larger than $250, if that's what they're aiming to do. I quickly did some sums to figure out if this was a good deal for me, but it works out at ~$5/month more expensive than a $40 Encore recharge….with 100MB less data, and without the freedom to switch plans or reduce usage from month to month.

Even if you were to get a new handset and immediately sell it outright, it still works out more expensive.

<EDIT: as pointed out below, it actually works out better value than Encore Prepaid for the BYO 12 month plans. You can get their "S" plan ($550 talk, unlimited text, 500MB data) for effectively $24/month, or "M" plan ($700 talk, unlimited text, 1.5GB data) for $34/month. Might be worth looking at more carefully>

  • No i think Vodafone and Optus are going to start to do sweeteners again (this is Telstras way to keep you there )

both Optus and Voda still bleeding customers)

    • yea optus has just gone nuts, what i pay now $65/month if i want to re contract has gone upto $110. so in 2 years instead of prices going down overall, its gone up much much higher

Seems to be a reasonable deal on the 12 month BYO plans - effectively $21 off per month for each plan.'

eg BYO medium - $34 per month after credit is applied for 1.5GB, $700 talk and unlimited SMS.

Might be worthwhile for those who don't want the hassle of prepaid.

    • Was about to post this, certainly good value.

Can't bring myself to do it though - AFL Live + Google Play credit with that leftover $30 is just too good!

    • Agree - mentioned it on Whirlpool.

      • hrmm im thinking of changing to this as i dont use any of the google play credit or AFL live, i usually just use the leftover money for extra data!

I can't see any T&C's that state you have to be an EXISTING Pre-Paid customer… It only mentions that you have to be a "pre-paid customer". So hypothetically you could port your number to Telstra Pre-Paid, wait a day, then switch it to a post-paid plan and still get the $250 credit.

    • Yep i think this is the go if you are looking to port to telstra.

Why would anyone sign up to a contract these days is beyond me!

You will NEVER get the ABSOLUTE BEST prices if you commit to a contract! Best deals are only on prepaid or alternatively postpaid plans with no contract.

I can understand, to an extent, someone who signs up to a contract in order to get the latest and greatest smartphone, especially if they can't afford to buy it outright (I personally would never do it but that's just me).

But with regards to BYO plans, it makes no sense and just baffles me!

Can anyone please provide reasoning for doing such a thing? Maybe I am missing something :)

    • I was having same thought as urs and will be same except this deal.. $45 plan will come down to around $23 after applying this deal. It'll include 500mb data + $500 worth call. It'll be also on telstra network.. I tried optus n Vodafone mvnp amaysim, hello, yatango n telstra mvnp Aldi… I found telstra network good for me… So for $23 per month with discount… this is good deal but not for $45.

      • Agreed. If you insist on having the Telstra network then it might make sense for you.

However, keep in mind that once you are on the plan, you are locked in so there is an 'opportunity cost' in case a better deal comes along or a new MVNO running on the Telstra network emerges.

Also, I personally don't like 'cap plans' as the operators usually artificially inflate the call rates which means that effectively, that big number of 'value' included in your cap is not much at all and if your use is anything above average, you will definitely be exceeding it.

With regards to the 500MB data allowance, it is definitely on the low end which could be totally ok if you have decent broadband at home with large data allowance and you switch to the wifi whenever you are home and only use your data for basic stuff like email and social media.

If you want to stream on the go (if you go for a run for example and wanna listen to Pandora or Spotify) or watch Youtube clips, you will go through your 500MB allowance very quickly indeed.

        Two final points to consider:

        1. How long does the 'welcome credit' last for after it has been applied? Does it expire at some point? If so, you might lose it before you get a chance to use it and as you yourself pointed out, the deal will not stack up then.

        2. Telstra mentions that you need to have a phone supporting the 850MHz in order to get the best 3G experience. If your BYO phone supports only 2100MHZ or 2100 & 900 MHZ then again, the deal does not stack up.

  • Can I port my non-Telstra number to Telstra pre-paid, then take advantage of this offer?

    • +1

      Yes absolutely….

    • yep, confirmed with Telstra today via 24*7 online chat. I will do this same several days later after my vodafone credit all used up :-)

  • I'm a Telstra post paid customer. I am just recently out of contract.

Can I switch to Telstra prepaid, then sign up a new contract again on post paid and take advantage of this $250 offer?

    • Yes I guess so…

  • How to take advantage of this deal? Can you just place an order online? Or do you have to go thru 24x7 or is there some special code to use?

  • Also if you get a Sony Xperia Z2 on a plan, perhaps you can take advantage of the $250 welcome credit plus the noise cancelling headphones plus the $40 Iconic gift voucher!

  • Woohooo! Thanks OP. I signed up with a new contract today and didn't even know about this. Hoping they still apply it… :)
