  • Worth noting that this is the South Pacific edition - not sure if this is self explanatory or not.

    • +11

As someone with very little knowledge of TIME or magazines in general, how significantly does the SP edition differ from the "mainstream" one?

      • +7

The European/Asia/Pacific editions tend to have different stories and covers to the US edition.

They are often harsher, sadder stories, which TIME USA thinks will lower sales.

While I dislike Buzzfeed in general, this article highlights the differences very nicely.

        http://www.buzzfeed.com/ellievhall/19insert-word-here-differ…

        • the article is misleading. they do have the same stories BUT in the features section.

    • HOLD OFF PEOPLE… UNTIL THERE IS FURTHER VERIFICATION OF THIS DEAL.

      • OK… so looking at the domain details, it's been up and around for a couple of years and plenty of hits, so not entirely looking grim at this stage: http://who.is/whois/timeasiasubs.com.
Any net geniuses that can decipher this?

        • +1

          This is legit.

        • I'm member of StudentVIP and received this offer. It is legit. But you have to be a student to subscribe. SO CHEAP! Great deal!

        • What other StudentVIP discount have you actually seen though? Only reason i joined was to resell Uni Textbooks on Textbookexchange - Ahh they have changed their name.

      • -1

rather.. HOLD OFF PEOPLE IT'S TIME MAGAZINE

        • +1

rather… HOLD OFF PEOPLE IT'S 2014 AND TIME MAGAZINE ISN'T VERY GOOD ANYMORE

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_(magazine)

The South Pacific edition, which covers Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, is based in Sydney, Australia

  • +2

I just subscribed. Great price considering they're about $6.50 each I think so 27 issues = $175.50 (but of course there is a regular cheaper subscription price)

    • +1

Essentially three subscriptions " 27 issues All Access
      (Print + iPad + Online) ".

  • +1

    Thank you! Just ordered!

  • +1

This and the natty geo are some of few magazines worth subbing for these days

    • +13

You forgot to sub magazines with mags.

      • +3

        fixt.

or not. Apparently I cant edit after someones commented. Nooooooooooooooooo

        • +1

          Sorry

  • +2

nice, been missing my national geo subscription which I got on here cheap. this will be a good replacement.

  • just subscribed, good deal

  • +4

anyone get a confirmation email?? nothing received here

    • They probably just need to manually process something.

    • Haven't got one. Yet?

    • Not got mine either

    • Not yet… seems suss huh?

    • no confirmation for my side too.

  • +1

    just subscribed, good deal

  • Thanks for this - just ordered. I especially like the access via the iPad - will keep my wife very happy!

  • subscribed, thanks OP, but gotta wait until they proceed my order coz waiting for them to deduct my credit card ~_~

  • +1

Buzzfeed article just sold me. I always thought TIME was a bit of a hack job, but it seems it is just the American edition that sucks.

Good for the bathroom and the backpack will be a little nicer than the gym freebie I've been using for a while.

  • +4

the backpack does look pretty decent

  • thanks OP. got 1.

    • Got another. Thanks OP & erd

  • +3

I'm a bit worried about the URL timeasiasubs.com … is it definitely legit?
Going to the official Time website, selecting South Pacific, Australia etc for subscription goes to a very different site.

Also once putting my details into the timeasiasubs.com page, it goes to another site to enter your Credit Card details : secure.customersvc.com …

Can anyone provide a reference that this is a legit site?

Considering you can get all 56 issues + ipad etc etc in the US for $30 a year, this seems legit, fingers crossed.

      • Most magazine subscriptions in America are under $30 per year. In Australia they're usually > $60, and Time is rarely this cheap.
15 years ago I paid a bargain price of about $100 for the year as a student.

    • Hi Freo, it is legit. I'm a member of StudentVIP and received this offer by email today. They always send good student related promotions/offers.

  • Thanks OP purchased one, just a quick question, says the original price is ~$150, so when the subscription ends, they can't debit my cc for the full amount can they?

    • It does say 'automatic payment'. So I suggest you cancel it before it debit again.

      • I can't find where to cancel the damn thing

        • You have to wait until they have confirmed your CC details I think. Then they must send an email with login details, and you should be able to cancel in there.

        • Plus if you pay with Amex I think they can't do automatic DD, so pay with that if you can!

  • Nicely find OP. Just subscribed

  • For anyone worried about how to cancel, HERE: https://secure.customersvc.com/wes/servlet/Show?WESPAGE=iam/…
looks to be like the place you need to go to for cancellation.

OP, maybe add that to the description

  • Just subscribed. Thanks OP.

  • great deal - thanks OP.

  • +2

HOLD OFF PEOPLE… UNTIL THERE IS FURTHER VERIFICATION OF THIS DEAL.

  • just a bit suss not receiving any confirmation email. normally aren't CC payments instant?

  • +7

Chiming in to say the following:

    • After purchasing the deal, there has been no confirmation e-mail or hold on my account (30 minutes and counting)
    • This section which enables you to select the country (Australia) and the promotion code TSA7ND4 for review comes up with an invalid/inapplicable error
    • This one is purely subjective, but the website design in itself, even the customer service landing page, which you must access to cancel your direct debit is looks dodgy.

For those on the fence, observe what happens to the chumps (like me) who paid first and asked questions later.

    • +6

      Chump #5 observing chump #1…

      Come in chump #1.

    • Sitting on one's fence #1, observing Chump #1, noting Chump #5 comments.

      Thank you.

I don't even know if I need a new backpack (even if toilet rolls are not supplied), but the price per issue is really tempting I must say.

  • +1

After a slight panic, I am settling down again… this link shows that it's not a new URL, has plenty of hits and is somehow affiliated with TIME INC in New York. Fingers crossed we didnt just give away our bank details LOL
    http://who.is/whois/timeasiasubs.com

    • yeah I did a bit of searching and found the same, fingers crossed, wont be happy if my CC details are compromised.

  • +1

Already purchased though I am a bit concerned given the other comments, plus this statement, "You are chosen to receive this special introductory offer for students only. Subscribe to TIME with as little as $1 per issue now." You are chosen is very poor grammar from a reputable publication.

    • +2

The original email was received from StudentVIP (studentservices.com.au)

  • This would make a great gift for my father.

He needs a new backpack too.

  • -2

So we still pay corporations for their proganda? Actually if we pay a token amount they may be happy to take a loss, hoping that we are committed to read. Paying money to be lied to, so 1980's, the old hags hanging on today same old presstitutes.
Summary: those that hurt environment baaad; get on the property ladder gooood; maybe we need a new flag; everyone say baaaa baaaa, look over there good sheep while I fleece you, banks are your friends, wages too high but exchange rate can't come down for international competitiveness because banks are hurt paying interest and derivative speculations, young people just work harrrder, and we'll increase immigration to ensure you do, for less. What's good for banks is good for the economy, your age of entitlement belongs to us now, even though we have outsourced all your jobs mwahahaha. Cute puppies, save the poor abused puppies, awwww.

    • +5

lol, wtf. A plus to you sir for the entertainment.

In defence of TIME, people pay a lot more for less in magazines. Daily Telegraph for example, they still charge for that.

    • +11

I paid $27 for an executive bag that comes with free toilet paper - What are you talking about?

  • +4

Could this be a Phishing scam? Why a dedicated domain for subscriptions only? Seems a bit strange.

  • +1

It's about time we had a deal this good ;)

  • +1

It looks too good to be true, quite honestly. Can anyone confirm its legitimacy?

  • +1

Do they have a phone number?? can someone contact them and ask them to confirm legitimacy?

    • +2

cynicism is not tolerated in the Ozbargain community. ;-)

      • +2

can someone contact them and ask them to confirm legitimacy?

        Laziness however, highly encouraged!

  • WHOIS time.com and WHOIS timeasiasubs.com return same details.

    http://www.whoismydomain.com.au/whois/time.com
    http://www.whoismydomain.com.au/whois/timeasiasubs.com

    Looks legit to me.

    • I looked at that too, but can't anyone just register a domain with fake details?

      • +1

        Creation Date: 04-sep-2012

Very long time brewing on that scam

and wtf is up with that whoismydomain.com.au site. much better through Hexillion.org or here: http://centralops.net/co/

  • +1

can this be paid via Paypal? don't feel comfortable atm giving out my cc

  • +3

Maybe someone who got the original email can phone Student VIP to confirm: http://studentservices.com.au/contactus.php

    • +3

Yes, good idea. I am subscribed to StudentVIP but did not receive this email.

    • +4

      "Thanks for your email.

Yes, this is a legitimate offer for students. If you have any concerns, please call the TIME phone number that has been quoted on the email – 1800 427 382 (Mon-Fri 10am-8pm EST)

      Cheers,
      Helen

      StudentVIP"

  • So once the 27 weeks is up they auto renew your subscription at the normal rate? $75 i believe.
It also doesn't seem to say from the front page how early they will automatically deduct from your card. "Before each new subscription term, we’ll simply bill you in time for you to lock in your savings then in effect. "

    Good deal if legit

  • +6

Being a member of StudentVIP and reading all the concerns, I have contacted StudentVIP Head Office, they've confirmed that this deal is legit and it is a current offer running for students.
Such a great price! and love their backpack!

    • +13

Yes, but how do we know you're legit? You've basically signed to OzBargain half an hour ago!

      • +4

Like this deal wasn't suss enough already, now this guy signing up today lol

        • +1

On the actual email, there was a contact number for TIME's customer service - 1800 427 382
You can also contact StudentVIP directly by emailing svip @ studentservices.com.au

  • +3

Thanks anonymous internet user who may or not be a Nigerian scammer associated with this deal which may or may not be a phishing scam!

  • Why is "End User Agreement" going "Access License" going to a very "shady looking page" with contact person as [email protected]

Don't know if this is legit

  • +4

    "Thanks for your email.

On the actual email, there was a contact number for TIME's customer service - 1800 427 382
You can also contact StudentVIP directly by emailing svip @ studentservices.com.au

  • Ordered one, see how it goes…before I vote..

  • +3

If you check the actual TIME website the customer service number is 1-800-843-8463 (international number)

I'm not inclined to dis-believe thydzik and sweet131313 who seem to be working together.

    South-Pacific Subscription page.
    https://subscription.time.com/storefront/subscribe-to-time/s…

    TIME customer service page
    https://secure.customersvc.com/wes/servlet/Show?WESPAGE=iam/…

EDIT: and a quick Google of the number they both provided doesn't reveal anything, if it was associated with TIME you would expect it to show up somewhere on Google

    • +3

its all very strange. I did not receive this email at all from StudenVIP despite being a member. hope it all works out though.

      • the email was actually subjected "Exclusive TIME offer for UWA students, save 85% plus gift!"

so probably only UWA students received it.

    • +3

I suggest those that have signed up to this deal should change their card details or freeze their account for a bit, just until it gets verified.

    • Another student deal?

      https://subscription.time.com/storefront/subscribe-to-time/s…

This one is only for online access.

    • +5

Also, in the "official" website (time.com) you have the option of paying with PayPal, whereas in the bargain one (timeasiasubs.com), it must be with CC. You would think Time magazine would be consistent regarding this matter.

      • +3

yeah I would have paid with paypal given the option. the confirmation page looks very amateur. its not really adding up, hope we see an email or something soon to confirm it all.

    • +10

I called up the number provided by thydzik and sweet131313 and went to a very badly made voice machine service. When I got to a person she sounded exactly like the lady doing the voice machine.

She said the call centre was in Hong Kong, but she couldn't put me through to any other call representatives as the whole office was apparently in a meeting.

DO NOT SIGN UP TO THIS DEAL

      • +1

This is indeed very concerning. Kudos for making the call though.
