And Amex holders can get $20 credit with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156543. Very tempting

  • It is wanting to charge me for delivery

    • +2

      Me too

Edit: The discount gets applied at the final steps. All good.

This is an excellent price for a quality 16 year old.

  • Is it the same price in store?

  • I've had this so many time now since seeing it on OzBargain.
    Good stuff

I'd like to try something different, has anyone got other recommendations in the same price range?

    • +8

      Laphroaig is my personal favourite.

    • +3

In that price range? Talisker. Everyone should drink Talisker.

Or one of the punchier Ardbegs, like the Ardbog or Uigeadail.

Or for something that will knock your socks clean off, Aberlour A'bunadh.

      • +2

Drink Octomore and feel your face go numb

        • Just tried the 6.1 on the weekend. Frustrating that it's 57% booze. Makes a night of it real short!

    • +1

As Cluster mentioned, I'd go for the Laphroaig. The 10 year old is good, but if you want something with a little extra, i'd go for the Quarter Cask.

    • Try Caol Isla. A very very nice drop in same price range if you can find it. Peaty but smooth

Are you guys just making up words now?

If you like the Lagavulin you should be able to enjoy anything from Islay (pronounced "eye-lah").. Islay malts all have that smokey/peaty characteristic. In case you'd care to know why - Islay is a small boggy island. Shipping coal to Islay to toast malted barley is expensive,so they used what they had plenty of - peat (anaerobically decaying vegetable matter). Peat burns well, but it burns dirty.. imparting a strong smokey smell to the barley, which is then fermented and distilled.. but the smoke is so strong that it stays in the final spirit. The Islay distilleries are (in no particular order):

      Laphroaig
      Lagavulin
Ardbeg (the 10 year old is possibly my favourite bottom of the line standard bottling)
      Kilchoman (Only opened in 2005)
      Bowmore
      Bunnahabain (underrated in my opinion)
Bruichladdich (a lot of these aren't actually peated, so choose wisely)
Port Charlotte (reopened by Bruichladdich in 2011)

Talisker also produce fairly heavily peated whisky, and are an exception in that they are on the Isle of Skye not Islay.

Big fan of Laphroaig 10yo if you are in to the Islay malts. Dan Murphys still seems to be matching the ALDI deal so you can order for $69.95 (delivery only). Use the free shipping code, knock off $20 using your Amex and you've got the deal of the century at $49.95. It's $90 at Vintage Cellars. Sláinte!

    • Thanks for all the suggestions. I now have a list to work through

    • Talisker 1999 Distiller Edition. If you like this, you will love the Talisker.
I just wish the 1996 Distillers edition was still available. I've still got my empty bottle in the hope that some day God will refill it :(

EDIT: So glad there are some quality whiskey enthusiasts on here!

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old. Can't resist this classic @ $30.99 with your code + $20 Amex cash back. Cheers!

    • Hi Tafe - What code do you mean to get Glenlivet for $30.99 ?

      • The code is in the OP, it's only for free delivery though.. I'm assuming that price is including the $20 AMEX cashback.

        • I suspected that but couldn't get to $30.99 . Price on DM for Glenlivet is $46.95 so if we are talking about the AMEX cash back offer it should be $26.95 ?

        • @twitch1979: Hmm.. It's $50.99 for me. Local price match maybe?

        • @ryang:

Must be . Local store for me Manly Vale NSW and is showing as $46.95.

    • I thought you have to spend $50 to get the $20 Amex cash back

      • Sorry that wasn't clear. The final price for the Glenlivet delivered is $30.99 after the OPs delivery code and the $20 Amex rebate are taken into account

        • Oh! Misread. Yeah that is a good price :D

  • +3

this is like the official whisky of ozbargain

  • As someone who has never tried scotch before but wants to get into it, on average how many servings would 700mL consist of?

    • a shot is 30ml so around 23 drinks. But I doubt you could just have one shot so divide that number by 2 :)

    • +3

Don't start with this, then. You'll be put off. It takes a little time and experience to work your way up to Lagavulin. If you want to get a start on whisky, get some Canadian Club or Johnnie Walker and ease yourself in.

If you want to get cracking on single malts (and I advise that you do!) then start with the Aberlour 10 year. Absolutely great single malt without the balls-deep complexity of the Lagavulin.

    • I concur with cmdwedge.. don't buy this as a first whisky. Don't even buy it as a present unless you know that the recipient likes peaty malts.

As a starting whisky either go for Irish/Canadian, or go for a nice mild single malt like Dalwhinnie, Old Pulteney, Glen Elgin or Glenmorangie.

Qwibble it just a little bit 5% cashback from Dans

    • +1

Fantastic. Nearest DM is at least a 15min drive, nearest First Choice is a 2min stagger.

    • Has anyone received any money back from Qwibble, I've had a very bad experience with them to say the least.

      • Nope. I ordered about $900 of booze for a bucks via qwibble/Dan's and never saw a cent of my cash back. This was in January.

        • +1

Have had terrible experiences with Qwibble. I have gotten cash from Qwibble (about $10) but took something like 6 months, lots of spending, lots of having valid claims rejected and having to submit enquiries which then take another 8 - 12 weeks to resolve, etc.

I basically gave up on them and made one last purchase through Dan Murphy's to try to get the remainder of my cash out (they have a minimum amount you need to hit). Yet another valid claim rejected by Dan Murphy's, Qwibble agreed that it was a valid claim and chased up Dan Murphy's for it, it's now 9 months later and I still haven't seen a cent.

          Not worth the effort.

        • @hayne: I mean, the hints in the name. They will quibble over every claim.

(note: this is just a crappy joke, based on these reports I think Qwibble probably deserved government investigation and related prosecution/penalty)

        • @tantryl:
Ok they clearly seem like a scam I'm owed around $500 for around 9 months.
They were recommended on Ozbargain hence used them, please don't suggest other users their way.

It really sux when the skywizard tells you that awesome things are naughty.

  • Going to grab me one of these - anyone got an Amex that want's the $20 deal? PM me.

  • It has been two hours and so far there has not been a single troll about mixing this with Coke. OzBargain!?!?! What happened to you?

    • +2

      please…cokeheads drink Johnny Blue! ;)

    • Seriously?? Coke?? Ozbargainers are surely far too cultured for that. A nice bit of Kirks Dry Ginger Ale would do just the trick though….

  • I generally grab it when it drops below $90 so this is an outstanding price.

No one likes the Yamazaki 12yo Single Malt?

    • I've never tried a Japanese whiskey. I should.

    • +1

Ooohhh, I love Yamazaki 12yo… I heard the 18 is even more legendary, but is hard to find.

It's so smooth, hint of sweetness, it's incredible.

      But not for smokey/peaty fans.

FYI, they 18yo won award as the best single malt last year, for the whole world.

      • $300 a bottle for Yamazaki 18yo in Australia!

Yamazaki 12 is good enough for me :)

      • Thanks for the info. I shall track the 18 yo down overseas.

    • -1

Yamazaki is nothing special, most japs whisky really. Only Hibiki 21y is better in my opinion.

      • Hibiki is a blended whisky. And yes, 21 yo Hibiki is not bad - Wolverine drank it on the plane to Tokyo and Bill Murray drank it at Hyatt Tokyo..hehehe.
Japanese Whisky is slowly making the inroads into Au….

      • There's a few interesting whiskies coming out of Japan.

Other than the standard Hakushu, Yamazaki, Miyagikyo, Nikka from the barrel and (totally boring IMHO) Hibiki

If you get the chance check out stuff from Ichiro's malt, and Akashi white Oak are atypically complex and intense.

        • Noted. Thanks!

    • I received a bottle of Hibiki 17 year old recently. It's very tasty. Sweet, floral aroma with great flavour. Pity it's so expensive.

    • +2

Stayed at a hostel in Kyoto recently. Asked for a Yamazaki neat because I was keen to try and spirits were only $3. The guy behind the bar filled the glass! Best bargain of the trip. Loved it!

      • FACT. Though I was not served Yamazaki, but it's one of those Suntory whisky range. Was charged $2.50 for a 30ml shot…. compared to $10 to $15 per 15ml shot in Perth. :-(

  • thanks op
dans usually does this price a couple of times per year - one of my favourites!!
plus with the 20 dollar amex deal - WAMO!

  • +1

    thanks op

just bought this in conjunction with the amex deal.

only issue was it didn't want to deliver to my residual address as the field was greyed out (post code 3070) and i had to get it delivered to work address (post code 3000)

  • Thanks bought. Used the $20 amex credit and free delivery code. Been looking at this for a long time. Just need another amex card.

  • Whisky noob: Bought a bottle of Glenlivet 12yo a year ago.. struggling to finish it… tastes really harsh on the back of the tongue even with a touch of water. I really do love the smell though.

Judging by all the rave reviews, should I give this a go? In the past have just been drinking Johnny walkers.

    • +2

This has a much, much stronger flavour than Glenlivet 12. Islay malts are like drinking fire and dirt.

      • So does that mean it's better in my context? Heard the Lagavulin is smooth as well according to reviews.

        • +5

          In your case? Probably not.

It's not what I'd really call 'smooth'. It's really strong in both flavour and alcohol. And fiery. Glenlivet is already one of the easiest drinking malts out there, so if you found that too harsh, this will be like drinking acid. Awesome, smokey acid.

Something like a Scapa, Dalwhinnie or Bruichladdich are going to be a lot easier to drink. Maybe a the Auchentoshan three wood or that Balvenie doublewood.

If you want something truly 'smoother' than a Glenlivet, you probably want a blended whisky like a Chivas. The idea behind blending is to use different whiskies to round out the edges and make the whole thing easier to drink.

        • @jjcf:

Is it something you build up to or.. you have it or you don't kind of thing?

        • @Rtn
          http://www.masterofmalt.com/samples/whisky-samples/scotch/si…

          try these guys
samples aren't cheap if you work out per mL - but it does allow you to try things before you commit to buying a full bottle.

        • @RtN: You can definitely build up to it. Remember how awful your first beer/wine/martini/etc was?

        • @jjcf:

Defintely have, just had some more on Saturday then last night.. definitely like it better now. Taste better when you try to appreciate it hold it over the tongue etc. Will try pick up a Lagavulin next few days.

        • +2

          @RtN:

Some people just never get it. It took me a while.

Best start with mild highlanders like Dalwhinnie or Old Pulteney.. try to smell the whisky every once in a while and notice how its changing as it warms up in the glass. Try exhaling through your nose as you're rolling the whisky around in your mouth.. you'll get different aromas again. Even with the milder whiskies you'll taste that there's a difference between the distilleries.

Then maybe move on to some malts from SPeyside or Campbelltown like Cragganmore, Glenrothes, Mortlach, or Springbank. Maybe some bottlings that have been finished in sherry or wine casks. You'll be able to identify them by the dark colour. Notice how the cask interaction has added complexity to the spirit.

Move on to the Islay malts last. The first time I was able to enjoy a peated malt was when I associated the smell with a campfire.. not a gentle smoke but more like chucking a chunk of redgum on the fire. TBH I think the first few times you try to taste a peated whisky.. make it the third or fourth whisky you have for the night.. when your palate is a bit acclimated to the burn

        • +2

@simulacrum: If you're an absolute rank beginner and find the taste of whisky and spirits in general bad you might want to start even weaker.

The absolute least whisky-like whisky I've encountered, the most inoffensive to the beginners palate, is Canadian Club. Whisky fans will mock you for drinking it, they might even claim it's not really whisky, but if you're struggling even with Dalwhinnie then it might be your starting place.

Next up would probably be Chivas Regal.

          Then start into simulacrum's list.

        • @tantryl:

Very true. To be honest the first spirits that I learned to enjoy sipping slowly were dark rums.. something like a Angostura 1919 or Ron Zacappa. They're so sweet with vanilla and cinnamon notes that most people can learn to like them.

        • @tantryl:

Thanks guys.. as mentioned earlier… somehow I've gotten used to Glenlivet. Have just ordered the Lagavulin.. hopefully arrives before Friday ;)
