The Story (speculation on my behalf)

One could assume that there is a story behind this as I have seen this on eBay in other countries recently and my assumption is that it’s an effort to drive top line sales and bring the stock price back up due to eBay's challenges in 2014:

Ebay’s stock price was recently at a 52 week low at US$48.06 and has been on a consistent decline since 2014. There are several factors that have influenced this (not in order of impact):

  1. The recent security issue/alerts;
  2. Departure of some key executives;
  3. The infighting with investor Carl Icahn;
  4. Alibaba IPO around the corner with Alibaba posing a real threat to Ebay;
  5. Amazon consistent strength and expansion (they’ll be here next year!);
(perhaps 4&5 should have Australian retail worried too!)
  6. Google Search algorithm changes resulting in lower rankings for ebay listings;
  7. Shut down of eBay Now - same day service;
  8. Some other undisclosed events (speculation).

Either way, I’m happy to support them this weekend and I’ll be buying up on Sunday !!!

The Instructions

  1. Proceed to Ebay Checkout Page: Checkout: Review order
  2. Enter coupon code in redemption code box (bottom right) and press apply
  3. Press Continue and pay with paypal
  4. Verify in the paypal screen/system that the discount was applied before you complete your order.

Hint: If you are buying multiple items then make sure the currencies of the items are the same because you will only get one shot at this coupon.

Please let us know what you are going to buy and share your bargains below please.

Start adding product(s) to your watchlists today and enjoy!

Will the professionals crash the site?

If you do the math then this is a potential $6 000 000 spend from eBay!

        • Won't work. Ebay only allows trusted sellers to sell giftcards.

Would have been nice to sell off some of the WISH giftcards from the entertainment book for a 10% profit.

Saw this Coles Myer card up for sale $500, buyer said he'd sell it, make a good offer well over $500.
Another seller was selling his $500 Good Guys card for around $560 and advertising the 15% discount. Lucky people cashing in on the fact that they are trusted sellers as they'd normally sell for 15% less.

    • +5

      It's one transaction.. not item.
      Buy 3! (or 4! :D)

      • That correct. is one transaction and per customer

Anyone know how to buy from more than one shop and add to one transaction?

    • How $30.75 Profit. Basic Maths paying $174.20 to get $200 in EFTPOS money. So $25.80 profit for every $200.
Buy 3 cards, so around $77.40 in profit. Probably we get 5% everyday with ING, so more like $47.40 profit for my $600 :P, not too bad !

      • +1

How $30.75 Profit. Probably we get 5% everyday with ING, so more like $47.40 profit for my $600 :P, not too bad !

Yeah, jomari's math is a bit off. Still, profit is to be made my fellow arbitrageurs!
Not sure how you'll use ING 5% in paypal though :|

    • Sounds ideal but do people normally secure them off ebay ?? Slippery envelope and no compensation in the unenviable event they fall in to the hands of a third party. While we are reminded to treat Gift cards "like cash".

How thorough is tracking in employing EMS for $700.

    • +3

Why would people normally pay more than the value of the gift card?

      • Either gifts from remote or overseas relatives, or more likely, money laundering, though latter is decreasing with crypto currencies.

      • Sorry wrong post.

    • +9

Hate to be a party pooper but I am not going to partake in buying hundreds of dollars worth of Gift Cards from eBay to take advantage of the offer.

Yes, of course i want to but for me it's not worth the risk. I will instead buy something physical.

Here are some warnings for you taking advantage.

-Paypal buyer protection does not apply for gift cards. The listings do not specify buyer protection exists and this is confirmed here. This is also confirmed by an ozBargain member

-If the transaction goes south you risk a bag of hurt trying to claim your money back. At least use a credit card via Paypal so you can claim a chargeback if things sour. Given that the seller is presumably a small volume seller (going by his feedback history) and he will be Ozbargained for sure, the chances of things screwing up will increase.

-I would expect no less than 100% positive feedback for the seller of giftcards on ebay given the previous scam artists which have operated in the past in selling gift cards on ebay. Yes ebay has cracked down on it however buyers are no longer offered protection as mentioned above.

Just some things to think about if you are intending of spending up big on gift cards.

      • At least use a credit card via Paypal so you can claim a chargeback if things sour

Agree. This is how it must be done, and how I will be purchasing them.

      • +1

I've had to make a few paypal claims for undelivered gift cards in the past and never had a problem.

That said I've always used credit card via paypal as you suggest for backup just in case.

      • Someone bought 93 today! He might be a little annoyed when he/she finds out the discount is $100 maximum.

        • +3

He might be a little annoyed when he/she finds out the discount is $100 maximum

More annoyed to find out the discount hasn't started :)

        • They buy but don't pay till Sunday perhaps?

        • It must be the seller himself/herself bought this using other account to fork out $3000++ profit from ebay

  • I'm a bit confused.. how do you get a code?

  • +57

1 hour ago i was sure i was quite content with my life and didn't need to buy anything. now i'm not so sure.

    • +6

You go through the same ordeal every single day.

  • +7

    This would be great http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/500-worth-of-JB-HI-FI-Gift-Card-V…
    $470 with 15% off would be 399.5
    Save $100.5

    • +1

ebay gave me a 25% off code making it $370.

    • aldo, do you mean 'save $70.50'?

  • +3

    max discount $100

    If 15% off = Total $100 Discount
Then to take the FULL advantage of this once-off transaction of 15% off (saving $100)
    $100/0.15 = $666.67 [scaling back to 100%]

At that price, I think people buying current flagship smartphones (assuming the prices don't suddenly increase.. by $100) will benefit the most.

EDIT: Or you know, buying eftpos cards work as well :P

    • +1

      i just checked the prices
kogan seems to be cheaper still

    • Yap it's good time to buy them

    • sony xperia z2 660->560ish

  • Note this info':

'It is estimated that there are about 60,000 coupons available for redemption based on average item spend per customer. We will indicate on the website when coupons are running down in number.'

  • -3

If only there was no limit (max savings $100) imagine the possibilities! Buy a car or a home!

    • +16

If there was no limit, I would sell my rich mate a single tic-tac on that day, over ebay, via paypal, for a million dollars. He would then claim his $150K from ebay. Then we'd go to the pub together. And whatever happened after that, would be between him and I. I assume this is why they've capped it at 100 clams.

      • +4

except youre hit with 10% ebay and paypal fees so you only reap $50k

        • Would be 50k for 5mins work though…

        • +4

          only $50k

        • -1

You'll be loosing money after taking out GST.

        • with paypal fee, it is actually close to 11%~ so, 40K

        • +1

          only $50k

You have to have a million dollars in your bank account to get this $50k though.

Would work better if Bill Gates was your friend.

      • Don't forget your $100k ebay fee, and paypal fees. There will not be much left.

        • Paypal can be avoided by COD, but it might had to pay tax for capital gains.

        • +1

You need to pay via paypal

      • Assuming your mate has one million dollars.

        • sell the wife and kids

        • +1

There is no such market where a wife and kids are worth one million dollars. In most cases, Many men are willing to pay someone to take their wife and kids.

  • +5

To make the most of it buy something for $666.66 so 15% disc is $100

    • +11

just create a listing yourself for $666.66
      buy it yourself
      minus 10% paypal fees

      free 5% cash

      • +1

Did they remove final value fee?

      • Buying gift cards would still be the better option.

      • You can't buy your own items (although I heard when eBay first started in 1995 (?) it was possible, until it was quickly exploited).

        • +3

really? they know what my cousin's ebay account is?

      • 10% eBay fee plus 3% PayPal fee, you would only get 2% back. Hardly worth it compared to prepaid eftpos and debit cards.

        • that's $13. :(

      • minus 10% paypal fees
        free 5% cash

Better to let the seller pay the 10% fee than paying it yourself. Buy the gift cards.

    • +8

666 - Funny how it also happens to be the devil's number. Coincidence? I think not. I had my suspicions, but now I'm definitely convinced ebay and pp are the devil.

      • Noticed this too.
        Satan definitely involved.

      • +8

        666 / 2 = 333

        HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED

      • +1

Illuminati..new world order is closer than I think.

      • what to buy for 666?

  • Good time to buy a smart phone I guess..

    • ~$560 for a phone is still more than I would like to pay. Would rather wait for the price to drop below that naturally.

  • Are we able to win the auction today and pay them on Sunday to get 15% off ?

    • +1

      Nope. T&Cs

You must purchase and make payment during the Offer Period.

Offer period is Sunday from 10am-Midnight

      • Thanks
But it's working with auction right?

  • +1 gift card spam! GOGOGO

  • +4

Given this bit of the T&Cs:

'…based on average item spend per customer… ',

Methinks they probably only have a fairly tiny 'kitty' of dough for this stunt, and that it will all be over before it begins.
My prediction is that they end up issuing way less coupons than they are pretending that they are 'predicting based on past sales', for the obvious reason that during the very brief period that the coupons are available, a huge number of informed peeps will be buying stuff that is way more expensive than the '…average item spend per customer' they euphemistically allude to in their T&Cs, if they get a coupon…

I can't wait to see how it plays out though, and I hope at least some OBs get some joy from it!

    • I think you might be right. Avg spend would not be $666 which triggers the max discount that havok44 worked out, avg spend would be more like 30-50 bucks is my guess! Either way, i'm sure it will make the news.

      • I'm guessing the 'average spend' is probably actually way under ten bucks; probably even under five. I buy heaps of that 'almost free' stuff from Hong Kong via ebay these days, that doesn't even incur a postage charge ('micro HDMI adapters' for $1 for example… similar to the ones sold in shops here for ~$20)…
So yeah, who knows how they determined what the 'average spend' is… is it 'average spend per item'? I'm guessing so…
But I really hope I'm being too pessimistic about this, and that much joy comes of it, for as many as possible :)

        • +5

This is why Gerry Harvey and Bernie Brooks are pissed. People are no longer buying their $100 cables and other expensive accessories but instead getting them for a few bucks off eBay.

        • +9

Good, they had it coming for ripping off people like the elderly who wouldn't know better.

    • +2

      Ebay calculation methods:

      60,000 screen protectors from China $0 + $1 postage :)

  • will it work if say you buy 2x the same item?

    • +1

It says One Transaction, not One Item, so it should.

  • Thanks!

  • +1

    I gotta start listing stuff!!

    • +1

thi6, have you considered that perhaps this may be their cunning ruse after all? Lull in a tidal wave of sellers bound to sell once the item is listed, on a somewhat dubiously explained potential 15% off for an unknown number of buyers for an unknown period of time (capped at 100 clams per buyer)…

I would not rush to list based on a predicted increase in sales, particularly if it involves you paying or committing to any fees at all.

  • I have a coupon for 25% off as well, hmmm I wonder if they will stack :)

    • +1

How you got 25% off voucher?

    • I have one too

  • +2

would it be possible to refund recent buyers and tell them i will relist the item for them so they are able to get 15% off?

    • not sure on the availability of these though…

  • awesome news at midnight! anybody have some great ideas?
though i dont think vouchers could be available i will still have a try.

  • I have always had trouble doing this, can someone tell me how to buy three different items in 1 transaction?

    • +1

      change quantity to 3?

only works if the seller has listed multiple identical items

    • +2

      you mean from different sellers?

add it to cart if it gives you the option.

add multiple items to cart pay in one checkout for all items.. should be bale to add a coupon ?

ok back to 2nd half of AUS vs NED :D

      • +3

        GOAL!!!!

        • +1

          And another :(!

        • +1

          ffs!

        • +1

          :-(

  • Correct me if I'm wrong
The sellers could be from anywhere right?

  • +5

10% ebay fees, 5% paypal, ebay is not loosing any $$

    • well they're not earning any either?

      • +2

So, revenue neutral for them. But increased sales so that it looks good for them. Also creates good vibes for sellers due to a possible slight increase in sales . also buyers are happy and this promo may lure some old sellers back and encouraging new ones.

      • +4

they still have partner ads on their website..

affiliates and pay per view etc

    • Perish the thought that they actually cry poor after this sale.

    • +1

5% PayPal fee? Try halving that, though you do pay fees even on your postage now.

  • Any good finds?

  • =( dammit just bought something yesterday

  • wtf i dont get this~~~ http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Coles-Myer-Gift-Card-100-/2615043…

this isnt the only gift card one either~ coles gift card worth $100 has a current wining bid of $106, why?

    • Probably another scam. I'm going to pick up a free $25, why not? Money for jam.

    • thinking the same.. wouldnt you just go to coles and spend $100 for $100?

      • not if you've got a 25% off ebay voucher as some people in this thread have.
